City Breaks Ground at Future Community Center Site July 19, 2010, will go down as a significant day in Lawndale’s history. On this special day, the City Council hosted the groundbreaking for the new Community Center on the eventual site located on the southeast corner of Burin Avenue and 147th Street. The Lawndale community has been anxiously awaiting the new Community Center since Measure A passed with 76% voter approval on April 8, 2008. Approximately 90 interested residents, elected officials and City staff, among others, attended the event on the warm summer day. In the coming months, the Lawndale community will be privileged to watch the building develop from what it is now a parking lot, to a beautiful approximately 29,000 square foot (including outside terrace), energy efficient three level community center. The first level will consist of tuck under ground level parking, while the second and third levels will consist of approximately 25,000 square feet of indoor space. The project is expected to be completed in approximately 16 months; the City is anticipating the doors of the community center opening in November of 2011.
