Residents Can Now Save Money by Reducing Their Trash Service! The City of Lawndale is excited to announce that on January 1, 2011, Consolidated Disposal Service (CDS) will be offering new recycling and solid waste programs. The first thing residents will notice is the new pricing system. Instead of a flat rate for trash carts, CDS will offer prices based on the actual size of trash cart you order. For example, if you request a smaller trash cart, such as a 64 or 35 gallon cart, you pay less than the 2010 flat rate. However, if you order a large 96-gallon trash cart, you will pay a little more. You will still be given a complimentary green cart for yard waste and a blue cart for recyclables. (Please refer to the list of acceptable materials listed on the inside of each different cart lid.) Residents living in single-family homes should have received cart selection cards allowing you to select the cart size desired. This way residents can order a trash cart that fits the needs of their household which may even save you some money. If you have not received your cart selection card by the time you are reading this article, contact CDS and request one. Senior residents will still receive a 15% discount on their monthly trash bill. If you would like an additional trash cart, you will be able to order one from CDS for an additional charge. Residents will still be able get one additional blue recycling cart for free. There are a few other additions to Lawndale’s recycling program. If you ever find that you have more trash than can fit in your trash cart (called “overage trash”), you can call CDS for two free pickups per year, of up to 3 large bags of trash per pickup. Also, CDS will pickup any overage trash and Christmas trees for the two weeks following December 26 at no charge. Overage trash pickups during the two weeks after Christmas will not count against the two free overage trash pickups or the four bulky item pickups available to residential customers. Also, please be aware of Lawndale’s used oil recycling program. Residents of Lawndale may set used oil and oil filters next to your trash carts on trash pickup day, and CDS will collect them at no additional charge. For Lawndale’s disabled residents, CDS is offering free “backyard collection service”. There will be no need for disabled residents to place their container by the curb. Just call CDS’ customer service at (800) 299-4898 to schedule a used oil pickup or arrange for backyard collection.

LA County Sheriff’s Department South Los Angeles Station Replaces Lennox Station Since the City’s incorporation December 28, 1959, the City of Lawndale has contracted with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department for professional public safety services. Currently, the City contracts with the County for nine regular patrol deputies, four special assignment deputies, two motor deputies, one gang investigator, one sergeant and one law enforcement technician. In addition, the Sheriff’s Department contract provides the services of a detective bureau, specialized units, task forces, and administrative personnel. These are invaluable public safety assets to the community.
On June 14, 1997, in an effort to keep up with the needs of the community, the City and the Sheriff’s Department dedicated the new Sheriff’s Service Center. Formerly a vacant Senior Center on Prairie Avenue, it was found to be an ideal location to house the new center. After a renovation period of about 6 months the Service Center opened as a fully operational substation, providing service to the City of Lawndale and the communities of El Camino Village, Del Aire and Wiseburn. As the only contract city to be served by the Lennox Station previously, and now the new South Los Angeles Station, the City of Lawndale takes great pride in the ongoing, cooperative relationship we have with the Sheriff’s Department. The support personnel at the South Los Angeles Station, as well as the local services provided out of the Lawndale Service Center, continue to provide high quality service, fast response times, and quality law enforcement to the community. With the new South Los Angeles Sheriff’s Station dedicated in a formal ceremony on November 6, 2010, the City of Lawndale looks forward to many more years of partnership with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
