Updated Recreational Vehicle (RV) Parking Ordinance As of December 6, 2017, the City will have new regulations regarding recreational vehicle parking. According to the new ordinance, recreational vehicles will no longer be allowed to park on City streets unless the vehicle has been issued a temporary permit.

Permits can be obtained twice per calendar year for no more than seven days each.

By definition, trucks with camper shells are considered recreational vehicles.

Community Watch Programs Deter Crime! Start One on Your Block Today!

Community watch programs are one of the best deterrents to crime. They are a grassroots effort to take control of one’s own neighborhood. Developed in the 1960’s, they are a community movement with a mission to mitigate increasing crime.

The following are many of the benefits of a strong and committed Neighborhood Watch program: Crime deterrence; Creates a greater sense of security and reduces the fear of crime; Fortifies and emboldens the neighborhood; Reduces the risk of being victimized and in turn, reduces the physical, financial, and psychological impacts of crime; Instructs residents how to observe and report suspicious activities in your community; Addresses quality of life issues in neighborhoods; Gives your neighborhood a bigger voice; and Can be a catalyst to meeting your neighbors.

Starting a neighborhood watch program is easier than most people think and the rewards can be substantial and long-lasting. The process can be broken down into a few simple steps: 1. Begin with a planning committee. Gather a few neighbors that are willing to assist in starting a neighborhood watch.

2. Select a coordinator and block captain volunteers who are responsible for relaying information to members.

3. Recruit members from your block or neighborhood.

4. Keep up-to-date information on new residents and make an effort to involve the elderly, working parents, and young adults.

The sheriff’s department is always willing to assist in the startup and can provide helpful advice. Contact Lieutenant Burcher at the Lawndale Service Center for questions on beginning a neighborhood watch, or to request participation at an established meeting.

Have You Heard of Lawndale’s Graffiti Hotline?

Communities all over southern California are burdened with the effects of graffiti. Not only are the effects of graffiti costly and burdensome, the existence of graffiti can result in blight in a neighborhood and spread rapidly if not eliminated quickly. Graffiti that is not eliminated quickly can lead to more graffiti as rivals attempt to wipe out the graffiti of others and cover it with their own message.

However, the City of Lawndale has an effective tool for residents and business owners to combat the existence of graffiti – the Graffiti Hotline. The Graffiti Hotline is a public telephone line that records messages pertaining to graffiti in Lawndale. City staff checks the recorded messages left on the hotline several times per day and on weekends as well, and moves quickly to eliminate the graffiti. The hotline accepts messages on a 365/24/7 basis.

If you would like to nominate a beautiful home or business in your neighborhood for consideration, please contact the Municipal Services Department at (310) 973-3220.

When you see an act of graffiti being committed, the best call you can make is to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, Lawndale Service Station. However, if you are not able to see the act being committed while it is happening, the next best call you can make is to the graffiti hotline. When you see it, call it in! The Graffiti Hotline can be reached at (310) 973-3264. Please note that in many cases the City cannot encroach onto private property to eliminate graffiti.

USDA Free Food Program The City of Lawndale Free Food Program is open to all adults who qualify. The food is provided by the Food Bank of Southern California and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). The food bank obtains and distributes donations of nutritious food that the City of Lawndale picks up from the warehouse and packs and distributes weekly.

The food received each week varies and oftentimes consists of canned goods and some type of fresh produce.

Food Distribution Information: Food distribution takes place at the Harold E. Hofmann Community Center located at 14700 Burin Avenue at the third floor Main Event Room. Food is distributed every Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. on a first come, first served basis to those who qualify until all food is gone. Lines to obtain food form early. Those obtaining food must provide signature confirming that Emergency Food Assistance Program (EFAP) guidelines are met. The Lawndale Beat Fixed-Route Transit offers effective transportation solutions within the City of Lawndale at a reasonable cost, and in many cases free of charge.

The Lawndale Beat is a seven day per week service consisting of two routes, the Residential and the Express. The Beat will get you nearly anywhere you want to go in Lawndale and links to neighboring transportation systems such as: Metro, Torrance Transit and Beach Cities (Redondo) Transit at the Metro Green Line Station and the South Bay Galleria. The Lawndale Beat operates Monday thru Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 6:35 p.m.; Saturdays, 8:40 a.m. to 5:55 p.m.; and Sundays, 9:20 a.m. to 5:45 p.m. Fares are an incredible $0.75! Seniors 62 years of age and older, disabled, children 6 years and younger (with a paying adult) may ride free of charge. One free transfer per passenger is available for connection to one of the neighboring transportation systems.

If you are a Lawndale resident senior 65 years or older, meet the Social Security Administration criteria of a blind or disabled person, or income does not exceed the Housing and Urban Development (HUD) established income limits for very low income families, you may qualify for a Utility Users Tax break. To obtain a Utility Users Tax Exemption Brochure, or an exemption application, please visit the Finance Department located at City Hall between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Proof of eligibility will be required for all applicants.

Winter Capital Improvements Program Update The Public Works Department is pleased to provide you with this quarterly update of the City’s Capital Improvement Program (CIP). The program covers: street, concrete and traffic improvements (including sidewalk, curb and gutter), parks and city facilities improvements. Projects are currently completed, under construction or in the planning and design phases.

Current Projects FY 2016-17 Annual Street Improvements Projects: The City’s Capital Improvement Program has identified the following streets for improvement: W. 162nd Street (Firmona Avenue to Hawthorne Boulevard) W. 164th Street (Inglewood Avenue to Freeman Avenue) W. 168th Street (Inglewood Avenue to Prairie Avenue) W. 170th Street (Inglewood Avenue to Hawthorne Boulevard) Larch Avenue (Marine Avenue to Manhattan Beach Boulevard) Prairie Avenue (North City Limits to south of 149th Street) Osage Avenue (Manhattan Beach Boulevard to W. 167th Street) Grevillea Avenue Alleyway (W. 166th Street to W. 169th Street, west of Hawthorne Boulevard) Hawthorne Boulevard Alleyway (W. 166th Street to W. 167th Street, east of Hawthorne Boulevard) The items of work for this project include cold milling and placement of asphalt pavement overlay; slurry sealing and/or cape sealing; reconstruction of curb ramps to meet the requirements of Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA); striping, reconstruction of some driveways; sidewalks, curbs and gutters; and other appurtenant work. The project is funded by Measure R, Prop C, STP-L, Gas Tax, and TDA Article 3 funds. The project is expected to be completed in December.

Safe Routes to School – Phase II: Education and Encouragement: The Safe Route to Schools (SRTS) project is a federally funded three phase project that identifies possible infrastructure improvements along proposed school routes, provides education to the public about the SRTS program and evaluates the effectiveness of the SRTS program for the Lawndale Elementary School District and the City of Lawndale. The three phases of the project are as follows: Phase I: Development of Walking Route Maps Phase II: Education and Encouragement Phase III: Assessment of Lawndale’s SRTS Program.

The services shall incorporate the SRTS 4 E’s – Encouragement, Enforcement, Education, and Evaluation. SRTS is a national program designed to increase the number of children and families who not only walk to school – but safely.

COMPLETED Projects Larch Avenue Street Improvements: The project included street improvements on Larch Avenue from 147th Street to Marine Avenue. Construction began in January 2017 and was completed this past spring. The project addressed street infrastructure deficiencies such as poor pavement conditions, drainage issues resulting from damaged gutters, outdated wheelchair ramps, damaged driveway approaches and sidewalks. The project was paid for using Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds and Los Angeles County Measure R funds.

City Sidewalk Repairs: The project scope of work included the repair of raised and damaged sidewalks, driveway approaches, curb and gutters, upgrading wheelchair ramps to meet ADA standards and localized pothole repairs. The target area included Hawthorne Boulevard, Manhattan Beach Boulevard, Marine Avenue and other city areas. This project was funded with both Proposition C and STP-L funds. The total construction cost was $457,751.

Citywide Asphalt Repairs Project: In June, the City Council awarded a construction contract to Hardy & Harper, Inc. for the City-wide Asphalt Repairs Project. Staff had inventoried numerous potholes throughout the City and have repaired them with a hot mix asphalt patch. Staff performed the project’s final inspection and found the improvements to be in conformance with the project plans and specifications. The final construction cost was $80,500.

Keep Lawndale Clean and Schedule Your Bulky Items Pick-up – it’s Free!

Single family residents are eligible for four bulky-item pickups per year, with a maximum of four items per pick-up. Residents of multi-family properties can receive one free pickup per year, per unit, with up to four items. Before you set your bulky items at the curb for pick-up, please call Republic Services to schedule a disposal appointment at (800) 299-4898. If you do not notify Republic Services beforehand, a $22.22 charge for each item collected will apply.

Holiday Tree Collection Beginning December 26th and continuing until January 6th, Republic Services will collect holiday trees placed out for collection by single family and multifamily customers on regularly scheduled trash collection days. Please remove all stands and ornaments before placing trees on the curb for collection. If a tree is longer than 7 feet, please be sure to cut it in half for an easy and safe collection. After January 6th, trees collected will count towards your 4 bulky item collections per year, so make sure you put it out for collection on or before January 6th. Medication Disposal Medicines play an important role in treating many conditions and diseases and when they are no longer needed it is important to dispose of them properly to help reduce harm from accidental exposure or intentional misuse. Consumers and caregivers should remove expired, unwanted, or unused medicines from their home as quickly as possible to help reduce the chance that others may accidentally take or intentionally misuse the unneeded medicine. For your convenience, the Walgreens in Gardena located at 1344 W. Redondo Beach Boulevard has a safe medication disposal kiosk. For more information, please call the Public Works Department.

SHARPS Collection Program Residents of the City of Lawndale can receive SHARPS containers to safely dispose of their home-generated needles, syringes and lancets (“SHARPS”) through the mail-back program offered by Republic Services.

Please do not throw used needles in the trash. Used SHARPS left loose among other waste can injure sanitation workers during collection, at sorting and recycling facilities, at landfills, or they can become lodged in equipment, forcing workers to remove them by hand. Children, adults, and even pets are also at risk for needle-stick injuries when SHARPS are disposed improperly at home or in public settings.

Lawndale residents can conveniently and safely dispose of SHARPS by following three easy steps: Step 1: R esidents can call Republic Services at (800) 299-4898 to request a free SHARPS Kit. Republic Services will mail the kit directly to your home. One kit includes one container, one pre-paid postage label and a form that must be completed.

Step 2: Residents fill up the container with used SHARPS. Step 3: Residents mail the container back for safe disposal by using the pre-paid postage label provided.

Residents are limited to one free SHARPS mail-back kit every three months. Additional kits can also be purchased from Republic Services. Call Republic Services Customer Service at (800) 299-4898 to request your free kit today.

Santa Claus is Coming to Lawndale!

Mark your calendars and get ready for Santa Claus and his Sleigh to come through your neighborhood.

Santa will be touring Lawndale looking for happy children to help spread the holiday cheer. Santa Claus will be in Lawndale for nine consecutive nights beginning Tuesday, November 28, through Friday, December 8, 2017. Because Santa has so much work to do this holiday season, he needs to get his rest and catch up on his sleep on weekends so there will be no Santa in Lawndale on December 2nd and 3rd.

When Santa comes to your neighborhood, look for the snowflake in the street; where ever Santa finds a large white snowflake that is where he will stop. Get Angel Tree Lighting Event, in line early; because Santa has so many children to Visits with Santa see and stops to make, he can’t stay long!

If you want to be one of the first to see Santa this year, he will be the special guest at the City’s Annual Angel Tree Lighting event on Monday, November 27, at 6:00 p.m. at the Lawndale Civic Center Plaza. The event starts at 4:00 p.m. Come early and get a good place in line.

Actualización de la Ordenanza de Estacionamientos para Vehículos Recreativos (RV) Para el 6 de diciembre de 2017, la ciudad tendrá nuevos reglamentos con respecto al estacionamiento de vehículos recreativos. De acuerdo a la nueva ordenanza, ya no se permitirá estacionarse a los vehículos recreativos en las calles de la ciudad a menos que al vehículo se le haya expedido un permiso temporal. Los permisos se pueden obtener dos veces por año, pero no más de siete días por cada uno.

Por definición, las camionetas con campers son consideradas vehículos recreativos.

Programas de Vigilancia Comunitaria para disuadir el crimen. ¡Comience uno en su cuadra hoy!

Los programas de vigilancia comunitaria son lo mejor para disuadir el crimen. Son las raíces de un esfuerzo para tomar el control de su propio vecindario. Se desarrollaron en los sesentas y son un movimiento comunitario con una misión de disminuir el crimen.

El proceso puede dividirse en unos pasos sencillos: 1. Comience con un comité de planeación. Reúna a algunos vecinos dispuestos a ayudar a comenzar una vigilancia del vecindario.

Programa Gratuito de Alimentos USDA El Programa de Comodidades de la Ciudad de Lawndale está abierto a gente de todas las edades que califiquen, que se encuentran en necesidad de alimentos. Los alimentos son suministrados por el Banco de Alimentos (Food Bank) del Sur de California y la Secretaría de Agricultura (USDA) de los Estados Unidos. El programa cubre: calles, concreto, y mejoras al tráfico (incluyendo banquetas y coladeras), mejoras a los parques e instalaciones de la ciudad. Los proyectos están ya completados, se encuentran en construcción o en su fase de diseño.

Rutas Seguras a las Escuelas – Fase II: Educación y Estímulo: El proyecto de la Ruta Segura para las Escuelas (SRTS) es un proyecto de tres fases, financiado con fondos federales que identifica mejoras posibles a la infraestructura de las rutas de las escuelas, educando al público sobre los programas SRTS y evaluando la eficacia del programa para el Distrito Escolar de Escuelas Primarias de Lawndale y la Ciudad de Lawndale. Las tres fases del proyecto son las siguientes: Fase I: Desarrollo de mapas para la ruta a pie Fase II: Educación y estímulo Fase III: Evaluación del Programa SRTS de Lawndale.

Proyectos COMPLETADOS Mejoras a las calles de la Avenida Larch: El proyecto incluye mejoras a las calles en la Avenida Larch, desde la calle 147, hasta la avenida Marine. La construcción comenzó en enero de 2017 y se completó en la primavera pasada. El proyecto se enbocó en deficiencias de la estructura de las calles, malas condiciones del pavimento, problemas de drenaje, dando como resultado coladeras dañadas, rampas anticuadas para sillas de ruedas, accesos viales a las residencias y comercios y banquetas. El proyecto fue pagado con fondos de un subsidio de Desarrollo Comunitario (CDBG) y fondos de la Medida R del Condado de Los Ángeles.

Reparaciones de las aceras de la ciudad: El projecto incluyó la reparación de aceras levantadas y dañadas, las vías de acceso a las residencias y comercios, banquetas, coladeras, mejorar las rampas para las sillas de ruedas para cumplir con las normas de la ley ADA, y reparación de baches/agujeros. El área objetivo incluía el Bulevar Hawthorne, el Bulevar Manhattan Beach, la Avenida Marine y otras áreas de la ciudad. Este proyecto fue financiado con fondos de la Propuesta C STP-L. El costo total de construcción fue de $457,751.

Proyecto de Reparaciones al Asfalto: En junio, el Consejo de la Ciudad adjudicó un contrato de construcción a Hardy & Harper, Inc. Para el proyecto de reparaciones de asfalto por toda la ciudad. El personal hizo un inventario de los baches/agujeros de la ciudad y los han reparado con un parche de una mezcla de asfalto caliente. Los residentes de viviendas unifamiliares son elegibles por hasta cuatro recolecciones al año, con un máximo de cuatro artículos por recolección. Los residentes de viviendas multifamiliares pueden recibir una recolección por año, por unidad, por hasta cuatro artículos. Antes de que ponga sus artículos voluminosos en la banqueta, por favor llame a Republic Services para pedir su recolección para deshacerse de su artículo, al (800) 299-4898. Si usted no notifica a Republic Services de antemano, se le hará un cargo de $22.22 por cada artículo recolectado.

Recolección del Árbol de Navidad A partir del 26 de diciembre y hasta el 6 de enero, Republic Services recogerá los árboles de Navidad que se pongan afuera para su recolección por los clientes en las viviendas unifamiliares y multifamiliares, en su día de recolección regular de basura. Santa Claus viene a Lawndale Marque sus calendarios y prepárese para recibir a Santa Claus y su trineo que pasará por su vecindario.
