Dear Friends in Christ, The Committee on Cultural Diversity in the Church pursues the goal of making diversity and its implications more recognized and understood among church leaders—clergy, religious, and laity. This is urgently needed given the profound demographic shift that the Church is currently undergoing. Knowledge, attitudes, and skills that effectively foster unity in diversity must be nurtured among our leadership and the faithful in general.

The “One Church Many Cultures” newsletter is launched to help better understand each other and unite all of us under God in the Church.

For the Church unity in diversity is a requirement of catholicity, one of the marks of the Church. This is of special importance today because of globalization, migration, and the interdependence of people in our country and throughout the world.

In addition to advancing greater competence in intercultural relations in ministry, our committee seeks to collaborate with the bishops in carrying out their priorities in the areas of faith formation, social justice, the promotion of marriage, and the fostering of vocations to the priesthood and the religious life. In all these areas pastoral adaption to the cultural and language needs of the Catholic community is a strategic necessity.

Immigrant youth and the children of immigrants are the hope of the Church now and for decades to come. Youth ministry, religious education, and Catholic schools must be competent and eager to nurture this young Church so that they can zealously assume the mission of Christ.

Queridos amigos en Cristo, El Comité para la Diversidad Cultural en la Iglesia tiene como objetivo hacer que la diversidad, y todo lo que ella implica, sea más reconocida y entendida por los líderes de la iglesia—el clero, los religiosos y los laicos. Ésta es una necesidad urgente dado el profundo cambio demográfico que está experimentando la Iglesia hoy. Debemos sustentar entre nuestro liderazgo y entre los fieles en general, un mejor conocimiento, actitudes y habilidades que fomenten eficazmente la unidad en la diversidad.

El "Una Iglesia Muchas Culturas" boletín se pone en e marcha para ayudar a promover una mejor comprensión de los demás y unirnos a todos en Dios en la Iglesia.

Para la Iglesia, la unidad en la diversidad es un requisito del catolicismo, uno de los atributos de la Iglesia. Hoy, esto tiene una importancia especial debido a la globalización, las migraciones y la interdependencia de los pueblos en nuestro país y en el mundo.

Además de promover una mejor aptitud en las relaciones interculturales dentro del ministerio, nuestro Comité desea colaborar con los obispos en el cumplimiento de sus prioridades en las áreas de la formación en la fe, la justicia social, la promoción del matrimonio, y en el fomento de las vocaciones al sacerdocio y a la vida religiosa.

En todas estas áreas, la adaptación pastoral a las necesidades culturales y de idioma de la comunidad católica es una necesidad estratégica.

Two hundred years later, the Church in America can rightfully praise the accomplishment of past generations in bringing together widely differing immigrant groups within the unity of the Catholic faith and in a common commitment to the spread of the Gospel. At the same time, conscious of its rich diversity, the Catholic community in this country has come to appreciate ever more fully the importance of each individual and group offering its own particular gifts to the whole. The Church in the United States is now called to look to the future, firmly grounded in the faith passed on by previous generations, and ready to meet new challenges— challenges no less demanding than those faced by your forebears—with the hope born of God’s love, poured into our hearts by the Holy Spirit (cf. Rom 5:5).

Building Intercultural Competence: Sign of the Times Background In 2008 the bishops established recognition of cultural diversity as one of their five major priorities. The first activity recommended by the Bishops’ Task Force on this priority dealt with the need for guidelines for culturally competent ministries. A national consultation was held in January 2010 for the purpose of advising the Secretariat of Cultural Diversity on the content and methodology of a possible workshop on intercultural competence. In May 2010 more than three hundred key leaders from the major cultural/racial families of Catholics joined together at the University of Notre Dame for the highly successful Catholic Cultural Diversity Network Convocation. Here the coming workshop was announced as follow-up to the historic gathering. With the help of consultants the Secretariat devised a draft outline of the workshop which was discussed by the full Committee on Cultural Diversity (more than 40 bishops!) at their June 2010 gathering in St. Petersburg, FL. It was at this meeting that the suggestions was made that the workshop be piloted in 2011 and that care be taken not to “re-invent the wheel” by surveying efforts already made in this area of multicultural competencies by (arch)dioceses and

by Catholic, private or public institutes, colleges and universities.

Three pilot workshops took place in April-May 2011—in San Bernardino, CA, Washington DC and Des Moines, IA. The Center for Applied Research on the Apostolate at Georgetown University assisted with pre and postworkshop surveys/evaluations of participants. At their June 2011 meeting in Seattle the Committee will again review the findings with a view toward offering all the bishops to attend a mini-workshop in connection with their Annual Meeting in Baltimore in November. The bishops, of course, may want to alter something or add another step in the process. The expectation, however, is for a rolling out of the workshop in the form of training of trainers workshops in 2012 and beyond.

Content Titled Building Intercultural Competence for Ministers, workshop consists of five modules that each require about 2-3 hours of contact time to develop. The five modules are: Reading Cultural Settings in the Light of the New Evangelizations Introducing Intercultural Competence: Communications Styles and Skills Stereotypes and Prejudices Including Racism Working with Groups in Intercultural/Interracial Settings Pastoral Issues in Shared/Intercultural Parishes

Fomentando La Capacidad Intercultural: Una Señal De Los Tiempos Información general En el 2008, los obispos establecieron el reconocimiento de la diversidad cultural como una de sus cinco prioridades principales.

La primera actividad recomendada por el Grupo de trabajo de los obispos en relación a esta prioridad, tenía que ver con la necesidad de contar con directrices para unos ministerios competentes que respeten la diversidad cultural. En enero del 2010, se realizó una consulta nacional con el propósito de asesorar al Secretariado para la diversidad cultural sobre el contenido y la metodología a usarse en un posible taller sobre capacidad intercultural. En mayo del 2010, más de trescientos líderes claves de las principales familias católicas culturales y raciales se reunieron en la Universidad de Notre Dame participando en la exitosa Catholic Cultural Diversity Network Convocation. Allí se anunció que el futuro taller serviría de seguimiento a esta histórica reunión. El Secretariado, asistido por unos consultores, elaboró un borrador del diagrama del taller el cual fue revisado por todo el Comité para la Diversidad Cultural (más de cuarenta obispos) en su reunión de junio del 2010, en St. Petersburg, Fl. Fue en esta reunión que surgió la recomendación que el taller piloto se haga en el 2011 y que se tenga cuidado en no tratar de “reinventar la rueda” estudiando trabajos anteriores, sobre este mismo tema de la capacidad multicultural, realizados por (arqui)diócesis y por institutos públicos y privados y escuelas y universidades católicas.

Entre abril y mayo del 2011, se realizaron tres talleres piloto—en San Bernardino, CA, en Washington, DC y en Des Moines, IA. El Center for Applied Research on the Apostolate, en la Universidad de Georgetown, prestó su ayuda realizando encuestas/ evaluaciones de los participantes antes y después de los talleres.

African American Catholics Celebrate Life The Subcommittee on African American Affairs has focused on life issues in Black communities. The objective of the study was to research Black Catholics regarding their views, concerns, and comments on life issues from conception to natural death. The average participant was female over the age of 50 living in the South.

All of them are very involved in Church activities. A second phase of the survey will focus on teens and young adults which will be conducted in the Fall, 2011.

The study reveals the importance that Family plays in providing models and mentors and creating a supportive environment for individuals facing challenges of life. Bishop Martin D. Holley, chairman of the subcommittee on African American Affairs, recently wrote in A Reflection on the African American Family and the Culture of Life "In my opinion, the abortion challenge in the African American community is deeply inter-woven with many other concerns."

The Black family constantly strives for social justice in confronting racism, poverty, violence, a lack of education, high unemployment, substance abuse, incarceration, AIDS, teen pregnancy, a lack of affordable housing, and many other needs, especially in urban areas.

This endless and seamless garment of social concerns often tends to push the primary moral issue of abortion onto the back burner, when in reality it clearly must be at the heart and center of our discussion on the survival of African American people.

The subcommittee continues to lift up and support the National Black Catholic Apostolate for Life for their extraordinary work in addressing Black Pro Life issues. For the past fourteen years, the National Black Catholic Apostolate for Life has designated June as a time for Black Catholics to actively raise consciousness regarding abortion and acts of violence within our community.

El objetivo del estudio fue realizar una investigación sobre los católicos negros acerca de su modo de pensar, de sus preocupaciones y de sus observaciones sobre asuntos relacionados a la vida, desde la concepción hasta la muerte natural. El participante promedio fue mujer, mayor de 50 años y vive en el sur del país. Todas están muy involucradas en las actividades de la Iglesia. Una segunda fase de la encuesta, que se llevará a cabo en el otoño del 2011, se enfocará en los adolescentes y en los jóvenes adultos.

Asian and Pacific Presence: Harmony In Faith (2001-2011)

In 2001, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) promulgated the pastoral statement, Asian and Pacific Presence: Harmony in Faith. It was a moment of grace. USCCB, for the first time, gave official formal recognition to the presence of Asian and Pacific Islander Catholics in the Church in this country.

Since then, the pastoral statement has inspired many efforts in parishes, dioceses, and national initiatives, paying attention to the continuing need to evangelize Asian and Pacific American families and fulfilling several critical recommendations contained in the document. Two significant national actions have been sources of affirmation and inspiration. First, five bishops of Asian and Pacific origins (Chinese, Vietnamese, Filipino, Indian and Guamanian) have been elevated to the episcopate. Second, the USCCB created a Committee on Cultural Diversity in the Church in 2008 which has within its structure, a Subcommittee on Asian and Pacific Island Affairs (SCAPA), serving side-by-side with subcommittees responsible for the pastoral care of Hispanics, African Americans, Native Americans, and Migrants, Refugees and Travelers. An Assistant Director in the Secretariat of Cultural Diversity in the Church provides full time assistance to SCAPA. She supports pastoral initiatives which currently reaches 24 Asian and Pacific communities: Bangali, Burmese, Cambodian, Chinese, Filipino, Hmong, Indian Roman, Indian Syro-Malabar, Indian Syro-Malankara, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Kmhmu, Laotian, Montagnard, Pakistani, Sri Lankan, Thai, Vietnamese, Chamorro, Hawaiian, Fijian, Samoan, and Tongan Catholics.

Ten Years After

Asian and Pacific Presence: Harmony in Faith also recommended continued leadership formation among Asian and Pacific pastoral leaders so they can, not only lead their communities to a closer relationship with Christ, but also become more active leaders in their local parishes. In the last ten years, at least ten regional Asian and Pacific Institutes for Mission and Ministry were offered in the west, the Midwest, and the east regions of the country. These were programs organized collaboratively between the national secretariat, several dioceses, and Catholic educational institutions. Moreover, a historic National Asian and Pacific Catholic Convocation brought more than 1,200 participants to Crystal City, Virginia in 2006 for a four-day leadership program. Several dioceses now hold annual “Asian Catholics Day,” enriching events targeting youth and young adult leaders and offering seminars, retreats, pilgrimages and multicultural celebrations.

To commemorate the 10th anniversary of the pastoral statement, the Subcommittee on Asian and Pacific Island Affairs commissioned a nation-wide survey to assess the state of ministry to Asian and Pacific Catholics. Results will be available in early 2012. In addition, two educational materials are being developed: “A Primer on Asian and Pacific Islander Catholics in the USA” and “Common Prayers.” The latter will be in written and audio forms and will be available in at least 20 Asian and Pacific languages. These materials are projected to be posted on the SCAPA website in 2012.

The 10th anniversary is also being celebrated with various events in several dioceses and archdioceses. One celebration was held on May 21, 2011 in Washington DC where 18 Asian ethnic communities gathered to celebrate, “Asian and Pacific Catholics Day.” A very interesting seminar, “Catholic Identity: Being Asian Pacific, American, and Catholic Today” was offered at the Catholic University of America in the morning; and, a beautiful, colorful pilgrimage was held at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in the afternoon. Pilgrim devotees of the Blessed Mother came from the Archdioceses of Baltimore, New York, Philadelphia and Washington; and, the Dioceses of Arlington, Brooklyn, Charlotte, Greensboro, Harrisburg, and Richmond. Prayers and songs for the rosary and Holy Mass were in 14 Asian and Pacific languages.

When asked about the significance of the 10th anniversary celebration, Pastor Mario, a leader in the Filipino Ministry of Northern Virginia said, “The 10th anniversary is significant because it confirms the commitment of the Catholic Bishops to continue to bring the Asian and Pacific communities into the Catholic Church. The Asian Pacific people are reminded to faithfully continue the collaboration among us and with other cultural communities in the Church. Presencia Asiática y del Pacífico: Armonía en la Fe (2001-2011)

por lo menos, diez programas regionales llamados Asian and Pacific Institutes for Mission and Ministry, en el oeste, en el medio este y en las regiones al este del país. Estos fueron unos programas organizados en forma colaborativa entre el secretariado nacional, diversas diócesis e instituciones católicas educativas. El 21 de mayo del 2011, hubo una celebración en Washington, DC en donde se reunieron 18 comunidades étnicas asiáticas para celebrar Asian and Pacific Catholics Day. Durante la mañana se realizó un seminario muy interesante llamado Catholic Identity: Being Asian Pacific, American, and Catholic Today en la Catholic University of America y, luego, en la tarde, se hizo un peregrinaje muy lindo y colorido en la Basílica de la Inmaculada Concepción. From the desk of Alejandro Aguilera-Titus - 2011 Initiatives The year 2011 has been a very special one for discerning the signs of the times. Let’s ponder on a few of these signs: The great anti-immigrant wave of 2010 seems to be losing its strength, at least, at the legislative level The 2010 Census again shows that the Hispanic/Latino population has had the highest growth since the year 2000 and that it is the one projected to grow the most by the year 2020 The number of parishes with Hispanic/Latino ministry is now close to 4,500 The Church in the United States, for the first time in its history, has two active Hispanic/Latino archbishops. Archbishop Jose Gomez in the largest archdiocese of the country, Los Angeles; and Archbishop Gustavo Garcia-Siller in the historic Archdiocese of San Antonio.

This hotchpotch of cultures and races calls for the church to be ready to achieve a healthy and fraternal integration of all its distinct members under the model of unity in diversity. The USCCB Secretariat for Cultural Diversity in the Church is working on three projects to facilitate this healthy and fraternal integration in the upcoming years. The first one has to do with the development of an ‘Intercultural Competence,’ which would allow us to acquire the necessary knowledge, attitudes and abilities to interact, in a positive way, with people of different cultures. The second one has to do with parish processes which will serve to achieve a good level of integration among culturally diverse peoples and communities which make up the parish community. The third one has to do with the strengthening of national and regional Hispanic ministry organizations so they may fulfill their mission in a more effective way.

The Guia para Lideres was published in February of 2011 and distributed to all bishops in the United States. The document is being featured in the Por Tu Matrimonio’s monthly Boletin (newsletter). Staff has promoted the use of the Guia para Lideres at the “Los Angeles Religious Education Congress” and among Hispanic Catholic national organizations and ecclesial movements like the Movimiento Familiar Cristiano. A bookmark was produced and distributed with the slogan: “Que Haras por tu Matrimonio Hoy?”

Radio Spots Campaign on Marriage

Under the theme Matrimonios que Inspiran (Marriages that Inspire), nine radio public service announcements were created and produced during the first quarter of 2011. The first three PSA’s were distributed in April and are being played in more than 700 Spanishspeaking radio stations across the country, which represents more than 80% of all radio stations reaching Hispanics/ Latinos in Spanish in the country.

The second set of thee PSA’s will be available in June, 2011, and the third set in September 2011. The broadcasting of the PSAs in such a high percentage of Spanish-speaking radio stations was secured through a public relations strategy including meetings with high level executives from four of the major media corporations with Spanish-speaking audiences.

Bishops Gabino Zavala and Felipe Estevez provided invaluable input during these important meetings. We contracted with Openmedia, a media corporation based in Miami, FL to develop the PSA’s and to coordinate their distribution to Spanish-speaking radio stations in the United States.

Website Portumatrimonio (PTM) February 14, 2011 marked the first anniversary of the website PTM. During its first year, Portumatrimonio.org surpassed 100,000 visits and generated a following of more than 1,000 fans on Facebook. These numbers are projected to increase significantly during 2011 as the website counts now with new features including: a monthly Boletin (newsletter), a weekly blog, daily postings on Facebook and a PSAs radio campaign already underway. Collaboration with apostolic movements and with the National Association of Catholic Family Life Ministers to promote PTM has proven to be very beneficial for ministry among Spanish-speaking married couples and families.

Las antiguas parroquias nacionales o personales que tuvieron muchísimo éxito en el siglo XIX y principios del siglo XX, ya no son factibles hoy debido a la escasez de sacerdotes capaces de hablar varios idiomas y que no están familiarizados con las diversas culturas. Como lo demuestra un reciente estudio realizado por CARA, un 33% de las parroquias en Estados Unidos tienen programas en un idioma distinto al inglés y, cada año, esa cifra crece más. Kateri Tekakwitha - Lily of the Mohawks Tekakwitha was born in 1656 of a Christian Catholic Algonquin mother and a traditional Mohawk Chief in a village called Ossernenon along the Mohawk River.

A smallpox epidemic swept through the Mohawk village and claimed the lives of Tekakwitha's parents and baby brother. She survived the disease but it left her eyesight impaired and her body scarred. It also left her physically weak for the rest of her life.

Orphaned at age 4, she was adopted by her aunt and uncle.

In 1670, St. Peter's Mission was established in Caughnawaga (now Fonda, New York).

Four years later, Father James de Lamberville became responsible for the new mission.

Tekakwitha met Father de Lamberville and expressed her desire for baptism.

On April 5, 1676 she was baptized and was given the name Kateri. In August, 1677, Kateri was encouraged and assisted to leave her Mohawk village and live at Sault St. Louis, St. Francis Xavier Mission near Montreal, Canada. After a long and strenuous trip, she arrived at the Sault with the help of friends. Finally, she would be able to practice her Christian ways with greater openness and freedom.

On Christmas Day, 1677, Kateri received her first Holy Communion. On March 25, 1679, Kateri pronounced her vow of perpetual virginity. Her life was devoted to teaching prayers to children and helping the sick and aged until she became very frail and weak.

On April 17, 1680, she died at the age of 24. Her last words were: "Iesos konoronkwa," "Jesus, I love you." A few minutes after her death, those around her bedside witnessed the ugly scars on her face suddenly disappear.

On January 3, 1943, she was declared Venerable by Pope Pius XII. On June 22, 1980, she was beatified by Pope John Paul II in Rome.

Pastoral Care of Migrants, Refugees and Travelers Evangelization and Service maritime ports representing fifty dioceses have Apostleship of the sea chaplains and pastoral workers who meet the spiritual needs and practical support to this people on the move.

The United States’ identity as a nation is rooted in the immigrant experience. People from many lands and from diverse cultural backgrounds have enriched civic, societal and church life and at the same time challenge policies and structures to respect life and dignity, including that of the newly arrived.

The Catholic Church in the United States has a tradition of welcome to new comers. Her concern for immigrants, refugees, travelers and people on the move has been articulated concretely in the context of the times, through various programs, activities and pastoral outreach.

At the heart of the Church’ mission of evangelization is to reach and seek out the faithful especially those who are marginalized, including people on the move. People on the move is categorized as such because by the nature of the work and lifestyle, these groups are unable to access regular parish/church services.

One example of people on the move is the mariners/ seafarers. Seafaring life is not a profession for the faint hearted. Mariners/seafares are often on the seas for months on end. For Catholic seafarers, this means not being able to go to Mass or avail of the sacraments on a regular basis. Being away from the family and seeing them once or twice a year puts added pressure for a seafarer, whose conditions on board the ship are often challenging and lonely. With increasing port automation and technology, ships have a quick turn around at port and so seafarers’ shore visit is shortened as well. In addition, because of security issues in the United States and elsewhere, restrictive visa policies and port regulations make it difficult for many seafarers to access shore leave while on port.

The US bishops in November 14, 2005, designated and approved May 22nd as National Day of Prayer and Remembrance for mariners and all people of the sea, to encourage Catholics in the country to support, remember and pray for merchant mariners/seafarers, fishermen, port personnel and those in the maritime industry.

The Day of Prayer and remembrance is observed in conjunction with National Maritime Day in the United States of America, celebrated since 1933 to honor those who serve as merchant mariners and to recognize the benefits of the maritime industry.

In observance of the National Day of prayer and remembrance, the AOS national office sponsors Maritime Day Mass. On May 22, 2011, a Maritime Day Mass was celebrated at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, Washington, DC. Bishop Joseph Estabrook, Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese for the Military Services was principal celebrant and homilist. Representatives from the maritime community, including officials from the Maritime Administration, Coast Guard, the Philippines Ambassador to the United States, families and friends of mariners and seafarers gathered to pray and be in solidarity with those who work in the maritime world.

Bringing the Good News to mariners/ seafarers, is at the core of the evangelizing mission of the Church that AOS pastoral workers embrace and service through the many forms of hospitality and advocacy are concretely extended.

In order to meet the special pastoral needs of seafarers and all people of the sea, the Church’ solicitude has established the ministry to mariners/seafarers and all people of the sea called Apostleship of the Sea (AOS), an international maritime ministry coordinated by AOS office in the Pontifical Council for the Pastoral Care of Migrants and Itinerant People, Vatican. In dioceses with maritime ports, priests, deacons, religious and lay people extend spiritual and practical assistance through ship visitation, providing the sacraments, providing escort services and transportation, having a seafarer’s center where seafarers can avail of amenities ranging from a chapel, communication facilities such as computer access or telephone booths or simply a place to relax. In the USA, sixty

A Joyful Celebration of One With the Family: African and Caribbean Presence in the United States Catholic Church Despite our different cultures, gender, religions, language and race the human persons - men and women are created in the image and likeness of God (Genesis 1:26-27). As the United States Bishops noted, “The Church of the twenty-first century will be, as it has always been, a Church of many cultures, languages, and traditions, yet simultaneously one, as God is one - Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—unity in diversity.” (Welcoming the Stranger Among Us: Unity In Diversity, A Statement of the U.S. Catholic Bishops, November 2000) It was a time of united prayer, enrichment, and fellowship on Saturday, March 26, 2011 at The Catholic University of America in Washington D.C. The event gathered over 250 African and Caribbean Catholics, including African and Caribbean Catholic Clergy and Women Religious to pray together, to celebrate the gifts of their rich culture and their vibrant religious heritage which they brought to enrich the Church in the United States. It was a celebration marked with mutual faith sharing and experience of Christ’s love among the people. The central focus of the colloquium was on African and Caribbean Presence in the United States Catholic Church. The colloquium included enlightening and inspiring workshops, breakout/ dialogue sessions and Mass.

Included among the participants were Most Rev. Rutilio J. Del Riego, Auxiliary Bishop of San Bernardino and Chairman Subcommittee on Pastoral Care of Migrants, Refugees and Travelers.

Rev. Allan F. Deck, SJ, Executive Director of the Secretariat of Cultural Diversity in the Church at the USCCB. Presenters include: Rev. Aniedi Okure, OP from the Catholic University of America, Dr. Gerald Boodoo from Duquesne University, and Rev. Michael Montoya, MJ, Executive Director, United State Catholic Mission Association. In an effort to carry out the mandate and to replicate the ideas of the Cultural Diversity Convocation which was organized May 6-8, 2010 in South Bend, Indiana by the Secretariat of Cultural Diversity in the Church. The Colloquium included the shared experiences of all in the Family - African American, Hispanic American, European American, Native American, Asian and Pacific Islanders Family and the Pastoral Care of Migrants, Refugees and Travelers family.

Indeed we saw that there are positive experiences in relating to persons of different cultural/racial groups. Participants were encouraged to find ways to promote unity and harmony among all the children of God in their parish/diocese as well as what can facilitate welcoming and embracing one another into one family of God? The success of this colloquium was an indication that united; we can serve as agents of social transformation. Generally the celebrations, made great impact on many people as evidenced in the testimonies and reports that were sent to us. This is the basis for the desire for another gathering as expressed by many participants. This great celebration will live a long and cherished memory in the minds of so many. I hope that African and Caribbean Catholics and indeed all participants were spiritually empowered and motivated as they return to their respective parishes to become more dynamic, enthusiastic and active in living out their faith as Catholics.

Cultural Diversity has a privileged place in our society. The human community despite its diversity can portray the goodness of God. We can come together not only embracing shared beliefs and values but to acknowledge our differences in ways that promote respect and appreciation of our presence a one family of God. Faltan 45 días para que me encuentre compartiendo una de esas experiencias de toda la vida con miles y miles de jóvenes adultos. 45 días para arrodillarme, en adoración, con mi familia, la Iglesia universal, en Madrid, España, en la Jornada Mundial de la Juventud del 2011."

The workshop uses an adult learning approach that alternates input from presenters with group work which allows for the experience of the participants to stand out. The pedagogy also demonstrates collaboration among a culturally diverse team of presenters.

Why This?

One of the more dramatic “signs of the times” noted more and more by pastoral and social researchers is the rise of what Paulist Fr. Brett Hoover calls “shared” parishes. These are congregations made up of a bewildering combination of cultural, ethnic and racial groups. The old national or personal parishes that were fabulously successful going back to the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries are often not possible today given the dearth of priests capable of speaking the various languages and familiar with the diverse cultures. As a recent CARA study shows 33% of U.S. parishes have programs in a language other than English and the number is growing annually. Even when only English is spoken the cultural backgrounds of the people is extremely diverse— African American and African, Caribbean and Asian Catholic English-speakers filling the ranks of so many of our parishes. Moreover, what is happening in our parishes is also happening in our seminaries and among the presbyterates! The cultural diversity of our priests and deacons, religious men and women and lay leaders grows dramatically year by year. That is why intercultural competence is so fundamental today and has been added to the competencies expected in every kind of ministry—Episcopal, priestly, religious, catechetical, youth and young adult, teaching and so forth.
