Youth and Teen Program Highlights!

Youth Triathlon Team In 2010 the City of West Hollywood Recreation Services Division created a new program as an offshoot of their very popular youth swim team: The West Hollywood Gators Triathlon team. This youth triathlon team developed from the positive influence that several of the West Hollywood Pool Lifeguards had on the swim team participants. The youth tri-team has been a tremendous success from the very beginning. Approximately 15 youth have been training and successfully completed several competitions. Most recently, 11 members of the team traveled to San Diego on May 22, 2011 and participated in the Iron Kids San Diego Triathlon. All of the team members did very well and their parents and coaches are proud of the dedication and commitment these young athletes show to their newly adopted hobby. Two of the West Hollywood team participants have not only qualified for the US Iron Kids Hy-Vee Championship to take place in September, but have also qualified to compete at the US Iron Kids National Championship in Iowa. The team begins a new training session in June as they prepare for the Hanson Dam Triathlon on August 21st. The team is led by coaches Alejandro Banuelos, Victor Garibay and Cesar Romero. For more information on the West Hollywood Gators Triathlon team, contact the West Hollywood Pool at (323) 848-6538.

City and Sheriff Staff attest that in addition to the theater skills that participants learn, the program also helps foster development and self esteem in all of the teen thespians. T.A.G. has produced three major productions since it's inception in 2009. Productions have included Grease, Showstoppers and Rock the Holidays. Recently the Guild was in production of their latest show entitled, "And the Hits Keep on Coming", which was performed in Fiesta Hall June 16, 17 and 18. Waste Prevention Being “green” is usually pretty easy, but sometimes it requires changing long established habits. 1. Use mugs instead of paper cups (paper before styrofoam), cloth instead of paper napkins, rags instead of paper towels. 2. Double-side photocopies; use reverse sides of paper. 3. Buy concentrates, larger sized products, or products in bulk. However, if buying household hazardous products, buy only what you need and share your leftovers. 4. Buy returnable/recyclable glass, metal or plastic containers. 5. Ask for recycled paper at stationers and printers. 6. Bring your own canvas shopping bags to the market, or reuse paper bags. 7. Recycle motor oil, tires and scrap metal. 8. Don't use disposable plastic items, like razors. Instead, buy durable products. 9. For infants, use cloth or biodegradable diapers. 10. No drugs down the drain! Dispose of expired or unused drugs at a hazardous waste roundup. 11. Leave grass clippings on the lawn when mowing. 12. Only use rechargeable batteries. 13. Dispose of household hazardous waste at County-sponsored roundups. 14. Close the loop by buying products made from recycled material.
