REGISTER TO VOTE! The Deadline to Register for the Next Election is February 17

Register online to vote — the deadline for registration is Tuesday, February 17, 2015 in order to vote in the March 3 municipal election. There is a link to register to vote on the City’s website at www.weho.org/elections, which will take you to the California Secretary of State’s Voter Registration page to register online. You must be 18 years of age, a United States citizen, and a resident of California. You will need your California driver license, the last four digits of your social security number, and your date of birth to complete registration.

The City of West Hollywood’s General Municipal Election will be held on Tuesday, March 3, 2015 to fill three seats on the West Hollywood City Council for a four-year term commencing in March 2015.

Consider voting by mail — The Vote by Mail period begins on Monday, February 2, 2015 and ends on Tuesday, February 24, 2015; Vote by Mail ballots will be mailed directly to individuals who complete the application. Find your polling place — If you prefer to vote on Election Day, March 3, find your polling place at www.lavote.net/ locator. What’s Growin’ On?! Community Garden Information Workshop Saturday, February 21, 10 am at Plummer Park

Potential urban gardeners are invited to Plummer Park on Saturday, February 21, 2015 at 10 am for an overview of the community garden program, information on how to apply for a garden plot, and will also receive helpful gardening tips on container gardening, planting schedules, and common garden bugs, slugs, and other thugs! If you are interested in getting on the waiting list for a plot at the Detroit Community Garden please be sure to bring your Driver’s License and a recent utility bill with your name on it or proof of employment within the West Hollywood city limits. Did you know the City of West Hollywood has operated a Community Garden Program since 1985? The current garden site is located at 1201 Detroit Avenue at the corner of Lexington, and is home to 33 garden plots. Anyone who lives or works in West Hollywood may apply for a plot, which are rented at $100/ annually to cover the cost of utilities, for a maximum of three years. Commercial use of plots is not allowed and are limited to one plot per household. A waiting list for garden plots is maintained by the City.

In fact, this commitment is part of the City’s Climate Action Plan, a component of the General Plan, which prioritizes “green spaces that provide valuable recreation and healthy services to the community.” What better way to say “Parks Make Life Better”! This issue of the Recreation Reader is full of opportunities for recreation and wellness. Just in time to help you keep your New Year’s resolutions, check out our NEW adult classes under the weFitness banner for weBox, weStroll, and weCardio! Enjoy traditional favorites such as water aerobics classes and lap swim, or play some tennis! Parents, are you looking for a well-deserved break? WeHo Dodgeball is Southern California’s premier adult co-ed dodgeball league. With a rotating membership of over 2,000 players, WeHo Dodgeball provides a healthy mix of fun and competition. Our soft rubber “no sting” balls help to create an environment that welcomes all people from prom queens to drag queens. Our goal is to provide a fun and active alternative to people looking for a social scene in the West Hollywood area. While the goal is to eliminate your opponents on the court, the social part of Dodgeball is just as important as the game itself. WeHo Dodgeball’s commitment to community outreach is a cornerstone of our operating charter. From fundraising for local charities to participating in health and fitness events, our members partake in a wide-array of charitable endeavors aimed at strengthening our connection to the community we call home. The mission of West Hollywood Sheriff’s Station Youth Activities League (YAL) is to unite law enforcement and communities by providing youth programs which develop discipline, positive self-image, mutual trust and respect. Join us for upcoming activities such as our Teen Actors Guild (T.A.G.) Theatre Program, BEAR Bicycle Program, Film Production and various fun-filled excursions. Become a real competitor playing one of sports’ favorite past times! Hoops University by Davis Basketball Development offers Los Angeles’s most exciting, well-rounded series of basketball classes for 6-12 year olds. At Hoops Uni, your tots and teens will learn the fundamentals of basketball, sportsmanship, camaraderie, and organization. Our class model is designed so that our students become stellar competitors and leaders on and off the court. At Hoops Uni, students will receive individual as well as group instruction on basketball basics like shooting, dribbling and passing. Our kids will put their skills to the test in full-court basketball games, and they’ll have opportunities to win prizes and trophies based on their performance and participation.

The City of West Hollywood believes your child is a star and West Hollywood Park is the stage. This program will focus on introducing kids to the basic fundamentals of sports. Your child will participate in fun and creative group demonstrations that will help enhance your child’s motor skills as well as hand/eye coordination. Your child will gain valuable experience as they learn new skills that will help them in a variety of sports for many years to come. Each session will end with a modified instructional game. Ages: 4 – 7 years | Cost: $60 (6 week session) Location: West Hollywood Park, Great Lawn Instructor: Miles Tee-Ball This six week class will focus on teaching basic batting, throwing, and running techniques that will help your child advance their overall motor skills. If so, West Hollywood Park is now offering a Flag Football program dedicated to teaching your child the basic fundamentals of flag football. During this six week program, your child will learn valuable new skills, and the meaning of sportsmanship while competing against other kids. You’ll have a choice of beef, pork, ham, or turkey sandwich on garlic toast served with BBQ beans, and a soft drink. Shortly after lunch, we will drive to the Nethercutt Collection at 1:00 pm for a 2-hour guided tour of the museum. As you pass through the Great Bronze Doors of the museum established by J.B. Nethercutt you will view a priceless collection of Black Iron and Classic Automobiles, music boxes, mechanical instruments, antique furnishings, dolls, crystals, a Wurlitzer Pipe Organ, Pullman Private Car, and many hidden treasures. After our guided tour we start back over to Nethercutt to do a self-guided tour of the other automobile building. Tours last up to 1 hour then we return back home.

The celebration will commence on the 3rd day of May in the year of 2015. Vendors will be selling swords, clothing, jewelry, bows, toys, arts and crafts, and more for visitors to peruse through. The West Hollywood Pool strives to offer affordable and safe Aquatics Programs for the entire community. These aquatic programs are offered to people of all ages. The pool is located at 647 N. San Vicente Boulevard between Melrose and Santa Monica. It is conveniently located inside of the West Hollywood Park, adjacent to the West Hollywood Library. REGISTRATION/RESERVATION AND REFUND POLICY Registration Information R egistration is required for all recreation programs. Register early, as programs may have to be cancelled without the minimum enrollment.  Recreation programs are NOT prorated.  Register online at www.weho.org/recreation or you may register in person at West Hollywood Park and Pool or Plummer Park.  Check, credit card, or money order are accepted forms of payment. NO CASH.

Late Pick-Up Policy P arents and/or Guardians must pick-up children and youth participants ON TIME at the end of each class or camp day. THERE IS NO GRACE PERIOD. Should the participant be picked up late, a $1 per minute late fee will be charged, starting the minute after the end of class. Late fees must be paid before the child can return to the program or class. If a parent or guardian is repeatedly late picking up their child, they risk suspension from the program without refund.
