From the Director

Welcome Rec Readers! As the year 2019 comes to an end, we can reflect on this as being a very productive year. Productive can mean several things; such as park and recreation employees being responsible stewards of the parks, implementing fun and trendsetting programs, remaining diligent in their responsiveness to the public, creating spectacular special events, and also just building a positive relationship with our West Hollywood community. Factor in new projects such as the upcoming Aquatic and Recreation Center currently under construction at West Hollywood Park, along with participation numbers at an all-time high; I think this has made for a very productive and fulfilling year.

New!

Ever thought your life could be a book? Or perhaps you've thought about writing a personal essay. This course will give you an introduction to the growing world of Creative Nonfiction. What makes a nonfiction work creative and how can we incorporate the creative part of “creative nonfiction?” Memoirs are literary accounts of something factual (Merriam-Webster definition: a narrative composed from personal experience), and what makes them different from traditional forms of nonfiction like the autobiography and biography is their ability to take interesting and new forms, crossing genres, sometimes incorporating fiction and the lyrical essay. We will explore notable works by Patti Smith, Joe Brainard, and James Baldwin, to name a few, and you will get to try your hand in this ever-timely genre. Please bring a notebook and something to write with.
