LA NUEVA VERDAD DEL ESTRECHO

Exclusive Interview with the new Miss Gibraltar 2017: Jodie Garcia

“I wish to inspire our community by being the authentic and humble woman I believe I am, by being a good example – people watch what you do more than they listen to what you say, and by doing everything and anything I can to help and support our people. The message I would like to send is simple… follow your dreams no matter how big, reach for the stars and most importantly;

stay true to who you are”

T

hese are the inspirational words spoken by 25-yearold Jodie Garcia, who on the warm summer evening of the 8th of July, in front of all the lights, cameras and cheering audience members, was crowned the new Miss Gibraltar 2017. Overwhelmed with emotion and the gravity of her achievement, a visibly shocked Jodie walked towards centre stage, hand on mouth, and the crown was handed over by the 2016 winner, Kayley Mifsud, as she exchanged words of congratulations with the new Miss Gibraltar. Another spectacular show produced by Christian Santos, who we interviewed in our 3rd edition on the 22nd of June, the Miss Gibraltar 2017 pageant had it all – the lights, international and local acts, music and performances, and an explosion of special effects and confetti. At Reach, we interviewed the newest ambassador to Gibraltar, Miss Gibraltar 2017, Jodie Garcia to find out what she feels about her success.

“It still feels unreal, when I look back it feels like a dream… the whole night, including the celebrations after, flew by too fast, so it took some time to digest and it all and realise that I actually am Miss Gibraltar! I feel extremely happy and honoured to have been given this amazing opportunity to be an ambassador for Gibraltar and I will do my absolute best to serve and help my country and community in every way possible.” After having two of her closest friends enter Miss Gibraltar, seeing their journey of personal growth, she decided to take the plunge herself and enter the pageant. “It was a very positive experience for them, and I thought there was nothing to lose and everything to gain!” Being one of Gibraltar’s most anticipated and most watched event of the year, entering the Miss Gibraltar pageant is a nerve-racking experience for any contestant, Jodie told us about her challenges through the process:

“My biggest challenge was the fear of putting myself out there with the risk of being criticized, talked about or judged… just before signing on I gave myself a little speech in my mind and thought to myself – ‘People WILL criticize you… some people won’t like you, some people will like you and still criticize you. But in the end, you should always be your authentic self and risk it…’ It is your choice to take it to heart or let it roll off your back.” Jodie overcame her fear, which she explains most, if not all, Miss Gibraltar contestants go through, and persevered. Her favourite quote is “love yourself first”, which reflects well her philosophies on life:

“I truly believe that life is an echo, what you send out comes back. I am a very spiritual person and I always try to see the positive in every situation. I believe that what you set your mind to, you can achieve. I see the mistakes and hard times as blessings, because they have shaped me into the person I am

I cannot wait to travel to Asia, see the beautiful Island of Sanya, China, and meet all the other contestants. It’s going to be my first time travelling alone… I believe that this experience will definitely make me become even more independent.” Jodie told us that she is also extremely pleased that her partner and family will be watching her live in Sanya for the final. Skills such as confidence building, public speaking and styling.” She also has some advice for anyone out there who is considering joining a beauty pageant such as Miss Gibraltar: “I would definitely recommend an-

yone thinking of entering to take the plunge – Miss Gibraltar helps you grow as a person and teaches you skills. Apart from being an amazing experience and lots of fun you also get the chance to make new friends and meet many people along the way – I have lots of memories that I will cherish forever.” Now that Jodie has been crowned, her journey is only just beginning. She will go on to be an ambassador for Gibraltar, and will be entering the internationally renowned Miss World 2017 in November, watched by millions of people around the globe, which will be taking place in China.

Good luck Jodie and congratulations to all the 2017 contestants!

he last fortnight of July 2017 saw the 37th annual San Roque conferences, run by the University of Cádiz. As ever, the conferences touched on a wide variety of topics. These ranged from a ground breaking series on the legendary lost continent of Atlantis to lectures on the use of humour as a weapon of domination. The courses and seminars are promoted by the Office of the Mayor of San Roque. On this occasion, as has now become the custom, Mayor Juan Carlos Ruiz Boix took an active part. In recent times, the University’s faculty of International Law and International Relations which is a European “Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence” has provided sterling leadership in developing cross-frontier ties with Gibraltar, focusing on issues of mu-

tual interest to citizens of the region. The head of the faculty, Professor Alejandro del Valle has, among many others things, been instrumental in developing the concept of European Groupings of Territorial Cooperation, which has now been taken up very actively by the Cross-Frontier Group, composed of trades unions and chambers of commerce. The practical results of this initiative should shortly be seen in a re-

gion, the Campo de Gibraltar, which has massive untapped potential. As in other years, there were several guest speakers, including Dr Carlos Jiménez Piernas of the University of Alcalá and Dr Jamie Trinidad, a Gibraltarian professor of International Law at the University of Cambridge. All provided up to the minute and interesting perspectives on the issue of concern of our time,

“Gibraltar and the Campo de Gibraltar”, which was the overarching title to the three day series. Aside from providing top academic and practical information, the seminars have become a venue for meetings between leading politicians in Gibraltar and Andalucía. Chief Minister Fabian Picardo and Mayor Ruiz Boix attended on no less than two days. For the second time, one of the sessions took place in the Europa Point Campus of the University of Gibraltar and was attended by some 100 delegates from Spain, Morocco and Gibraltar. Professor del Valle was assisted in the organization by the renowned Spanish jurist, Professor Jesús Verdú and Gibraltarian barrister and Professor of International Law, Charles Gomez.

Gibraltar Men’s Hockey Team Takes Top Place in the EuroHockey Championship IV

Gibraltar National Men’s Hockey Team

T

he Gibraltar National Men’s Hockey Team has taken the top place in the EuroHockey Championship IV, which were held in Lipovci, Slovenia. The competition which takes place every two years saw the matches play over 5 days between the 31st July and the 4th August. League IV also included the national teams from Hungary, Finland, Slovenia, and Cyprus, with each team playing once against each other. Gibraltar who normally play in league III, and have also played in leagues I and II, were relegated at the last league tournament after being unable to take part. Gibraltar’s first match was against the hosts Slovenia and the Gibraltarians comfortably came out on top winning 7-2. That win was followed by another similarly high scoring win against Finland, winning 8-1. By the end of the second match, Gibraltar were firmly in top position and never relinquished their hold on their push for promotion. The next match was against Hungary and this proved to be the hardest match up of the tournament for the Gibraltarians where they eventually triumphed 5-2, in what was a hard fought match. This triumph all but confirmed Gibraltar’s first place and promotion to

division III, with the Slovenian’s needing to beat their next opponents, Hungary, by more than 14 goals or for Gibraltar to lose their last match by a similar score. Gibraltar’s last game was against Cyprus, where we came out 12-0 winners, with Slovenia coming second after beating Hungary 3-1. In all the squad faced tough opposition with the match against Hungary biggest challenge of the event. The squad utilised their recovery time by ensuring they relaxed, rested and had any muscular pains dealt with. Local player, Ian Rodriguez was recognised as the best player of the competition and was also joint top goal scorer with local Julian Lopez both scoring 6. Unsurprisingly and due to the high scoring matches, Gibraltar had 7 of their players in the top 10 of the goal scorers table with Carl Ramagge (4), Kayron Stagno (4), Gabriel Benatar (3), Giles Carisola (3) and Karl Lima (3). These players ensured that Gibraltar scored 32 goals, outscoring the other nations with second place Slovenia managing 14.

achieved, and in the manner we have achieved it. All 18 players deserve full credit for what has been a fantastic tournament”. Team captain and Gibraltar Hockey’s President praised his team for their hard efforts, commitment, determination and spirit throughout the championships. Carl Ramagge confirmed that: “This is a result of a project started a year ago, we have attended training camps in Loughborough, England and Portugal. Our aim is to do well in league III and to challenge for another promotion. We have come up with a two year plan to ready us for the next competition and come September we will be resuming training and our hard work.”

Head Coach, Christian Zammit, said that they prepared well for the event, with the hard work paying off. He added “I am proud of what we have

eggae star’s latest hit celebrates the Rock which inspired his

“You have to be strong, like the Rock of Gibraltar”, his mother’s oft-repeated words did not make a lot of sense to the boy whom we know today, as the English reggae vocalist Maxi Priest, and whose latest song has put the Rock on popular music’s map.. Young Max Elliot neither knew where the Rock was, nor what it represented, but his Jamaican parent’s mantra was a steadying reassurance as young Max Elliot coped with the difficulties of growing up in a tough London suburb, ‘As a kid, we would hold on to that saying, even though we didn’t know the full story of it, it just made sense.” Maxi admits that as a young Jamaican whose family had immigrated to the UK in the early 1950s he always felt an outsider/ Only his family and his Caribbean link to reggae gave him the sense of belonging and identity which his mother’s mantra encouraged. And, as the second youngest of nine children. the reassuring phrase not only knit the family together but helped strengthen that bond when their father died while Maxi was still young. And the Rock’s strength was an image that stayed in his mind as his passion for music developed and he moved from singing in the local church choir towards a professional career, acclaim as “one of the most successful reggae fusion acts of all-time” and Grammy nominations.

“Music was my refuge,’ he says. “If I got beaten by my father, I’d run underneath the bed and just sing by myself; sing away my sorrows.” In an interview with ‘On Stage TV’ two years ago, Maxi interview recalled that he had to share one bed with two of his siblings. “Once my father died, then this ‘fast thing’ (growing up) became really fast because the bills were coming in. Somebody had to take care of the situation. I had to be working on a building site very early.” But even here musical passion and the image of the persevering Rock stayed lingered. And it paid off. His first hit was his cover of Cat Steven’s ‘Wild World’ in 1988 which firmly established Maxi as one of the top British reggae singers. Since then, he has been one of only two British reggae acts to score an American Billboard No1 with his ‘Close to You’ in 1990. In 1991 his “Set the Night to Music” hit the American Top Ten, and then his duet with Shaggy “That Girl” reached the top 20 of the American charts. He eventually visited Gibraltar to perform here for the first time. “Coming here and feeling the vibe when we did the concert here, the energy, the love and all that. Walking down Main Street and people coming up and just saying ‘hi’ […] telling me about when the border was closed and they would drive around and play my music.”

He has developed a strong affinity to Gibraltar; and reckons that performing here has been one of the highlights of his career. “There have been so many places, but this is one that will stay with me for a long time,” he told an interviewer at the time. And this affection for the Rock has been channelled into his latest song “Solid as the Rock of Gibraltar”. Released by VisitGibraltar.gi on the 3rd of August, in a matter of days, the song has been viewed (listened to on the web?) 138,000+ times and the count is still rising. Enthusiastic comments from locals and visitors followed. One tourist commented “I love this. It shows all the reasons why I absolutely loved my visit to Gibraltar”.Another wrote: “I lived here for three years. It has changed a bit since I was there but still very beautiful, and the people are so friendly. Thank you, Gibraltar,

for being a part of my life and letting me share your life, albeit for only three years.” And Gibraltar’s Tourism Minister, Gilbert Licudi, said: “It is encouraging to see an artist like Maxi Priest having such an affinity to Gibraltar and seeing him produce a song for us. The video shows much of what is this unique destination has to offer.” “Heavenly place, Where the sun shines bright, And the people say hi, with a smile on their face, no lie Gibraltar, Gibraltar in the sun, Rock of Gibraltar, a love for everyone” In the music video, produced by Wright Tech Media in cooperation with the Gibraltar Tourist Board, Maxi is seen in different iconic locations of the Rock -doing what he does best, performing with passion. You can find the music video at www.visitgibraltar.gi or check out their Facebook page. Through his latest feel-good release, Maxi Priest has etched his name into the limestone Rock and into the hearts of the 30,000 of us who call it home.

Glacis United FC - One to Watch

U

nder Manuel Jimenez Perez, Glacis finished fourth last season in the Gibraltar Premier Division, one place off qualifying for the Europa League after finishing seventh and sixth in the previous two seasons. As one of Gibraltar’s oldest teams, Glacis have had to fight hard to re-establish themselves at the top of the Gibraltar football scene, and the 17-time league champions have a built a team around a strong core of Spanish players, much like champions Europa, in order to achieve this. Despite this, Jimenez Perez left the club at the end of the season and was replaced by Mariano Marcos Garcia in July, a Spanish coach with experience playing for teams such as Valladolid and Levante. Alongside him, they have appointed Juan Andres Montedeoca Espinosa as Assistant, as well as Fernando Jesus Moreno Moreno as a Team Analyst, with the trio expected to help Glacis crack the top three of Europa, Lincoln and St Josephs. Key to cracking the top three would be keeping Salvador Carrasco, with the midfielder making the Football Gibraltar team of the season after an impressive campaign for Glacis. With the new management team expected to reshape the team to their preference before the season starts, it remains to be seen how many of last season’s regu-

lars maintain their spots for the upcoming season, and whether the new additions improve or disrupt an improving team on the field. A top three finish should be the aim for the club, which would see them qualify for Europe for the first time. Defensively Glacis were very strong, only letting in 34 goals which was a much better improvement than last season’s 67. They have the defensive partnership of Francisco Cano & Daniel Guerrero Heredia to thank, the Spanish duo shone throughout the season with Cano earning himself nominations in the Defender of the Season & Player of the Season awards which took place last week. Glacis have been working hard already, bringing in a total of seven players. Kaylan Rumbo, Justin Rovegno, Ashley Perez & Paul Podesta with bring some Premier experience while Jared Buhagiar and Carl Thomas renewed their contracts after signing for the Clarets last January. The club have also looked to strengthen their youth teams with five players joining in the last few weeks. Mariano Marcos Garcia has a very tough job on his hands as he tries to do one better than his predeccsor and take Glacis into Europe next season.

With more signings expected to be announced in the next few weeks, we could be looking at another side who will be battling for a top 3 finish with Europa, Lincoln, St Joseph’s and Gibraltar United who have been bought by Real Madrid legend Michel Salgado.

Late News

With the start of the season just over two months away, Garcia will be hoping to bring in all his players as soon as possible so they can prepare for a very busy season ahead.

The money was collected in local Catholic Churches, St Mary the Crowned Cathedral, Sacred Heart, St. Joseph’s, St. Theresa’s, St. Bernard’s, Our Lady of Sorrows, St. Paul’s and the Shrine of the Lady of Europe. In Gibraltar to collect the cheque Mr. Neville Kyrke-Smith the National Director of the ACN thanked the local church for its generous contribution which he said would be applied to the Christian community in Aleppo which has suffered the brunt of the Syrian civil war.

Bishop Zammitt thanked the congregations of the various churches in the diocese for what he said was an enormous contribution given that the money was only collected during masses and from collection boxes and that Gibraltar’s population is only 30,000.

MTV Gibraltar Calling Set to be Gibraltar’s BIGGEST

Festival This Year I

f the summer started with a flurry of announcements of new planets and stars found by NASA it ends in Gibraltar with a veritable constellation of stars descending on the Rock for the MTV Gibraltar Calling Music Festival. This year’s acts include R&B and Garage singer, songwriter and producer Craig David, Rock band Bastille, Pop group Clean Bandit, Latin supernova Ricky Martin, and 1980’s sensation Bananarama… and many, many more. If the Perseid meteorite shower of last week disappointed many there is no risk of a repetition on the 2nd and 3rd September in Gibraltar. The Gibraltar Music Festival (“GMF”) which started in 2012 and which has, year on year, expanded exponentially keeps on attracting the best acts. The first ever GMF was headlined by Jessie Jay of “Price Tag” fame (“caching caching” - which has more than half a billion views on YouTube). Also performing were Reggae legends UB40 and all supported by several top local Gibraltarian acts. More than 9,000 fans filled the Victoria Stadium named after the Queen on whose empire the Sun never set. The GMF powered on and in 2013 Olly Murs (“Troublemaker”) and Emeli Sande (“Read all about it” “Clown”) led a list of acts which included alternative Rock group Texas, pop Rock band Lawson, Spanish superstars La Oreja de

Van Gogh and local musician extraordinaire Guy Valarino. 2014 and 2015 did not see the expected return of Planet X which so worries many but saw the GMF increase in size and momentum, this time with massive acts like the Script (“Hall of Fame”), Clean Bandit (“Symphony”) , Kings of Leon (“Sex of Fire”), Kaiser Chiefs (“I predict a riot”), Estopa (“Me Quedaré”) and Rita Ora (“Your Song”). A zip line and other novelties were added in the 2015 edition. In all, three stages allowed for the congregated masses a choice of the planet’s best music for every age and taste. The 2016 festival again beat all previous records. Last year’s GMF was the largest ever and included 80 acts over two days with healdiners Ne-Yo and Stereophonics wowing the crowds. Other famous acts like KT Tunstall, Jess Glynne, Travis, Rosario and Zara Larsson. More than 12,000 people attended. This year, has seen the Government of Gibraltar partner up with US and international satellite channel MTV for a high octane edition called MTV Gibraltar Calling 2017 music festival and MTV are, as usual reaching for the stars and supremely confident: “With its sunny climate and stunning views, Gibraltar is a fantastic location for an outdoor live music event and we’re really looking forward to working with the Government of Gibraltar to showca-

se what Gibraltar has to offer to our youth audience,” so said Mark Swift, Senior Vice President, Commercial & International Ad Sales, VIMN UK. “We’re confident that with the power of the MTV brand name behind it and the support we’ll provide, MTV presents Gibraltar Calling will be the biggest and best festival in Gibraltar to date.” The Chief Minister of Gibraltar, the Honourable Fabian Picardo (who has previously been filmed bopping and rocking to the music at the Stadium) said: “The huge success of the music festival has now allowed us

to go global with the Gibraltar branding associated with this fantastic event. As a result we have been able to agree a partnership with a global household brand like MTV in a way that will enable us to promote Gibraltar internationally in an unprecedented manner at this crucial time in our history.” This is an exciting development that is great news for music fans in Gibraltar and great for the jurisdiction as a whole. MTV is an iconic leader in its field and we are very proud indeed to call them partners in the international growth of the GMF.” The countdown has started.
