They all, however, welcome you as a client or customer. In this, one of the reddest of red states, one cannot assume that to always be the case. Utah’s Gay Community According to a recent survey, Utah has bounded in “the gayest state” ranking from 38 to 14 and this year, The Advocate Magazine ranked Salt Lake City as the “Gayest City” in the U.S., even if it raised some hackles.

More than 3 percent of Utah’s population is openly gay or lesbian. Salt Lake City proper, however, is more than 7.6 percent openly gay or lesbian. Of course, we know these numbers are low, since not all gays and lesbians feel comfortable telling a pollster of their sexuality. The numbers do show, however, how concentrated our community is in Salt Lake City. While gay and lesbian people live throughout the valley (in fact, it is surprising how many gay couples are living in the heavily-Mormon suburbs of Salt Lake City), much of the gay population is clustered in four areas of the city: Capitol Hill/Avenues, Liberty Park/9th and 9th, Sugar

House and an interesting “ghetto” of lesbians in South Salt Lake. Nowhere in the state is the concentration of gay people larger than the West Capitol Hill area, also known as The Marmalade. Many gay and lesbian people are remodeling homes, buying new condominiums and renting in gay-friendly apartment complexes. It doesn’t hurt that the gay center and coffee shop, and an upscale gay bar are here.

Visitors looking for the gay commercial area may be a bit disappointed to find that gay businesses are strewn throughout the city, rather than concentrated on a single street. Areas to try, though, are the 9th & 9th business district (at the intersection of 900 South and 900 East) the 15th & 15th business district (at the intersection of 1500 South and 1500 East), Sugar House and the upscale stores at The Gateway and City Creek Center. Arts Utah has long been home to a thriving and diverse arts scene. Whether you’re looking to spend an afternoon in a gallery or a night grooving to a local band, you’ll be sure to find something you like.

Galleries From oils to watercolors and past masters to contemporary masterpieces, Utah’s galleries contain enough offerings to satisfy any taste. At the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art, housed in the Salt Palace Convention Center downtown, you will find traveling exhibits as well as more permanent galleries featuring local artists. The gallery known as A Gallery hosts paintings and sculpture by emerging and mid-career artists including abstracts and landscapes as well as figurines. Thankfully, The Mormon Tabernacle Choir doesn’t have a monopoly on music in Utah. Downtown Salt Lake City is home to the Utah Symphony, which performs and hosts several concerts each year. Opera lovers will want to check out Salt Lake Citybased Utah Opera’s season of classic and contemporary works and Utah Festival Opera’s summer offerings of opera and musicals in Logan’s Ellen Eccles Theatre (Cache County). Billed as “Utah’s Other Choir,” the openly gay Salt Lake Men’s Choir presents four concerts annually in Salt Lake City and one in St. George, Utah. Many summer outdoor concert series are held throughout the summer.

Theatre Broadway isn’t the only place you can see a Broadway show anymore. Theatres like downtown Salt Lake’s Capitol Theatre and the University of Utah’s Kingsbury Hall regularly

Equality Utah seeks to achieve political equality for Utah’s gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender citizens and their families. In the past, they have sponsored campaigns against anti-gay legislation including Utah’s Amendment 3 in 2004, which amended Utah’s constitution to ban same-sex marriage. They are currently working on nondiscrimination ordinances in cities across the state, modeled after a successful model passed in Salt Lake City and more than a dozen other Utah municipalities.

Spiritual/Religious For gays and lesbians with a Mormon (Latter-day Saint) background, the organization Affirmation offers fellowship and support; similarly, Reconciliation offers social activities and Sunday firesides for gay and lesbian Mormons seeking spirituality. Family Fellowship is an association that seeks to strengthen families with gay or lesbian members. Integrity Utah is the local Episcopal diocese’s outreach for queer Episcopalians. Health & HIV For 25 years both the People With AIDS Coalition of Utah and the Utah AIDS Foundation have been providing assistance for those living with HIV and AIDS. UAF, the Utah Pride Center and the Salt Lake Valley Health Department have free and low-cost HIV testing services.

Social The Utah Pride Center offers a variety of health and wellness, social, education and advocacy programs for adults and youth in the queer community. These include DiverseCity Writing Group, a film discussion

series, a group for older gays and lesbians, an LGBT speakers bureau and a mental health task force.

Sports The Salt Lake Gay Athletic Association is the umbrella group for several gay-friendly sports leagues including flag football, volleyball, softball and basketball teams. The Queer Utah Aquatic Club promotes adult, amateur swimming and water polo and invites members of all orientations and skill levels.

Additionally, the Kanzeon Zen Center offers a meditation group called Reclamation for queer Buddhists and is well-known as a queer-friendly temple.

Annual Events GAY SALT LAKE

From Film Festivals to Pride Located in downtown Salt Lake City, the Utah Pride Center hosts Utah Pride in June, an annual event for the state’s gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community. The University of Utah also hosts a month of film screenings, lectures and discussions about queer history and culture to celebrate National Coming Out Day (October 11). HIV/ AIDS Awareness

Film Festivals Though not a gay and lesbian event per se, the annual Sundance Film Festival, held each January in Park City, often showcases several films with gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender characters and content. The Salt Lake Film Center also hosts an annual queer film festival in June.

For more than 20 years the Utah AIDS Foundation has held its annual Walk for Life each September to raise money and awareness for people affected by HIV/AIDS in Utah. Walkers are encouraged to bring friends, family and even pets for the 10K walk around downtown Salt Lake City and corporate teams

also participate. In cooperation with the UAF, Hotel Monaco (owned by the very gay-friendly Kimpton Hotel Group) also sponsors the Red Party, a fundraiser for the UAF. The hotel’s lobby is decorated in red and themed food and beverages are served. Guests come dressed in red to commemorate World AIDS Day.
