contributors  Chris Azzopardi, Lynn Beltran,

There are several hospitality spaces run by companies each year up and down Main Street. Most give away free food and drinks. Some require Sundance credentials, but most don’t.

Queer Lounge At press time, only whispers of a possible Queer Lounge were available. It is highly unlikely that the lounge will happen this year. Sad, but it was a great run while it lasted.

A gay guide to Park City By Andrew Collins hip, gay-friendly and heavily devel-

A

oped ski community 30 miles southeast of Salt Lake, the handsome town of Park City attracts the same Range Roverdriving counter-culturalists as Aspen, Colo., but it’s considerably more laid back and friendly. In 1993, after many lesbians and gays boycotted Colorado because of its anti-gay rights initiatives, Park City lured some of the queer market by holding a gay ski week. The charming, historic mining town remains a popular getaway for ski and outdoors aficionados, as well as movie buffs who visit each January for the prestigious Sundance Film Festival. Any time of year, however, Park City offers plenty to keep you busy. You may stroll along historic Main Street (and the newer, lower Main Street), which contains dozens of upscale restaurants, galleries and boutiques. At the foot of Main Street, a gondola takes skiers (or sightseers) up the hill above town. As a primary winter-sports venue during the 2002 Winter Olympics, Park City saw unprecedented exposure — and growth — during the months leading up to the games. Park City locals maintain a love-hate relationship with the legions of celeb-watchers, film fanatics, and black-clad scenesters who invade the town during Sundance. The crowds can be extremely intense. On the other hand, there’s virtually no time of year with a greater gay and lesbian presence. Another advantage to visiting Park City during Sundance is that lift lines at the breathtaking ski areas are relatively short, as many visitors spend their days watching movies. You may attend movies at Sundance either by purchasing single move tickets or purchasing a pass, which admits you to numerous films. Go

to sundance.org for more information. You may also attend screenings at Slamdance, a smaller festival that promotes burgeoning filmmakers. Jan. 4-8, Park City hosts a relatively modest but fun Utah Gay & Lesbian Ski Week. To register or learn more go to SAGASD.com. This modest but festive event consists of several days of great skiing at Utah’s resorts, plus a handful of lunches, dinners and nightclub outings. Elevation Utah was a huge hit during its debut last year. This year it takes place over President’s Day Weekend, Feb. 23–26, 2012. Whether or not there are festivals in town, winter easily qualifies as Park City’s high season, a time when it’s often necessary to book hotel rooms several weeks ahead, and when prices tend to be high. If you’re there primarily to ski and snowboard, book a room at the posh Canyons Resort, one of the best — and largest — full-service ski properties in the nation, with two outstanding hotels (the luxury Grand Summit Hotel and the upscale, but less pricey, Sundial Lodge). The spa at the Grand Summit offers a full slate of fun and healthy treatments, including soothing mud pedicures and musclerelaxing hot-stone therapy. The Grand Summit is also home to the excellent Cabin restaurant, known for its cioppino (tomato-based fish stew), mesquite-grilled steaks and the rich chocolate fondue dessert. Another commendable downtown option is the Silver Queen, a handsome boutique hotel with 12 spacious one- and two-bedroom suites with kitchens, fireplaces, large-screen TVs with DVD players and high-speed Internet. A larger downtown property, the gay-friendly Treasure Mountain Inn offers a wide range of accommodations, from studios to two-bedroom suites. It’s also the host of the Slamdance film screenings, and it’s home to a hip little

breakfast restaurant called Morning Ray, which is a hit with locals. If you’re looking for a condo rental, consider All Seasons Resorts, which represents eight condo compounds. Park City abounds with great restaurants and bars. 350 Main serves some of the more creative fare in town, including black-peppercrusted venison medallions with blackberry-shiitake jus and cranberry-orange marmalade. Head next door to the Spur Bar & Grill if you want to mingle with locals and nosh on simpler food, such as grilled buffalo bratwurst and smokedturkey quesadillas. Blind Dog Restaurant is a cool little spot with a trendy ambiance and such tasty food as cashew-crusted grouper with charred-tomato vinaigrette. Although the main dining room at Butcher’s Chop House is a bit stuffy, the side bar has a warm and cozy feel. You may order off the main menu (filet mignon, King crab legs) or from a light cafe menu, which still offers sizable portions and delicious food: chicken and papaya quesadillas, chop salad, ahi-tuna spring rolls. Stylish Shabu serves delicious, so-called freestyle Asian cuisine, such as crab cakes and wontons over greens with pickled ginger and ponzu aioli, and sea bass with ginger, chive and a garlic-black bean paste; there’s live acoustic music on Friday evenings.

Chimayo serves creative Southwestern food, including pumpkin-seed-encrusted gulf shrimp stuffed with spinach, and grilled buffalo flank steak with wild mushrooms, corn, and poblanopotato gratin. Wasatch Brewery Pub is fun and has played host to parties during gay ski week. Fill up on baby back ribs or coconut-and-beerbatter shrimp. Park City’s favorite coffeehouse is Wasatch Bagel Cafe, which serves wraps, panini sandwiches, bagels and all sorts of espresso drinks. Although it’s set in a shopping center near the interstate, Loco Lizard Cantina is a slick space with above-average Mexican fare, such as chicken-mole enchiladas, poblano-corn chowder, and fish tacos. It’s a good bet if you’re hungry after scouring the nearby Tangier Outlet Shops, which are right off I-80, for bargains. Also on this side of town, in the Redstone development, is a Whole Foods supermarket, which sells gourmet and healthful prepared foods, sandwiches, soups, salads and the like — it’s great for take-out and indispensable for groceries if you’re staying someplace with kitchen facilities. Redstone also has a number of shops and restaurants, plus a movie theater.  Q

‘Look Again’: The 2012 Sundance Film Festival Guide

Welcome to the full 2012 Sundance Film Festival schedule. As customary, the films presented this year are as unique and revolutionary as the festival’s reputation. Cutting-edge and exploratory (and a lot of robots this year), choosing which films to see can be difficult. We have highlighted, in pink, films with LGBT themes and that may be of interest to community members, as well as those featuring openly LGBT actors, directors and screenwriters, including: Cheyenne Jackson, Anne Heche, John Waters and Megan Mullally. Second only to seeing the films, star-gazing at the Sundance Film Festival is one of the best pastimes to beat the dreary Utah wintertime blues. This year’s film lineup also boasts some A-list celebrities including Bradley Cooper, Zac Efron, Kirsten Dunst, Robert DeNiro, Sigourney Weaver and many more. Follow us as we tweet @QSaltLake for all the latest Sundance info and photos of celebrity spottings. But if you beat us to ’em, tweet us your photos @QSaltLake.

College ‟frenemies” Lauren and Katie move in together after losing a relationship and rent control, respectively. Sharing Katie’s late grandmother’s apartment in New York City, the girls bicker with each other until one fateful night, when Katie’s noisy bedroom activities make Lauren barge in and discover a dirty little secret. This revelation brings them closer together, and Lauren (the brains) and Katie (the talent) concoct a wildly successful business venture. As profits swell, the girls reevaluate their hopes and dreams and realize that just because someone pees in your hair in college doesn’t mean she won’t be your best friend 10 years later. How to Survive a Plague U.S.A. (Director: David France)

Faced with their own mortality, an improbable group of mostly HIVpositive young men and women broke the mold as radical warriors taking on Washington and the medical establishment. How to Survive a Plague is the story of two coalitions — ACT UP and TAG (Treatment Action Group) — whose activism and innovation turned AIDS from a death sentence into a manageable condition. Despite having no scientific training, these self-made activists infiltrated the pharmaceutical industry and helped identify promising new drugs, moving them from experimental trials to patients in record time. With unfettered access to a treasure trove of never-before-seen archival footage from the 1980s and ’90s, filmmaker David France puts the viewer smack in the middle of the controversial actions, the heated meetings, the heartbreaking failures, and the exultant breakthroughs of heroes in the making. Giuseppe Verdi’s enduring masterpiece follows Rigoletto, a duke’s jester, whose insensitive mocking of another man’s anger earns him a curse and an eventual loss of horrific proportions. Rigoletto is both an instigator and a victim and, in the end, it is he who suffers most as a result of the complications that come from a life in service to an awful man, a man who reserves even the opera’s most famous music for himself. United Kingdom (Director: Bart Layton)

It’s 1994: a 13-year-old boy disappears from his home in San Antonio, Texas. Three and a half years later, he is found alive, thousands of miles away, in Spain. Disoriented and quivering with fear, he divulges his shocking story of kidnap and torture. His family is overjoyed to bring him home, but all is not what it seems. Sure, he has the same tattoos, but he looks decidedly different, and he now speaks with a strange accent. Why doesn’t the family seem to notice these glaring inconsistencies? It’s only when an investigator starts asking questions that this astounding true story takes an even stranger turn. PkCty PkCty SLC PkCty PkCty

Don R. Austin, LCSW Try our wild coconut, curried wild rice

By Annalisa Millo

I

had the wonderful opportunity to speak with Utah’s own Geralyn Dreyfous, who founded the Utah Film Center (formerly the Salt Lake Film Center). She has been a producer and executive producer for several films, founded Impact Partners, a company that helps fund independent films that address social issues, and was also an adviser on 8: A Mormon Proposition. Dreyfous was the executive producer of Born Into Brothels, which received an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature in 2004. I asked Dreyfous how our local queer community can experience Sundance this year, and help generate momentum behind the films. “For me, Sundance is an international platform for these stories to get out in the world, and it’s very exciting to have it here in our state. The political repercussions of these films, I think are getting stronger and are also finding new ways to find audiences because of the way that technology is changing. What I’ve noticed about the trend for documentaries this year at Sundance, is they have some very big essay films that are looking at some of the biggest social issues facing our country, which is very exciting,” said Dreyfous. She mentioned that the Sundance House is the Beehive Tea Room, which hosts musical acts every night during the festival, and brings in the filmmakers as sort of a green room while the films are being screened. “There’s a lot happening at the Beehive Tea Room, and most people don’t know that, so that will be a fun place to hang out if people are going to any of the screenings in Salt Lake City,” she said. She also noted that the Salt Lake City Main Library is an official Sundance venue this year, and will be an excellent place for the local residents to attend the film screenings. Some of Dreyfous’ recommendations for Sundance this year are: The Invisible War, directed by Kirby Dick “Kirby Dick’s film, The Invisible War, which I’m executive producing, is going to be an incendiary film that’s going to really blow open the failure of the military to address military sexual assault. It’s so hard hitting, and the issue is huge. There are women in Orem, Utah who have eating disorders, and their rationale for having their disorders is so that they don’t have their periods, so that when they go back to Afghanistan, and when they get raped, they won’t get pregnant. That’s how fucked up it is. They’re such good soldiers and they want to be back in the line of fire, but they also have this extra burden to worry about, it’s just terrible.”

How To Survive a Plague, directed by David France France, a first-time filmmaker had been covering HIV/AIDS issues and medical research for 30 years as a journalist. His film includes important archival footage that Dreyfous says shows how in the early days the LGBT community had to train itself to become medical experts and advocate on behalf of policy in a way that was fair for everybody, and not just the queer community.

Love Free Or Die, directed by Mack Alstin “Love Free Or Die is about an Episcopal bishop who has refused to leave his church, and refused to leave his partner, and that tension that will probably split the Anglican Church around the issue of same-sex marriage. [Alstin] is at the forefront of it, and he’s been doing equality work here in Utah for years, so he’ll be kind of a ‘home team favorite,’ and that’s going to be a really important film.” Keep The Lights On, directed by Ira Sachs “The other one for the LGBT community to watch for is Ira Sachs’ drama called Keep The Lights On, which is autobiographical. His dad lives here, he’s spent a lot of his time growing up out here, and he’s had three or four films at Sundance, and the latest won the Grand Jury Prize. So that’s a film for you and the Q readers, and general audiences too. He’s been very devoted to equality issues here, and I think people will be very happy to have him back at Sundance.” In addition to those, she has recommended Susan Froemke’s film, Escape Fire: The Fight To Rescue American Healthcare, which addresses how to do health care reform; Eugene Jarecki’s film, The House I Live In, which is about the failure of the drug war and drug policy; and Finding North, a film that looks at hunger issues in America. In terms of feature films, Dreyfous recommends the closing night film, The Words, and The Law In These Parts — a film on the Israeli Palestinian conflict, how that separation has happened historically, and what the legal precedent is for forward progress. As for crowd-pleasing films, the inside prediction is that Searching For Sugarman will win the Audience Award in Documentary, a story about a man here in Utah who was once a protest singer and rock musician in the 1970s who ended up being a janitor. But unbeknownst to him and his family, he has a cult following in South Africa because of his protest songs, and some younger people try to track him down.  Q

the dating diet Love in a hopeless place

)

I

By Anthony Paull

t’s a whirlwind growing up. I can’t get the hang of it. I’m on tour with a new book, but I don’t know how I got here. I say aloud, I have to earn my stripes. But am I ready for scars too? At my first venue, a smoky gay bar, my face is on a poster above a dirty toilet and nobody knows who I am. I read from a Kindle but they’d rather see me disrobe. Pointing to the stripper pole a few patrons cackle. I try to be polite but I lose it, telling the crowd to download the book on its butthole. That way, they can get a super hot STD too. “Think of it as a free bonus,” I sing. “Herpes! It’s the gift that keeps giving!” Following my performance, my assistant says that mentioning herpes might be a weak selling technique. Also, I need to stop telling gay men that it hurts taking it up the butt. Apparently, they don’t want me to ruin what awaits them at ethe end of the night. “Focus on the book,” he -says. “Just read. You don’t want to insult them.” t “But they’re not listening!” I cry. “And I have a @week of this? I don’t know if I can do it.” On the drive to Ft. Lauderdale I’m convinced that I’m a closeted masochist. The pain gets me off. Why else would I agree to go on a bar tour with a young adult book? “Because gay people need to hear it,” my assistant insists. “Your book reminds people about what it means to love.” He casts me an assuring wink. “Besides, your friends will be at the next stop.” Yes, I forgot. My friends are waiting to support me. Yes! Well, except for Juan who decides to break up with his boyfriend an hour before I arrive. His pickup truck is packed with boxes when we meet. “Sorry. I can’t stay,” he says. Sweat falls along his tan forehead. “I’m headed to Miami to party.” “You’re kidding. You just ended a three-year relationship and you’re going to party?” “It’s what I do,” he says, matter-of-factly. Upset, I take his phone from him to call his boyfriend. He huffs as his boyfriend answers the phone. “Can you two not do this the one night I’m in town?” I ask.

“Do whaaaaaat?” his boyfriend replies. His lavender voice soothes my ear as if nothing’s wrong. “Please,” I beg. “Just stop the drama and get over here so Juan will stay for the reading.” He sighs, hesitating. “Fine. I’ll get my purse.” “What? He’s coming?” Juan yells, as I hang up the phone. Immediately, he’s in need of a drink. So we find a bar next to the coffee shop where I’m reading and the owner gives us free shots in celebration of my new book. I shouldn’t be drinking but I am. I’m on my fifth shot when I find myself counseling Juan on how to work on the issue with his boyfriend: Listen to what he has to say. He loves you. Fighting is normal. Enjoy it. I have a heap of advice but I can’t heed my own words. The question is what am I fighting for? I don’t know what I’m doing here. True, I put myself on this tour, but I had an idea that someone would pay attention. Now, it’s wearing on me. The laughing, the heckling, the snarky statements flying at me each time I pull out my Kindle — I soak up every wound as the crowd wonders aloud about why I’m reading to them. I have something to say. Yes, that why I’m here. Because I’m not happy with the status quo, the hiding, and the men who think they’re ‘less’ gay because they’re masculine. I’m over the obsessive gays, the ones fighting for the mirror at the gym. There’s more to being gay than sex and the latest hot guy on Grindr. I like to think that. But when I was young, I couldn’t find a book that agreed. I had no training wheels. It was zero to 100 before I hit 30. Does that make me emotionally stunted? Is that why I can’t understand how it’s acceptable to send a nude pic to a stranger but be afraid to say a public hello? Why are you scared? Why am I equally afraid? Where is Juan? Why did he leave before the reading? Where are the rest of my friends? For me, it doesn’t add up, feeling so alone. I suppose that’s why I write ... because nothing is adding up. It’s just the mic and me, just one voice talking about love. You can laugh, yes. But I’m Anthony Paull and I can talk over it.  Q

nearby magazine shop so that I could procure some “inspirational literature” of my own. I proceeded to buy a “triple combination” consisting of The Book of More-Man: Another Testament of Vice (Raging Stallion), The Doctrine of Covetousness (Rump Riders) and the Pervert of Great Vice (Butt Pirates of the Caribbean). I drove to Memory Grove for some personal “scripture study.” I sat alone in my car, quietly pondering the things I had read. I decided that I would skip dinner in order to “fastly prey” for a companion to play “scripture chase.” Lo and behold, I observed that many men were wandering aimlessly about, to and fro along the path, apparently engaging in “Man’s Search For Happiness.” And it came to pass, that I also joined the throng, gaining many a stare, for I was still wearing the tuxedo. Sticking to the straight and narrow path and taking great care so as not to soil the tux, I did gain favor with a gorgeous jogger wearing tight little short-shorts who was way out of my league in splendor. Apparently, a tuxedo can make even a plus-size, geriatric queen look enticing. He silently motioned with a subtle nod of his head for me to join him behind some trees. Reverently and quietly I joined him in the privacy of this “sacred grove” and with breathless trepidation, I proceeded to “hold his priesthood.” Sensing my fashion limitations, he took charge and kneeled before me. Using my cummerbund as a cradle for my urim and thummim, he quickly went to work administering his affections. For some strange reason, the old British saying came to mind: “Nothing sucks like Electrolux.” I softly began to sing the song by Ian from Latter-Day Lampoon; “Hold to my rod, my iron rod, `Tis stiff, and straight and true.

Fearing there would not be a place to change clothes, I wore my tuxedo from Logan to the dress rehearsal at noon. In great awe, I entered the tabernacle and sat in the choir seats beneath its massive organ. I almost swooned from lust when the director placed me between two absolutely hunky returned missionaries from the university. For lack of room, they were forced to stand shoulder to shoulder with me and read off of my music. I held the music folder, and as they would reach in and turn each page, they would brush up against my arms and shoulders causing me to “gain a testimony.” We were packed tight enough that our thighs were even rubbing against each other. I could definitely feel the “power of the priesthood.” By the end of rehearsal, I was near to “exceeding myself” and needed to bear my testimony. We had a four-hour break before we had to line up for the concert in the evening. The clueless brethren tripped off happily to get dinner, totally unaware that they had kindled an unquenchable fire in my burning bosom. I removed myself from the other choir members and avoided the missionaries quoting scriptures on Temple Square. I went to the

The tale of hold to the rod he road to the Mormon Tabernacle is fraught with danger and excitement. This may come as a shock to most of you, but when I am not engaged in the fondling of bingo balls at Third Friday Bingo with Ruby Ridge and the Matrons of Mayhem, I sing with the Salt Lake Men’s Choir. We just finished performing our 29th annual Christmas concert. Dressing up in a tuxedo and singing my heart out brings back some fond memories of my younger days during the Paleolithic Era, when I used to be a member of a concert choir in Logan. That choir was scheduled to perform the Brahms Requiem in the Mormon Tabernacle on Temple Square. I was so excited because, as everyone knows, the concert ain’t over until a fat lady sings. So, in preparation, I bedazzled my best hoop skirt with sparkles, shellacked my tallest beehive hairdo and donned my glitter shoes. Sadly, I was informed that I must wear a tuxedo inside the tabernacle, because my beehive hairdo would outshine the beehives carved by the pioneers into the woodwork of the building, thus causing someone’s testimony to waver.

My iron rod is a gift from God To place inside of you.” And so it was accomplished, after a frenzied time, that his tonsils were baptized with “the fruit of my loins,” and he did swallow, lest the “seed” be spilled upon the ground and 4 wasted. With a newly found love of life, and an obvious spring in my step, I raced back to the tabernacle, with my “triple combination” secretly stowed inside my music bag, arriving barely in time. I was nervous that the ushers would notice the literature in my bag. As we Y stood in line in the basement, waiting to enter the choir seats, my missionary studs asked me where I had disappeared. I told them I had gone to a quiet place for some personal study and self improvement. They seemed to buy that. Just as we started walking upstairs, the stud behind me, with a bewildered look upon his face, reached up and picked a twig and leaf out of my hair. Luckily, there was no time left for further inquiry. I sang like I had never sung before. It was surely my best concert performance ever. Like always these events leave us with several eternal questions: 1. Should I name my beehive hairdo ‘Deseret?’ 2. Do they make tuxedos with knee pads? 3. Do they make tuxedos out of camouflage material? 4. Does the jogger need to present his temple recommend to me before his tonsils get baptized? 5. Do they make music folders with secret porn compartments? These and other important questions to be answered in future chapters of: The Perils of Petunia Pap Smear.  Q
