OFT FILM CARD April marks the beginning of spring proper, a period of growth and reawakening after the slumber of winter. With the days growing longer (thank goodness), it seems as if we too come out of hibernation with renewed energy and ideas. It’s the ideal time for creativity and making plans. April’s programme demonstrates the many facets of creativity that cinema provides, from the delicate, hand-drawn beauty of Studio Ghibli animation, The Tale of the Princess Kaguya, to the fierce futuristic visions of Blade Runner: The Final Cut and the eagerly anticipated Kurt Cobain documentary, Cobain: Montage of Heck, providing an insight into the iconic musician who inspired a generation of artists.

VISIT THE JAMESON BAR AT QFT
April also marks the return of the Belfast Film Festival, taking up residence in QFT for what is one of our favourite weeks of the year. If the time for foreign holidays still seems a long way off we invite you to take a journey with us as we pick out some of our festival favourites from across the globe: metaphysical murder mystery, Li’l Quinquin (France), The Daily Show host Jon Stewart’s directorial debut starring Gael García Bernal, Rosewater (USA), or dark new film noir, Magical Girl (Spain). In our main programme we’ll also be swinging by Argentina for the wickedly funny Wild Tales, heading to Denmark for emotionally-charged drama, A Second Chance and taking a peak into the fashion houses of Paris in documentary, Dior and I. As spring is a great time for new beginnings, we’re very excited to announce a new partnership with Omniplex Cinemas - Project Monday. We’ve always prided ourselves in bringing the very best in new and classic independent cinema to our audiences, and we’re delighted we can now bring the best of the QFT programme to Omniplex audiences across Northern Ireland one Monday every month. First up is Ida, an absolute beauty of a film and well-deserved winner of Best Foreign Language Film at the 2015 Oscars. Enjoy all that spring has to offer, and we’ll see you at QFT (or a cinema near you!) this April. Susan Picken, Head of QFT

RELATOS SALVAJES
WILD TALES FRI 27 MAR – THURS 9 APR & MON 27 APR
DIR: DAMIÁN SZIFRON • ARGENTINA/ SPAIN • 2014 • 2 HRS 2 MINS • SUBTITLED
Absolutely hilarious, and at times wickedly shocking, this Oscar-nominated collection of six stand-alone stories is united by the common theme of vengeance. Produced by Pedro Almodóvar (whose own wicked sense of humour is very much in evidence), Wild Tales neatly skewers country of origin Argentina’s political corruption and bourgeois complacency with a variety of scenarios featuring road-rage drivers, shady lawyers, corrupt politicians, wronged brides and cheating husbands – all are fair game in this delirious black comedy. Beginning with a gloriously clever and funny prelude, Wild Tales fuses sharp satire with a contemporary energy to create a series of stories that take mundane real life encounters and push them to their furthest extremes. Featuring some of the biggest names in Argentine cinema (notably Ricardo Darín as a demolition expert who becomes a criminal celebrity) and a funky Latin score by Gustavo Santaolalla, Wild Tales is a blast from start to finish (and has some of the best credits we have ever seen). Wild Tales is also screening on Mon 27 Apr at 6.30pm, showing simultaneously at QFT and selected Omniplex Cinemas as part of Project Monday (see page 13).

A LITTLE CHAOS
FRI 24 – THURS 30 APR DIR: ALAN RICKMAN • UK • 2014 • 1 HR 56 MINS
CERT TBC
It has been far too long since Alan Rickman directed a film but right-royal romp A Little Chaos has been worth the wait.
A Little Chaos is a witty, biting historical comedy with deliciously funny performances from Rickman and Stanley Tucci.
Rickman stars as King Louis XIV, a monarch with a penchant for the lavish statement. He commissions architect André Le Nôtre (Matthias Schoenaerts – see Suite Française) to design lavish gardens for the Palace of Versailles. Sabine de Barra (Kate Winslet), a mere woman, is the surprise choice to make the plans a reality as she steps into a court full of intrigue, backstabbing and many who would love to see her fail.
“Kate Winslet blooms in a film full of heaving bosoms, flouncing dandies and landscape gardening.” - TIM ROBEY, DAILY TELEGRAPH

This beautiful, hand-drawn masterwork was decades in the making, and is another wonderful addition to the Ghibli canon. Introduction by Laura Shearer, film blogger, on Sat 4 Apr, 6pm.

COBAIN: MONTAGE OF HECK FRI 10 – WED 15 APR DIR: BRETT MORGEN • USA • 2015 • 2 HRS 12 MINS
From acclaimed director Brett Morgen, this first ever, fully authorised documentary blends Kurt Cobain’s personal archive of art, written word, music (both his most famous and some that has never been heard), and never-before-seen home movies, with animation and revelatory interviews from his family and closest confidantes. Following Kurt from his earliest years in Aberdeen, WA, through the height of his fame, it creates an intense and powerful cinematic insight into an artist who craved the spotlight even as he rejected the trappings of fame. Those of Kurt’s generation will learn things about him they never knew. Those who’ve discovered the man and his music more recently will understand what makes Kurt the lasting icon that he is. Just like the legendary frontman of Nirvana himself, Cobain: Montage of Heck is authentic, visceral and unflinching. It will get into your head and stay there long after the end credits roll.
Introduction by Marcus Smith, associate tutor, The Open University, on Sun 12 Apr, 8.15pm.

DIR: RIDLEY SCOTT • USA/ HONG KONG/UK • 1982 • 1 HR 57 MINS
Ridley Scott’s Sci-Fi opus is a grand cinematic synthesis of sound, image and thought-provoking drama that demands to be seen on the big screen. Adapted from Philip K. Dick’s novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, Scott’s masterpiece has gripped audiences and inspired passionate and fierce debate. Harrison Ford is exemplary as the world weary detective hunting down intelligent but murderous replicants in a neon-lit, rain-spattered future Los Angeles. Film critic David Thomson called it, “a superb piece of future-making and a film noir that bleeds over into tragedy.” Ten years after its original release, the Director’s Cut of Blade Runner was released in cinemas in 1992. Given complete artistic freedom to make The Final Cut in 2007, the 25th anniversary of the film’s opening, Ridley Scott created this final, definitive version, fully restored from the original negative. Introduction by Robert J. E. Simpson, film historian, on Sun 5 Apr, 3pm. Blade Runner: The Final Cut is also screening on Mon 8 June at 6.30pm, showing simultaneously at QFT and selected Omniplex Cinemas as part of Project Monday (see page 13).

Headstrong and independent, farmer Bathsheba Everdene is among the most modern of 19th-century heroines and Christie’s performance beautifully underlines her as a woman at odds with the conventions of the time.

Mise Éire is a feature length documentary chronicling events in Ireland leading up to, during, and immediately after the 1916 Easter Rising, extensively using original newsreel footage from the time. The film was both the first Irish feature-length film that utilised an orchestral soundtrack and the first complete Irish language film. From its original release in 1960 the film has been hailed a masterpiece of Irish cinema.
This documentary chronicles the story of a lifelong struggle for emancipation that began with the battle for Italy’s liberation from Fascism. Laila and her two comrades, Gina ‘Sonia’ Moncigoli and Pierina ‘Iva’ Bonilauri talk about their time in the Resistenza and what it meant to them and many other women. In a predominantly male-dominated Italian society the story is even more compelling by Laila’s rise through the ranks to become one of the few female commanders in the Italian resistance.
