A defiant, passionate young woman struggles against suffocating societal norms in this exceptional British debut starring the incandescent Florence Pugh (The Falling). Rural England, 1865. Katherine (Pugh) is stifled by her loveless marriage to a bitter man twice her age, and his cold, unforgiving family. Lady Macbeth has grand ambitions, and exudes a rare vision and talent.

DIR: JULIA DUCOURNAU FRANCE/BELGIUM • 2016 1 HR 39 MINS • SUBTITLED
A young woman discovers an insatiable appetite for flesh in this playful coming of age body horror tale from debut director Julia Ducournau. When shy vegetarian Justine (Garance Marillier), enrols in veterinary school to follow in the footsteps of her parents and older sister, she is reluctant to join in the sex, drugs and party scene surrounding her. However, when she accidentally tries raw meat, a suppressed hunger in her is awakened. With an abundance of subtext to sink your teeth into, this feminist teen cannibal tale oozes with provocative, youthful exuberance.

THEIR FINEST FRI 21 APR – THURS 4 MAY
DIR: LONE SCHERFIG • 2016 • UK 1 HR 57 MINS
Continuing her fascination with British manners, Danish director Lone Scherfig (An Education) delivers another evocative study of a transitional period in our history. In 1940, a married woman (Gemma Arterton) and a screenwriter (Sam Claflin) develop a growing attraction while working together on a propaganda film about the evacuation of Allied troops from Dunkirk. A beautifully crafted costume drama with terrific performances, Scherfig’s new film is a quietly subversive, funny and finally moving account of a little known story from one of the darkest, most uncertain periods of British history.
THE JOURNEY FRI 5 – THURS 11 MAY
DIR: NICK HAMM • UK • 2016 CERT TBC 1 HR 34 MINS
Timothy Spall (Ian Paisley) and Colm Meaney (Martin McGuinness) star in this dramatisation of the events preceding the historic 2006 St. Andrews Agreement. The Journey is a fictional account of the negotiations between the two political adversaries that transpired, not in some hallowed hall but, rather, in a minivan traversing the Scottish countryside. The charismatic Meaney and Spall embody these two contentious political figures as real live people, with all their tics and foibles – and what’s more, they show us how these mortal enemies came to see each other’s human sides.

MINDHORN FRI 5 – THURS 18 MAY
DIR: SEAN FOLEY • 2016 • UK 1 HR 29 MINS
Washed-up Richard Thorncroft (Julian Barratt) peaked with hit 1980s detective show Mindhorn, playing the titular Isle of Man sleuth with a robotic eye that allowed him to literally “see the truth”. Decades later, when a deranged Manx criminal demands Mindhorn as his nemesis, Thorncroft returns to the scene of his greatest triumphs for one last chance to reignite his glory days and professional credibility. The Mighty Boosh’s Julian Barratt and co-writer Simon Farnaby’s joyously off-the-wall creation follows in the grand tradition of pompous, spectacularly oblivious yet vulnerable British losers, from Alan Partridge to David Brent.
JAWBONE FRI 12 – THURS 18 MAY
DIR: THOMAS NAPPER • 2017 • UK 1 HR 31 MINS
Jimmy McCabe (Johnny Harris) is a man in search of hope but looking in all the wrong places. When he hits rock bottom he turns to his childhood boxing club and the only family he has left: gym owner Bill (Ray Winstone), cornerman Eddie (Michael Smiley) and promoter Joe (Ian McShane). A valuable addition to the boxing genre, this is also a potent and cliché free film about addiction and redemption. Michael Smiley is, as ever, terrific. The score is by Paul Weller and the boxing sequences were choreographed by Barry McGuigan.
ACCESS SCREENING The 8.45pm screening on Tues 16 May will include audio description and on-screen captioning.

COLOSSAL FRI 19 MAY – THURS 1 JUN
DIR: NACHO VIGALONDO • SPAIN/ CANADA • 2016 • 1 HR 49 MINS
Anne Hathaway proves that there’s a giant, city-crushing monster in all of us in Nacho Vigalondo’s genrebending monster movie comedy. Gloria (Hathaway) is an out-ofwork party girl who, after getting kicked out of her apartment by her boyfriend, is forced to leave her life in New York and move back to her hometown. When news reports surface that a giant creature is destroying Seoul, Gloria gradually comes to the realisation that she is somehow connected to this far-off phenomenon. Deconstructing the kaiju genre in wildly imaginative ways, writer-director Vigalondo unleashes a fantastical tale that also triumphs as a wholly original romantic comedy.
ACCESS SCREENING The 8.10pm screening on Tues 30 May will include audio description and on-screen captioning.

THE HIPPOPOTAMUS SUN 28 MAY, 7.30PM
DIR: JOHN JENCKS • UK • 2017 1 HR 29 MINS
Join us for a special Q&A screening of The Hippopotamus with Stephen Fry, cast and filmmakers live by satellite from the Hay Festival. When disgraced theatre critic and poet, Ted Wallace (Roger Allam), is fired from his job, he is asked to investigate the mystery of so-called miracle healings at Swafford Hall. His natural cynicism makes him the ideal candidate to get to the bottom of what’s going on, as well as some good whisky bottles, in this hilarious tale based on Stephen Fry’s seminal novel.

CLASH FRI 5 – WED 10 MAY
DIR: MOHAMED DIAB • EGYPT/FRANCE 2016 • 1 HR 38 MINS • SUBTITLED
Mohamed Diab’s Clash is an unforgettable portrait of Egypt on the brink as rival protestors find themselves locked up in a police van. Set in 2013, after mass protests saw the ruling Muslim Brotherhood thrown out of power by the army, Clash unfolds almost entirely within the claustrophobic confines of a police van as rival demonstrators find themselves caught in impossibly stifling heat. From this simple set-up, Diab weaves a striking story of scale, ambition and pure cinematic verve, pulling off a remarkable feat; a road movie about confinement.
AQUARIUS FRI 12 – MON 15 MAY
DIR: KLEBER MENDONÇA FILHO 2016 • BRAZIL/FRANCE 2 HRS 26 MINS • SUBTITLED
Neighboring Sounds director Kleber Mendonça Filho returns with another intriguing insight into the state of modern Brazil that also provides a magnificent central role for Sônia Braga, so fondly remembered for Kiss of the Spiderwoman. Braga plays Clara, a retired music critic who is the sole resident of an old apartment block. She stubbornly refuses to move despite the blandishments and pressures of real estate developers. As the battle of wills intensifies, the film pits the brutal demands of big business against a view of the world in which places, objects and memories have a price far beyond money.
“You must see Clash, you simply must. The film will break your heart, but enlighten all.” – TOM HANKS

Sorrow draws them together but what does she really know about this mystery man? Largely filmed in gorgeous black and white, this is an impeccably staged tale in which personal tragedies reflect the agonies of a shattered continent struggling to heal the wounds of war.

Watched on by a group of sand crabs, he attempts to escape but is thwarted by the weather and a red turtle with a vendetta. DREDD SAT 6 MAY, 9.30PM
PRESENTED BY BANTERFLIX & COMIC BOOK GUYS
DIR: PETE TRAVIS • UK/USA/INDIA/ SOUTH AFRICA • 2012 • 1 HR 35 MINS
To celebrate Free Comic Book Day and the 40th anniversary of one of British comics’ most iconic creations, BanterFlix and the Comic Book Guys have joined forces with QFT to present a special screening of Dredd. Boasting an ultra-violent screenplay by Alex Garland, Pete Travis’ feature was a much more stripped down, grittier approach to Dredd than its 1995 predecessor and remained true to the ethos of John Wagner’s Dirty Harry-esque creation. Karl Urban gives a fantastic central performance as the grizzled law enforcer with that iconic jaw-line. The screening will include a prize draw for Dredd goodies, including a hand drawn sketch by local artist and 2000 AD stalwart, P.J. Holden.

Welcome to QFT Late: Cult + Classic, a new monthly late night slot presenting forgotten films, maligned movies and stone cold classics. We begin with a 25th anniversary screening of David Lynch’s twisted Twin Peaks prequel. Panned upon release by critics and fans, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me has emerged as one of Lynch’s strongest films. His dreamlike, surreal Americana is in full effect here, burrowing into the darker side of the small town of Twin Peaks, exploring places where the ‘90s primetime TV show couldn’t venture.

MANHATTAN FRI 12 – WED 17 MAY
DIR: WOODY ALLEN • USA • 1979 1 HR 36 MINS
Woody Allen’s rapturous paean to New York features beautiful monochrome cinematography, is funny as hell, and is all wrapped up in the music of Gershwin. By turns a rhapsodic city symphony and an astute character study, Manhattan is a portrait of a modern metropolis and the messy lives of its inhabitants. It’s a love letter from a hometown hero that remains ones of Woody Allen’s most successful explorations of his enduring themes: complex relationships, compromised romances and his own creative processes. Manhattan returns to the big screen in a new 4K digital print scanned from the original camera negative.
