I AM BELFAST FRI 8 – THURS 14 APR

DIR: MARK COUSINS • UK • 2015 1 HR 24 MINS

In this dreamlike evocation of Belfast from director Mark Cousins (The Story of Film: An Odyssey, A Story of Children and Film, Atomic) the city is a 10,000-year-old lady who takes you on an emotional journey through the rich, complex and often tragic history of the place. Cousins’ talent at finding beauty in the mundane and composing painterly pictures of what lies before his eyes are skilfully interspersed with film clips and archive footage. The powerfully evocative soundtrack by Belfast composer David Holmes (Ocean’s Eleven, Hunger, ‘71) mixed with Cousins’ poetical narration give the film its dreamlike quality.

From wandering through the streets, meeting jaunty pensioners Rosie and Maud, to the horrors of the Troubles, I Am Belfast is an impassioned, politically engaged and inventive love letter from Cousins to his hometown. And the striking cinematography by Christopher Doyle (see Hero – page 6) is the cherry on the cake. “A charmingly offbeat tribute to a big-hearted city.” - HOLLYWOOD REPORTER The 6.00pm screening on Sun 10 Apr will be followed by a Q&A with Mark Cousins.

Undoubtedly one of the most loved films ever made, this 1939 classic sees Judy Garland’s Dorothy whisked away from black-and-white Kansas to the wonderful, colourful land of Oz. It doesn’t matter how many times you’ve seen it, it’s still one of the most magical film experiences anyone can have.

This is a rare chance to see this remarkable film – unmissable.

SING STREET FRI 25 – THURS 31 MAR

DIR: JOHN CARNEY • IRELAND/UK/USA 2016 • 1 HR 46 MINS

John Carney’s (Once) fantastic new comedy drama is a beguiling portrait of ‘80s Dublin, complete with the stone washed jeans, wild haircuts and a nostalgia filled soundtrack with hits from The Cure, Duran Duran, The Police, and Genesis. When a middle class family is forced to downsize as part of the 1980s recession, middle child Conor (newcomer Ferdia Walsh-Peelo) has to leave his comfortable private school and move into a tough inner city public school. A loner at school - his parents played by Aidan

Gillen and Maria Doyle Kennedy are close to breaking up - his only friend is his music obsessed elder brother (Jack Reynor). He finds a glimmer of hope in the mysterious, super-cool Raphina (Lucy Boynton) so, with the aim of winning her heart, he invites her to star in his (notional) band’s music videos. When she agrees, Conor must deliver what he has promised; he duly forms a band and the lads pour their hearts into writing lyrics and shooting videos. But they can’t decide if they’re Spandau Ballet, The Cure or Hall & Oates.

Sing Street is a wonderfully authentic and sweet natured tale of how music can save your life. John Carney has mined the memories from his own teenage years, captured the innocence and pain of first love and written some fantastic original songs which will stay in your head for ever. ‘The Riddle of the Model’ is a future classic. Screening with short film THE COAT (6 mins) – see page 3.

ANOMALISA

08/09

FRI 18 – THURS 31 MAR

DIR:CHARLIE KAUFMAN & DUKE JOHNSON USA • 2015 • 1 HR 30 MINS

Anomalisa, the latest brainteaser from the mastermind behind films like Being John Malkovich and Adaptation, is a tender, touching and achingly funny stop-motion animation. Michael (David Thewlis) is crippled by the mundanity of his life, his own paranoia and his inability to connect with people, when he encounters something extraordinary: Lisa (Jennifer Jason Leigh). But Lisa is an anomaly. Charlie Kaufman delivers an insightful rumination on love with Anomalisa, one that finds its perfect expression in the fragility of the stop-motion figures.

HIGH-RISE FRI 18 – THURS 31 MAR

DIR: BEN WHEATLEY • UK • 2015 1 HR 59 MINS

Tom Hiddleston stars in Ben Wheatley’s (Kill List, Sightseers) much-anticipated adaptation of J.G. Ballard’s savage, brilliant 1975 novel, a satire of Thatcherite excess and consumerist values. Hiddleston is Dr. Robert Laing who moves into a luxurious new apartment block, a shining beacon of modernism. He’s quickly seduced by its social scene but then flaws begin to emerge in the building and in parallel, cracks in the regimented social strata also start to show. “High-Rise is a welcome, hallucinogenic-laced shot of adrenaline in the arm.” - THE INDEPENDENT

ACCESS SCREENING The 6.40pm screening on Tues 29 Mar will include audio description and on-screen captioning.

NEW RELEASES

VICTORIA FRI 1 – THURS 14 APR

DIR: SEBASTIAN SCHIPPER • GERMANY 2015 • 2 HRS 18 MINS • SUBTITLED

One of the most talked about films of the year, Sebastian Schipper’s extraordinary Victoria is an exhilarating heist thriller shot at night on the streets of Berlin in a single continuous take. Victoria (Laia Costa) is a young Spanish student living in Berlin and looking for a little adventure, but one night she gets far more than she bargained for. At one

of Berlin’s underground dance clubs, she meets the charismatic Sonne (Frederick Lau) and his friends, and takes up their offer of a tour of the real Berlin. It’s soon clear they have bigger plans than stealing beers and trespassing on rooftops. The fact that Victoria was shot in one (genuine!) single continuous take is remarkable in itself but the film’s strengths do not

rely on what could be seen as mere gimmick – this is bold and energetic filmmaking with charismatic performances, an atmospheric score (courtesy of Nils Frahm) and edge of your seat thrills. Not to be missed! “Victoria is a huge logistical and artistic gamble; one which pays off astonishingly.” - THE GUARDIAN

DHEEPAN FRI 22 APR – THURS 5 MAY

DIR:JACQUES AUDIARD • FRANCE 2015 • 1 HR 55 MINS • SUBTITLED

Jacques Audiard’s (A Prophet, Rust and Bone) explosive immigrant drama depicts a Sri Lankan rebel fighter who attempts a better life in Paris under a dead man’s identity. A mixture of brutal social realism and nail-biting suspense, the film’s grit and boldness won it the top prize at last year’s Cannes Film Festival. Antonythasan Jesuthasan, a former Tamil Tiger child soldierturned-acclaimed-novelist, gives a breakout lead performance as the multi-faceted Dheepan. It’s early days but QFT’s Programmer thinks this might be the film of the year.

Screening with short film ABU AMMAR IS COMING (6 mins) – see page 3.

MILES AHEAD FRI 22 APR – THURS 5 MAY

DIR: DON CHEADLE • USA • 2015 CERT TBC 1 HR 40 MINS

Written and directed by actor Don Cheadle in his directorial debut, Miles Ahead is a free-form biopic of undisputed jazz great Miles Davis. Set predominantly in 1970s Manhattan, the film explores the heady early days of Davis’ success along with the darker, reclusive times battling the addiction that almost ended his life and struggling to overcome the creative block which threatened to end his career. Cheadle gives a brilliant performance, full of attitude, exploring both the man and the myth, as he recounts his exploits to Rolling Stone reporter Dave Braden (Ewan McGregor).

NEW RELEASES

MARGUERITE FRI 1 – THURS 7 APR

DIR: XAVIER GIANNOLI • FRANCE/CZECH REPUBLIC/BELGIUM • 2015 2 HRS 9 MINS • SUBTITLED

1921: not far from Paris, a party is being held at Marguerite Dumont’s (Catherine Frot) mansion. Nobody knows much about the mysterious Marguerite except that she has devoted her whole life to her passion: music. As she takes centre stage, she sings enthusiastically – but terribly out of tune. Inspired by the real-life tale of Florence Foster Jenkins (also the subject of Stephen Frears’ forthcoming film), this original, funny and touching costume drama was a runaway success in its native France.

THE BRAND NEW TESTAMENT FRI 22 – WED 27 APR

DIR: JACO VAN DORMAEL • BELGIUM/ FRANCE/LUXEMBOURG • 2015 1 HR 55 MINS • SUBTITLED

As soon as you see the still of Catherine Deneuve in bed with a gorilla, you know this is going to be an interesting ride. What if God were Belgian and a cantankerous, vindictive slob (Benoît Poelvoorde) who runs the whole show from a dilapidated apartment in Brussels? And what if he had a young daughter (Pili Groyne) who one day decided that enough was enough, and set out to write her own gospel, with the help of six of her own disciples? Belgian comic visionary Jaco Van Dormael delivers his most flamboyant work since Toto the Hero.

DIR: ALICE WINOCOUR FRANCE/BELGIUM • 2015 1 HR 38 MINS • SUBTITLED

A young ex-soldier suffering from PTSD (Matthias Schoenaerts) protects a woman (Diane Kruger) and her child from a brutal home invasion, in this masterfully engineered thriller from director Alice Winocour (Augustine). With a superbly charismatic and immediately physical central performance from Schoenaerts, echoing the sensitive-thug persona with which he made his name in films like Bullhead and Rust and Bone, this muscular, nervejangling siege thriller packs a considerable punch.

COUPLE IN A HOLE FRI 8 – THURS 14 APR

DIR: TOM GEENS UK/BELGIUM/FRANCE • 2015 1 HR 45 MINS • PARTIALLY SUBTITLED

What would drive a couple to live together in a hole in a forest, away from the modern world? This visceral and fascinating film explores the complex and devastating story of the couple (Kate Dickie and Paul Higgins) as they struggle to keep their bizarre existence from consuming them. A well-meaning local farmer (Jérôme Kircher) offers help, but what does he want in return? A deconstructive, Haneke-esque film from Belgian filmmaker Tom Geens, featuring a score composed by BEAK> (Geoff Barrow of Portishead).

THE CLUB FRI 1 – MON 4 APR

DIR: PABLO LARRAÍN • CHILE • 2015 1 HR 37 MINS • SUBTITLED

DIR: JAMIE ADAMS • UK • 2015 1 HR 25 MINS

This gloriously funny relationship comedy concerns a pair of fugitive sisters pretending to be poets who find refuge at a poetry/ camping weekend in the Welsh Black Mountains. Directed by Jamie Adams, it stars the superb Alice Lowe (Sightseers) and Dolly Wells as the sisters on the run. Downton Abbey’s Tom Cullen co-stars as the poet who comes between them. NASTY BABY FRI 8 – MON 11 APR

In his latest film, Sebastián Silva (The Maid) directs and stars as a Brooklyn artist trying to have a child with his boyfriend (TV on the Radio’s Tunde Adebimpe) and their best friend (Kristen Wiig), whilst developing a seismically awkward art project about the experience. Complications arise, however, when a malevolent vagrant known as “The Bishop” makes life uncomfortable for all involved. Nasty Baby begins as a nuanced, satirical relationship comedy before descending into an uncomfortably twisted drama.

SUN 17 APR, 9PM

CERT TBC

The Process Church of the Final Judgment is associated with a long list of lurid conspiracy theories including the assassination of Bobby Kennedy, and being the root of the notorious Son of Sam serial killings. This film gets behind the veils of the cult and tracks their journey from their formation in London’s Mayfair, through flirtations with pop royalty, and their spread state-side that resulted in them being christened ‘one of the most dangerous satanic cults in America’. Followed by a Q&A with director Neil Edwards.

DEPARTURE

Theatre director Simon Stone delivers a powerful, low-key yet achingly intense reimagining of Ibsen’s ‘The Wild Duck’. Retaining all the devastating power of the original play, Stone’s strikingly cinematic feature debut transposes the story into a rural Australian setting with a cast led by Geoffrey Rush (The King’s Speech). “A mood piece told with a lyrical energy both lush and dangerous.” - THE GUARDIAN

SECOND SIGHT

RAN

Second Sight is QFT’s pick of restored and re-released classics, back on the big screen where they belong.

TUES 12 – THURS 14 APR

DIR: AKIRA KUROSAWA • JAPAN/FRANCE 1985 • 2 HRS 41 MINS • SUBTITLED

A stunning digital restoration of Akira Kurosawa’s (Seven Samurai, Rashômon) Ran, his famous interpretation of King Lear as a jidaigeki epic; and the most expensive Japanese film ever produced on its original release in 1985. Spectacularly beautiful, with gorgeous, colour-saturated frames, it is an undoubted masterpiece; the product of a breathtaking artistic vision that works as an historical epic and Shakespearean adaptation as well as a bloody, action-packed war film with a silent central battle scene that must be seen to be believed.

DIR: RICHARD LONCRAINE • UK/USA 1995 • 2 HRS 25 MINS APPROX. (TOTAL EVENT RUNNING TIME)

This event is one of the highlights of the Shakespeare on Film programme; a series of events and screenings throughout 2016 celebrating the lasting legacy of William Shakespeare, 400 years after his death.

SPECIAL EVENTS

FALSOS POSITIVOS THURS 14 APR, 3.30PM

DIR: SIMONE BRUNO & DADO CARILLO COLOMBIA • 2009 • 55 MINS + DISCUSSION SUBTITLED • RECOMMENDED AGE 16+

Falsos Positivos is a selfproduced documentary that confronts the military scandal in Colombia in October 2008. In response to President Uribe’s democratic security policy, Colombian Army troops killed civilians and dressed the bodies in military fatigues to claim rewards offered in the fight against revolutionary armed groups. The film involves testimony from victims’ relatives, activists, a former General, political analysts and witnesses. It includes scenes which viewers may find upsetting. Followed by a discussion hosted by Dr. Philippa Page, Dr. Nick Morgan and Dr. Simon Philpott (Newcastle University), and Dr. Paula Blair (Lancaster University).

This is a pilot event for the ‘Screening Violence: a Transnational Approach to Local Imaginaries of Post-Conflict’ project initiated by researchers at the School of Modern Languages, Newcastle University. FREE admission.
