ELVIS & NIXON FRI 24 JUN – THURS 7 JUL

DIR: LIZA JOHNSON • USA • 2016 1 HR 26 MINS

On a December morning in 1970, Elvis Presley (Michael Shannon) shows up on the lawn of the White House to request a meeting with the most powerful man in the world, President Nixon (Kevin Spacey). It was a meeting that was forever immortalised in an iconic photo, but what compelled the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll to visit Nixon seemingly out of the blue? Elvis & Nixon goes behind the scenes of this bizarre encounter and reveals the true and untold story, to great comic effect.

THE DAUGHTER

TALE OF TALES

FRI 10 – THURS 16 JUN

DIR: SIMON STONE • AUSTRALIA • 2015 1 HR 35 MINS

A darkly tense and strikingly well performed film that marks the directorial debut of acclaimed Australian theatre director Simon Stone.

FRI 17 – THURS 23 JUN

DIR: MATTEO GARRONE • ITALY/FRANCE/UK • 2015 • 2 HRS 14 MINS

Inspired by the seventeenthcentury Neapolitan fairytales of Giambattista Basile and drawing from a madly varied palette of influences, Gomorrah director Matteo Garrone’s English language debut is a gorgeously grotesque triptych of fables. It begins with a king and queen (John C. Reilly and Salma Hayek), unable to conceive a child until a sorcerer tells the queen to consume the heart of

a sea serpent. The second tale stars Toby Jones in a noteperfect performance as a king who nurses a pet flea until it reaches the size of a small car. Finally, Vincent Cassel’s sexobsessed king is tricked into an undesirable sexual tryst... Deliriously inventive and shot through with an outrageous and twisted beauty, Tale of Tales is a riot of gothic fantasy, with a triumphantly unique vision of cinema at its macabre heart.

««««« “Matteo Garrone’s Tale of Tales is fabulous in every sense [...] gloriously mad, rigorously imagined, visually wonderful.” - PETER BRADSHAW, THE GUARDIAN ACCESS SCREENING The 6.20pm screening on Thurs 23 June will include audio description and on-screen captioning.

Christian (Paul Schneider) returns home to rural New South Wales for his father Henry’s (Geoffrey Rush) marriage. But an announcement that will affect the entire community results in bitter recriminations. Simon Stone’s adaptation of Ibsen’s ‘The Wild Duck’ is a tightly wrought examination of family dynamics and the brittle nature of smalltown life.

BANG GANG (UNE HISTOIRE D’AMOUR MODERNE)

THE MEASURE OF A MAN FRI 3 – TUES 7 JUN MATINEES: SUN 12 & SAT 18 JUN

DIR: STÉPHANE BRIZÉ • FRANCE • 2015 CERT 1 HR 33 MINS • SUBTITLED TBC

Vincent Lindon is superb as a man facing the realities of unemployment and the market in Stéphane Brizé’s gripping, fiercely intelligent French social drama. Lindon plays Thierry, made redundant from his factory job. The film follows him through the depressing and sometimes farcical search for work in contemporary France, whilst trying to retain his dignity and humanity. While there are charming comic touches, this is a naturalistic and devastating view of blue collar life in the modern world that will draw comparisons to arthouse smash, Two Days, One Night.

EL ABRAZO DE LA SERPIENTE

EMBRACE OF THE SERPENT FRI 10 – THURS 16 JUN

DIR: CIRO GUERRA • COLOMBIA VENEZUELA/ARGENTINA • 2015 2 HRS 4 MINS • SUBTITLED

Recalling such visionary films as Jim Jarmusch’s Dead Man and Werner Herzog’s Aguirre, the Wrath of God, Ciro Guerra’s stunning journey through the heart of the Colombian Amazon is pure cinema. This blistering commentary on the ravages of colonialism, filmed in gorgeous black and white, is inspired by the real-life journals of two explorers who, 40 years apart, travelled the Colombian Amazon with the help of a tribal shaman in search of the hard-to-find and sacred psychedelic Yakruna plant.

BANG GANG (A MODERN LOVE STORY) MON 20 – THURS 23 JUN

DIR: EVA HUSSON • FRANCE • 2015 1 HR 38 MINS • SUBTITLED

Eva Husson’s ironic, sun-kissed salute to teen spirit evokes the worlds of Larry Clark and Sofia Coppola as it captures a dreamy summer of sex, seduction and consequences, and sets it to a cool soundtrack of synth pop from White Sea. George and her friend Laetitia are happy to spend the summer lazing by the pool and indulging the advances of desperately horny bad boys like Alex. The fearless George ups the ante by turning tame games of Spin the Bottle and Truth or Dare into something wilder and more daring.

DIR: STEFANO SOLLIMA • ITALY/FRANCE CERT TBC 2015 • 2 HRS 10 MINS • SUBTITLED ´

After adapting the crime hit Gomorrah for TV, Italian director Stefano Sollima goes straight to the big screen for a fast-moving political thriller. When a notorious gangster known as ‘Samurai’ (Claudio Amendola) wants to turn the ancient Roman harbour into the new Las Vegas, it sets into motion a deadly game of deception, decadence and collusion between organised crime and politicians. Elevated by an atmospheric score from French electronic duo M83 and an impressive ensemble cast, the film builds steadily to an audacious, operatic finale.

Kate Beckinsale excels in her role as the deliciously devious Lady Vernon and delivers each line with relish. With exquisite period detail and a script teeming with bon mots and witty dialogue, Love & Friendship is a rare—and rarified—treat. REMAINDER FRI 24 – THURS 30 JUN

DIR: OMER FAST • UK/GERMANY • 2015 1 HR 43 MINS

Based on the bestselling novel by Tom McCarthy, video artist Omer Fast’s debut feature follows a young man (Tom Sturridge) who tries to reconstruct his past out of fragmented memories. His obsessive efforts are funded by a large financial settlement for an accident he cannot remember, but neither his friends nor he can anticipate the extremes he will go to in realising his quest. With echoes of Jonathan Glazer and Shane Carruth, Fast offers a narrative that is purposefully obscure, complex and almost certainly not what it seems.

QFT’s pick of restored and re-released classics, back on the big screen where they belong.

FRI 24 – THURS 30 JUN

Ken Loach’s first feature film and a landmark in British social realist filmmaking released in a new digital restoration. This snapshot of ‘60s London stars Carol White (Up the Junction, Cathy Come Home) as young mother Joy. Clutching at any slight chance of happiness, she falls for his associate, Dave (Terence Stamp) - but with heart-breaking results. Don’t miss Versus: The Life and Films of Ken Loach (see page 12).

Cult-pop raconteur Aidan Moffat, best known for his lyrics about sex, drugs and male anxiety, decides to rewrite and perform ´ Scotland’s oldest songs.

Just in time for US election season, America’s favourite political provocateur, Michael Moore, is back with his new film. Where to Invade Next is an expansive, hilarious, and subversive comedy in which the director confronts the most pressing issues facing America today and finds solutions in the most unlikely places. The creator of Fahrenheit 9/11 and Bowling for Columbine has returned with an epic movie that’s unlike anything he has done before—an eyeopening call to arms to capture the American Dream and restore it in, of all places, America.

SAT 4 – MON 6 JUN

Dubbed by Roger Ebert as ‘the most exciting film of Shakespeare ever made,’ Zeffirelli’s Romeo and Juliet brings the play to life by foregrounding emotion above all. Its visual exuberance, with every frame populated by the lavish colours and textures of Renaissance Italy, earned Oscars for cinematography and costume design, while the vibrant performances by the two relatively unknown young leads are complemented by Nina Rota’s delicate score. The film has been digitally remastered especially for the Shakespeare season so it would be a tragedy to miss it on the big screen. “For many, this remains the definitive big-screen Romeo and Juliet.” - RICHARD LUCK, FILM4

DIR: LAURENCE OLIVIER • UK • 1948 • 2 HRS 27 MINS

DIR: GUS VAN SANT • USA • 1991 • 1 HR 40 MINS

The energy and panache that Luhrmann brings to this meticulously well-conceived retelling of Shakespeare’s classic tale of “star-crossed” lovers makes it one of the most successful Shakespearean updates of all time.

Cole Porter’s glorious music transforms The Taming of the Shrew, one of Shakespeare’s most problematic plays, into a toe-tapping tour de force with some of the most loved tunes in musical theatre.

Leonardo di Caprio as Romeo inhabits a Californian world every bit as passionate and highly-charged as Renaissance Verona, and the fast moving pace matches the exuberance of Shakespeare’s language, which Luhrmann handles with great respect.

The film will be introduced by Conor Mitchell, one of Northern Ireland’s most highly regarded composers, who will reflect on Shakespeare as librettist on Broadway and in Hollywood, with a live performance of some of the songs by Megan McKinney.

Laurence Olivier won an Oscar for his portrayal of Hamlet in this 1948 film version of Shakespeare’s most highly regarded play, but he had previously been directed by Sir Tyrone Guthrie (a former Chancellor of Queen’s) in a stage production for the Old Vic.

There is little to immediately alert us to the Shakespearean roots of Gus Van Sant’s quirky bromance in which River Phoenix and Keanu Reeves play two young hustlers on the streets of Portland, Oregon. But scene by scene parallels with Henry IV, Part 1 begin to emerge.

Christopher Fitz-Simon, a former director of the Abbey Theatre, will present his talk “Tyrone Guthrie & The Shakespeare Revolution,” offering fresh (and sometimes startling) new insights into his work with Olivier and Alex Guinness who he also directed in Hamlet.

The screening will be introduced Kurt Taroff from the School of Creative Arts at Queen’s who will consider the unusual way in which the screenplay has been adapted from the Shakespeare, illustrated by some short scenes performed live from the original play.

The screening will be introduced by David Grant from the School of Creative Arts at Queen’s who will reflect on the orality of Elizabethan culture and why this sits so well with cinema.

Andrei Tarkovsky’s extraordinarily accomplished debut feature is a powerful and moving tale of a 12-year-old boy who vows to avenge his family’s death at the hands of the Nazis.

Regarded by many as Andrei Tarkovsky’s finest film, this epic tale of the great medieval icon painter chronicles a turbulent period of Russian history and was long suppressed by the politically sensitive Soviet authorities.

Reflecting upon his own childhood and the destiny of the Russian people, this beautiful and densely layered film is Andrei Tarkovsky’s most autobiographical work.

Filmed in Italy just prior to his defection to the west, Andrei Tarkovsky’s unforgettably haunting film explores the melancholy of exile from one’s homeland.

The 2.20pm screening on Sun 5 June will be introduced by Des O’Rawe, lecturer in Film Studies at Queen’s, who will provide a brief overview of Tarkovsky’s career.
