Tom Hiddleston stars in Ben Wheatley’s (Kill List, Sightseers) much-anticipated adaptation of J.G. Ballard’s savage, brilliant 1975 novel, a satire of Thatcherite excess and consumerist values. Luca Guadagnino’s follow-up to his acclaimed I Am Love sees him once again working with Tilda Swinton, this time in a sun-scorched remake of Jacques Deray’s 1969 classic La Piscine. An androgynous rock star (Swinton) and her filmmaker lover (Matthias Schoenaerts) find their idyllic holiday on a Sicilian island spoilt by the arrival of an old record producer acquaintance (Ralph Fiennes) and his petulant daughter (Dakota Johnson). Emotional and sexual tensions run high as desire and jealousy reach boiling point in this provocative and tension-filled psychological drama.

Robert Eggers’ debut is set in 17th Century New England, as an isolated Puritan family living on the edge of a forest are sucked into religious hysteria and accusations of witchcraft. When the youngest child of William (Ralph Ineson) and Katherine (Kate Dickie) disappears, one of their other four children, Thomasin (Anya Taylor-Joy) is suspected of being a witch. Impeccable period recreations and equally impressive performances from the tight knit cast help to make The Witch a highly atmospheric and utterly chilling experience.

Anomalisa, the latest brainteaser from the mastermind behind films like Being John Malkovich and Adaptation, is a tender, touching and achingly funny stopmotion animation. Michael (David Thewlis) is crippled by the mundanity of his life, his own paranoia and his inability to connect with people, when he encounters something extraordinary: Lisa (Jennifer Jason Leigh). But Lisa is an anomaly. Charlie Kaufman delivers an insightful rumination on love with Anomalisa, one that finds its perfect expression in the fragility of the stop-motion figures.

A new political thriller adapted from David Park’s 2008 novel. Henry Stanfield (Roger Allam), a career diplomat experienced in conflict resolution, has just been appointed Truth Commissioner to Northern Ireland. The PM, eager to cement her legacy as the peacemaker, urges a commission following the South African model of Truth and Reconciliation. But though Stanfield starts bravely, he quickly uncovers some bloody and inconvenient truths about those now running the country; truths which none of those in power are prepared to have revealed.

The motivations of a care giver for the terminally ill are thrown into question in Michel Franco’s complex drama. Tim Roth is David, a nurse who works with terminally ill patients. Efficient and dedicated, he develops strong and intimate relationships with each person he cares for. But outside of his work, David is struggling with an ongoing burden of guilt and remorse. Poignant and reflective, but also unsentimental and challenging in its intriguing moral dimensions, Chronic features a career-best performance from Roth as a man at the end of his emotional tether.

Set in the heat of the summer in the Austrian countryside, Goodnight Mommy is an unnerving and inventively chilling horror seen through the eyes of twin brothers. Saturated in chilly dread, darkness and truly shocking acts of violence, Goodnight Mommy leaves an eerie, foreboding sense of unease that will stay with you long after the credits roll.

A darkly intricate Israeli drama examining an unhealthily symbiotic relationship between two sisters. Chelli lives with and cares for her intellectually disabled younger sister Gabby in a relationship that is as codependent as it is loving – until new boyfriend Zohar enters the scene. This is a tour de force from director Asaf Korman, who gains remarkable performances from his wife Liron Ben-Shlush (the film is based on her own experience) and Dana Ivgy, in the two lead roles.

After contemplating the heavens in Nostalgia for the Light, the great Chilean filmmaker Patricio Guzmán turns his masterful eye to the ocean to uncover the history of the indigenous people of Patagonia. In pre-colonial times, the nomadic Kaweskar (or “water people”) lived and thrived in harmony with the sea; today they have all but vanished. Interviewing the last of the Kaweskar, Guzmán chronicles the terrible devastation wrought by this almost complete genocide, discovering an unsettling parallel to the thousands who were disappeared by more recent regimes.

From the freedom songs of the ‘60s and hits like “I’ll Take You There” in the ‘70s, to funked-up collaborations with Prince and her recent albums with Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy, Mavis has stayed true to her roots, kept her family close, and inspired millions along the way.

This documentary explores the stories of women who ‘take the boat’ to England for the abortion treatment they need – a journey made by thousands every year. Whereas France recently celebrated the 40th anniversary of abortion legislation, the woman’s right to choose is still not guaranteed everywhere in Europe. Followed by a panel discussion exploring the issues raised in the film. Free admission for screening and discussion – over 18s only.

A BRIEF HERSTORY OF CINEMA All About My Mother will be preceded by a 30-minute illustrated presentation. A Brief Herstory of Cinema is a Queen’s University student-produced zine (or fanzine) discussing contemporary questions of feminism, women in the film industry, and wider questions of the representation of women both on screen and across media platforms. The presentation discusses the process of creating the zine and the conclusions drawn. Free copies of the zine will be available.
