WELCOME TO 2015 AT OFT!

It’s a brand new year at QFT and to mark the occasion we have given our monthly What’s On a bit of facelift. We think it’s clearer, cleaner and easier to read about the films you want to see – we hope you do too. As always we’d love to know what you think so please email us at qftcomments@qub.ac.uk with your thoughts. January is always an exciting month for film lovers; it marks the start of the annual awards season and sees the release of many of the year’s biggest, most anticipated films. This year looks set to be a vintage one and we are delighted to be able to include some of the best films we have seen for a long time in our new programme. So, amongst the many cinematic treats you have to look forward to we have the powerful The Theory of Everything, the intensely moving Testament of Youth and this year’s wild card, the exhilarating Whiplash. Alongside, of course, our pick of the best new releases, documentaries and re-issued classics. So come along and settle in at QFT for month of fantastic films. Before I go, it is ironic that as I write this, looking forward to the new year for QFT, that this very future is in doubt as a result of proposed, potentially devastating, cuts to our core funding from DCAL. There is still time to have your say and influence the outcome of proposals so if you care about QFT, our other great film organisations (Belfast Film Festival, Cinemagic and Derry’s Nerve Centre) and, indeed, arts and culture across NI, then please, please make your voice heard and join the #SaveNIFilm campaign. We have until 29 December to have our say so please take the time and send an email to budgetconsultation@dcalni.gov.uk. To make it even easier for you we have a downloadable template letter and online form that can be found on our home page www. queensfilmtheatre.com and on our Facebook page www.facebook.com/queensfilmtheatre. See you in 2015!

Once a healthy, active young man, Hawking (Eddie Redmayne) received an earth-shattering diagnosis at 21 years of age. With Jane (Felicity Jones) fighting tirelessly by his side,

Together, they defy impossible odds, breaking new ground in medicine and science, and achieving more than they could ever have dreamed. Introduction by Alan Fitzsimmons, Astrophysics Research Centre, Queen's University Belfast, on Sat 3 Jan, 6.20pm.

BIG EYES THURS 1 – THURS 15 JAN DIR: TIM BURTON • USA • 2014 • 1 HR 44 MINS

Amy Adams stars in Tim Burton’s compelling tale of a true-life art scandal. Big Eyes tells the extraordinary true story of Margaret Keane (Amy Adams) and her husband Walter (Christoph Waltz), who takes credit for his wife’s distinctive artworks and enjoys fame and fortune while she toils in anonymity, painting for sixteen hours a day under lock and key. Eventually Margaret decides she can’t take any more and leaves Walter, but how can she prove he had been deceiving the world for years and finally get the recognition she deserves? This fascinating true story is the pet project of Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski, who wrote Tim Burton’s earlier Ed Wood. The excellent supporting cast includes Danny Huston, Jason Schwartzman, Krysten Ritter and Terence Stamp.

FRI 16 – THURS 29 JAN DIR: DAMIEN CHAZELLE • USA • 2014 • 1 HR 46 MINS

A gifted young drummer finds himself challenged by a brilliant mentor intent on pushing his student to greatness, in this multi-award winning, must-see drama. Andrew Neyman (Miles Teller, Divergent) is an ambitious young jazz musician, eager to shake off his mediocre background and hungry to rise to the top of his elite music conservatory. Terence Fletcher (J.K. Simmons) is the fierce, unorthodox instructor who leads the top ensemble at the school.

When Fletcher selects Neyman to join his band, the stakes are dramatically raised. Sniffing out the fear beneath Neyman’s confidence, Fletcher ruthlessly begins to exploit it, pushing Neyman beyond the limits of both his ability and his sanity. The new film from Turkish master Nuri Bilge Ceylan (Once Upon a Time in Anatolia), winner of the Palme d’Or at Cannes.
