WELCOME Message from the Principal This has been a tremendous season for sport, recreation and physical activity at Queen’s University. From the successful opening of the Queen’s Centre to Football’s Vanier Cup drive along with our Curling, Squash, Rugby and Volleyball championships as well as the numerous other accolades you have all earned this season - it has been a pleasure to cheer and celebrate your success both on the field of play and in the classroom. To the student-athletes - your perseverance, dedication and determination to your academics, your sport and to representing our university is something we celebrate with great enthusiasm. I am also very appreciative of the time taken to reach into our community and contribute to so many local causes through activities that foster community, sport, health and wellness. All of these successes add to our rich tradition within our institution and garner great respect outside our university. You are each a role model and I commend your efforts. I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge our tremendous coaching staff and the many other support staff who have made the 2009-10 season one of the best in school history. Your expertise, passion, and commitment to our athletics programs are truly invaluable. I salute your efforts in helping to shape the lives and successes of our student-athletes and teams. To our graduating athletes who are leaving Queen’s this year - I wish you the best of luck. Your experience at Queen’s will serve you well in your future endeavours. As our newest alumni, I encourage you to remain engaged with your respective programs and support future generations to be a part of the athletic legacy you helped forge. Finally, as the season draws to a close – I hope that you will take time to reflect on an historic time for athletics and recreation and to celebrate a terrific season! Cha Gheill!

Message from Associate Vice-Principal and Dean of Student Affairs As the 2009-2010 Academic Year draws to a close, I share in your excitement about the great successes enjoyed this year by everyone associated with Queen’s Athletics & Recreation programs. Our teams and athletes continued to excel individually and collectively, achieving new personal and team “bests.” I am very proud of you, and of our programs. Of course, the opening of the new Queen’s Centre offered a critical positive moment in the life of our sporting and social culture. It is a testament not only to the commitments we have to fostering excellence; but as well to the dedication of our students and benefactors to develop resources to enact those commitments. When I walk through that incredible new building, I see students involved with practice, competition and their own personal efforts to build strength, preparing to meet the challenges that the next day, or game will present to them. It is important to me to particularly acknowledge the leadership and support offered by student team captains, coaches, and the staff of Queen’s Athletic & Recreation. Each of you demonstrates your care and skill, through often invisible daily efforts as well as those pivotal public moments. Thank you so much for your hard work! For those of you receiving awards this evening, I would like to congratulate you on your achievements—which are especially notable given your formidable peers. For all of you, thank you for your contributions to the Queen’s spirit and the culture of sport that is so intertwined with our traditions. Jason Laker, Ph.D. Associate Vice-Principal & Dean of Student Affairs

11/14/09 - Perfection! The Gaels men’s rugby team complete their perfect season with a 23-19 victory over the Western Mustangs to win the OUA Championship. After qualifying for the CIS Women’s Soccer Championship by going unbeaten in 16 games, Renee MacLellan of Kingston, Ont., is named the CIS women’s soccer Player of the Year. 02/14/10 Scoring Machines

03/14/10 Running Man Matt Hulse of Hartington, Ont., made Queen’s history at the 2010 OUA Track and Field Championships. He won the 1500m race and added two silver medals in the 1000m and 4x800m relay to become the first Queen’s student to earn three medals at the championships. He followed up his performance with a gold medal in the 1000m and a silver medal in the 1500m at the CIS Championships. Hulse also recieved the OUA & CIS Community Service Award in both Cross Country and Track & Field.

Elizabeth Kench of Gananoque, Ont., and Becky Conroy of Pembroke, Ont., finish one-two in OUA women’s hockey scoring. Kench finished the season with a league-best 38 points (12 goals, 26 assists) while Conroy was a close second with 34 points (17 goals, 17 assists). Kench’s 26 assists were also tops in the nation.

03/06/10 - Redemption! After finishing second at the OUA Championship the last two years, the men’s volleyball team reclaims the OUA banner as they defeat the Guelph Gryphons in a thrilling five set match. The Gaels go on to finish 5th at the CIS Championship after posting victories over the Montreal Carabins and the Thompson Rivers WolfPack.

02/24/10 - Mighty Mitch Mitch Leger of Kingston, Ont., leads the Gaels back from a 14 point, fourth quarter deficit as Queen’s defeats the Ryerson Rams 79-76 in overtime in the OUA East Quarter-final. Leger posts his 17th double-double of the season in the win as he scored a season-high 35 points and pulled down 12 rebounds. Leger finished the regular season as the only player in the country to average more than 20 points and 10 rebounds per game, and led the nation in rebounding (11.8 per game).

03/14/10 - Banner Season Queen’s wins a total of six banners during the 2009-10 season, their most since 2003-04 when they secured seven titles. Football, Men’s Volleyball, Men’s Rugby and Women’s Squash all win OUA Championships while Football and Men’s Curling pick up CIS Championship banners. The two national championship titles mark the first time in the school’s history that Queen’s has won multiple national championships in a single academic year.

Season Recap It was an up-and-down season for the men’s basketball team during the 2009-10 season. After struggling out of the gate, the Gaels managed to turn things around midway through the season as they rattled off a five game winning streak to vault them into playoff contention. From there, the Gaels rode the exceptional play of fourth year forward Mitch Leger as they clinched the fourth seed in the OUA East. Leger, who led the nation in rebounding and finished fifth in scoring, saved one of his best performances for the Gaels quarter-final matchup with the Ryerson Rams. After trailing by 14 points after three quarters, Leger and the Gaels stormed back to force overtime and eventually pulled out the victory in their first playoff game in the ARC. Leger would post his 16th double-double of the season with 35 points and 12 rebounds. Leger’s outstanding play throughout the season earned him an OUA East First Team All-Star selection while Baris Ondul was named the OUA Ken Shields Award winner for his achievements in basketball, academics and in the community.

Unfortunately, the Gaels could not turn their regular season into playoff success as the team lost to the Toronto Varsity Blues in the quarterfinals of the OUA playoffs. Brittany Moore, who led the team in scoring and finished fourth overall in the OUA, was named an OUA First Team All-Star for the second straight season while Katie Guthrie was named a Second Team All-Star.  Vanier Cup Champions

 Mitchell Bowl Champions  Yates Cup Champions Season Recap It had been 17 years since Queen’s won a Vanier Cup title but the 2009 version of the Gaels ended the university’s drought with a thrilling 33-31 come-from-behind win over the Calgary Dinos. The victory marked the end of an exciting playoff run for the Gaels, who defeated the No. 5 Western Mustangs, the No. 1 Laval Rouge et Or and the No. 2 Dinos to capture the national championship. The win also marked the fourth straight decade in which Queen’s has won the Canadian university football championship. The regular season was highlighted by victories over Guelph (52-49) and Western (27-26) in which QB Danny Brannagan engineered last minute game winning drives. The defence also stood tall stealing victories over Ottawa (20-8) and McMaster (8-7) – both without the services of Brannagan who was injured. Although the team had several storylines throughout the season, Brannagan kept stealing the headlines with his march towards 10,000-yards passing as well as his epic battle with counterpart Michael Faulds from Western. Although Faulds topped him as the CIS all-time passing leader and was the OUA MVP, Brannagan was sensational when it counted. He twice edged Faulds in head-to-head games, then led the Gaels in an unforgettable playoff run which saw him capture the Yates Cup MVP and the Vanier Cup MVP. The Gaels championship run caught the attention of football fans across the country. Moments after the win, the city erupted in celebration and days later would honour the team with a victory parade. In late December, the Canadian Press voted Queen’s 4th top team of the 2009 season. Season Recap The 2009-10 season was a breakout season for the Gaels men’s hockey team. The team had their best season since 1983-84 as they posted 14 wins and finished fifth overall in the OUA East. Included in those 14 victories was a 3-0 shutout win over their cross-town rivals, the RMC Paladins, in the 24th annual Carr-Harris Cup. It was also a standout year for a number of players on the team, especially rookie scoring sensations Payton Liske and Jordan Mirwaldt. The two first year forwards, playing on the Gaels top line together for most of the season, led the country in rookie scoring as they both registered 40 points this year. Both players were named to the OUA AllRookie team for their accomplishments, along with blueliner Stephane Chabot, who was the Gaels top defenceman all year. Although the team did not advance through the first round of the OUA playoffs after losing in double-overtime in the deciding game of their best-of-3 series against the Carleton Ravens - the future is bright for Queen’s as they look toward the 2010-2011 season.

Season Recap The Queen’s women’s hockey team roared out of the gate to open the 2009-10 season, registering four straight victories. The team carried that momentum through the entire year as they set a record for most wins and most points in a season, finishing second overall in the OUA. After earning a first round playoff bye, the Gaels faced off against the Guelph Gryphons in the OUA Semifinal. However, the team could not duplicate their regular season success and were subsequently knocked out by the Gryphons. Despite the playoff disappointment the Gaels received a number of outstanding individual performances this season, including Elizabeth Kench and Becky Conroy finishing one-two in OUA scoring. Similar to the men’s team, the Gaels showcased a strong rookie class led by the McHaffie twins, Morgan and Brittany, and goaltender Mel Dodd-Moher. Morgan McHaffie and Dodd-Moher were named to the OUA AllRookie team, with Dodd-Moher also making the CIS All-Rookie Team. Conroy, who was named an OUA First Team AllStar along with team captain Alison Bagg, also earned CIS Second Team All-Canadian status.

Season Recap: The 2009-10 Gaels had a strong regular season

which saw them defeat their rivals from Laurier twice. Queen’s played especially well in the second half of the season when they won six of their last seven games to clinch third place in the OUA standings heading into the playoffs. In the OUA Semifinal, Queen’s faced off against Western, a team that they had lost two close games to during the regular season. In a game that was eerily similar to their meeting from the previous week, the Mustangs used a late goal to squeak out a 8-7 win and end the Gaels streak of five straight appearances in the OUA Championship. The OUA Bronze Medal game saw the Gaels go up against the Toronto Varsity Blues, who went undefeated during the regular season before Laurier surprised them in the semifinal. The Varsity Blues would come out on top by a score of 16-10. Despite the tough finish, the season saw many highlights, including the two aforementioned victories over Laurier. Two Gaels finished in the Top-10 in OUA scoring (Jacqueline Byers - 44 points, Lisa McLaughlin - 37 points) and the team as a whole finished second in the league in goal scoring.

Season Recap This year’s men’s rowing team was extremely close to repeating as OUA Champions but came up short as they finished seven points behind the 2009-10 champions from Western. Morgan Jarvis was one of the top performers at the regatta as he grabbed a pair of gold medals while the team also got a great showing from the men’s heavyweight eight who earned a bronze medal. At the national championships, the team finished seventh with Greg McNally grabbing the Gaels only medal, a bronze in the heavyweight singles. At the Canadian Indoor Rowing Championship held in February, Sean Whitehall struck gold in the Coxswain Challenge. Andrew Joyce secured fourth place in the senior men’s event. In the off season, the men’s team also saw current members Jarvis and Ryan Meyers recongized by Rowing Canada as ‘carded’ athletes for the 2010 season.

Season Recap Although the 2009-10 women’s rowing team did not repeat as OUA Champions, it was still a very successful season for the team. Queen’s earned the bronze medal at the OUA Championships finishing behind Western and Brock but with the competition getting stronger each year, the result was deemed a success. At the national championships, the Gaels were able to repeat as silver medalists as they won one gold, one silver and two bronze medals. During the Canadian Indoor Rowing Championship held in February, Katya Herman placed sixth in the senior lightweight while Sarah Pidgen and Elizabeth Carter placed seventh in the U23 competition. The season also served to prepare future rowers for what lies ahead of them as the women’s team boasted a very strong rookie class. Rowers Karen Donaldson, Jennifer Johnson, Sean Peterson and coxwain Sean Whitehall showed that the future would be bright for this team.

Season Recap The Gaels enjoyed one of their best seasons of the decade as they were simply dominant in the OUA. During the regular season, Queen’s were perfect, outscoring their opposition 411 to 39. Only once did an opponent score more than 10 points while the Gaels scored 30 points or more in all but one game. In September, the Gaels handily defeated 2008 OUA Champions McMaster at Kingston Field in front of a large alumni crowd. In October, Queen’s won at Western for the first time since 2001, with Mason Curtis winning “Man of the Match” honours. After clinching first place in the conference, the Gaels advanced directly to the OUA semifinals where they toppled McMaster 17-8 at Kingston Field. In the OUA Championship, the Gaels took to the field against Western. After falling behind 19-10 in the 2nd half, the Gaels, cheered on by a large crowd of family, teammates and alumni, stormed back to take the lead and held off Western to win the title. The coaching staff recognizes Alistair Clark and Tom Binczyk who graduate after four years of Varsity Rugby with a perfect home record: 24 wins, 0 losses.

Season Recap It was a very successful 2009-10 campaign for the women’s rugby team. After finishing the regular season with a 4-1 record, they knocked off the Trent Excalibur in an exciting OUA Quarter-final matchup to advance to the OUA Semifinals. Although the women would drop their next two games, ultimately finishing fourth overall in the OUA, the team made great strides and promise to be a strong contender for an OUA medal next season. One of the big stories of the season was the play of Andrea Wadsworth. The second year player established herself as one of the top female rugby players in all of Canada by finishing second in the OUA in scoring. She recorded 10 trys during the regular season which earned her both OUA All-Star and CIS All-Canadian status. The Gaels had three other players earn OUA All-Star status along with Wadsworth, including Susan Heald, Jocelyn Poirier and Karlye Wong.

Season Recap The 2009-10 version of the Gaels had a dramatic turnaround from the 2008-09 squad. After finishing sixth in the OUA East a year ago the Gaels improved by 12 points to finish second in the division with an 8-2-4 mark. The team’s success can be directly linked to a stretch between Sept. 20 and Oct. 21 where they were unbeaten in nine games. As well, the Gaels took four out of a possible six points from the top team in the OUA, the Toronto Varsity Blues. By finishing second in the OUA East, the Gaels earned a bye through the first round of the playoffs and hosted the Carleton Ravens in the quarter-finals. The two teams played to a scoreless draw after 120 minutes, advancing the game to a shootout. Unfortunately, the Gaels came out on the losing end, prematurely ending their strong season. The Gaels turnaround was recognized by the league as four players were named to the OUA All-Star teams. Defender Andrew Nador was a First Team All-Star while Mike Arnold, Jordan Brooks and Dan McBride were all named Second Team All-Stars. Arnold and Brooks earned the honour after finishing tied for the team lead in goals with six.

Season Recap The 2009-10 women’s soccer team proved to be an up-and-coming force in the CIS. With Renee MacLellan as the only athlete with more than 2 years experience coming into the season, the Gaels dominated the OUA, posting a 13-1-2 record, the best in the league. An even more telling statistic of the Gaels dominance was their nine game winning streak they posted from Sept. 19 to Oct. 10. During that time, they outscored their opposition 26-2. In total, the Gaels posted 13 shutouts in the regular season, with 7 recorded by Chantel Marson and the other 6 going to Elena Corry. In the OUA playoffs, the Gaels earned victories over Carleton and Laurier, which allowed them to qualify for the CIS Championship. However, they could not bring home an OUA banner as they fell to York 1-0 (4-2 in a shootout). At the CIS Championship, Queen’s opened with a win over St. Francis Xavier and had a 1-0 lead over Trinity Western in the semifinal. However, the Spartans, the eventual CIS Champions, would score late in the game and go on to win on penalty kicks. This remarkable season was highlighted by MacLellan, who scored 12 goals during the regular season and was named the CIS Most Valuable Player. She also earned the OUA East Most Valuable Player, a CIS First-Team AllCanadian and an OUA First-Team All-Star.

Men’s Rugby won the Gaels first banner of 2009-10 when they came-from-behind to defeat the Western Mustangs 23-19. On the same day, the Football team also defeated the Mustangs 43-39. The game was called “the greatest Yates Cup game ever played”. Two weeks later, the Football team capped off their incredible season when they stunned the Calgary Dinos 33-31to win their fourth Vanier Cup title. The Gaels overcame the largest deficit in Vanier Cup history when they came back from an 18 point half-time deficit to win. With three banners won in the fall, the focus turned to the winter sports to see if they could duplicate the success. Women’s Squash kicked things off when they knocked off the Western Mustangs in the championship match to win their second OUA title in three years. Next up was Men’s Volleyball who overcame a two-sets-to-one deficit against the Guelph Gryphons to win their third banner in five seasons. The team opened up with a 12 medal performance at the Trent Invitational before successfully hosting the Queen’s Quad meet where they earned an additional five medals. At the OUA Championships in St. Catharines, the Gaels had five Top 10 performances, led by a seventh place finish from Julian Chang, who qualified for the CIS Championships in the process. Season Recap When you examine the success of the 2009-10 men’s track and field team, it becomes quite apparent that Matt Hulse was a force for the Gaels all season long. At the provincial and national championships, Hulse was a part of all five of the medals that the team won, including a record setting performance at the OUA Championships when he won a Queen’s record three medals. That accomplishment earned him the Track MVP at the championships. Outside of Hulse, the Gaels demonstrated that they have the talent to compete with anyone in the country in relay events. The 4x200m, 4x400m and 4x800m teams were consistent performers all year long earning medals at multiple events. At the CIS Championships, the 4x400m team set a Queen’s record as they just missed out on the podium, finishing fourth. Individually the Gaels were very strong in the 1000m event while Gord Frenke and Shane Kelly gave the Gaels a strong presence in the shorter distances.

Season Recap It was a very successful season for the Queen’s women’s track and field team as they were able to improve in their placing at both the OUA and CIS Championships from the previous season. This was in large part thanks to the performance of the team’s relay teams who were very strong over the course of the season. After earning multiple medals at preparation events leading up to the provincial and national championships, the 4x200m and 4x400m teams were able to pick up bronze medals at the OUA Championships at York University. The 4x400m team was able to set a new Queen’s record in the process. The anchors of both teams were Veronica Catry and Jan Stirling who joined Matt Hulse from the men’s team as the only multiple medal winners at the provincial championships. This season came to a close at the CIS Championships in Windsor where the Gaels just missed out on the podium in the 4x200m event but still managed to improve their placing by two positions over a season ago.

Season Recap For the 5th consecutive year, the Men’s Volleyball team achieved an OUA Finals appearance. After earning a silver medal with a very young squad last season, the Gaels were determined to take the next step. The Gaels defeated Toronto in a romp in the OUA Quarter-finals and then shocked the Western Mustangs in five sets to advance to the OUA Championship. With McMaster being upset in the semifinals, Queen’s faced Guelph and in another five set marathon, the Gaels came out on top to win their third OUA banner in five seasons and fifth since 2000. The win also moved the Gaels onto the CIS Championships where they put in a very strong effort, earning a fifth place finish after defeating the host Thompson Rivers WolfPack. The team benefitted from the excellent play of CIS Second Team All-Canadian Joren Zeeman and tournament all-star Bryan Fautley.

Season Recap While this season’s women’s volleyball squad was young, the team built on their successes from a season ago as they improved their record to 13-6 to finish second in the OUA East division. Although the season started slowly for the Gaels, a stretch of games from Nov. 20 to Feb. 10 saw the team post an 11-2 record, highlighted by a thrilling come-from-behind victory over the York Lions in the team’s first game in the ARC. Home court proved to be a huge advantage for the Gaels this year as they joined Football and Men’s Rugby as the only three teams to win every regular season home game in 2009-10. Queen’s posted a 9-0 record on home court, including 7-0 after their move to the ARC. The Gaels playoff run saw the team avenge their playoff loss from a season ago to York with a four set victory over the Lions. While the team lost both of their games at the OUA Final Four tournament, the Gaels will be back in years to come with OUA All-Stars Natalie Gray, Colleen Ogilvie and Katie Matthews leading the way.

Season Recap It was a season of highs and lows for the men’s curling team in 2009-10. After failing to qualify for the OUA Championships, the team was invited to compete at the CIS Championships hosted by the University of Alberta. The Gaels stepped up their game and defeated OUA rivals Western along with the host Golden Bears, who featured Olympic gold medalist Kevin Martin’s son. With a 5-1 record after round robin play, the Gaels defeated Manitoba in thrilling fashion, stealing two points in the ninth end and one in the tenth to earn a berth in the championship match. Facing 2009 Canadian junior champion and world junior silver medalist Brett Gallant from UPEI, the Gaels went shot for shot with the Panthers and came out on top 7-6. The win earned Queen’s its first national championship in curling and will send the Gaels to Turkey in 2011 to represent Canada at the FISU Winter Games. On the women’s side, the team struggled this year as they posted a 2-6 record for the second straight season. As a result, the team did not qualify for the OUA Championships.

Season Recap To put it simply, the Queen’s women dominated the

OUA women’s golf circuit during the 2009-10 season. The Gaels won the team titles handily in six events. Rookie Hailey Ingleson was a force as she captured the individual title in three of the six tournaments and finished in the top-3 in two others. Casey Ward also captured an individual title at the McMaster Invitational where Queen’s golfers swept the top three positions. Heading into the OUA Championship,s the Gaels were favourites but the team was unable to translate their previous success into a championship. Queen’s wound up finishing second as Ward and Kate Burnett were named Second Team All-Stars. Queen’s men saw a young team experience highs and lows over the course of the year. The team started out strong, finishing third at the Queen’s Invitational. At the OUA Championships, the team played their best round of the year as they led the tournament after Day 1. On the second day, the Gaels continued their strong play but could not hold onto their lead and finished fourth. Sean Lackey was named an OUA First Team All-Star while Taylor Henderson earned an OUA Second Team All-Star nomination.

Season Recap: The Queen’s Athletic Therapy clinic underwent some substantial changes in 2009-2010. In August 2009, long-time Coordinator Dave Ross stepped down from his role as head therapist after 29-years in this position. He continues to be an active and valued employee with Athletic Therapy, as he runs the Athletic Therapy clinic located at Richardson Stadium. Vicky Wiltshire took over as Coordinator of Athletic Therapy after joining the Athletic Therapy team in 1998. In October 2009, James Sawchuk joined our team and has been a valuable addition to our program. Graeme Leverette continues to be of great service to us as the physiotherapist looking after the hockey programs at the Memorial Center.

Fast Facts: • Since 1988, 559 students have contributed their time and energy to keep Queen’s sports teams in action • Vicky Wiltshire becomes the seventh Head Athletic Therapist in Queen’s history. She follows a long line of historic figures who have held the position including: David Ross, Tabby Gow, Stew Langdon, Hal Dunlop, Senator Jack Powell, Billy Hughes

In December 2009, Athletic Therapy made the move into the new Athletics & Recreation Centre which is a much larger and more functional clinic. This was a long overdue upgrade and is appreciated by trainers and varsity studentathletes. In all, Athletic Therapy had 39 student trainers in 2009-2010, most coming from the School of Kinesiology and Health Studies. The students continue to be the heart of our program, and have once again done an outstanding job helping to keep the varsity athletes healthy. This year we say goodbye to 17 of our student staff, and a huge thank you for your years of dedication.
