Head Coach

Season REVIEW

BETH BARZ

The 2013 season has been a historic one already for Queen’s winning their first provincial championship in program history.

Beth is heading into her 12th season with the Gaels, her ninth as head coach. A Queen’s graduate and women’s rugby alumnus from the School of Physical Education, she has completed her NCCP Level Four Coaching credentials. Beth also completed the National Team Apprenticeship Program and is currently involved with the National Coaching Institute as a module facilitator and mentor coach. Beth has previously worked with teams from Canada U20, Canada U18, Ontario U17 15s and 7s and at the high school where she teaches in Sydenham. She was also recently certified as an IRB Educator and regularly instructs National Coaching Certification Programs in rugby and fundamental movement skills. In 2006, Beth was named CIS Coach of the Year. The 2013 season marked her first OUA Championship win as a coach.

After finishing the regular season as the top team in the OUA Russell Division with a perfect 5-0 record the Gaels kept their success going into the playoffs. Queen’s drew Trent in their OUA quarterfinal match and with their home field advantage playing at Nixon Field in Kingston, had no trouble dispatching the Excalibur in a 7222 victory. Next up in their semifinal was the Western Mustangs. Playing at home once again Queen’s took care of business again thanks in part to Lauren McEwen (Wasaga Beach, Ont.) who had 20 of the Gaels 30 points in their 30-15 win. The OUA Championship game marked a rematch of the 2012 edition, this time in Guelph rather than Kingston. The undefeated Gaels hit the road to avenge their 2012 Championship loss with undefeated Guelph. In a tight game the Gryphons struck first on a try in the early minutes. Queen’s held its resolve and responded in turn. The Gaels Kayla Roote (Peterborough, Ont.) put two trys on the board for the Gaels and Queen’s held on late for a 19-15 win for their first OUA championship title in Queen’s women’s rugby history. The win also marked an end to the Guelph Gryphons title run of five straight OUA Championships and ended their winning streak against OUA opponents at 48. The Gaels McEwen was named the Russell Division MVP finishing second in scoring in the OUA this season. Five Gaels were also named OUA All-Stars, McEwen for her efforts along with teammates Claragh Pegg (Barrie, Ont.), Loren Baldwin (Amherstview, Ont.), Karley Heyman (Harrowsmith, Ont.) and Devon Stride (Kingston, Ont.).

Women’s Rugby wins their first OUA Championship title 19-15 over Guelph ending the Gryphons OUA title streak of five and win streak of 48 GUELPH, Ont. (October 26, 2013) - The No. 3 Queen’s Gaels captured the 2013-14 Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Women’s Rugby Championship title over the No. 2 Guelph Gryphons by a score of 19-15 at Varsity Field Saturday afternoon in Guelph, Ont.

Inside center Lauren McEwen (Wasaga Beach, Ont.) led the Gaels with 20 points against the Western Mustangs. McEwen scored three penalty goals, one try and three conversions.

The Gaels dethroned the five-time OUA Champion Gryphons to earn their first-ever banner and exact revenge after falling to them in last year’s championship. Both teams now advance to the CIS Championships hosted by Laval from October 31-November 3.

After a slow start to the game the Gaels put the first points on the board with a penalty goal from McEwen, she soon followed this up with her second penalty goal of the game. In the 34th minute of play the Gaels scored their first try with McEwen running the ball over the line, she kicked a successful conversion following her try, bringing the Gaels to a 13-0 lead at the half.

“We knew that the game was going to be tight one and it certainly was,” said head coach Beth Barz after the championship win. “We started off a little bit under pressure but held up pretty well. The girls reacted really well (to being down early) it was just a matter of getting ourselves together and doing what we needed to do.”

The Gaels started the second half strong with another penalty goal from McEwan five minutes into the second half. Western quickly gained some momentum, stringing together a set of phases which allowed them to breakt through the Gaels defense and resulting in a try for Meaghann Buitinga (London, Ont.). In the 60th minute of play Kayla Roote (Peterborough, Ont.) scored her first try of the game for the Gaels which was followed by a successful conversion by McEwen. Not long after Roote’s try, Caitie Ryan (Kamloops, B.C.) scored another try for the Gaels with McEwen kicking the conversion. The Gaels continued to fight for the win, and played strong defensively trying to keep the Mustangs away from their goal line. However, Western was able to break through the Gaels defense twice in the final minutes of play with their scrum half Lori Josephson (Beaverton, Ont.) scoring two tries to close the game, bringing the final score to 30-15 for the Gaels.

The Gryphons started the first half strong, doing well to keep possession of the ball. There were a few drops, but Guelph did well to make sure that Queen’s was not able to capitalize on their mistakes. Guelph was the first to put points on the board after a big run by Shannon Spurrell that got the Gryphons up to the try zone. It was Lindsey Yuen getting the try making it 5-0 in the first five minutes of play, after a missed conversion by Guelph. The Gaels battled back putting together a drive that got them into Gryphon territory. Guelph took back possession, but Queen’s quickly regained the ball after a scrum. Queen’s pushed the ball into the try zone with their scrum after being held up by the Gryphons on their first attempt. The Gaels Bronwyn Corrigan (Waterloo, Ont.) jumped on the ball in the try zone making it 7-5 after a successful conversion by Russell Division MVP Lauren McEwen (Wasaga Beach Ont.). Queen’s was able to score another try in the first half by Kayla Roote (Peterborough, Ont.), putting the Gaels 12-5 at the half. The Gryphons managed to get back into the game early on in the second half with Megan Lowry coming in with three good plays that put the Gryphons onto the goal line. Devon Keys ran the ball in for the Gryphons making it 12-10 for the Gaels after another missed conversion by Guelph. Later on in the half, a missed penalty kick by the Gaels turned into an opportunity to get a try for Queen’s. The scrum was held back twice by the Gryphons, but the Gaels Roote would find her way into the try zone to make it 19-10 after another successful conversion kick by McEwen. Devon Keys scored a second try for the Gryphons, but after a missed conversion the score finished with the Gaels on top 19-15 for the championship win. Roote led the offence, scoring ten points with two tries on the day for the Gaels. Corrigan scored the third try for Queen’s and McEwen had two conversions giving Queen’s 19 points for the day.
