HEAD COACH
SEASON REVIEW
DAVE WILSON Wilson is in his 32nd season as head coach (33rd with the program). Named OUA East coach of the year, Wilson guided the Gaels to a program best record of 16-6 to claim the OUA East title and also registered career win 300. In the last 14 years, Wilson’s teams have competed for four OUA East Championships, won three OUA East Division Championships, one OUA Championship, and will be making their third CIS Championship appearance. He prides his program on being one that provides student-athletes with the best of both worlds; first rate academics and first rate basketball. Noted for his commitment to his athletes both on and off the court, Wilson feels that it is essential for athletes to know that the entire coaching staff is willing and able to help with matters relating to basketball, school, and life in general. Continuing to improve his coaching credentials, Wilson has accumulated an impressive background with Canada Basketball, in addition to his tenure at Queen’s: Assist. Coach, National Jr. Team – 4th place finish, World Championship (Thailand - 2009)

Wilson’s post-secondary education began at West Virginia University before transferring to Queen’s to complete a B.A., B.P.H.E., B.Ed. and an M.Ed. As an educator, he believes strongly in the value of a Queen’s education and the ability to combine schoolwork with the rigours of the varsity basketball program. He is extremely proud of the academic success of the players in the program, boasting a 100% graduation rate over his 32 years. Himself a former Gael, Wilson makes his home in Kingston with his wife, Laurie, and son, Tai. Career Record: 287-261 and 17-35
The Queen’s Women’s Basketball team finished the season as the OUA finalists after taking the OUA East division title and falling to Windsor in the OUA Championship game. The Gaels were ranked No.10 in the county heading into post-season play, after finishing the regular season with a 16-6 record and closing out on a seven game winning streak. The women boasted a home record of 9-2 and were 7-4 on the road. The Gaels started off slow but managed to take a 6-3 record heading into the winter break. Early January was a tough schedule for Queen’s as they lost two home games to Ryerson (70-67) and Toronto (70-56), and lost a heart breaker to Carleton on the road (57-55). Queen’s followed up the tough loss at the Raven’s Nest by upsetting Ottawa the following night (57-46) in overtime on January 25th. The loss to Carleton would be their last of the regular season. The team secured first place in the OUA East, ahead of season rivals Ottawa and Carleton. This rank gave them a bye in the first round of the playoffs. They faced the Toronto Varsity Blues in their OUA East semifinal matchup at the Athletics and Recreation Center in Kingston. The team came out victorious with a 67-56 win over Toronto. The Gaels then hosted the Carleton Ravens for the East Division title on March 1st in front of over 800 fans on home court at Queen’s. The Gaels took down Carleton in overtime 62-58 to advance to the OUA Championship for the first time in 11 years. In Windsor against the No. 1 Lancers the Gaels fell behind early and could not stage a comeback, finishing the season as the OUA silver medal winners. The leading regular season scorers for the Gaels were Jenny Wright (13.0), Liz Boag (12.0), Gemma Bullard (11.4) and Robyn Pearson (10.0). Pearson was the leading rebounder averaging 9.7 per game. The season has been a program best for the Gaels in terms of regular season wins tying their franchise mark of 16 set back in 2003-04 when the team went 16-6 as well.
Assistant Coaches
JAMES BAMBURY James Bambury was named Assistant Coach of the Queen’s Gaels Women’s Basketball team on August 20, 2012. Bambury, 30, spent the previous two seasons as the Head Coach of the women’s basketball team at Royal Military College. This marks a return to Queen’s for Bambury, who spent three seasons as a guard on the Gaels’ men’s basketball team, from 2000-03. Prior to joining RMC, Bambury coached in England. He was the Head Women’s Basketball Coach of Leeds Metropolitan University from 2008-10, where his squad won the British Universities and Colleges Premier North Division championship, and was runner-up in the national final.
BOB FREEMAN Freeman is in his 4th season on the bench bringing a wealth of basketball experience. Now a retired teacher, he has coached over 35 years with great success, at Bayridge SS in both the boys and girls programs. Also heavily involved in the Kingston Impact Club program (both as coach & executive), Freeman brings a passion and commitment to the game that has definitely benefitted the Queen’s program. He makes his home in Kingston with his wife Beth.

No. 10 Gaels Head To OUA East Finals After 67-56 Victory Over Toronto
OUA East crown goes to No.10 Queen’s in 6258 OT win over Carleton
KINGSTON, Ont. (February 22, 2014) - The No.10ranked Queen’s women’s basketball team is heading to the OUA East finals after defeating the Toronto Varsity Blues 67-56 on Saturday night in Kingston Ontario.
KINGSTON, Ont. (March 1, 2014) - The No. 10 Queen’s women’s basketball team claimed the title of OUA East champions and a place at the CIS National Championships. The Gaels defeated the Carleton Ravens 62-58 in a thrilling overtime victory in front of a packed house of 802 at the Athletics and Recreation Centre on Saturday night in Kingston.
The electric atmosphere in the Athletics and Recreation Centre really set the pace for this OUA East semifinal matchup. It was a high-energy, defense-oriented game for the full 40 minutes. In the first quarter Queen’s caused eight Toronto turnovers and held a 19-10 lead at the start of the second. Toronto rallied back by getting to the line (6-6), picking up their defensive energy and scoring off of forced Gael turnovers. Jenny Wright (Kingston, Ont.) was the story of the first half for Queen’s by keeping her team in the game offensively amidst Toronto’s tenacious defensive efforts. She connected on some difficult takes to the hoop and finished the half leading all scorers with 13 points. Going into the second half, Queen’s held the lead 38-34. Jill Stratton of Toronto sparked the Varisty Blues in the third quarter by hitting loud back-to-back transition three’s and shifting momentum to their favour. The Gaels were composed, they were tough and they got the job done on the defensive end. Throughout the second half, Queen’s was able to string together great defensive efforts, which lead to good offensive shot opportunities. Toronto could not weather the tri-colour storm. Liz Boag (Kingston, Ont.) was the leading scorer of the game with 21 points, with 12 of those coming from three-point land. Wright was right behind her with 16 points, and Gemma Bullard (Guelph, Ont.) added 11 of her own. Alicia Van Kampen of Toronto was the high scorer for her team with 17 points, followed by Jill Stratton who added 15.
The key from the beginning of the game was that it was going to be a battle of the boards because Queen’s and Carleton have been known for their ability to crash the glass all season long. This proved pivotal as both teams struggled to find the bottom of the net early on, with Queen’s only leading 12-9 at the end of the first quarter. At the half, the score was stuck at a mere 26-25 in favour of the Gaels, but that was not reflective of the effort being put forth on both ends of the court by both teams. To say the game was aggressive would be an understatement. The on-ball pressure was relentless. Elizabeth Roach of Carleton led all scorers at the half with 16 points, hitting, back-to-back threes early in the second. Jenny Wright (Kingston, Ont.) was able to navigate around the defensive pressure to tally 11 points by half. Three point shooting woes continued for the Gaels throughout the third and fourth quarters, but defensive solidarity and offensive execution at important moments gave Queen’s the lead down the stretch of the fourth. A turning point in the final minutes of regulation was when Wright grabbed an offensive rebound off of a free-throw and finished for two tying the game up. Queen’s led 48-45 with four seconds left, just after Liz Boag (Kingston, Ont.) went 1-2 from the line. After two consecutive attempts to inbound the ball and having Queen’s knock it out of bounds, Carleton secured it inbounds and McKenzie Sigurdson drained a deep three with 0.4 seconds left on the clock to force overtime.
Roach opened up the extra quarter with a backdoor layup for the Ravens, quickly followed by a lay-in by Wright at the other end. The teams continued to exchange points while maintaining their suffocating defensive pressure. With under a minute to go, Roach hit one of her two from the free-throw line to tie the game at 55. The gym was deafening with an ecstatic standing crowd, cheering on the Queen’s women in unison, with the octaves increasing with the seconds winding down. Queen’s had a 3-point lead with less than 30 seconds on the clock. After being beat one-onone by the fifth year Roach only a few possessions earlier, Emily Hazlett (Fredericton, N.B.) of Queen’s found herself in the exact same defensive situation with 20 seconds left. Without hesitation, the second year defensive dynamo lunged and stole the basketball, connecting for two at the other end and putting the Gaels up by five. The Raven’s did not let down as Lindsay Shotbolt responded with a three-pointer with only nine seconds remaining. The Raven’s needed to foul and sent Meaghan MacDougall (Martintown, Ont.) to the line. She hit both freethrows to put Queen’s up 62-58 to seal the win. “I give a lot of credit to the team, our players never quit. They just went out there and played hard and did the things that we really wanted to do against Carleton and I couldn’t be more proud,” said head coach Dave Wilson after the win. “I know the crowd support means a lot to the players because that gets them energized and it really is a sixth person on the floor. Our fans have been great all year long and I’m really glad we could reward them with a win.” Wright led the Gaels with 18 points, followed by Boag who added 15. Roach of the Ravens led all scorers with 27 points, and Shotbolt finished with 10 points and 13 rebounds.

No. 10 Gaels drop OUA Championship 73-48 to No. 1 Lancers WINDSOR, Ont. (March 8, 2014) – The No. 10 Queen’s Gaels fell to the No. 1 Windsor Lancers 73-48 in the OUA Championship in Windsor, Ontario on Saturday night. The Lancers proved why they are the No. 1 team in the nation opening up with a 9-0 lead to start the game against the Gaels. Turnovers hurt Queen’s early with Windsor connecting off of their fast-break opportunities. Jenny Wright (Kingston, Ont.) got the Gaels offensive charge
started in the latter half of the quarter finishing with four points in the opening frame. The Gaels went into the second down 23-7. The second quarter had the Gaels come out hot. They scored the quarters first five points thanks to Liz Boag (Kingston, Ont.) and Wright. Boag was two for two from beyond the arc in the quarter as the Gaels pushed back against the Lancers. Wright was the hot hand for Queen’s with 10 of the Gaels first 15 points. Jessica Clemencon proved to be a tough matchup for the Gaels as she added 11 in the second quarter for Windsor who opened up their 16-point lead once again. The Gaels fought hard in the quarter and equaled the Lancers in points with 20 for each team but found themselves down 43-27 at half. The Lancers opened up the third on a 10-2 run and lead by as much as 24 in the quarter. The Gaels stayed strong on the defensive end after that however, as Windsor added only one more point to the Gaels five to close out the quarter. Lancer shooters went cold in frame hitting only 27.8% of their shots but the Gaels also struggled going 3-15 from the field.
After going down with an injury near the end of the third, Wright returned to the game for the Gaels in the fourth quarter. Boag and Wright each had five in the quarter for Queen’s but the lead was too large to make any sort of comeback. Windsor outscored Queen’s in the final quarter 19-14 to seal the win and the OUA title, their second straight championship and fifth in the last six years. Langlois was named player of the game and finished with 25 points and six rebounds for the Lancers. The Gaels were led offensively by Boag and Wright who each had 17 points in the loss for Queen’s. Windsor had the advantage in points in the paint 34-18, points off turnovers 14-7 and fast break points 6-0. “We’ll take that as a learning experience,” said Gaels head coach Dave Wilson after the game. “We know that we didn’t start the game well as we wanted to but going forward we have a game on Friday and we can use what we learned here today to hopefully be much sharper when we start the game Friday.”

Gaels Lose Second Straight On The Road
TORONTO - On Friday afternoon the Gaels lost 68-33 to the defending tournament champions, the University of Saskatchewan, at the Mattamy Athletic Centre.
WATERLOO, Ont. (November 15, 2013) - Queen’s women’s basketball (2-3) suffered a tough loss to the Laurier Golden Hawks (4-1) on the road, losing the contest 66-62.
WINDSOR, Ont. (November 9, 2013) - The Queen’s Gaels (2-2) fell to the No.2 ranked Windsor Lancers (3-1) 82-56 on Saturday night at the St. Denis Centre in Windsor.
Laurier was off to an early lead on their home court, outscoring the visiting Gaels 22-14 in the first quarter. Queen’s regrouped in the second and took control of the pace of the game leading the Hawks 33-31 at half time. The Gaels were consistent from the floor and aggressive in their play through the last two quarters of action, but were unable to close out Laurier in the fourth quarter. Liz Boag (Kingston, Ont.) of the Gaels had a standout performance, finishing the game with 17 points and going three for three from beyond the arc in 25 minutes of play.
The Gaels travelled to Windsor to play the Lancers after a tough loss to the Western Mustangs Friday night. Queen’s kept pace with the defending CIS champs up until half, only trailing the veteran team 34-26 at the break. The relentless Lancer defensive pressure picked up in the third and fourth quarter causing the Gaels to accumulate 27 turnovers in the contest. 34% shooting from the floor in the second half was not enough to keep Queen’s in the game, leading to the final score of 82-56.
The Gaels had no answer for the Huskies who went 18 for 20 from the free throw line and caused 29 Gael turnovers. Emily Hazlet lead the Queens with 9 points. Dalyce Emmerson of Saskatchewan finished with 10 points and 11 rebounds on the night.

QUEEN’S GAELS - WOMEN’S BASKETBALL MEDIA NOTES - 2013-14 18
CONFERENCE CHAMPIONS: 1935 1948 1952 1961 1970 2001
OVER 100 YEARS OF WOMEN’S BASKETBALL AT QUEEN’S Queen’s Women’s Basketball celebrated 100 years in the fall of 2010 and are currently playing in their 103rd season. The December 1, 1910 issue of the Queen’s Journal reported on the first ever game for women’s basketball at Queen’s:
“Tuesday, the 22nd, was a notable day in the history of basketball in the University, for on that day, for the first time, the Ladies’ Basketball team played before the public view. A very large crowd turned out to see the game, including several hundred ladies. It quite beautified our old gym, when the rows of bright faces and bright colours were arranged around the side. The YMCA were our girls’ first victims. Mr. Bews has been boasting for some time about his team, but we thought he was simply indulging in pleasantry. However, our eyes were opened. The girls played beautiful ball. Short, fast passing, quick running, hard checking, and some really splendid shooting, marked the game.” Queen’s won its first game 11-5. The players were Miss Edna Henderson, Miss Merry, Miss Nash, Miss O’Hearn, and Miss Warren.
INTERCOLLEGIATE BASKETBALL LEAGUE - 1922 The women’s intercollegiate basketball league was started in 1922. Three teams were in the league, Queen’s, Varsity and McGill. Each year the teams competed for the “Bronze Baby”, the original trophy was lost in a shipwreck on its way from England.
BRONZE BABY CONFERENCE CHAMPIONS Queen’s Bronze Baby Champions (Prior to National Championship donation in 1972) 1934-35, 1947-48, 1951-52, 1961-62, 1969-70 In 1934-35 Queen’s won the intercollegiate championship (The Bronze Baby) for the first time since its donation in 1922. (Queen’s Journal Vol.75: January 30, 1948, No.29)
OUA CONFERENCE CHAMPIONS The team had its most successful season since the inception of the OWIAA (now OUA) in 1971. Despite a third place finish in the OUA East division the Gaels knocked off Toronto in the quarter-finals, 89-72, Laurentian in the semifinals, 61-57, enroute to the provincial championship over McMaster 73-63. Co-captain Jacqueline Beaudoin led the way with 80 points for the Gels in the three games combined proving why she was selected as an OUA All-Star. 2000-01
