MATT HOLMBERG Holmberg is in his seventh year with the team, and fourth as head coach. This year he led the Gaels to their best regular season record in program history, finishing 20-4-2 for 42 points and a third place finish in the OUA. The Gaels knocked off Windsor, Guelph and Western to win their second championship in three years. In the 2010-11 season, Holmberg guided the Gaels to their eighth OUA Championship and were the bronze medalists at the CIS Championship. In their run to Queen’s first OUA title in 32 years, the Gaels knocked off three nationally-ranked opponents, winning all five of their games in overtime. Included in that run, Holmberg coached the Gaels to victory in the longest game in collegiate hockey history, a six overtime victory over the Guelph Gryphons in Game 1 of the OUA Championship. In his first year at the helm, Holmberg guided the Gaels to a 19-5-3 regular season record. That accomplishment helped Holmberg earn the honour of being named the OUA coach of the year. In addition, he was selected to assist coaching a team of OUA all-stars, which included three Gaels, in a game against the Canada’s U18 team. Holmberg was named the OUA women’s hockey coach of the year in 2009-2010 and the Fox 40 OUA male coach of the year in 2010 2011. The Pembroke, Ontario native graduated from Queen’s Law in 1997.

The Gaels women’s hockey team finished their regular season with a program record 20 wins topping their season best mark set in 2010-11. The Gaels finished out the regular season in third place in the OUA with a 20-4-2 record. The team was ranked in the CIS Top 10 rankings for all 16 weeks reaching as high as four and closed out the year as the No. 7 team in the country. In the playoffs, after losing their first game in their OUA quarter-final to Windsor, the Gaels bounced back with two wins at home, including a 6-1 win to clinch the series in a game where twin sisters Morgan and Brittany McHaffie (Guelph, Ont.) combined for eight points. The Gaels took on No. 6 Guelph, sweeping the series and handing the Gryphons their first loss since Nov. 11 in the process. In the OUA Championship series the Gaels were the top seed hosting the No. 10 Western Mustangs. The series held up to the rivalries standards and after taking game one in London 4-0, the Gaels were able to hold on to a one-goal lead later and secure the OUA Championship with a 5-4 victory, marking the second time in three seasons that Queen’s has won the Judy McCaw Memorial Cup. Queen’s has been led by twin sisters Morgan and Brittany McHaffie (Guelph, Ont.) in the playoffs. The two have combined for 22 points in 13 games after Morgan missed the Gaels first game of the playoffs. Morgan also had a strong regular season leading the team in points with 33. Other offensive threats include Taryn Pilon (Peterborough, Ont.) who finished eighth in the OUA in scoring and OUA Second Team All-Star, defence Katie Duncan (Kitchener, Ont.), who finished 17th in the OUA in scoring this season. Veterans Kristin Smith (Toronto) and Shawna Griffin (Calgary) join an emerging young core that includes OUA All-Rookie Alisha Sealey (Elora, Ont.) and the Gaels leading goal scorer Courtenay Jacklin (Regina) as offensive threats for Queen’s. In net, Melanie Dodd-Moher (Stittsville, Ont.) and Karissa Savage (Calgary) have been steallar all season long splitting duties. Dodd-Moher and Savage finished the regular season with nearly identical sparkling stats of a 1.62 goals against average, 0.931 save percentage and a 1.52 goals against average and 0.932 save percentage respectively.

Nine Gaels enter the CIS Tournament as holdovers from the team that went to the championship in 2010-11. Mel Dodd-Moher started all three games for the Gaels in 2010-11 and was named a Championship All-Star after posting two wins and a shutout. PLAYOFF GAME BY GAME Lancers take game one with 6-1 win over No. 7 Gaels

No. 7 Gaels force deciding game with 3-2 win over Windsor

WINDSOR, Ont. (February 14, 2013) - The No. 7 Queen’s Gaels opened up their OUA best-of-three playoff series with the Windsor Lancers in Windsor on Thursday night where the Lancers bested Queen’s 6-1.

KINGSTON, Ont. (February 16, 2013) - An offensively charged second period led the No. 7 Queen’s Gaels to a 3-2 win over the Windsor Lancers in OUA playoff action at the Cataraqui Community Centre Saturday night.

Kristin Smith (Toronto) scored the lone goal for the Gaels while Windsor was led by three point nights from both Courtney Spoors (Kingsville, Ont.) and Kayla Dodson (Windsor, Ont.).

Bree Polci (London, Ont.) opened the scoring for the Lancers with a powerplay goal at the 10:39 mark of the first period assisted by Erinn Noseworthy and Candace Kourounis (Markham, Ont.) putting Windsor up 1-0. The Gaels out shot the Lancers 14-13 in the first period, but were unable to get on the board.

The Lancers used home ice to their advantage early with a goal from Spoors only 3:17 into the opening period to give the number six seed the upper hand. Candice Chevalier (Essex, Ont.) scored a shorthanded marker just over four minutes later and Spoors followed with a shorthanded goal of her own to give Windsor a comfortable 3-0 lead after one. Queen’s was outshot 17-9 in the period. Windsor kept the offence coming in the second period tallying three goals once more and chasing Gaels netminder Mel Dodd-Moher (Stittsville, Ont.) from the goal. The Gaels outshot Windsor in the final period 16-6 but could not get back into the game. Smith scored a power play goal 5:40 into the period from Brittany McHaffie (Guelph, Ont.) and Marlee Fisher (Kingston, Ont.) bringing the game to its 6-1 final score. Karissa Savage (Calgary) and Dodd-Moher combined for 28 saves while Karlyle Robinson (St. Catharine’s, Ont.) stopped 30 of 31 shots for the win. Queen’s went 1-5 on the power play but allowed two shorthanded goals. The Lancers were 0-2 on the man-advantage on the night.

Windsor carried their 1-0 lead into the second period. Kristin Smith (Toronto) evened the score with a goal for the Gaels at the 1:09 mark of the second period; Morgan McHaffie (Guelph, Ont.) and Alisha Sealey (Elora, Ont.) had assists. Katie Duncan (Kitchener, Ont.) added a powerplay goal for the Gaels at 9:07 with assists from Marlee Fisher (Kingston, Ont.) and Taryn Pilon (Peterborough, Ont.). Less than two minutes later, Sealey added another powerplay goal for Queen’s with an assist from Chantal Morais (Guelph, Ont.) putting the Gaels up 3-1 to end the second period. Kourounis added a second goal for the Lancers at the 5:31 mark of the third period bringing the Gaels’ lead to just one goal. The Gaels were able to hold on to the 3-2 lead bringing the best of three game series to a 1-1 tie. Karissa Savage (Calgary, Ont.) had 31 saves for Queen’s, while Windsor’s Karlyle Robinson (St. Catharine’s, Ont.) stopped 22 shots. The Gaels were 2-6 on the power play, while the Lancers were 1-6.

The Gaels handed No. 6 Guelph their first loss since Nov.

No. 7 Gaels hand No. 6 Gryphons their first loss since November 11 with 4-2 win in game one GUELPH, Ont. (February 20, 2013) -- The No. 7 Queen’s Gaels beat the No. 6 Guelph Gryphons 4-2 on Wednesday night in Guelph to take a 1-0 series lead in their OUA semifinal match. The loss marks the first time since November 11 that the Gryphons have suffered a loss. Mel Dodd-Moher (Stittsville, Ont.) had a strong night between the pipes for Queen’s stopping 31 of the Gryphons 33 shots on goal and Morgan McHaffie (Guelph, Ont.) scored a goal and added an assist. Mid-way through the first Shawna Griffin (Calgary) fired a shot through to the net and Allie Biglieri (Toronto) picked up a rebound at the side of the goal and beat Nehring on the short side to give Queen’s a 1-0 lead. Kristin Smith (Toronto) added the second assist for the Gaels. Only 2:30 into the second Taryn Pilon (Peterborough, Ont.) put the Gaels up 2-0. Pilon fired a shot from the high slot that fooled Nehring as the puck found it’s way through the Goaltender and into the Gryphon net. Guelph took control offensively and at the 6:18 mark it was Christine Grant (Mississauga, Ont.) whose shot found its way off a Gaels defender and past Dodd-Moher to cut the Gaels lead in half. Queen’s got in penalty trouble giving the Gryphons a four minute power play of their own where Guelph was able to capitalize. The puck came to Michelle Sabourin (Pickering, Ont.) in the slot whose wrist shot beat DoddMoher to tie the game at 2-2. Only 30 seconds later the Gaels responded when Mary Coughlin (Amherstburg, Ont.) took a shot from just off the boards that traveled through a crowd to beat Nehring.

Three minutes after that Brittany McHaffie was knocked down in the slot and her sister Morgan picked up the loose puck and beat Nehring to close out the Gryphons and give Queen’s a 4-2 win. Dodd-Moher picked up her first win of the playoffs stoping 31 shots while Nehring made 20 saves in the loss.

No. 7 Gaels advance to OUA Championship after 3-1 win over Guelph to sweep series KINGSTON, Ont. (February 22, 2013) - The No. 7 Queen’s Gaels are headed back to the OUA Championship after defeating the No. 6 Guelph Gryphons 3-1 on Friday night in Kingston to sweep their best-of-three series.

McHaffie’s combine for eight points as No. 7 Gaels advance to OUA semi-final with 7-1 win over Lancers KINGSTON, Ont. (February 17, 2013) - The No. 7 Queen’s Gaels closed out their best-of-three series against the Windsor Lancers on Sunday with a 7-1 win, advancing to the OUA semi-final with a two games to one series win. Morgan and Brittany McHaffie (Guelph, Ont.) combined for eight points in the win. The Gaels scored five times in the second period, including three in less than a three minute span. Brittany McHaffie had a hat-trick while her sister Morgan McHaffie had a five point game with one goal and four assists. It was Windsor that opened the scoring in the first period as Savage could not find the puck at the side of the goal and a scramble ensued, Caitlin Connell (Edmonton, Alta.) buried the puck as it bounced out in front the Gaels net for a 1-0 lead. The Gaels offence came alive in period number two, only 31 seconds in Pilon and Morgan McHaffie broke in and got the puck in front of the Lancer goal. After a few shots, Brittany McHaffie came into the play at the side of the goal and forced the puck past Robinson to draw even. Morgan and Pilon drew the assists. Courtenay Jacklin (Regina, Sask.) gave the Gaels their first lead of the game a few minutes later. Jacklin broke in on the right wing and wristed a shot on net that Robinson had trouble with. The Lancer goaltender was unable to get a good piece of the shot and the puck slipped by her and into the net. Verbeek added the assist for the Gaels. With 3:26 remaining in the period a Katie Duncan (Waterloo, Ont.) shot top shelf over the glove of Robinson put the Gaels ahead by two. Morgan and Brittany McHaffie each scored before the period was out to put the Gaels ahead 5-1. Mary Coughlin (Amherstburg, Ont.) scored her first of the playoffs and Brittany McHaffie completed her hat-trick to close out the game giving the Gaels a 7-1 win. Queen’s defenders stepped up their game late as in the dying moments the blueliners were blocking shots. The offence responded and the Gaels stayed strong on their puck possession getting the play deep into the Gryphon zone. With 28 seconds left Griffin sealed the win for Queen’s with a power play goal, sending the Gaels to the OUA Championship. Dodd-Moher made 21 saves for the win while Nehring stopped 37 in a losing effort.

Shawna Griffin (Calgary) and Morgan McHaffie (Guelph, Ont.) each had a goal and an assist while Mel DoddMoher (Stittsville, Ont.) was the star in net stopping 21 shots for the win. Guelph found themselves in penalty trouble again and the Gaels went up on a five on three advantage. Sealey stepped in from the point on the half boards and made a slick pass through the blue ice to a wide open Chantal Morais (Guelph, Ont.) for an easy goal to put Queen’s up 1-0. Special teams continued to be the story of the game in the second period as the Gryphons went on the offensive with a power play early, Jessica Pinkerton (Oshawa, Ont.) fired a shot from the slot that deflected off the post and wide. After a face-off win in the Gaels zone, the puck made its way to Emily Corbett (Toronto) whose point shot was stopped by Dodd-Moher but Christine Grant (Mississauga, Ont.) put away the rebound to tie the game at 1-1. PLAYOFF GAME BY GAME CONT’D... Savage gets the shutout, Pilon with two goals as Gaels win 4-0 over Mustangs to take game one LONDON, Ont. (February 27, 2013) - The Queen’s Gaels took game one of their best-of-three OUA Championship series beating the Western Mustangs 4-0 on Wednesday night in London. Karissa Savage (Calgary) stopped 26 shots for the shutout and Taryn Pilon (Peterborough, Ont.) scored two goals, including the winner. Queen’s came out firing in the first period outshooting the Mustangs 22 to 11. Gaels captain Kristin Smith (Toronto) started things off with a few great chances on the backhand but couldn’t get the puck past Western starting goalie and OUA All-Star Kelly Campbell (St. Thomas, Ont.). After the Gaels were unable to beat Campbell on a power play, Smith nabbed a loose puck off the boards and fired a shot on net. Campbell let loose a big rebound out front and Pilon shovelled the puck past the Western goaltender to give the Gaels a 1-0 advantage. Danielle Girard (Sarnia, Ont.) put the Gaels up 2-0 early in the second period with her first of the post-season coming on the power play. After Kingston native Marlee Fisher kept the puck in at the blue line, Brittany McHaffie (Guelph, Ont.) circled the net and flipped the puck out front into a crowd, Girard got her stick on it and beat Campbell giving the Gaels a 2-0 lead. The two teams tightened up their defensive play in the second period as the shot count went from 33 total in the first to only 15 in the second. Queen’s defensive play was strong, keeping the Mustang shots away form the net while blocking everything they could. In the final period the Gaels once again got on the scoreboard early. Pilon managed to get her stick on a point shot from OUA All-Star Katie Duncan (Kitchener, Ont.) putting the Gaels up with a comfortable 3-0 lead. Western finally started to get some momentum going in the third with a few power play opportunities but were unable to beat Savage. With the Mustangs on the power play they pulled their goalie late in the game. Gaels forward and OUA All-Star Morgan McHaffie (Guelph, Ont.) got to centre ice and sealed the victory for the Gaels with an empty net shorthanded goal to make it 4-0. Savage stopped 26 shots for the win, her third of the playoffs.

Champions! Gaels down Mustangs 5-4 for OUA Title KINGSTON, Ont. (March 1, 2013) -The Queen’s Gaels women’s hockey team was able to complete the sweep of the rival Mustangs and claim the Judy McCaw Memorial Cup and OUA Championship title. The Gaels were diligent offensively wasting no time firing shots on the Western goaltenders and finding the back of the net, outshooting the Mustangs 45-18--with 19 of those shots coming in the first. Morgan McHaffie (Guelph, Ont.) got the first good chance for the Gaels early in the first period. The Guelph native stepped over the blue line on a two-on-one and fired a wrist shot just wide of the low corner of the net. Queen’s continued their offensive pressure with defenseman Danielle Girard (Sarnia, Ont.) showing her offensive touch, putting three chances on Mustang’s goalie Kelly Campbell (St. Thomas, Ont.) in the opening ten minutes. A defensive breakdown for the Gaels a few minutes later resulted in a two-on-none for the Mustangs. Stacey Scott (London, Ont.) went cross bar and in on Gaels starting goaltender Mel Dodd-Moher (Stittsville, Ont.) for a 1-0 Western lead. Queen’s caught a break shortly after with Western recording their second and third penalties of the game to give the tricolour a minute of 5-on-3 action. On the power play, a beautiful set-up by the Gaels Katie Duncan (Kitchener, Ont.) from the point on a slap-pass went to a wide open Girard who made a great play to deflect the hard pass up off the cross bar and in. Just after their power play ended the Gaels struck again with Kristin Smith (Toronto) netting a deflection from a Mary Coughlin (Amherstburg, Ont.) shot. A Casey Rosen (Toronto) interference penalty for Western closed out the first frame, with the Gaels leading 2-1. With the Mustangs suffering an injury to starting goalie Campbell after the first, Olivia Ross (Huntsville, Ont.) took the helm heading into the final two periods of the door-die game. The Gaels wasted no time firing shots on Olivia Ross, with Brittany McHaffie (Guelph, Ont.) buring her fourth goal of the playoffs off a rebound shot from Girard under 30 seconds into the period. Girard was named the Gaels player of the game for her efforts, finishing the game with two points--a goal and assist.

Three minutes later Gaels rookie forward Courtenay Jacklin (Regina) was able to find the twine off a snapshot from a Chelsey Verbeek (Beiseker, Alta.) pass to give Queen’s a commanding 4-1 lead early in the second period. Despite the two early goals from the Gaels, Western was able to regain some momentum and rally behind their goalie change. A Mustangs power play five minutes into the period sparked some Western offence, with Stacey Scott (London, Ont.) netting a rebound goal past DoddMoher. A Duncan penalty allowed the Mustangs to score their second power play goal with Cassidy Gosling (London, Ont.) netting the puck as the result of a scramble which left Dodd-Moher out of position. The goal gave Western some much needed momentum heading into the third trailing Queen’s 4-3. Early in the third the Gaels found themselves on a power play as the result of a Kryshanda Green (Caledon, Ont.) face-off interference penalty. Despite not being able to convert on the power play the Gaels were able to find the score-sheet early in the third with Taryn Pilon (Peterborough, Ont.) capitalizing on a rebound over a sprawled out Ross with an assist coming from Brittany McHaffie. Unfortunately for the Gaels they found themselves in the box again with Verbeek recording a minor for hooking. On the power-play rookie forward Katelyn Gosling (London, Ont.) was able to convert, netting a slap hot past a screened Dodd-Moher. An exciting final five minutes of regulation ensued, with Western turning up the tempo and keeping the puck deep in Gaels territory. The Queen’s defenders were able to stand tall however, led by veteran net minder DoddMoher, and close out the game with a 5-4 victory. The victory marks the second Judy McCaw Memorial Cup for the Gaels in the past three years, with their last one coming in the 2010-2011 season. The Gaels veteran goaltender Mel Dodd-Moher, who shared her duties this season with fellow veteran Karissa Savage (Calgary), had the following to say about Queen’s impressive home victory. “Western gave us all they had. They could have just given in, but they didn’t, so it was a tough game for sure. In the last few minutes I just knew I had great teammates and we could pull out the win.”
