HEAD COACH

SEASON REVIEW

DAN VALLEY

Under the guidance of first-year head coach Dan Valley, the Queen’s Gaels turned heads early in the season as they pushed the defending OUA champion Guelph Gryphons to the brink in Guelph losing only on a try and conversion in the final moments of the match.

Valley led the Gaels to an OUA silver medal in his first year as head coach. He was the head coach of the Rugby Canada U18 Women’s 15’s program, and was also a Technical Lead for the Canada 7’s NextGen program in Ontario. Valley was an assistant coach with the McMaster women’s program that won a CIS Gold in 2015 and his high school program (Oakville Trafalgar) is regarded as one of the most successful programs in Ontario, winning six provincial medals (three gold) since 2011. He holds a Master of Sport Coaching from the University of Queensland, a Master of Teaching from Griffith University, and a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) from the University of Western Ontario. Career Record OUA Playoff Overall Year School W-L-T W-L W-L-T 2017 Queen’s 2-2-0 2-1 4-3-0

From there the Gaels finished with wins over both Western and York before falling to McMaster at home by just seven points. Queen’s was a nationally ranked program all season and showed why in the OUA playoffs. They dismantled Trent in the OUA quarter-final 109-0, setting a team record for most points scored in a game, then headed to Hamilton and upset McMaster 20-15 in the semifinal. An OUA championship loss to Guelph closed out the season, but a handful of Gaels were recognized at the conference level for their efforts. Sophie de Goede was named the Shiels Rookie of the Year and joined fellow teammates Kara Gani and McKinley Hunt on the OUA All-Star team.

No.7 Gaels make final push but fall 21-15 to No.6 Marauders

OUA QF - Gaels advance to OUA semifinal with 109-0 win over Trent

GAME FLOW In the scorching September heat, the defence told the tale of this matchup. Both McMaster and Queen’s showed good open field tackling and pass breakups. In the end, it was the Marauder’s strong end-zone defence that kept them on top and ultimately won them the game.

GAME FLOW The Gaels proved to be much stronger and faster than the Excalibur, breaking tackles and beating defenders early and often. Sophie de Goede (Victoria) was the first to score, followed soon by Nadia Popov (Newmarket, Ont.).The Gaels also showed off their impressive defence, not allowing Trent to enter their zone for most of the opening half while controlling the majority of possession.

McMaster’s Khadija Brouilette scored the opening try, taking it up half the field by herself off a misplayed ball from the Tricolour. The Gaels responded by scoring two tries; Pippi McKay (Toronto) was the first to put the Gaels on the board, pushing in a short try, followed shortly by Harlee Bruce (Lakefield, Ont.). A missed conversion put Queen’s up five late in the first half. McMaster continued to push the pace as half-time neared. Maddie Seatle pushed through into the end-zone off a scrum in the Gaels territory. The Marauders entered the half leading 14-12. Early in the second half, McMaster’s Sara Svoboda pushed through the tough Gaels defence to pad their lead, 21-12. The Strong defensive play kept both teams scoreless through most of the second half until a penalty opportunity gave the Gaels a chance at redemption. Nadia Popov (Newmarket, Ont.) nailed the penalty goal, to put the Gaels within a try and conversion of taking a one-point lead. Entering injury time, the Gaels had a chance to tie it up, controlling the ball in McMaster’s zone. It was strong tackling and ruck control that held McMaster’s lead and won them the game with the defensive stand. BY THE NUMBERS 2 - Nationally ranked teams the No.7 Gaels and No.6 Marauders 3/3 - Sara Svoboda was perfect on conversions for McMaster 3-0 - McMaster remains undefeated through this season FINAL SAY “We’re right where we need to be, there are some things we can work on and improve, but with regards to any changes, no we’re right where we need to be. That game could’ve gone either way.”- Head Coach Dan Valley.

Mid-way through the first half, de Goede managed to score back to back tries, forcing her way past the Excalibur defence, who could not keep her down. In the final minutes of the opening half, de Goede punched in her fourth try of the game, as the Gaels managed to win a scrum near the Trent zone decisively. Not to be out-done, Popov outran the entire Excalibur defence again, to put up another try of her own. Trent was finally able to push the ball deep into the Gaels end as the final seconds ticked off the first half. Queen’s held their ground defensively though and managed to keep the Excalibur off the scoreboard. The Gaels started slowly in the second half, but a nice goal-line run by Lydia Salgo (Ottawa) put the Gaels on the board again. Even with a huge lead, the Gaels did not slow down. Emma Frey (Uxbridge, Ont), Jordi Di Nardo (Toronto), Molly Labenski (Oakville) each managed to get in the end-zone early in the second half. BY THE NUMBERS 109 - Points for Queen’s, the most scored in team history topping the 106 against Toronto in 2015 4 - Tries for Sophie de Goede, tying the amount she scored in the OUA regular season 14 - Straight wins for Queen’s over Trent 12 - Gaels scored tries on the night 46 - Points combined from Popov and de Goede

OUA SF - No.8 Gaels steal 20-15 win in Hamilton over No.7 McMaster, earn spots at OUA final and National Championship GAME FLOW The Gaels and Marauders met once in the OUA regular season with Queen’s losing a close tilt at home 21-15. The two nationally ranked programs went at it again, this time in the OUA semifinal with a trip to the OUA final and a berth in the U SPORTS national championship on the line. Queen’s was able to get the jump on the Marauders quickly as strong tackling lead to a Pippi McKay (Toronto) try giving Queen’s an early 5-0 lead. After McMaster was able to respond with a try of their own, Queen’s rookie sensation and two-time OUA athlete of the week Sophie de Goede (Victoria) broke through for another try after Erin Geddes (Lindsay, Ont.) was able to get the ball forward before dishing off to de Goede. The Gaels put a 10 point margin between themselves and the Marauders as 2016 U SPORTS All-Canadian Nadia Popov (Newmarket, Ont.) finished off a long sprint for a try giving Queen’s a 15-5 lead at the half. The home side came out strong in the second half as they were able to get themselves within five after a try in the 45th. Oct. 21, 2017 Guelph, Ont.

OUA FINAL - Women’s rugby finishes as OUA silver medalists GAME FLOW The Gaels and Gryphons traded possessions early with neither team able to move the ball out of the mid-field range. Guelph was the first team on the board as they put down the games first try and kicked a successful conversion for an early 7-0 lead. Queen’s was able to quickly respond just a few minutes later as a pile of Gaels helped to push McKinley Hunt (King City, Ont.) and the ball forward past the try line for five points. A tough conversion attempt was missed, and the Gaels were down just two. A big run set up another Guelph try and they followed up with a penalty goal kick for another three points to give them a 15-5 lead on the Gaels. Nadia Popov (Newmarket, Ont.) put together big runs for the Gaels, but they fell just short of the try line as the Guelph defence held strong. The Gryphons closed out the half with a try and a missed penalty goal kick and held a 22-5 lead over Queen’s after the first 40 minutes. In the second half, Queen’s was finally able to find their stride and put some points on the board. First, it was a great 20 metre run from Janna Slevinsky (Calgary) followed by Popov pushing through for a try. Popov connected on a conversion after her try to give the Gaels 12 straight points and cut the lead down to just five at 22-17. Guelph continued to challenge the Gaels defence who held strong at the goal line on multiple Gryphon offensive pushes. Guelph had trouble holding onto the ball and turned it over to Queen’s on the goal line twice. Queen’s couldn’t move the ball upfield, and eventually, the Gryphons were able to capitalize and take a 29-17 lead. The Gryphons closed it out from there and finished with a 43-17 win. FINAL SAY “I thought when we didn’t execute or were a little bit reluctant Guelph took advantage of those opportunities, and that’s what good teams do. Likewise, I thought when Guelph made some miscues we took advantage of those, and I thought we did a good job of staying with them through 60, but they got a bit of traction in the final 20 minutes. Now we’ll reload and get ready for the national championships.” - Head coach Dan Valley BY THE NUMBERS 2 - Nationally ranked programs the No.7 Gaels and No.2 Gryphons 1 - Trip to Lethbridge, Alberta for each team up next for the U SPORTS championship 7 - Points for Nadia Popov 3 - Gaels honoured as Sophie de Goede, Kara Gani and Hunt all received their All-Star certificates after the match
