As another athletic season draws to a close, I am very pleased to recognize and applaud the outstanding achievements of our many student-athletes, coaches, teams and programs this year. Congratulations on another great season of Gaels sport! In addition to tremendous individual and team performances over the past year, we were also able to celebrate two successful homecoming weekends which featured many of our studentathletes competing in front of alumni and fans alike. It was a true testament to the tricolour spirit! Later this spring, many of our student-athletes will graduate and depart University life to take on new and exciting challenges. As you transition into our newest alumni I wish you the best of luck. I also encourage you to remain engaged and to reach out in support of your respective programs and future Gaels as these athletes pursue the athletic legacy that you have helped inspire and forge.

The Colour Awards mark the official end to the athletic year and provide a wonderful opportunity to acknowledge and pay tribute to the efforts of our student-athletes and teams. Student-athletes at Queen’s continue to exhibit both academic and athletic excellence. Queen’s routinely places among the top five schools in Canada for the number of Academic All-Stars. This achievement combined with the on –field performance of our student athletes, truly makes our university the home of Scholars and Champions. Queen’s student athletes are also wonderful ambassadors for the University. Once again the VLC (Varsity Leadership Council) established a positive role in both the Queen’s and Kingston communities with their volunteerism and leadership. I would also like to thank the many coaches, support staff and volunteers who are integral to the exceptional experiences of our student-athletes and to the success of our programs. Congratulations to our student-athletes, coaches and team support staff on a successful 2013-14 athletic season. We are proud to come together as a Gaels community to recognize an exceptional season for Queen’s with many team and individual highlights. Congratulations to our provincial champions in women’s and men’s rugby, women’s fencing, cycling (4-peat) and to synchronized swimming on their national achievement. Congratulations also to our many medal-winning teams and athletes and to those that were recognized with provincial and national honours. My sincerest thank you to our dedicated coaches, team captains, support staff, alumni and team supporters who combine to create an environment supportive to our athletes who pursue excellence on the field of play and in the classroom. The Varsity Leadership Council (VLC) exists as a forum for varsity athletes to discuss the athletic experience at Queen’s, provide recommendations to Queen’s Athletics & Recreation and facilitate interaction between all varsity student-athletes. The council aims to promote a positive image of Queen’s student-athletes and build relations within Queen’s University and Kingston communities through volunteer opportunities and community programs. Finally, the VLC aims to foster a student-athlete culture through team building events and support at home competitions. This year was an especially great year for volunteer work by our athletes. The Queen’s baseball team had it’s best OUA season to date in 2013, posting a 9-15 record and a seventh place finish in the nine team league. A four win improvement from last season, the team has improved it’s overall winning percentage nearly .300 points since 2011.

Queen’s finished the season on a high note, winning five of their final seven contests. The team won the regular season series against three different opponents (McMaster, Toronto, Ryerson), defeated five of the league’s eight other teams at least once (McMaster, Toronto, Ryerson, Waterloo, Brock) and posted their first ever series sweep (Ryerson). Other notable team accomplishments included a .500 record at home park Megaffin Field (6-6), four shutouts, six error-free games and a 6-5 record in games decided by three runs or fewer. The team returns 20 players next season, and will look to make it’s first OUA playoff appearance.

After years of hopping around for a proper cheerleading gym, the team finally found their spiritual ‘home’ at the Kingston Elite Cheerleading Gym and never looked back as the team prepared to mount a serious assault towards claiming first spot at Nationals. Though the road to Nationals proved testy at times, the team kept its composure and hunger till the very end. At Nationals, spurred by an amazing crowd made up of friends, families and alumni, they put out one of their performances of a lifetime to set up a nail-biting finale. Though their efforts came close, the performance, class and heart won plenty of plaudits and many more new fans from the cheer community, making them a firm crowd favourite.

Other highlights included our the performance at the K-Rock Centre to clinch the Grand Champs title in front of a home crowd, the chance to welcome alumni from around the world during Homecoming and finally, the inclusion of four members on Team Canada for the upcoming ICU Worlds Cheerleading Championships.

The women’s curling team played in a University invitational bonspiel hosted by Brock University in St. Catharines in January to prepare for OUAs. After some close games the team finished winless but ready to improve at the OUA Championship. At the OUA’s in Guelph, the team finished in fifth spot out of an eight team pool. They had three easy wins over UOIT, McMaster, and Algoma along with an additional three very close games against Toronto, Guelph and Waterloo. The Gaels were also tied or ahead in each of these games at the half-way point. Queen’s finished with a final record of 3 wins, 4 losses.

For the men the OUA’s team of six players was named in December with final preparation in two “out-of-club” competitions (bonspiels) and in a weekly competitive Kingston Major League which ran December –March. The OUA team conducted themselves extremely well at the Championship event held in Guelph. However the results of only 2 wins together with 4 losses and not making the playoff round did in fact reflect the disappointing performance at key moments in matches against some formidable opponents.

This year the Gaels were able to secure their fourth consecutive University Cup race series and emerged victorious as Provincial Champions for the fourth year in a row. Etienne Moreau strongly placing first overall in the Men’s A division with 235 points, 53 points ahead of the nearest competitor. With additions to the Men’s A field of Cameron McPhaden, Brad Parsons and Jeff Waters all moving up from Men’s B last year, the riders placed fifth, and tied for eighth overall respectively. All members of the Men’s A team played a huge roll in securing the majority of the top ten positions. In the Women’s A division, Victoria Giangrande secured first place overall with a total of 210 points with a lead of 46 points. Haley Smith won both the races that she entered and displayed her expert skill level with significant margins over competitors again this year. Jess Metuzals placed eighth overall after moving up from Women’s B last year. Lastly the Men’s B field saw strong performance from Quinn Robertson who face tough competition from one of Guelph’s riders and placed second overall with 206 points out of 75 riders this season. Charles Giangrande placed fourth with a total of 119 points. On the Women’s B side, Andrea Burley placed first with a total of 225 points and a lead of 40 points over second place. Nichola Bendle placed third overall and placed first in her first ever mountain bike race this year.

The fastpitch team had a very strong season. Although their 9-11 record sets them below .500, 7 of the 11 regular season losses were decided by one run. Queen’s was a dominant force in every game, and a team not to be taken lightly. Newcomers to the team, Jaimie Laing and Jade Yerex contributed offensively and defensively to help the team qualify for the playoff weekend. This is the second straight year the team has qualified for the playoffs. With only one extra player on the bench, everyone battled the elements and rose to the occasion. Players were asked to play new positions and filled their roles with skill and positive attitudes.

During playoffs, the team hung tough through wet and cold conditions to advance out of the pool play and into the playoff rounds, improving their league result. A convincing 5 to 1 win over Guelph advanced Queen’s to play against the silver medalist Ottawa Gee Gees in the first round of the playoffs. Queen’s played an excellent game, but fell to the Gee Gees, ending the 2013 fastpitch season. With over half the players returning for the 2014 season, the fastpitch team is looking to improve upon their OIWFA 5th place finish.

In 2013-2014, Queen’s Fencing comprised 41 men and 40 women fencers, of which fully 61 held Canadian Fencing Federation competitive licences. The continuing and steady growth of the Queen’s club was matched this season by triumph for Women’s Fencing. With gold and silver medals in individual events, and gold and bronze medals in team relay events, the Gaels Women’s Fencing squad accumulated enough points to capture the OUA banner at the championships held at RMC February 8 and 9. Particularly strong was women’s sabre: gold medals in both individual and team relay events. Earlier in the season, the women’s squad medalled at every competition and contributed significantly to Queen’s second place in the RMC cup. Men’s Fencing experienced similar successes, though they missed their fourth consecutive OUA banner, taking second place to Carleton in the OUA Men’s Championship hosted by McMaster University, February 1-2, by capturing two medals in the three individual events, and three medals in the three team relay events. This proved a fitting close to a season in which the men took medals at every competition. The strong record Queen’s Fencing would not have been possible without the continued support of Fencing’s alumni and friends.

The field hockey team finished their season with a 3-54 record during regular season in 5th place in the OUA, after an outstanding push to make playoffs for the first time in six years.
RESULTS • 3-5-4 in OUA • Lost to Waterloo in OUA quarterfinal (5-4) • Beat St. Mary’s in 5th place game (2-1)
The team improved their +/- by +35 from the 2012/2013 season. They lost to CIS competitors, the Waterloo Warriors in a heartbreaking quarter final game in a match that they had the upper hand until the second half, with a final score of 5-4. To finish the season, the team played against St. Mary’s University, defeating the AUS representative 2-1.

Queen’s Figure Skating team started the season out finishing 3rd at the fall competition hosted by Carleton University. Eight skaters finished with medals and highlights came from Elizabeth Liao and Kelsey Valentine, (finishing first in the Creative Dance), Nicole Grenon and Anna Krzemien who finished first in the Senior Similar Pairs event. The Winter Competition hosted by Western had Queen’s skating to a 2nd place finish. Leading the way was rookie Kelsey Valentine, who finished first in three of her four events. Team co-captain and third year, Life Science major Elizabeth Liao also had a successful two-day event as she too placed first in the Bronze Rhythm dance with Valentine and Michaela Botsford and Jennifer Pickering. Liao also placed first in Creative Dance with Valentine and third in Gold Solo Free skate. Botsford who too had a strong showing placed second in her Senior Silver Solo dance event while Valentine finished strong placing first in Gold Solo Dance. David Alcoloumbre gave the Gaels their only 3rd place finish in the Men’s open solo free skate event. OUA’s were hosted by Ryerson and although Queen’s had overall improved skates, the judging didn’t show. Overall the team placed 4th. Only one first place finish was awarded to Queen’s and that was for the Bronze Rhythm skated by Elizabeth Liao, Kelsey Valentine, Michaela Botsford and Jennifer Pickering.

Both the men’s and women’s golf teams competed in six Invitational Tournaments including one hosted by Queen’s at the Amherstview Golf Club this season.

The women’s team were 3rd at Carleton and 4th at the home event while finishing 8th at Western. At the two day event hosted by Waterloo and Laurier at the Cambridge Golf Club the team ended in 8th. The last two invitationals were hosted by Guelph and Toronto where the team improved to 5th and 4th.

The men’s took 2nd at Carleton and Captain Russell Bowie scored a 5 under 65 for the individual Gold, the lowest score all season. At the Queen’s Invitational the team placed first overall. From there they were 8th at Western, 8th at Waterloo/Laurier, 4th at Guelph and 7th in Toronto. At the Waterloo/Laurier 2 day event rookie Cameron Lindsay shot 71 and 70 to tie for second overall picking up a silver medal. At the OUA’s representing the women’s team were Captain Jenn Kates, Alex Rawn, Mischie Ruscowski and Emily Welsh. The team finished in 7th. The men’s team was represented by Captain Russell Bowie, Cameron Lindsay, Jordan Gregoris, Echo Chan and Will Courchene and was played at the Grey Silo Golf Club in Waterloo and also hosted by Laurier. The team ended up tied for 7th as well.

2013 Men’s Lacrosse had their most successful season in the programs history, battling to a 7-2-1 record, they finished tied for second place in the East Division. Early on against Bishops, a top team in the league, Queen’s battled to an 8-7 win. The momentum carried throughout the season and right into playoffs. In the first round the team faced Trent. With the first birth to the National Championships in programs history on the line, the team stormed out to a 7-1 lead and won easily 11-8 in a rainy affair. Montreal and McGill played host for the Championship Weekend. Now nationally ranked Queens(6th) & Western(2nd) squared off for the most memorable game of the Championships. The Gaels led 2-1 after the 1st quarter, but Western roared back and took an 11-4 lead with 13 minutes left to play. The Gaels exploded for five goals down the stretch, then added a spectacular three in a 20-second span during the final minute of play to complete the comeback. With the win, they met McGill in the semifinal. The team struggled to match the same energy from the Western game and were eliminated.

The team lost three of their first five games, but improved steadily to peak at the end of the season. The highlights of the season were the last two games: a nail-biting 1211 last-minute loss to Toronto to decide the Eastern first place ranking and a 12-7 win over a surging Brock team. Overall, the regular season record was 6-4-1, an improvement over the previous year. player/coach Teresa Mayo improved by scoring 26 times, player/coach Jen Farrow had 14 goals and freshman attack Mackenzie Clemons was in hot pursuit with 13. The team notched 105 goals while giving up 93. Queen’s once again ranked 2nd in the OUA Eastern division behind Toronto. The Gaels hosted the 2013 OUA Championship this year, for the second time in a row. Queen’s played Laurier in the East-West crossover quarter-final game. Strong winds resulted in a squeaker of a loss and elimination from the medal rounds. The Gaels beat McMaster and lost to Toronto to close out the tournament. Mayo was an OUA All-Star and Championship Offensive MVP, while player/coach Mary Michelle Bolland was an OUA All-star as well for her defensive play.

The Nordic Ski team had a strong 2013-2014 season with approximately 20 athletes training six times per week starting in early October. Twelve of these athletes were selected for the race team after the winter training camp in January. The race team competed in seven different races over the course of four weekends on the road. With many rookies on the team results improved greatly as the season progressed. The team peaked well at the OUA championships, hosted by Nippising in North Bay. Katie Prufer had an exceptional 15th place finish in the women’s 10km skate race and finished 18th overall for the weekend. Brad Parsons also finished the season strong with a 14th place finish in the men’s 15km skate race. The women’s relay team had their best result in years finishing in 7th place and as the 4th university to cross the line. The team of Jessica Metuzals, and Prufer finished with an impressive combined time of 13:35.5, a minute behind the dominant Lakehead women’s teams.

The fall 2014 season was very successful for Queen’s Sailing. With the help of new Head Coach Rob Frost the team secured two national titles in Canada and maintained rankings in the United States. Sailors attended multiple regattas across the eastern seaboard in preparation for our main events of the season. Queen’s took 1st at the McGill Invitational this year. Other regular season highlights include 3rd place at MAISA Match Racing Champs and 5th at the Cornell Fall Open. During September the Gaels enjoyed 2 weeks of great guest coaching from Ken Dool, Canadian Sailing Team Head Coach.

The men’s squash team was strengthened considerably this year with the addition of two very good rookies, Lucas Ravkov (#4) and Matt Haffey (#6). Together with the returning players from the 2012-13 season (Mo Hamour (#1), Alex Ford (#2), Alex Cormier (#3), Theo Petropolis (#5), Kyle Boynton (#7), Rishi Mihda (#8), Wesley Cranston (#9), Patrick Livingston (#10) and Sam Yeon(#11)), the men’s team had a very successful season in the Jesters University Squash League. Queen’s dominated the east division and came third in the crossover tournament. As a result, Queen’s is seeded third going into the Jesters Squash Championships which takes place in March.

Despite missing #2 player, Alex Ford, at the OUA’s, Queen’s achieved a very satisfying bronze medal finish behind Western and McMaster. For his outstanding play at the #1 position, Mo Hamour was named to the OUA All-Star Team for the second year in a row. In the fall, the men also participated in the Black Knight Squash Team Tournament in Toronto against McMaster, Toronto and Waterloo. Queen’s won the inaugural tournament in 2009 and managed to repeat that performance this year with decisive wins against McMaster in the semi-finals and Toronto in the finals.

The Queen’s Women’s Squash team had a great season this year. After graduating top player and coach last year the team added three strong rookies to the playing roster. The team had excellent results in the Jester’s League events and are heading into the championship (to be held March 8th) in first place. On the OUA front, Queen’s placed 4th at the Championships with especially strong performances by Megan Richmond who won a bronze medal in her division and great performances by rookies Sadie Wilson and Marcia Filgiano.

The track Gaels competed in eight meets over the course of the 2013-14 season, culminating the CIS Championships in Edmonton, where Queen’s was represented by four athletes: Victoria Coates, Julie-Anne Staehli, David Cashin and rookie Alex Wilkie, all of whom qualified in the 3000m (also the 1500m for Julie-Anne), by being ranked in the top 12 in the nation. Julie-Anne emerged victorious in the 3000m, with Victoria 5th. On the men’s side, Alex Wilkie exceeded expectations in placing 9th, while Dave Cashin finished 12th. The 2012-13 campaign also saw numerous athletes record top 10 all-time Queen’s marks in a range of events, from the 60m hurdles (rookies Mary Ollier and Steve Wilkins-Reeves) to the 3000m (Jeff Archer, along with Alex Wilkie and Dave Cashin). The team had the highest number of athletes (25) qualify to represent the university at the OUA championship since the 2009-10 season.

Queen’s Triathlon has had a great racing season this year. Gaels athletes placed highly, achieving top three finishes at each race for the season. The team also successfully hosted the Wolfe Island Duathlon in October that was attended by many university teams.

The Queen’s men’s Ultimate team played hard this season with some up and down games, but with an unwavering attitude to strive and achieve for the best. It was through the heart of the players and effort in practices that brought success as a team. Hosting Easterns for the third year in a row, Queen’s lost an unfortunate “last point wins” game against Guelph, but turned it around to clench a bronze by the end of the day against UofT. It was at Nationals that teams were really put to the test. Almost unprecedented was the evenly matched skill levels of the top tier teams. Along with the relentless weather of strong winds and pouring rain made games a challenge. There were difficult games but Queen’s ended up taking 6th place. There is much hope for the coming years as many strong new players stepped in to the midst of the team.

The Gaels were fortunate to participate in three tournaments instead of the usual two this season. The extra opportunities helped bring the Gaels together as a strong, hard-working team. The first tournament was Steeltown Classic in Hamilton, an invitational where the Gaels placed 5th. Next was the Canadian Eastern University Ultimate Championships (CEUUC) at home in Kingston. The Gaels hosted the tournament and placed 7th. The Gaels ended their season at Nationals, the Canadian University Ultimate Championships (CUUC) in Ottawa. The ladies played hard in their last game against Waterloo, with the score tied throughout the entire game. The Gaels lost in universe point to finish 10th overall.

This year the Queen’s wresting team made great strides. Each wrestler worked and training hard, to achieve their success this year. It is very fulfilling to see their determination and love of the sport.

The women’s team showed their determination at each and every tournament, which resulted in some great wrestling matches. Kerri Malcolm won a bronze medal win at the Ontario Junior Championships and fifth place finish at the OUA’s. Liz Wigle finished with a solid 4th place finish at the OUA’s and narrowly missing the opportunity to compete at the CIS championships. 4th year veteran Yi Quan, completed her university wrestling career showing her strong and determined side. She was also a great asset to the team to keep it organized and motivated. She will greatly be missed next year but not forgotten.

The men’s team, rookie Peter Shannon started out strong for Queen’s by winning bronze medals at both York University and the Ontario Junior Provincials, and placing 4th at this year’s OUA Championships. Wrestling Veteran Jean-Francoise Godin joined the Queen’s team this year during his graduate studies. He inspired the team through his hard work and took silver medals at the Brock University, and York University open, a gold medal win at the Queen’s University open, bronze medal at the OUA championships, and finally 5th place as at the CIS championships in New Brunswick where 18 universities were represented.

In its second year, the Varsity Leadership Council (VLC) continued working towards connecting Queen’s athletes with the Kingston community. This year the VLC launched its inaugural TriColour Series to develop and promote athlete-community integration. Over 100 athletes attended three Varsity sporting events across three separate weekends, and included themes such as The Jack Project/Mental Health Awareness day. Congratulations to the Women’s Volleyball for having the highest roster percentage of athletes in attendance and winning the Series this year! Other initiatives include: running the second Annual Christmas Basket food drive with local soup kitchen Martha’s Table, and teaming up with OneMatch, the Stem Cell & Marrow network. Athletes donated over 30 baskets to Martha’s Table and over 75 athletes were swabbed with OneMatch. Finally, the VLC held its first-ever transition retreat. Incoming and outgoing members gathered to receive leadership training and collaborate on new and exciting outreach opportunities. It is our hope that community involvement will continue to grow and become a fundamental component of the Queen’s student-athlete experience.

The Graduating “Q” Award embodies these qualities and signifies the development a student-athlete experiences while at Queen’s. This award is made from slate, a metamorphic rock that has undergone alteration through heat and pressure to form its current state. Slate also symbolizes a record of performance and represents a new beginning. Graduating studentathletes have been tested by the combined rigors of athletics and academics during their career at Queen’s. The personal growth you have experienced as a student-athlete has prepared you for success in future endeavours. The Graduating “Q” is a constant reminder of your experience as a student-athlete. The commitment, perseverance, joy, pain, and ultimately the successes you have achieved are all represented by this award.
