WELCOMING MESSAGES

As the 2014-15 athletic season draws to a close, I am pleased to offer my congratulations to our student-athletes, teams, coaches and support staff for another great season of Gaels Sport. This 79th edition of the Colour Awards will pay tribute to the accomplishments and achievements over the past year, but it also serves as an important connection to an athletic tradition and legacy of generations of student-athletes who have worn the tri-colour. This is an exciting time for sport, recreation and physical activity at Queen’s. In 2016, thanks to the generosity of our alumni, we will celebrate the construction of a revitalized Richardson Stadium for our student-athletes and fans to enjoy for years to come. To our graduating athletes who will soon depart University life to take on new and exciting challenges, I wish you the best of luck. I also encourage you to remain engaged and to reach out in support of your respective programs and of future Gaels as these athletes pursue the legacy that you have helped to inspire.

DANIEL R. WOOLF

Principal and Vice-Chancellor

Thank you for your contributions to Queen’s and to the important role that you have played in our rich history of sport. Cha Gheill!

Another athletic year has drawn to a close and it gives me great pleasure to share in celebrating the accomplishments of our student-athletes and teams at this year’s Colour Awards. Tonight we are recognizing the student-athletes and teams who have earned our highest honours. We are also celebrating a tremendous athletic community, one that supports and inspires, that is active in community service, and that represents Queen’s as both competitors and ambassadors. Our student-athletes continue to exhibit both academic and athletic excellence. This year, 328 student-athletes earned Academic All-Star status. This is an all-time high for Queen’s, and we continually place among the top five schools in Canada. This achievement, combined with the on–field performance of our student-athletes, reflects the fact that our university is the home of scholars and champions. Congratulations to all of our student-athletes! I would also like to thank the many coaches, support staff and volunteers who are integral to the exceptional experiences of our student-athletes, and to the success of our programs. I am looking forward to the 2015-16 season, to the performances of our athletes and teams, to hosting the 2015 CIS Women’s Rugby Championships, and to the revitalization of our stadium – it will be a great year for the Gaels! To our student-athletes: all the best with your exams and your future athletic and academic endeavours.

WELCOMING MESSAGES

I would like to offer my congratulations and thanks for an exciting 201415 season of Gaels sports. I am immensely proud of our student-athletes, coaches, support staff and teams who represent Queen’s as both fierce competitors and outstanding ambassadors. Kudo’s to Men’s Rugby, Women’s Fencing and Cycling who all captured repeat championships and to women’s squash who stood atop the podium for the first time since 2009. Equally impressive is the number of talented student-athletes who were recognized with provincial and national honours this year. Our future shines bright. My thanks to the VLC and our entire varsity community for your continued support to charities like Run for the Cure, Martha’s Table and the Boy’s and Girl’s Club; and for your new social media initiatives such as Mental Health Doesn’t Care and Get Real initiatives. Through your efforts you are making an impact on our campus and in our community. My sincerest thank you to our dedicated coaches, team captains, support staff, alumni and team supporters who come together to make the Gaels varsity environment inspiring, rewarding and remarkable. This is a tradition, legacy and winning edge that sets us apart.

The Varsity Leadership Council (VLC) exists as a forum for varsity athletes to discuss the athletic experience at Queen’s, provide recommendations to Queen’s Athletics & Recreation and facilitate interaction between all varsity student-athletes. The council aims to promote a positive image of Queen’s student-athletes and build relations within Queen’s University and Kingston communities through volunteer opportunities and community programs. Finally, the VLC aims to foster a student-athlete culture through team building events and support at home competitions.

RESULTS • 2nd at Power Cheerleading Association Nationals

At Nationals, the team came out determined to prove themselves in front of a packed audience including alumni, fans, and families. SEASON RECAP

The OUA Championship men’s team of six players was named in November and participated in an exhibition event hosted by Trent and then competed very well in an open men’s tournament in January. The team conducted themselves extremely well at the OUA championship event held in Guelph. The results of three wins and three losses and not making the playoff round did not reflect the excellent play by the team in all games: two of the three losses in extra ends, the other on last shot. Overall, player and team development was a great takeaway from the season.

RESULTS • 7th at OUA Men’s Championship • 10th (tie) at OUA Women’s Championship TEAM AWARDS • MVP: Emily Dyson and Kyle Thompson • Rookie of the Year: Mackenzie Roberts and Kyle Thompson

• MIP: Nick Thompson

The women’s curling team had three members from last year’s team return and the second and alternate positions were filled with members of last year’s Junior Varsity team. The team played in two invitational bonspiels – one in Peterborough and another in Oshawa to help prepare for OUAs. At the OUA Curling Championships in Guelph in February, the team finished in a 3-way tie for fifth spot out of an eight team pool and 10th overall.

SEASON RECAP

In this year’s 2014-2015 season, the Queen’s Gaels won their 5th consecutive University Cup Championship; unprecedented in the history of varsity sports at Queen’s University and in the history of the University Cup Series. Led by their coach and captain, Etienne Moreau (who won every elite level men’s division race this year), the Gaels rode to a commanding victory in the four race weekends over their nearest rivals, Guelph, nearly doubling them in points. Once the Gaels realized that their hard work and training over the summer had paid off in full, there was no stopping the Queen’s army from marching straight on to victory. The only shortcoming for the team is that there isn’t a way to prove that they are the best not only in Ontario, but in all of Canada.

RESULTS • 1st in University Cup Series (U-Cup) TEAM AWARDS • MVPs: Cameron McPhaden • Rookie of the Year: Haley Golding SPECIAL HONOURS • Etienne Moreau: Queen’s Athlete of the Week (Oct. 6), 1st place - Men’s A Overall

SEASON RECAP

The fastpitch Gaels had a strong season fighting their way into playoffs up until the very last league game.

RESULTS • 7th in Ontario Intercollegiate Women’s Fastpitch

The Gaels clinched the 8th and final playoff spot with their 7-11 league record. The 2014 season was a massive turn around season with six returning players and seven rookies. The players quickly developed strong team chemistry, which led to success on and off the field.

OIWFA ALL-STARS • Jade Yerex, Taylor Bluhm

Fastpitch battled the elements this season with rain following the Gaels around the province and light turning off in the middle of a key game. Despite the issues the club faced, they continued to battle and had their best game of the season against the Western Mustangs in the playoffs in which the Mustangs pulled off a 6-3 victory over the Gaels.

Association (OIWFA): 7-11

TEAM AWARDS • MVP: Jade Yerex • Rookie of the Year: Taylor Bluhm

The team strung multiple hits together to score runs and played convincing defence. Although the Gaels fell 0-3 at the playoff tournament, it was a promising outing and a great ending to a fantastic season.

SEASON RECAP

In 2014-2015, Queen’s Fencing comprised 50 men and 55 women fencers, of which fully 78 held Canadian Fencing Federation competitive licenses. The continuing and steady growth of the Queen’s club was matched this season by triumph for Women’s Fencing. With medals in individual and team relay events and strong top eight finishes the Gaels Women’s Fencing squad accumulated enough points to capture its second consecutive OUA banner at the championships held at York University January 31- February 1. Men’s Fencing experienced similar successes throughout their season. The men achieved third place behind Carleton and Toronto in the OUA Men’s Championship hosted by Brock University, February 21-22 capturing two fourth place finishes in the three individual events, and one silver medal in the three team relay events. This season marks the fifth consecutive OUA championship won by a team from the Fencing Club. Earlier in the season, Queen’s Fencing medalled at every competition and earned second place in the RMC cup—a trophy that recognizes strength and depth in a fencing club. The continuing strong record Queen’s Fencing would not have been possible without the enduring and loyal support of Fencing’s alumni and friends.

The second and final competition of the season was OUAs, and the team was looking to improve their overall standing. They ended the first day of competition in 7th place, with a single gold medal, and came into the second day with steep goals. The Gaels were able to win another gold, as well as a silver and bronze in two other events. After an 8th place finish in the synchronized skating event at the first competition, the Queen’s Gaels were looking to put out a solid synchro performance at OUAs. With a near perfect performance, the Gaels were able to increase their season’s best score by almost 20 points to mount a come-from-behind victory and grab the synchro gold at OUAs. This win put them in 5th place overall, only four points short of the bronze. SEASON RECAP

The 2014 season began with expectations to improve on last year’s semi-finalist spot in the championships. Starting a strong schedule with a tough loss at Bishops and undefeated in the regular season McGill. In a defensive showdown at home, a 7-6 loss to McGill was the lowest amount of goals a team has held them to in five years. With this momentum, the team won 6 of the last 8 good for third place in east standings and a home field advantage in the first round of playoffs. After a 7-6 OT win against Carleton the stage was set for a rematch of last year’s quarter-final game against #2 ranked Western. In a high scoring game, Western had two big leads of 5-1 and 12-7 vanished by comebacks, finally a last second comeback goal to tie the game 15-15 and force overtime. While scoring first in OT, it would not be enough as Western would score two in the final minutes to take another memorable game. A hard fought season filled with injuries, adversity, individual and team accomplishments producing a lot of excitement to crack the final 4 ahead of next season.

SEASON RECAP

The team started slowly, losing 4 of their first 5 games, but found their footing mid-season, improving steadily in a league that has been both growing and improving over the past three years. The highlight of the regular season was the last game against U of T: a nail-biting 10-9 last-minute loss to decide the Eastern rankings. Overall, the regular season record was 5-6-1. Sophomore attack player Mackenzie Clemens led scoring and points with 17 goals. Sarah Utting, Player/Coach Teresa Mayo and freshman Alexa Fenton rounded-out a well-balanced offence. Despite numerous injuries, the team notched 114 goals while giving up 108. Queen’s ranked 3rd in the OUA Eastern division behind Toronto and UOIT. UOIT hosted the OUA Championship and Queen’s played Brock in the East-West crossover quarter-final game. Brock had a large lead at the half, and the Gaels couldn’t climb back enough in the second half. As it was, the Gaels were eliminated from the medal round and faced Guelph next. It was close too, the difference in the game being an ‘own-goal’ by Guelph. Laurier rallied in the last minute to beat Queen’s after that.

SEASON RECAP

This season was a tremendous success. The training and preparation started early with an on-snow camp in November in Quebec City, Que. Through the weekend there were over 1,000 km. skied between 12 athletes. The season got underway with racing in Hunstville, ON, where the team was represented by six athletes. Cold temperatures delayed start times but once things got underway it was clear that all of the training had paid off! The next stop on the race calendar was Ottawa. This was the site for the Eastern Canadian Championships. The team arrived a day early to ensure familiarity with the courses. Saturday and Sunday featured long distance skate and classic races where the team skied extremely well, despite temperatures forcing many indoors.

RESULTS

OUA Team Results: • Men 5th • Women 5th OUA Individual Results: • Colin Foley - 18th in 6.6km • Stuart Thibert - 25th in 6.6km • Sarah Lamb - 24th in 6.6km • Amelia Espey - 25th in 6.6km

OUAs was the final event of the season. Held in North Bay, ON, the cold weather was once again a factor. The first race was a team sprint relay, held on the up-face of a downhill ski run. Needless to say, this Friday night was one to remember. Whipping winds and partially illuminated corners made for racing mayhem once the sun set. With racing closing down after 8:00PM, the racers toughness was certainly tested.

SEASON RECAP

Having lost three players from the 2013-14 season, it was a rebuilding year. Fortunately, the addition of Wilfred Ip and Zach Austin to the line-up helped make the men’s squash team competitive. In the east division of the Jesters University Squash League, Queen’s came second behind McGill which qualified Queen’s to the Jesters Championships. There, Queen’s lost to Western in the semifinals and then lost to McMaster in the 3-4 playoff to finish fourth overall. But having made the playoffs attests to the depth and quality of this year’s squash team.

Seven teams (Western, McMaster, Waterloo, Brock, Toronto, Queen’s, Guelph) competed in this year’s OUA Championships held at the Northfield Fitness and Racquet Club in Waterloo. Despite strong individual performances by Matt Haffey and Zach Austin, the team finished the tournament in sixth place. This year’s men’s OUA champion was Western for the 32nd consecutive year.

SEASON RECAP

The team came into this season after losing almost half the dominant players from the year before. On paper this was a rebuilding year. On the field it was another story entirely. Queen’s restructured practices, enhanced plays, and worked tirelessly on team chemistry and fitness. In the first tournament in Hamilton the team went undefeated into the finals and took a hard loss by one point after hard cap. Come Eastern’s (tournament) men’s Ultimate again won all their games, save one. After weeks of practice the Gaels took off to Montreal to compete for three days at Nationals. It was here that they were truly tested as a team. Facing competition that they had yet to see earlier in the season, it was with perseverance and comradery Queen’s defeated each team they came against and won each game they had set their sight-lines on.

RESULTS • 3rd place finish at Canadian Eastern University Championships (CEUUC)

SEASON RECAP

Starting off the season, the team had two months before nationals to be ready to compete. With few returning players, tryouts proved favourable, providing an influx of young talent. At the first qualifier, Steeltown, Queen’s took 5th place overall; at the second qualifier, CEUUC, the team battled through injuries taking out some key players, and lost a tough battle to finish 6th overall. Gearing up for Nationals, the team was feeling confident in securing one of the last spots in the top division. Unfortunately, after playing pivotal games without three key players, the competition got the best of the team, and Queen’s just missed the last spot in the first division. Starting Day 2 in the second division, the Gaels decided to grind through the cold weather and go undefeated. After what proved to be a stressful pool play (having to win the same game on universe four times), Queen’s was ready to meet Carleton in the finals.

RESULTS • 6th place finish at Canadian Eastern University Championships (CEUUC)
