W ELCO M i n g M ESSAGES

As another athletic season draws to a close, I am very pleased to recognize and applaud the outstanding achievements of our many student-athletes, coaches, teams and programs this year. Congratulations on another great season of Gaels sport! In addition to tremendous individual and team performances over the past year, we were also able to celebrate two successful homecoming weekends which featured many of our studentathletes competing in front of alumni and fans alike. It was a true testament to the tricolour spirit! Later this spring, many of our student-athletes will graduate and depart University life to take on new and exciting challenges. As you transition into our newest alumni I wish you the best of luck. I also encourage you to remain engaged and to reach out in support of your respective programs and future Gaels as these athletes pursue the athletic legacy that you have helped inspire and forge.

DANIEL WOOLF

Principal & Vice-Chancellor

Thank you for being an important part of the Queen’s community, I look forward to following and celebrating your success as alumni and I look forward to another great season of Queen’s sports in the coming year. Cha Gheill!

The Colour Awards mark the official end to the athletic year and provide a wonderful opportunity to acknowledge and pay tribute to the efforts of our student-athletes and teams. Student-athletes at Queen’s continue to exhibit both academic and athletic excellence. Queen’s routinely places among the top five schools in Canada for the number of Academic All-Stars. This achievement combined with the on –field performance of our student athletes, truly makes our university the home of Scholars and Champions. Queen’s student athletes are also wonderful ambassadors for the University. Once again the VLC (Varsity Leadership Council) established a positive role in both the Queen’s and Kingston communities with their volunteerism and leadership. I would also like to thank the many coaches, support staff and volunteers who are integral to the exceptional experiences of our student-athletes and to the success of our programs. As the athletic season draws to a close, I wish all student athletes the best of luck with exams and your future athletic and academic endeavors.

The heavyweight two, lightweight eight and heavyweight four crews all took bronze. At the CURC championships, the lightweight men’s coxed four was the race of the day, with the team comprised of “old boys” Jordan Rendall, Alan Payno-Montoya, Patrick McCrady, and Chris Zakos and coxed by Greg Wilson. This was the most exciting race of the day, with the top three boats staying neck and neck for almost 200m. The Gaels took home the bronze medal.

SEASON RECAP

The Gaels entered the season looking to defend their OUA championship title from their 2012 season. The team went 7-0 overall, and finished in first at the end of their regular season, cementing themselves in a strong spot to reclaim their second consecutive OUA championship title. The Gaels finished the season with the most points scored and fewest against. With only 50 points being scored against them, the Gaels had little difficulty defeating McMaster in the OUA semifinals, setting the Gaels up for a rematch of last year’s OUA championship against the Western Mustangs at Nixon Field. The match saw Western score first with a quick penalty goal. Minutes later the Gaels scored their first try of the game, brought over the line by Matt Mullins, and the conversion kicked by Adam McQueen. The Mustangs scored a try of their own, followed by a well placed conversion. These would be the last points Western scored against the Gaels. The second half saw the Gaels go on a 33 point scoring run resulting in the 20th OUA championship for men’s rugby.

With a 7-2-7 finish Queen’s women’s soccer locked down the fourth spot in the OUA East division. They scored eight goals in two straight games part way through the season beating Trent and RMC with 8-0 shutouts. In the OUA quarterfinal the Gaels drew Laurentian and handed them a 6-0 loss. Up next was a trip to Ottawa to take on the No.1 team in Canada the Gee-Gees. The game went scoreless through 90 minutes and extra time and penalty kicks were needed to decide a victor. Brittany Almeida scored the lone goal while Madison Tyrell stopped all shots faced to eliminate the Gee-Gees. At the final four tournament Queen’s drew Western who took over the new No.1 ranking in Canada. Queen’s was once again not phased and the game went to penalties after remaining scoreless. The Mustangs converted three to the Gaels two kicks to advance to the final. The Gaels capped off their season with an OUA bronze medal beating Carleton in penalty kicks converting four attempts. This marks the fifth year in a row the Gaels have finished with at least a bronze at the OUA Championship.

SEASON RECAP

In its second year, the Varsity Leadership Council (VLC) continued working towards connecting Queen’s athletes with the Kingston community. This year the VLC launched its inaugural TriColour Series to develop and promote athlete-community integration. Over 100 athletes attended three Varsity sporting events across three separate weekends, and included themes such as The Jack Project/Mental Health Awareness day. Congratulations to the Women’s Volleyball for having the highest roster percentage of athletes in attendance and winning the Series this year! Other initiatives include: running the second Annual Christmas Basket food drive with local soup kitchen Martha’s Table, and teaming up with OneMatch, the Stem Cell & Marrow network. Athletes donated over 30 baskets to Martha’s Table and over 75 athletes were swabbed with OneMatch. Finally, the VLC held its first-ever transition retreat. Incoming and outgoing members gathered to receive leadership training and collaborate on new and exciting outreach opportunities. It is our hope that community involvement will continue to grow and become a fundamental component of the Queen’s student-athlete experience.
