HEAD COACH

SEASON REVIEW

MATT HOLMBERG

It was a spectacular run for the Queen’s women’s hockey team in 2017-18 as they locked up the top spot in the OUA standings for the first time since the 1989-90 season.

Holmberg is in his 12th year with the team, and ninth as head coach. Last season, Holmberg and the Gaels were the hosts of the U SPORTS women’s hockey championship in Napanee. The Gaels skated away from the tournament with a win over StFX and a 6th place finish. In 2013-14 he guided the Gaels to an OUA silver medal and in 2012-13 to their best season in team history as the team captured the OUA Championship, their second under Holmberg. The 2012-13 Gaels finished with a program best 20 wins during the regular season, topping the previous best of 19 set by Holmberg’s 2009-10 team. During their 2010-11 OUA Championship season they were also the bronze medalists at the national championship. In their run to Queen’s first OUA title in 32 years, the Gaels knocked off three nationally-ranked opponents, winning all five of their games in overtime. Included in that run, Holmberg coached the Gaels to victory in the longest game in collegiate hockey history, a six overtime win over the Guelph Gryphons in Game 1 of the OUA Championship. Holmberg was the CIS Women’s Hockey Coaches Association president from 20132016. He is High Performance 2 trained and has spent considerable time assisting Hockey Canada and the Ontario Women’s Hockey Association at various events and camps, both on and off the ice.

The Gaels started the OUA campaign on fire picking up at least a point in their first 13 games while going on a nine-game win streak to close out the first semester. Queen’s finished out the season with an impressive 17-3-4 record for 52 points to finish as the top seed in the conference. Queen’s was led by OUA MVP and scoring leader Katrina Manoukarakis (15G, 30A) up front, OUA goaltender of the year Stephanie Pascal (14 wins, 1.33 GAA, 0.944 SV%) between the pipes and coach of the year Matt Holmberg behind the bench. The Gaels carved their way through the OUA playoffs taking out Waterloo in three games before sweeping Nipissing to advance to the OUA championship where they fell to Western 3-0 in the McCaw Cup final.

Assistant Coaches

Holmberg was named the OUA women’s hockey coach of the year twice (2009-10, 2017-18) and the Fox 40 OUA male coach of the year in 2010-11. He holds the Gaels women’s hockey record for most wins by a coach including playoffs. The Pembroke, Ontario native graduated from Queen’s Law in 1997.

QUEEN’S GAELS - WOMEN’S HOCKEY MEDIA NOTES - 2017-18 17

PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONS: 1926 1931 1963 1973 1975 1977 1979 2011 2013

HISTORY AND AWARDS FIRST GAME The first women’s hockey game was played at the Kingston Skating Rink on Arch Street on March 5, 1896, between the Queen’s team, known as the Morning Glories, and the Black and Blues, representing the Kingston Ladies College, a girls private high school located on Emily Street. That game -- the first of two between the teams in a five-day span -- was described in the Daily British Whig as “a revelation” and “a lively, interesting, exciting and most unique game of hockey.”

WOMEN’S INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETIC UNION The Women’s Intercollegiate Athletic Union (a forerunner to Ontario University Athletics) was formed in 1921 and Queen’s won the league title twice (1925-26, 1930-31) before the league disbanded in 1933. Due to the withdrawals of Queen’s and McGill, there was little or no intercollegiate competition for the next quarter-century. Queen’s revived its women’s hockey program in 1960-61, playing exhibition games that season, before rejoining the intercollegiate ranks in 1961-62. The following season, Queen’s and Toronto shared the Ontario title after the two teams finished in a tie for top spot at the national championship tournament in Toronto. Queen’s was led by Katherine (Cookie) Cartwright, who scored nine goals and 12 points in the tournament.

The 1974-75 Queen’s Women’s Hockey Team

In 1973, Queen’s won the first of its four championships in seven seasons. Following a 10-1-1 regular season, the women hosted a two-day championship tournament at Jock Harty Arena, Feb. 16 and 17. Queen’s also won the league championship in 1974-75, 1976-77 and 1978-79. Queen’s won two more Ontario titles in recent years (2011 and 2013) and earned a berth in the league final in 2014.

ELIZABETH GRAHAM

Queen’s University netminder Elizabeth Graham is credited with being the first goaltender to ever wear a mask for protection. The historic event took place in 1927, three years before NHLer Clint Benedict strapped on his leather mask. As reported in the Montreal Daily Star at the time, Graham “gave the fans a surprise when she stepped into the nets and then donned a fencing mask.” Myth has it that Elizabeth’s father pressured her into wearing the mask after she underwent extensive dental work. KATHERINE “COOKIE” CARTWRIGHT AND THE GOLDEN PATH TROPHY

The Golden Path Trophy was donated in 1998 by Katherine “Cookie” Cartwright, former player and the first head coach of the Queen’s Gaels women’s hockey team, from 1971 to 1977. Cartwright led the reinstatement of Canadian women’s university hockey in 1960, and chaired the steering committee that formed the Ontario Women’s Hockey Association. This organization became the cornerstone for the explosive growth of women’s hockey since 1980.

LONGEST COLLEGIATE HOCKEY GAME

On March 3, 2011 a playoff game between the Queen’s Gaels and the Guelph Gryphons became the longest collegiate hockey game, male or female, Canadian or American — on record. The game began on Wednesday and it ended in the early morning on Thursday. The duration of the match was 167 minutes and 14 seconds before Queen’s forward Morgan McHaffie placed a rebound past Gryphons goalie Danielle Skoufranis in the sixth overtime period. McHaffie now serves as an assistant coach for the Gaels. Puck drop of the opening ceremonies in Napanee

2017 U SPORTS NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP HOSTS

Queen’s University hosted the women’s hockey national championship for the first time in their history in 2017. The championship tournament was hosted in Napanee, Ontario at the Strathcona Paper Centre. The Gaels were the eighth seed and finished the tournament in sixth place. The gold medal game saw the Alberta Pandas defeat the McGill Martletts to win the Golden Path Trophy.
