SEASON RECAP The Queen’s Gaels are returning to the CIS national women’s rugby championship after a one-year absence, and once again qualify as the OUA silver medallists. The Gaels fell, 10-6, to the Gryphons in the OUA championship game on Saturday, their first defeat in 11 games this season. Queen’s was making its third trip to the league final, and its second in three years. Queen’s went 8-1 overall, and rose to being ranked as high as #3 in the country – their highestever national ranking. The Gaels toured Alberta during the preseason, and picked up wins over traditional Canada West powers Calgary and Lethbridge. In regular-season play, the Gaels rattled off six straight wins, with their closest game being a 14-point road win over Western in the second week of the season. The Gaels scored at least 30 points in every game this year, and held teams to single digits three times, including a 37-0 season-opening shutout of the Brock Badgers. The perfect regular season was the fourth in school history, after runs in 2010 (5-0), 2005 (6-0) and 2003 (4-0). The Gaels scored 294 points in the regular season, a school record, and allowed only 54 points, sixth-lowest in school history. Bronwyn Corrigan (Waterloo, Ont.) led the Gaels with 55 points, second in the OUA, as she scored seven tries and kicked 10 conversions. Rookie inside centre Nadia Popov (Newmarket, Ont.) was close behind with 52 points on six tries and 11 conversions. She was fourth on the league table. Taylor White (Bancroft, Ont.) was eighth in the league with eight tries for 40 points, while Kayla Roote (Peterborough, Ont.) scored five tries for 25 points, and was 19th overall. In the playoffs, the Gaels cruised to a quarter-final win over Trent, and fought off a second-half comeback to defeat the Waterloo Warriors to advance to the OUA Championship. In the league final, an early Guelph try stood up, as the Gryphons narrowly prevailed, 10-6. The Gaels had six players win OUA honours, as Marin MacLeod (Pictou County, N.S.) was named the OUA Community Service Award winner and Popov was named the OUA Russell Division Rookie of the Year and a division all-star. White, Corrigan, Susan Heald (Burlington, Ont) and Claragh Pegg (Barrie, Ont.) were also named league all-stars.

No. 5 Gaels dump Western, 31-17

No. 5 Gaels cruise to win over Toronto

A four-try performance by veteran flanker Taylor White (Bancroft, Ont.) led the No. 5-ranked Queen’s Gaels to a 31-17 win over the Western Mustangs in OUA women’s rugby action in London, Sunday. The Gaels co-captain led from the front, as she scored twice in each half to give Queen’s a win in their first game against the Mustangs since 2006.

Nadia Popov (Newmarket, Ont.) led the No. 5-ranked Queen’s Gaels with two tries and four conversions in their 67-8 win over U of T in OUA women’s rugby action, Saturday. The first-year center had an outstanding game as the Gaels cruised to the win in their third league game.

Gaels shut out Brock to open regular season Bronwyn Corrigan (Waterloo, Ont.) led the No. 5-ranked Queen’s Gaels with four tries in their 37-0 win over the Brock Badgers in OUA women’s rugby action , Wednesday. The third-year lock had a career day as the Gaels cruised to the win in their first game at newly-renovated Nixon Field. Gillian Pegg (Barrie, Ont.) put the first points on the board with a try in the second minute that originated from a ruck. The Gaels stole the ball and spun it wide giving Pegg the opportunity to put Queen’s on the board. Corrigan scored the second try of the game, going on a 15 yard run in the tenth minute. Twenty minutes later, excellent teamwork and communication by the Gaels allowed Pegg to score her second try, and a try by Nadia Popov (Newmarket, Ont.) in the 38th minute put Queen’s up 20-0 at halftime. The second half of the game saw Brock gain some momentum, as they entered the second half of the game with more energy. However, they were not able to break past the defensive tactic of the Gaels. In the 65th minute of the game, Corrigan managed to break through the Badgers’ defense to score her second try of the game. She went on to score two more tries in second half, in the 73rd and 77th minutes. A 74th-minute conversion by Danielle Underwood (Toronto, Ont.) rounded out the scoring. “It was a good first league game,” said Gaels Head Coach Beth Barz. “In set pieces, our scrums played well and we moved the ball forward well, but we will need to improve on our rucks.”

[12] www.gogaelsgo.com

“It was a total team effort, and we had a really good match,” said Beth Barz, the Gaels’ head coach. “Their plan of attack was to move us left and right, and we countered that effectively. We counter-rucked well, and beat them to the ball. Overall, we made some good decisions today.” White’s first two scores of the night gave the Gaels a 12-0 lead, as she put the ball down in the fourth and the 12th minutes. Western responded in the 30th minute, to cut the gap to seven points, but rookie Nadia Popov (Newmarket, Ont.) scored just before the interval to restore the Gaels’ 12-point lead, at 17-5. Western pulled back to within seven at the 59-minute mark, but the Gaels put the game away in the final ten minutes, as White scored in the 70th and 73th minutes to give Queen’s an insurmountable 31-10 lead, as well as a bonus point. The Mustangs would add a final try in the final minute to cut the final margin to 14 points. Popov went 3-for-5 on conversions, to finish with 11 points.

Popov put the first points on the board with a try in the fourth minute after an incredible 65-yard run. This started a 36 point scoring streak for the Gaels. Natalie Poirier scored the second try in the ninth minute on a 20 yard run, followed by Popov’s second try of the game. Also contributing to the scoring in the first half Liz Hobbs of Stittsville, Ont., and Bronwyn Corrigan of Waterloo, Ont., who each scored a try. U of T attempted to claw their way back into the game in the last few minutes of the first half, with Karla Telidetzki scoring a try in the 36th minute on a 20 yard run after a break down in the Gaels lineup. The score at the end of the first half stood 36-5 for Queen’s. U of T began the second half strong, and seemed to have gained momentum from their try in at the end of the first half. A drop goal by Nicole Baker in the 47th minute brought the score to 36-8. However, this did not faze the Gaels as they went on to score 31 points in the second half, through a combination of tries and successful conversion kicks. Contributing to the scoring in the second half were Caitie Ryan of Kamloops, B.C. (2 tries), Hobbs, Popov and Kayla Roote of Peterborough, Ont. - each of whom scored one try, along with three conversions by Corrigan.

Gaels cruise to 55-8 win over Trent

Gaels cap undefeated season with win over York

A balanced attack led the Queen’s Gaels to a victory, 55-8, over the Trent Excalibur, in OUA women’s rugby action in Peterborough, Friday night. The Gaels got scoring from nine different players as they ran their record to 5-0 and clinched first place in the OUA’s Russell Division. “We played a bit of a different lineup tonight, and were able to get lots of people some playing time. We rested some key people, and this will helps us make decisions as we get into the playoffs. But even with new people in the lineup, our attack worked were and we were good with the ball around the breakdown,” said Beth Barz, the Gaels’ head coach. After the teams traded scores in the first ten minutes (a Samantha Ellis try for the Gaels, a Celeigh Harris penalty for Trent), the Gaels put the game away with a pair of tries two minutes apart. Jenna Ledson found the end zone in the 14th minute, and Marin MacLeod put the ball down two minutes later. Bronwyn Corrigan converted both tries, putting Queen’s up 19-3. Queen’s added two more tries in the first half, from Kayla Roote and Caitie Ryan, to take a 31-3 lead at the interval.

Three tries by Kayla Roote led the Queen’s Gaels to a 72-11 victory over the York Lions in OUA women’s rugby action at Nixon Field, Friday. The thirdyear Number 8 scored tries after scrums deep in the Lions end in the 10th, 30th and 33th minutes, as the Gaels cruised to their seventh straight regular-season win, dating back to 2011. Queen’s led 38-3 at halftime. Jordyn Rowntree and Taylor White each scored a pair of tries for the Gaels, while Sarah Pathak, Miranda Seifert, Marin MacLeod and Nadia Popov each scored one try. Popov also added a pair of conversions, to finish with nine points. Four conversions by Bronwyn Corrigan rounded out the Queen’s scoring. Zoe Smith scored the Lions’ only try, while Alexis Boltsis kicked a pair of penalty goals.

In the second half, Kaitlin Newton scored for Trent on the hour mark, to cut the gap to 31-8, but rookie-of-the-year candidate Nadia Popov’s try in the 66th minute squashed any hopes of an Excalibur fightback. Taylor White scored two minutes later, followed by a Popov conversion to put Queen’s up 43-8. In the last five minutes, tries by Rose Sanderson, along with White’s second of the evening, provided Queen’s with their final margin of victory. “It was nice to see us having a balanced scoring attack,” said Barz. “We had our backs score some tries today, which was good to see.”

Guelph captures OUA Championship; Queen’s wins silver The Guelph Gryphons won their fifth straight OUA Championship over the Queen’s Gaels by a score of 10-6 at Nixon Field Saturday afternoon. The victory also marks the twelfth time that the Gryphons have won the OUA title since it was first contested in 1994. For Queen’s, it was their third time playing in the championship game and the second time since 1995. Early in the match, the Gryphons came out and showed why they are considered a favourite at this year’s CIS Championship. Guelph ran the ball hard, making life difficult the Queen’s defenders, and they quickly jumped out to 7-0 lead in the early minutes of the game with a try from from Caitlin Beaton, converted by Stefanie Tibelius. Midway through the first half the Gaels got their first opportunity to put points on the board, when the Gaels chose to kick a penalty goal over going into a scrum. Bronwyn Corrigan’s kick was good, bringing the score to 7-3, where it stayed until the interval. In the 48th minute of play, the Gaels chose once again to attempt a penalty goal over going into a scrum. Corrigan took the kick, bringing the score to 7-6. The Gaels continued to control the play for most of the second half. With minutes left in the half the Gryphons made a push for the Gaels try-line. The Gryphons chose a to go for a penalty goal over the scrum, hoping to clinch a few more points and cushion their lead. The kick was taken by Guelph’s Tibelius, bringing the Gryphons lead to 10-6. The Gaels continued to dig deep, they strung together great phases and rucked over the ball well, hoping to steal the victory from under Guelph. But the Gryphons proved to be too much for the Gaels on this day, and came away with 10-6 victory. Queen’s coach Beth Barz could not be more proud of the Gaels stating that the girls “played the lights out of this game.”
