ARTICLE TITLE | BY AUTHOR MAKING QUEEN SIZE MOVES
FROM THE DESK OF Tawana Blassingame Founder & Editor in Chief
Welcome to the January 2021 issue of Queen Size Magazine. Since the inception of QSM, we have always released a month ahead. So I am a bit premature in wishing you all a greater 2022. 2021 has kicked us in the ass. It has taken away our loved ones, our money, businesses, and freedom to breathe easy. We have had to learn how to make some major adjustments in our lives. We also had to learn some things about ourselves. This year was definitely a prime example of all of the things and people that we took for granted. We are all hoping a praying that 2021 is going to be a better year. But I think it is important for us to remember that in order for that to happen, we have made some personal changes. Think about all of the things that this year taught you and apply them starting now. Why wait for next year? Nothing changes overnight. As with every issue, I truly thank each and every person that had a hand in making Queen Size Magazine possible. And on behalf of myself and Queen Size Magazine, I would like to thank all of our readers; without you we would not still be here. We would love to hear your feedback. Email us at queensizemagazine@gmail.com and let us know what you like, don’t like and/or want to see in future issues. We value your opinion. Be blessed and remember to be a blessing as well.

‘Tis the Season for Ginger
WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM|JANUARY 2021 ISSUE
‘TIS THE SEASON FOR GINGER | STATEPOINT
Ginger is not just spicy, sweet and delicious, it’s also tremendously good for you. And the holiday season is the perfect time to pack a punch with it in everything from the cookie tray to the cocktails. Here’s why and how to include this efficacious superfood in your holiday festivities. • Be good to yourself: Amid the COVID-19 pandemic and flu season, a nutritious immunity-boosting diet can help you take good care of your health. With its antiinflammatory and antioxidant properties, ginger boasts a wide range of health benefits, making it a great ingredient to include in your winter culinary repertoire. What’s more, ginger can help counteract some of the effects of an indulgent holiday season, as it promotes digestive health and calms nausea.
9
For holiday cocktails or enjoyed straight, try Reeds Real Ginger Ale, which is the only ginger ale on the market made with real, fresh ginger. Its original variety is non-GMO, packed with 2000 milligrams of organic pressed ginger and made with no artificial flavors, no artificial colors, no artificial preservatives and no high fructose corn syrup. There’s also a zero sugar variety too. Certified-ketogenic, it uses the same ingredients without the cane sugar. For more information, as well as holiday gift-giving and recipe inspiration, visit drinkreeds.com. A satisfying spice known worldwide for its wellness benefits, you can give your family the gift of flavor and health by putting ginger front-and-center this holiday season.
• Embrace its versatility: Ginger goes far beyond such holiday classics like gingerbread houses. With a little creativity, it can be incorporated into every course of your holiday meal, adding a rare depth of flavor few other ingredients can match. Reed’s Crystallized Ginger makes it easier than ever to add that burst of spicy sweetness to seasonal recipes with its diced, ready-to-eat baby ginger root. So, consider wowing your family! Whip up a batch of ginger-carrot soup, prepare a ginger-based salad dressing, top your roast with a ginger-gravy or simply garnish your favorite cocktail. • Go for the real stuff: To amp up the flavor and health benefits, use only ingredients incorporating real ginger. Just be sure to read the label. If you’re like the one in three ginger ale drinkers who reach for this bubbly beverage because you’re looking for a drink with actual ginger, you may be surprised to learn that most mainstream ginger ales contain almost no real ginger.

A DO OVER; BEAUTY ON THE HORIZON! | LALA SANYANG

Happy New Year Queens, I was in my closet purging myself of things that I no longer needed and no longer added value to my life. In doing so I came across a few items that brought back very deep memories and I said to myself "boy I could use a do-over on that situation". However during the cleansing process I stumbled across my 2015 To-Do list journal of goals I wanted to accomplish. After reviewing it, I felt extremely accomplished. Because the list was completed. And at that moment I realized that I did not need a Do-over and I was where I was supposed to be at this moment in time. 2020 has been an extremely challenging time for many of us and many of us are wishing Do-overs. However, I challenge you look at the current situation and make the best of situation. And know that you are being brought to this moment because you are prepared for it. Now understand just because you're prepared for the moment doesn't make it less challenging. Going forward, in 2021 we have create to the bright spots in our lives and allow those moments to guide us because Beauty is on the Horizon. xoxo LaLa Sanyang

MODEL SPOTLIGHT | JUANITA CHANDLER
QSM: Juanita, tell us a little bit about who you are and what you do for a living. Juanita: I am a Mother of four wonderful teenagers, three biological and one bonus. I am a published Author, of Daily Devotionals. I am an advocate against domestic violence and sexual assault crimes against children. I recently left the world of Health Insurance to start my own baked goods business. QSM: What are some things about you that people would be surprised to learn? Juanita: I am a Wedding Officiant. I only starting modeling at the age of 40. I consider myself a healer. I have embarked on the studies of Reiki and am working on my certification. This year I was the first year of the Sisterhood of Survival Weekend. In which I am the Co-founder. It is a weekend where survivors of domestic violence can come together and speak about their experiences, heal, and network. QSM: What is modeling to you and sparked your interest to pursue a career in this field? Juanita: Modeling is much more than being a pretty face. I wanted to show that there was another side to Plus Size Modeling. Not every model has a perfect “Coke Bottle” figure even in the Plus community. Beauty to me is a verb, is a state of mind, it is a belief, it’s an action. No one should have to fit a perfect mold and I wanted to show that. QSM: Where did you get your model training? Juanita: My first training came from my Aunt Donna Lowe, she was a model for Fashion Fair and my Mother Carrol
15
Steide who was just a marvel. I watched them as a little girl and I stood in awe. My formal training came from Curve Nation, even at that time I learned from MsNickee Mack. Currently, I am continuing training with MsNickee Mack under Diva Day International. QSM: Do you find that modeling is everything that you expected it to be? If not, what experiences have taught you differently? Juanita: In the beginning I had some major downfalls. I wanted to give up. There was the broken promises of promoters and the unprofessionalism of handlers. It was something. Two women always kept whispering in my ear telling me to keep going. Those women were MsNickee Mack and Gwen Devoe. They saw something in me even when I didn’t. Thank goodness they did. QSM: Who are some of the other plus size models and influencers that have inspired you and why? Juanita: There are so many! Sharonda Grandberry, Jeannie Ferguson, Gwen Devoe, MsNickee Mack, Asia Marin, ValaRae Partee, Tia Tillman, Maui Bigelow, Chris Perez, Sipora Richards, Dionne Reeves Grubbs, Farrah Estrella, and Sharon Quinn. I know that is a whole list, however these beautiful people are still paving the way and they are inspiring. They are not one of the “untouchables”. I have received kind and motivating words from them even while they are working and building and growing. That is what it is all about.

QSM: What contributions do you feel you make to the modeling industry and what are two things that you like to see change? Juanita: I feel like I am the change I want to see. I am representing for Melanated women over 40, that doesn’t have the perfect shape. I am the size 14/16 with the fupa, back fat, arm wings and still trying to do better. I am relatable. I believe that is quite an important contribution. I also started later in life. I am showing people that there is no age limit on living your dreams. Two things I would like to see, one is more representation of women of all ages. This is becoming more relevant in standard modeling I feel we need to catch up. The other thing I would like to see change and I feel is changing, is that there is a happy medium to fashionable clothing. I am seeing either Bodycon dresses or Daisies. Nothing wrong with either one, however we deserve Couture. For example, J. Bolin has a remarkable line. I would love to see more of that. We are beautiful and fashion forward. QSM: What is your usual everyday style? Juanita: This is a funny question, I am so glad it’s getting a tad bit cooler in Florida because now I can wear my hoodies. I love a great jean, pump, and a graphic tee if I am having with the family. I can change like a chameleon. My go to is always a great face. If I have a natural beat face, I feel like I am wearing Versace even if I am wearing sweats. QSM: Nudity in fashion; what are your thoughts? And would you do a nudity shoot? Juanita: I feel nudity its for artistic purposes. We are in a digital age where nothing disappears. A beautiful pregnancy shoot is lovely. Creating a beautiful piece of art, with shadows and imagery that can leave somethings up to the imagination is what I appreciate. I would have to dig deep down and find the confidence for a shoot like that. QSM: Where can people follow you? Juanita: People can follow mw on FB: Juanita Chandler IG: Magikally_Delicious Twitter: AuthorJuanitaC Snapchat: Juanitad74 Tiktok: @the_prototype_nitac Photographer | John Staples @jbms1photographyllc Model | Juanita Chandler @IG Magikally_delicious Hair and makeup done by model Green Pant Suit | @weareivypark Bag | @ weareivypark Glasses | @youseeiteyewear Shoes | @stevemadden

EPIC FASHION MOMENTS: TAKE A BRIEF PEEK AT THE EVOLUTION OF UNDERWEAR WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM|JANUARY 2021 ISSUE
THE EVOLUTION OF UNDERWEAR | BRANDPOINT
From tag-free boxer briefs and seamless bikinis to weightless cotton fabrics and moisture wicking technology, there’s a go-to type of underwear for everyone. Influenced by notable pop culture moments and the evolving fashion industry, underwear styles have taken huge leaps throughout the years. Fruit of the Loom, the trusted underwear brand for over 160 years, is looking at the pivotal transformations of underwear, one of the most essential pieces of clothing.
styles, hence the game-changing bikini and thong. Named after twopiece swimsuits, the bikini featured a moderate rise and coverage to offer the ultimate comfort and purchasing a pair that matched the bra became the epitome of counterculture fashion. As pin-up models and calendar girls turned into runway models, thongs entered the scene eliminating panty lines while offering a higher cut to reveal more hip and thigh.
1920s: Creating flexible fits was vital for both men’s and women’s undergarments. Inspired by the shorts worn by professional fighters, boxers, now one of the most common styles for men, were created to provide men and athletes with flexibility and total freedom of movement. For women, an all-in-one revolutionary undergarment style called step-ins were introduced. Similar to the modern-day romper, step-ins are a onepiece undergarment that combine a camisole and bloomers, high-waisted loose cotton underpants.
1990s: Comfort soon became a top priority as shoppers sought essential underwear for the ultimate softness and durability. Combining the length of boxers and the snug fit of briefs, the boxer briefs were introduced and soon became the most popular selection for men. Providing men with ventilation and the perfect amount of support, the first boxer briefs included elastic waistbands for ultimate comfort. Seeking comfortable yet flattering options, boy shorts became popular for women as an alternative to a traditional slip.
1930 - 1940s: Functionality was the dominant factor for men when selecting underwear during this era, while women focused on style. For colder months, union suits, similar to the modern-day “onesie,” evolved from the ones that emerged in the 1800s to provide both men and women an extra layer of warmth. Then, a new type of underwear inspired by an iconic postcard of a model donning a bikini-style bathing suit broke through for men: the classic cotton briefs. These legless, cotton briefs, featured Y-fronts to allow better movement and all-day support.
2000s - present day: With new technology continually evolving, underwear has changed and provided men and women with many different options such as functionality, material, shape and design. Now more than ever, shoppers are seeking style, comfort and quality at great value. For example, Fruit of the Loom offers a wide selection of underwear styles for the entire family, one of the most notable is its Breathable underwear for both men and women made of micro mesh fabric that promotes airflow to keep you cool. With moisture wicking technology to distribute sweat away from the skin, the popular underwear is the go-to selection to keep you dry throughout the day.
On the other hand, tight fitting corsets or girdles and decorative lingerie were popular among many women as they embraced shapewear, pulling inspiration from retro pin-up models. 1960s - 1970s: Women continued to celebrate their bodies and personal

Soul-stirring vocalist, recording artist and motivational speaker E’ssential is singing new life into the R&B genre with her latest soul empowerment single, Everyday Luv, which speaks to the turbulence we see in cities across America, offering a mellifluous, engaging remedy. The exciting new music video of Everyday Luv, featuring S. King and produced by B. Luv released on August 4, 2020, live on the Zoom videoconferencing platform. This virtual event was hosted by Chandra Gore of Medium.com. The video’s imagery, taken straight from today’s headlines, emphasizes unity, love, and the positive effect of both within the growing Black Lives Matter movement. The video is an uplifting interlude with a message of healing we all need to hear in these challenging times. A descendant of the legendary ragtime pioneer Scott Joplin, E’ssential continues her family legacy of bringing greatness in music to audiences everywhere. Along the way, she’s worked with many of the top names in the industry, opening for a plethora of luminaries, including Anthony Hamilton, Jill Scott, Mc Lyte, Fred Hammond, Karen Clarke-Sheard, LL Cool J, Mary Mary, Dawkins & Dawkins, Trinitee 5:7, at such storied venues as Summerfest and Bastille Days. A BMI-accredited songwriter, E’ssential has redefined music production, executive producing, and releasing international hits like So Fly, Zero Pursuit, and her most recent single, the nonpareil Win-Win and its a companion video, which is a rousing tour de force of contemporary dance. Her music showcased within the new Everyday Luv video brings to vivid life the realities of struggle, passion, and redemption in a way that captures the hearts of all who discover her gifts. Building on her growing successes, E’ssential is pushing forward with her eagerly awaited EP, LuvLifeLive, a timely follow-on to her first solo album I’m Ready Now. This soaring debut album is a parable of empowerment, as stirring as it is restorative. FEATURED STORY
QSM: E’ssential…. What a dope name. Is this your birth given name? E’ssential: Why thank you! Not my government but it’s another one of my Mommie Joplin’s bomb creations, she came up with it. My first name is Elaine which means “light” so when you say them together, Elaine E’ssential, you’re declaring that the light is necessary to drive out darkness! Talk about a setup from above.
control over how the writer chose to write the article, I left it there but it taught me a valuable lesson cause ain’t nobody got time for that. I pray about everything, my collabs, the producers I work with, my moves, those I choose to partner up with, everything! I am attentive to vibes and listen with discernment to the Holy Spirit, I have learned to never ignore that gut feeling; it truly guides us.
QSM: You have an amazing voice. You have sang with some heavy hitters; how long have you been singing professionally? E’ssential: Aww you got a Black girl blushing, much appreciated. I can’t tell you how many times I get off stage like wow, thank you Lord, just amazed at the opportunities! I’ve been singing as long as I can remember. It all began in the children’s choir back in the church house in Milwaukee, WI. Most soul singers start there, it’s where we learn how to harmonize, sing with others and work our charm on the crowd. Ha I swear it’s the best practice! Professionally I began recording and was set to tour in my high school years. This has been a long, hard but very rewarding journey.
QSM: During our last conversation, you and I talked about you being brought up and being rooted in the church. I related to that so much. In life, most of us who have been bought up in the church had to learn to “come back home” (lol) so to speak. Was there ever any times in your life when you found yourself straying from the church and/ or your beliefs? For those that would like to check out our last discussion via YouTube, here is the link https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=hQiKDORCUTY&t=2s E’ssential: Oh absolutely, we had such a good time too Queen! After the guilt of my first marriage failing I ran into this tall, dark charmer that swept me out of my mind. I mean really had me going and doing all sorts of crazy thangs (lol) you see, all was fun and giggles until I found myself drifting away to a very dark isolated place. I was vulnerable and very open to attack as I was the farthest away from what I knew was implanted in me at a young age and what was right, in my heart I knew I was running from God’s will for my life but I fought it. In my disobedience to the Lord, I began to be abused by this same charmer and dove deep into depression. I’m talking so deep I was scared to leave and really believed no one would ever love me like I loved them. Whew, I had to get my life together and remember how valuable I was and to get back to loving me again and most importantly my first love, my Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. I now choose His leading for my life without reluctance, because I know He knows what’s best for me! I will never forget what living in disobedience cost me. I almost lost it all, including my life! So pardon me while I celebrate my exodus out of that tough time period. Today I’m in my right mind and strength and have a beautiful healthy marriage and love life now, our children are good and we give the Lord the glory for it all. One of the many reasons why my life’s mantra is LuvLiveLife, we only get one!
QSM: Have you had any unpleasant experiences working with any other professionals in your field? You don’t have to mention the names, just give us the tea (lol). E’ssential: Oh absolutely, it comes with the territory. Creatives are humans first, we are different in nature already, so we will never see eye to eye all the time. I can recall a time when I had an idea to invite artists I worked with to collaborate on my first Christmas Album compilation. We were rocking and on schedule, I got some dope productions from friends of mine, in the studio sessions and knocked it out in a few weeks. We were really grinding and working up to a giveback release concert during Christmas time that year. You would find us out in the streets promoting, handing out flyers, singing with the people, giving radio and newspaper interviews letting everyone know who had an ear, what was coming. I can recall one of the artist’s reactions to the article posted in a popular newspaper then, and how she felt I persuaded the article writer to highlight only me, which I didn’t. It was petty, silly and immature to think someone like me who brought this artist in with the giving heart I have, actually thought I would do that. QSM: AMEN… What a testimony! Are you a fulltime recording artist or do you have another job? E’ssential: Being a Soul Empowerment Music Recording artist is my life’s work, a ministry if you will. Let’s call this schedule, Life-time (lol). Aside from my musical career I also own multiple businesses but one in particular a transportation company here in Virginia, which I’m so proud of. The transportation industry is a beast fit for this loud and proud Black Queen, and all that comes with it, ha. Speaking of being a Queen, you know we have to wear many hats, a diversified life is the only way to live. Nowadays I feel I need an additional virtual teaching check though (lol) Virtual school with a 4yr old is insane and hilarious all at the same time. QSM: With all that you do professionally, and personally; what does a typical day look like for you? E’ssential: Early mornings, late nights. After God, Comes family. I strive daily to be the best Wife, Mommie and nurturer I can be, then the business gets taken care of throughout each day. You know calls, paying bills, cooking, checking on contracts, checks and balances all while managing the household. I can’t forget to call my Mommie everyday either otherwise she’ll hit me with the “did you forget something?” call later in the afternoon. (lol) Love my family, the Joplin’s, to pieces! I’m also a planner by nature and I believe in goal setting, achieving and also squeezing in some “me” time with some retail therapy, a mani/ pedi and/or playing Xbox with my sisters, writing songs and journaling. QSM: Do you write your own songs? E’ssential: Yes I do, about 99% of my material I wrote. Gotta give the 1% up to the few who understand my viewpoint of artistry and are amazing writers as well QSM: When you are mentally stuck; where do you pull your inspiration from? E’ssential: Honestly, my life is so bursting with energy and the loving people close to me that I rarely ever have writers block. I can be inspired by a plane trip, a ride down the road, a conversation or impromptu music session with my hilariously creative daughters or other family members. It always seems to start with the groove and how it makes me feel, matters of my heart and what others go through too. That’s what Soul Empowerment Music represents, songs from my soul to yours. I felt it first, this is personal!

to keep Him at the head of our marriage, it’s what we call a “Win-Win”! QSM: Your children are also entertainers, if my memory serves me correct? Tell us about them. E’ssential: Yes! They are such beautifully talented and free creatives. I see so much of me in them, it’s scary. (lol) A&A Nation, Amarii Lailah & Ayanna Nicole. Watch out world these soon to be child authors, actresses, singers and dancers love the camera and it loves them back. Stay tuned their very own website, YouTube channel and book release are coming soon!
QSM: Speaking of family. Your husband is on some of your tracks singing with you. Which is super dope by the way. How did you meet your husband? E’ssential: Ahh yes that’s my super humble and very talented preacha man hubby. He actually found me, as a King should. We first met back in our adolescent years in church (lol) he was the drummer and I was singing in the children’s choir. What’s funny is back then yeah I thought he was cute but who didn’t, he was such a charmer and we were too young anyway. Later, we reconnected in our high school years as friends but he was still this ladies’ man which turned me off a bit. So we both went our own way again and reconnected after experiencing failed first marriages. This time, he flat out told me I was his wife and he wasn’t letting me get away again. I was conflicted at first, like but you’re bro bro though (lol) but I eventually gave in and after 6 short months of dating we tied the knot. Now here we are, about to celebrate 6 years of marriage and doing the work to make it last. Oh but it hasn’t always been perfect, in fact it got so hard at times we almost let go. Thank God we really do have genuine love for one another and vow

QSM: What would you say has been your most satisfying moment in your career so far? E’ssential: What satisfies me most is the ability to create the music that reminds the listeners of their royalty, and how it reaches folks under the surface. Music that isn’t typical mainstream but music with relatable inspiration and substance that helps folks overcome obstacles and celebrate life’s moments. I’ve done the huge arena shows and had the pleasure of singing with/and opening for some legends but nothing satisfies me more than the people’s responses and how it makes them feel. It makes my soul proud to know that how it hit me, it reached and helped them in a similar way. QSM: Major congratulations on starting your own label. That is a huge deal. What are some of the pros and cons on having your own label? E’ssential: Aww thank you. My very own label E’ssential Music Entertainment, is another baby of mine. A few pros of having my own label is that I get to call the shots and have full creative control of my works. I love being an Indie artist because of this. The downside can sometimes be that I must complete all paperwork myself which gets tedious at times. Additionally I would have to add the lack of an unlimited budget can also slow up how I want to creatively bring my projects to life. It takes big bucks for the types of dreams I have. Like my Granny Jones, rest her soul used to say, I’m just waiting on my pocketbook to catch up with what I need to do! (lol) Overall I’m just so proud of my accomplishments and am looking to sign artists with a similar vision in the near future. QSM: If you had the opportunity to collaborate with three artists, who would they be? E’ssential: This is so hard! Brandy, PJ Morton, Musiq Soulchild and so many more QSM: What would you say are the top three skills needed to be a successful entrepreneur? E’ssential: Put God first and prioritize everything, learn and become an expert in your industry/ craft, stay focused and determined and know that the race isn’t given to the swift nor the strong but to the one that endures to the end! QSM: I am super honored to have met you, even if it was virtually. You are so inspiring. Before I let you go. What is your all-time favorite song that you put out? E’ssential: Likewise Queen! Such an honor for you to have me, to God be the glory for it all! It was like we’ve known each other forever, like a sisterhood could genuinely come of this! Wine,

Wow! What a year it has been. 2020 shuck us to our core, 2020 changed the world as we knew it, 2020 robbed us of every plan we had in making it our year, or did it?? 2020 did change the world as we knew it, but was it all bad? For every terrible thing that happened, for every life lost, for every business that closed, and for every show turned virtual, it is important for us to dig deep to find our silver linings so we can plunge into 2021 headfirst, and go for what is already ours. Will things look different? No doubt, but how are we going to turn things around for the win??!! Every year we hear talk about New Year, New Me!! This year will be new for us all in 2021, but we can determine what that looks like. In all that we do, let’s consider others. Wear your masks, wash your hands, social distance, and don’t have large gatherings where guidelines can’t be enforced. Let’s live without being reckless in 2021! Shop and support your favorite brands, boutiques, and businesses online if necessary, dress in your fav looks of for the season, even with nowhere to go, grab your friends and close family, and love on them while being conscious, have that wedding while being creative, celebrate your born day with a twist, attend that fashion show to see the latest trends with restrictions. Let’s live responsibly and this will be a New Year for us all!

OVERCOMING WEIGHT INDUCED SOCIAL ANXIETY
Written by Nyemade Boiwu (African Butterfly)

It feels as though half of the country is still abiding by strict quarantine guidelines and the other half has returned to regular living. One of the benefits of things opening back up is that it gives us the opportunity to connect with family and friends we’ve missed. A downside is that as events and gatherings become in-person again it opens the door for social anxiety to return. This is especially true as we head into the New Year. Its great thinking about connecting with people but it also brings a certain level of stress. As someone who’s on the larger end of the plus size range, navigating social settings can be interesting to say the least. Most of the time I feel like I’m both the center of attention while being invisible at the same time. There’s something unnerving about feeling like all eyes are on you whenever you walk into a room. People think that we don’t see the elbow nudges or slight nods of their WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM|JANUARY 2021 ISSUE
heads as they try to get whoever they’re with to gawk at our size. It’s noticeable. Then, the initial wave of unwanted attention wears off, only to be replaced by a sense of invisibility. People tend to gravitate toward those they feel comfortable with, and often this does not include the largest person in the room. When they look around the room, their eyes slide right past us. It’s like people are afraid of “catching” fatness by association — one downside of treating fatness like it’s an epidemic. As Jeannine A. Gailey writes of this phenomenon in her book, The Hyper(in)visible Fat Woman: “If a community is dealing with an epidemic, it is expected and understood that members of that community will do everything in their power to prevent the spread of the disease. It becomes a public duty, as well as a personal responsibility. However, ‘obesity’ is not a communicable disease.”

For the longest time, as much as I wanted to experience new things, I would let the stares and silence hold me back from going out. Staying home was more comfortable. It was my “safe space” free from judgmental eyes and stares. As you can imagine, the more I stayed in, the harder it became to go out at all. I felt myself changing from an active, on-thego person to a complete homebody. It didn’t help that I was already living with depression and anxiety, both of which added an element of difficulty to being social, and now I found myself uninterested in socializing even when I did have the energy. Realizing that negative thoughts about my weight, rather than my depression and anxiety, more often what were stopped me from going out was the first inkling that I needed to change the way I saw myself. After hearing Cece Olisa’s advice: “Don’t wait on your weight to live the life you want,” I was inspired, and decided to start making changes. First, I was going to make a conscious effort to start living the life I wanted. Then and there I decided to stop caring what other people think and instead do what makes me happy. It was harder than it sounds, of course, but in a way it also was just that simple. I decided it. And I did it. Living this way has made me realize two interesting things: 1. People will talk anyway, whether I decide to care or not, and whether what they are talking about is negative or not. The thing that triggers them might be my size or it might be my fabulous outfit. When you’re fat, you’ve had enough negative experiences to justify assuming the worst, but I try to assume the best anyway. And even if it is the worst, and they really are talking about my size, I know that it’s their problem, and not mine.
47
2. People weren’t thinking about me nearly as much as I thought were. Of course, yes, some of the time they are thinking about me and my size, but my social anxiety had me convinced that every time I went anywhere everyone around me was talking about how big I am. I know I’m not alone in feeling caught between the extremes of being hypervisible and hyperinvisible at the same time. “Fat[ness] presents an apparent paradox because it is visible and dissected publicly; in this respect, it is hypervisible,” Gaily writes. “Fat is also marginalized and erased; in this respect, it is hyperinvisible.” I’ve managed my social anxiety in the face of marginalization and erasure by learning not to care if people talk or stare. It’s helped me unlearn those self-conscious thoughts and stop projecting my inner feelings onto others. That invisible feeling I mentioned wasn’t me being ignored as I interpreted it. Sometimes it was actually just people going back to their business. I’d become so self-conscious about my body that I was projecting my own inner feelings onto others before they ever had a chance to prove me wrong. As I mentioned earlier, I live with depression and general anxiety. While this can make being social difficult, there’s a difference between general anxiety and depression and social anxiety. According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America social anxiety is “an intense anxiety or fear of being judged, negatively evaluated, or rejected in a social or performance situation.” My social anxiety developed out of an acute fear of how others viewed me because of my size. Not only that, I also worried about navigating my body in unknown spaces. Would all the chairs at the event have arms? Would the designated paths between tables or objects be too narrow?

According to a survey conducted by AllGo, 95% of plus size people experience anxiety when going somewhere new. So, if you’re experiencing similar feelings you’re not alone. Overcoming the anxious, fearful thoughts that were holding me back from living my best life wasn’t easy, but I know if I can, you can too. When you feel the urge to stay home instead of joining family and friends as the world slowly returns to “normal” here are some things that I found helpful: 1. Take some deep calming breaths. I know it probably sounds cliché, but it really helps. When the negative thoughts start rushing in, stop and breathe deep and slow. This helps your nervous system calm down before the panic spirals out of control. 2. Challenge your negative thoughts. As you’re taking those deep breaths, fuel your inner voice with positive thoughts. Yes, people want you there. Yes, you’ll have a good time. Your outfit is cute and you know it! Because the truth is, even if other people ARE being rude and doing or thinking the things you’re worried about that doesn’t change the fact that you have just as much right to be there as they do! 3. Reduce the size of the commitment you’re making. I find if I tell myself that I’m going to stay exactly an hour then it doesn’t seem as daunting as if I planned to stay indefinitely. Sometimes
WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM|JANUARY 2021 ISSUE
I find I’m enjoying myself so much that I stay longer, but when I don’t feel good in a social situation, knowing I already have an exit plan helps me feel better about my decision to go. It helps me remain in control of the situation, rather than having a new experience turn into a self-fulfilling prophecy ending with me throwing my hands up and saying, “I decided to go out of my comfort zone and now look at what’s happening.” 4. When you do go out, take a moment to feel proud of yourself. Going out might not be a big deal for some people but, for those of us with social anxiety, it is, especially in a world that often erases us for the size of our bodies. So, the fact that you did it is awesome. Congratulate yourself because you deserve it. 5. Remember: The more you do it, the easier it’ll get. I can’t say that it’s always easy, or that I don’t still have moments of self-doubt. I definitely do. However, incorporating the tips above helps me push through and come out the other side feeling proud of myself instead of stressed out and anxious. Your size doesn’t define who you are, so don’t let it control your life. You deserve to live life to the fullest. So, make sure you’re wearing your mask and practicing social distancing but don’t let your anxiety stop you from enjoying the world as things open back up!

6 QUESTIONS TO ASK WHEN TAKING YOUR BUSINESS ONLINE
Whether you run a solo small business, or your business is moving from brick-and-mortar to e-commerce, you’ve likely got a long to-do list - and you may not know where to start. Or if your business is already online, you may be trying to improve your website and stand out from the competition. Do you have the skills and know-how to make that happen? Not everyone does. Chances are, you know a lot about your products or services, but not necessarily how to promote your business and run it successfully using today’s digital tools. And due to the pandemic, increasing your online presence and running your business virtually has become even more crucial. According to survey data released by Fiverr, 49% of U.S. small and medium-sized businesses are optimistic about their future prospects after the lockdown has passed, but not surprisingly, nearly a quarter (22%) of them do plan to increase their digital marketing spend as a result of COVID-19. If you’re one of the many entrepreneurs trying to figure out your next steps for taking - or optimizing - your business online, here are some questions to ask:
WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM|JANUARY 2021 ISSUE
6 QUESTIONS TO ASK WHEN TAKING YOUR BUSINESS ONLINE | BRANDPOINT
1. What are you selling? Are you selling a product or a service? This makes a difference in how you run your business. Can your business happen virtually (if it’s a service), or do you have to manage manufacturing, inventory and shipping on top of marketing and advertising, online ordering and finances?
2. Do you need your own website or online store? Many small businesses can succeed - or at least start out - by selling products on an existing platform like Etsy or Amazon, rather than creating their entire online store from scratch. But it may not be as hard to build your own site as you think.
3. What do you need on your website? What will best serve your business? “About” and “Contact Us” pages? Do you want to include a blog? Customer testimonials and special promotions for new clients? Do you need a catalog of products and services? Does your business need to include a list of services, rates and shipping costs? Making a list of what your business needs is a useful starting point for whoever you hire to help build your website.
4. What web templates do you see working best for your business? Are you familiar with WordPress, Wix and Squarespace? Which would be the best to suit your particular business?
5. What type of content do you want to see on your site?
51
Would you like to see custom-made illustrations or animation? Stock or custom photography? How about videos?
6. How do you make sure customers can find your website? There’s a lot of competition out there. Unless you’re well-versed in SEO and how Google algorithms work, you may not know how to build an online presence others can find using a web search. Some entrepreneurs find the thought of putting their business online daunting, but with an expert in your corner, it can be simple and hassle-free. Fortunately, there’s a service that can help you find the right talent to create a web presence that really reflects your unique brand: Fiverr is a platform connecting businesses of all sizes with skilled freelancers offering digital services in over 400 categories including graphic design, digital marketing, programming, video and animation. You can view professionals according to their skills, along with ratings, reviews and cost of the service you need. And now there’s a new tool to make it even easier to get started building a website for your business - Fiverr’s The Shift. This new resource hub includes a website developer matching experience that will match you with a verified, highlyrated professional specializing in web design and development. For those new to creating a website, the matched talent will act as a guiding force throughout the website creation process. On The Shift hub, you can also browse inspiring case studies, read stories about how businesses have transformed their digital presence and get tips from helpful blogs, podcasts and many other useful resources for small and medium-sized business owners across all industries.
