FROM THE DESK OF Tawana Blassingame Founder & Editor in Chief
Welcome to the September 2020 issue of Queen Size Magazine. THE KING SIZE ISSUE When we initially created QSM, it was all about the plus size ladies. But as the industry evolved, we realized that the big and tall men also shared some of the same issues that we did. They too struggled with lack of confidence because of their size. They too struggled (and still do) with finding quality clothing to fit them properly. They too understand that there are not enough opportunities for “us”. So why not make room for them in our pages as well? As of January 1st of 2018 we’ve officially gone co-ed. We have made space for big and tall men to showcase themselves along with plus size models. But once a year we dedicate an entire issue just to them. With that being said, this issue is all about the Big and Tall Men. In this issue, our cover model, Michael Moss discusses why he started his brand and the importance of helping big and tall men look & feel good in what they wear. We also sat down with some of your favorite big and tall professionals in the industry to discuss how/why they got started in the industry and what they would like to see changed. I love this time of the year. As with every issue, I truly thank each and every person that had a hand in making Queen Size Magazine possible. And on behalf of myself and Queen Size Magazine, I would like to thank all of our readers; without you we would not still be here. We would love to hear your feedback. Email us at queensizemagazine@gmail.com and let us know what you like, don’t like and/or want to see in future issues. We value your opinion.

Do you spend summer days outdoors mowing the lawn, tending to the garden and working on the house? Here are a few steps you can take to help you care for and protect your skin as you complete your seasonal chores: DRESS RIGHT: A few wardrobe considerations go a long way. Opt for long, lightweight clothing in light colors, which can protect your skin from sun exposure while keeping you cool. Sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat can provide further coverage. If possible, arrange to spend the bulk of your time outdoors either before 10 in the morning or after 4 in the afternoon to avoid exposure while the sun’s rays are at their strongest. DON’T FORGET THE SPF. Apply sunscreen and a lip balm containing SPF before heading outdoors. Reference the bottle’s instructions to ensure you are reapplying as-needed. Dermatologists recommend an SPF of 30 or higher for extended outdoor activity. For lawn care and gardening, you should also be on the lookout for a product that’s resistant to sweat. PROMOTE RESILIENCE: There are many outdoor elements that produce free radicals, such as sun exposure and pollution, and exposure to these free radicals can have harsh effects on the body. To help protect and maintain healthy, youthful-looking skin, consider incorporating Heliocare Daily Use Antioxidant Formula into your morning routine. In a survey conducted by Ferndale Healthcare Inc. between Nov 2019 and Feb 2020, of 923 U.S. dermatologists, more than half personally use Heliocare, and 87 percent of these experts recommend it to their patients. “I tell all my patients who ask me how to maintain their skin’s youthful appearance to consider taking Heliocare, particularly if they spend a lot of time outdoors,” says New York City dermatologist, Dr. Rachel Nazarian. The antioxidant-rich proprietary extract in Heliocare, Fernblock PLE Technology, has been studied for over 25 years by leading dermatologists. To learn more and to access additional skin care information, visit heliocare.com. ADOPT HEALTHY HABITS: Drinking plenty of water and ensuring you are getting electrolytes can help regulate the balance of fluid in the body for healthy-looking skin. Also, be sure to get a great night’s sleep. Not only do you deserve it after a hard day of work, but sufficient sleep is beneficial to skin health. This summer, treat your skin right while working in the yard. Take steps to protect it from the inside out.

aptivating audiences with his diverse style, Nicholas Alexander is a multi-faceted performer, architect of conversation & sound, equipped with a wealth of knowledge that spans decades and demographics. Raised in the thriving metropolitan area of Greensboro, NC, Nicholas’ career began as a stage actor with Rhabi Rites Productions portraying characters that raised awareness, encouraged dialogue, and showed his diversity as a performer. While establishing a name in the performing arts, Nicholas was inspired and empowered to lend his offbeat blend of motivation, honesty, and humor to radio, thus Nicholas D At Night (N.D.A.N) was born. Named one of the top personalities and college radio shows in the country, N.D.A.N became home to the acclaimed, Cocktails and C.O.N.V.O.S, an evening of casual conversation where no topic is off limits. Being a master at expanding his own abilities and creating horizons he became a Big & Tall model in 2017. Nicholas has been showcased in several prominent shows in the mid-Atlantic and southeast regions. The main reason why Nicholas chose to be a big and tall model was simply “I felt like there wasn’t enough representation for men of color yet alone men 280 plus. I wanted to defy those odds and show even at 280 plus you can still be sexy for a big guy”. With a deep appreciation for the arts and creative expression and the motto “Be so good they can’t ignore you” at the helm of his career, Nicholas Alexander is defining success on his own terms. His work ethic and entrepreneurial spirit spawns from a place of personal transparency, combining advocacy and artistry for the urban community and beyond. AT-HOME ACNE MISTAKES TO AVOID | BRANDPOINT
13
AT-HOME ACNE MISTAKES TO AVOID Spending more time at home has shifted the way we solve our problems. More than ever, people are turning to online platforms and social media, like YouTube and Instagram LIVE, as primary resources for mastering new skills and finding solutions. However, some problems are more complicated than a quick fix howto video, especially when it comes to treating acne. If you have started to break out or noticed your acne has worsened over the past few months, there is a good chance that heightened stress levels are a factor. “Stress increases hormone levels to prepare our bodies for that environment. The same hormones can impact the skin, leading to an increase in oil production which causes breakouts,” explains Dr. Joshua Zeichner, Director of Cosmetic and Clinical Research in Dermatology at the Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. It also could be from wearing a face mask, says Dr. Zeichner. “We know that wearing a face mask has several negative impacts on the skin. Direct friction can lead to irritation, inflammation, and even promote acne breakouts.” With breakouts accelerating and in-office visits on pause, a DIY approach to treating acne has surged, with people testing solutions at home. “There’s a downside to experimenting with too many products because more often than not it leads to skin irritation. This can cause more harm than good in treating acne,” says Dr. Zeichner. “If you develop skin irritation while using multiple products, it may not be easy to figure out which product is the culprit. Plus, you won’t know if one product is blocking penetration or breaking down the other one.” To un-do the DIY damage, Dr. Zeichner shares the best tips to clearer skin:
* Keep it simple: If you notice breakouts and irritation including flakiness, inflammation, redness or burning, it’s likely you’re over doing it with your skincare routine. Pare down the number of products you’re using to eliminate the cause of the irritation. Your routine doesn’t need to be complicated to be effective. A cleanser, an Rx product if your dermatologist deems appropriate and a moisturizer is a simple and effective regimen. Also, remember to always wear sunscreen to protect your skin. * Consistency is key: Once you’ve simplified your routine, be sure to stick with it for 6-8 weeks to allow time for the products to work. * Consider a prescription product: If you’re suffering with acne over an extended period of time and over the counter products aren’t getting the job done, you may need a prescription option from your dermatologist. One product I often prescribe is ALTRENO® (tretinoin) Lotion, 0.05%. As a topical retinoid it increases collagen production and regulates skin cell turnover to help with the prevention and treatment of acne. This medication is an effective option for many patients to treat acne, which can result in long-lasting marks or even permanent scars on the face if left untreated. As an added bonus, ALTRENO is available via delivery through national in-store or online pharmacies. ALTRENO may cause irritation or other side effects. To learn more visit www.altreno.com. * Listen to the experts: If you can’t get an in-person appointment right now, you’ll find many board-certified dermatologists are sharing helpful tips, tricks and product recommendations daily on social media and through virtual appointments. Tutorials and peer forums are useful, but if you aren’t seeing the results you want, reach out to an expertthey’ll find a way to connect with you.

Have you ever wondered how your favorite male model achieved such pretty smooth blemish free skin? Well wonder no more because he’s probably wearing makeup. More men are wearing makeup then you think. It has become a part of the male grooming system. It is no longer a taboo or uncommon for male models, public figures or celebrities to wear makeup. As a Makeup Artist, I have been hired on several occasions to make up men for photoshoots ranging from clothing brands to book covers. We’re not just talking about your Beauty Boys with full on glam, we’re talking about your average male who needs to look camera ready. The next time you watch your favorite television show look at the males actors, I am almost certain they are wearing makeup. The beauty industry has expanded and men are taking a part, they too are looking for that perfect foundation or concealer shade. So Queens don’t be surprised if the favorite male in your life asks you to assist him in the Beauty department. Queens I would like to end on a note of encouragement; as we continue to work through a very difficult season. Make the best of the season you are in. Just know that all seasons change and this too shall pass. Stay encouraged. Love you, smooches Lala Sanyang

Getting to know Michael QSM: Who is Michael Moss? Tell us at least 3 things we should know about the man behind the brand. Michael: A God Fearing, Result Driven man who is passionate about seeing the potential in other people. Born in North Carolina, I moved to Georgia to attend Graduate school in 2003 and never left. QSM: Which leads us to this next question. What is the story behind the name Big Man Culture? Michael: My father was 6ft, 6inches, 290lbs and was given the nickname BIG MAN. He took pride in presenting the best version of himself and the clothes he wore. He was my inspiration in adulthood to mimic. I added the cultural aspect to the business as a way to encompass all parts of lifestyle to the business. QSM: When did you decide to enter the fashion Industry? What was the ultimate motivation? Michael: I started styling friends and then became serious about it in 2010. That led me into involving myself into fashion shows, events, etc. But then I realized that there was no representation from the Big and Tall community. So the motivation began with styling, then to custom clothes and services that were offered to the Big and Tall Community. QSM: What made you decide to start your own fashion line? Why was it important to bring it to the runway? Michael: Every brand starts from an idea. The idea led to understanding the lack of fashionable pieces for men my size. And with many friends and family members who
struggled with the same issue finding options, it was important to take my ideas and translate them into tangible products and items for those individuals. That later progressed into bringing it to the runway to display to others what options we have and show the importance of custom clothing QSM: What does your line/services consist of? Why is tailoring pieces so significant? Michael: We offer custom clothes, styling services, closet renovations, Culture Classes and more! We stress tailoring because a tailored piece of clothing is specifically made for your body. So it will look great for your body. That’s why it is so important. QSM: What is the average cost of your items/ services? Michael: Most of our services are “custom” made and specific for each client. So our services are based upon the client’s requests. We offer custom clothes, styling services, closet renovations, and more. QSM: We know Big Man Culture is more than a fashion line it’s a lifestyle, tell us more? Michael: That is one of the reasons we added the word Culture to the name. There are lifestyle elements that complement our style and fashion. So it is important for us to incorporate those elements into the company and all of the services that we offer. We also have expanded to the BMC Group to connect with other lifestyle brands and products. That also includes events, fashion shows, and brand representation.

QSM: What does it mean or look like for Big Man Culture to Redefine the Standard? Michael: The perception of Big Men has always been that we are sloppy, cannot dress well, and are not well kept. The gentlemen that represent Big Man Culture are honestly offended by that perception and our goal is define what the true standards are of REAL MEN! The way we dress, groom, and present ourselves is important in this world and our job is to present a standard for men to mimic. QSM: We know that you’re a family man, how do you balance work, family, play? Michael: It’s not easy, but the balance comes from having a great team in all areas so that I can focus on what’s important, Family!

QSM: Is there any room on your plate to take on any more endeavors? What’s next? Michael: Always! However, it must be something well planned out as calculated risk are the focus for any business endeavors now. With the unprecedented times that we are in, it has to make sense for the business and the Culture! QSM: We absolutely love all that you do for Big and Tall men both on and off the runway. Please keep up the great work. Any final thoughts? Let people know where they can find you. Michael: Thanks for the opportunity and we appreciate you sharing the work that we have done to for the Culture! www.bigmanculture.com the links to all our social media can be found on our site as well.

QSM: How did you get started in pageantry? Rafael: I get into it myself after my daughters competed in pageants. QSM: What were the responses when you told family and friends you were competing? Rafael: They were very supportive. They encouraged me and told me that I should go for it. QSM: Do you believe there is a stigma against men competing in pageants? If so, how have you combated that stigma? Rafael: There is but, I don’t worry about that. I know who I am, and I am very confident in myself. It’s a great opportunity for men to compete and even win! QSM: What would you say has been your biggest achievement in pageantry? Rafael: My biggest achievement in pageantry was being selected as the Executive Producer for Miss Plus America. QSM: Do you think men competing in pageants will become mainstream? Rafael: I believe so, we are having an opportunity to change the view of one’s perception, one pageant at a time! Kings have Crowns too. QSM: What would you tell a man looking to explore pageantry? Rafael: I would tell them to Go for it! QSM: Has the COVID-19 pandemic affected your work producing pageants? Rafael: Mostly definitely, it slowed down the industry to the max as far as producing, directing and judging. But I am praying for a change in the next few months. QSM: What kind of legacy would you like to leave in pageantry? Rafael: My passion towards pageantry, C.I.E. Caring, Inspiring and Encouraging Women and Men to be all they can be in pageantry. You can do it!

EUSTACE COLLENS JR.
It’s been almost two years since I came back into the fashion industry. I must say I am starting to see that the industry is now starting to pay attention to the Big and Tall community and The Silver Fox and men and women models. They are now featured more in magazines, blogs, and there are several workshop classes that are being provided. However there is still not enough diversity in the fashion industry, especially on fashion week. The fashion industry has failed to cast a decent amount of Big and Tall models, Curvy models, and Silver Fox models. It seems to be a shortage of designers that are willing to dress them. I recently had a shark tank moment where I was able to talk to the F.U.B.U. co-founders Daymond John and Carl Brown. Did you know that they have a suit line? Their suits are great, but no one really knows about it. I explained to them the need for the big and tall men and curvy women to be dressed by them. I want to see our curvy women in a power suit, looking like the strong Independent woman that they are. I want to see our big and tall men in a tailored suit looking dapper and not swimming in their clothes. Streetwear for the big men are cool, but we know that they can clean well and can be debonair. I was surprised that they listened and agreed with me. But talk is cheap, so let’s see what happens.
There is a negative stigma and misconception about all the above mentioned fashion types. A lot of designers are quick to dress a slimmer and younger model not realizing that the other groups of models spend money, are dedicated to whomever dress them, can afford and will buy an outfit that has been fitted for them. What designers and advertising agencies fail to realize is that they have a broader audience. We are not waiting to have a seat at the table; we are setting our own tables and creating our own lanes. We now have award shows that recognize our work and accomplishments. Now we need to build our own agencies. I am so honored and proud to be part of the movement that is bringing diversity to the industry. They say there is strength in numbers. My greatest accomplishment coming back into the industry is helping others to for fulfill their dreams. There is no such thing as you are too big, too short, and too old to follow your dreams. I was once asked if I had a chance to go back in time what I would change. I wouldn’t change anything or give myself any new advice. I do believe that everything good or bad in the past has help to shape me into becoming the man I am now. You learn from your mistakes, which is the best teacher. STAY THIRSTY MY FRIENDS! I’ve always had a passion for Fashion. For me it was how I expressed myself. I started off as being a stylist; putting together different looks for some of my friends, and family members. However, I always thought I could be doing more. I thought to myself why not try and model, so I did. I remember feeling very uncomfortable. I didn’t look like the other male models. I would show up to different model calls and think to myself why am I here. I second guessed myself all the time. I would always feel anxious when I arrived. I barely talked to anyone; I just felt out of place. Their physique was a lot different than mine and every male magazine that I’ve ever seen had models that all looked the same. I remember going to different model calls and being told that they had already picked the models that they needed and would contact me later for another show they were planning. I heard this story so many times and I became discouraged and stopped modeling for a while. Many of my friends would continue to ask me to assist them with styling photoshoots and fashion shows, so I did. I then began networking and ran into a couple of people who inspired me and gave me a chance. I can remember having a conversation with one of my close friends about modeling. She told me that if I was not confident with what I wanted to do, how could someone else take me serious. At this very moment it clicked. It was like a light bulb had gone off in my head and I knew exactly what I needed to do. For months I began practicing different walks and poses. I would look at multiple videos of male models walking and watch different WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM|SEPTEMBER 2020 ISSUE

tutorials about posing. After all the practicing and research, I was ready. I had built my confidence up and realized that I had to make them choose me. Since then, I have walked in different shows all over the U.S and have done many photoshoots. Although I’m not where I want to be, I’m far from where I used to be. During this journey I have met some great inspirational people who have guided me in the right direction towards achieving my goals. I’m learning new things daily and this has become a rewarding experience. Perfecting my walk and poses is something for me that will never stop. Being a plus size model to me is more than just being a model. There is someone right now in the same position that I once was. They are doubting their self because they don’t fit the description. I plan to bring confidence and awareness to the fashion industry that you don’t have to be a certain size to be considered a model. Throughout my modeling journey I plan to show other plus size models that they can still accomplish their dreams of being a model. I want other men with my physique to see me and be inspired. I want other plus size models to know that if there is a dream or goal that you want to achieve, go for it. Surround yourself with people who want you to make it just as bad as you do. Remember that there is always room for improvement. Never settle keep pushing regardless the circumstances that you may encounter. Don’t allow society or anyone else to hold you back or stop you from achieving your goals because you don’t fit that description. Make them change the description so that it fits you!

audience facing roles. Brands are starting to slowly catch up to the times, but there’s still a ton of work to be done in media; from film all the way down to journalism to better represent the diverse population of the world. We need to see wider representation across brands; more fitness brands showing their support and promotion of health at any size, more of the premium brands entering the body positive arena. Society is beginning to wake up to the need of inclusivity and these brands shouldn’t be exempt.

Tahge Benoit (IG - @Tahgeb) is a Big & Tall model born on the Caribbean island of Dominica. He currently resides in New York.
QSM: If you had the ability to snap your fingers and make one instant change in the fashion industry regarding bigger men what would it be? Tahge: If I could snap my fingers and make one change in the fashion industry, it would simply be for better representation across-theboard. That means producing comfortable/ on trend products for larger bodies and better representation in their ad campaigns, especially the ones marketed at the plus community. I’ve always felt that the fashion industry (and all other industries) would gain substantially from being more inclusive. QSM: Overall, how do you feel about the representation of plus size men in media? Tahge: I think that the lack of representation of plus size men in the media is highly deplorable at this point. It’s one of those things where I shouldn’t get excited to see a bigger guy in acting roles, or in ad campaigns or in any
QSM: Plus size women are often concerned with being over sexualized for their bodies. Do you think this is a concern with big & tall men as well? If so, in what ways? Tahge: I can only speak from my personal experience here, but I haven’t found this to be an issue I’ve come across as a male model in the industry. I think it’s because there’s currently less of a demand for Big & Tall models in swimwear and underwear campaigns than there is for women, so that narrative has yet to appear for us. However, it doesn’t mean that it won’t be or that it isn’t a concern. QSM: Do you think your size has an impact on your mental health or insecurities? If so, in what ways? If not, how did you overcome it? Tahge: Growing up I definitely allowed my size to impact my mental health. I think more so, I allowed the image others had of me to dictate how I saw myself. It took me a while before I realized that my insecurities about my body stemmed from believing the opinions of others. Deep down I was fine with my body, and letting go of these titles others assigned to me (fat boy, big guy, etc ..) gave me room to title myself (confident, smart, and funny). QSM: What’s one “must know” piece of advice you’d give to other men or young boys trying to navigate this world in a larger body? Tahge: I think that men in larger bodies should know that it’s okay to feel. Allow yourself to feel the negative emotions, just don’t dwell on them. You are a resilient king and are able to conquer anything you want. Life isn’t going to be an easy ride and accepting the lows for what they are, makes a huge impact on appreciating the highs.”

BUSINESS under 5’9”, men with different curvy body parts. The men you do see are still a certain type of look or body type; our bodies are not the same and the models chosen don’t represent everyone. QSM: Plus size women are often concerned with being over sexualized for their bodies. Do you think this is a concern with big & tall men as well? If so, in what ways? Hollis: Hmmm. Big & Tall men and the industry are still up and coming, so you might not see it; however, it does exist in certain communities where B&T can be fetishized because of their height, bellies or curves in other body parts.

Hollis Kam (IG- @holliskam) is a Leadership Coach who focuses on self-love, body image and confidence. He creates experiences (coaching, intensives, and programs) that focus on the mental & emotional wellbeing of the community. He also does modeling as well.
QSM: If you had the ability to snap your fingers and make one instant change in the fashion industry regarding bigger men what would it be? Hollis: I guess it’s not one thing; however, they are related -- To have more options and sizes in traditional stores and for existing brands who cater to B&T to be in traditional stores. It’s hard to find your size in the stores; actually they started to pull back larger sizes and say you can purchase it online. I want to see and feel the clothing. QSM: Overall, how do you feel about the representation of plus size men in media? Hollis: I feel that there’s still a lot of work to do. You see the same faces over and over again. I am thankful and I honor those who were trailblazers, and there are a lot more faces in the industry. Also, we don’t see the diversity in body types, e.g. men WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM|SEPTEMBER 2020 ISSUE
QSM: Do you think your size has an impact on your mental health or insecurities? If so, in what ways? If not, how did you overcome it? Hollis: This is an interesting question based on my own experience and research. I do believe my past and present insecurities didn’t start with my size, it started with how I viewed myself based on other’s comments, what I saw in the media, how I was raised and even certain experiences. Then add in size, where I was made fun of, or felt like an outsider because I couldn’t find/fit clothes in the stores, and adding in diet and sex culture, where my body type was/is unwelcomed. So size added to my insecurities and it was easy enough to put the blame on what I can see on the outside because it can change quickly enough vs. really working on the inside. I do still have some insecurities; however, with the help of coaches and my tribe of friends/family, sprinkled with me doing the internal mental and emotional work of releasing, accepting, connecting and celebrating my full-self inside and out, I am more secure than ever. It takes a lot of work, it’s not the easiest or quickest kind and it’s the most important work that I’ve done! QSM: What’s one “must know” piece of advice you’d give to other men or young boys trying to navigate this world in a larger body? Hollis: You are handsome, phine, dapper, beautiful, bussin -- the way you are and be confident in who you are. Focus on your mental/emotional wellness along the way and build that tribe of people to help you walk your path. Also, you may not see folks who look like you in the media; however, you can rise up and break the mold/create a mold that is fluid. OK, maybe it’s more than one. :)

QSM: If you had the ability to snap your fingers and make one instant change in the fashion industry regarding bigger men what would it be? Mikey: The one instant change would be for every clothing store in the mall to have a robust Big and Tall Section in it!!! #That Part QSM: Overall, how do you feel about the representation of plus size men in media Mikey: We are definitely under represented, we are human beings that wear clothes. I feel media is so vain about looks and until they are EDUCATED they will never know how much revenue and good looks with charm that Big and Tall men have to showcase in their respected media highlights QSM: plus size women are often concerned with being over sexualized for their bodies. Do you think this is a concern with big & tall men as well? If so, in what ways? Mikey: I believe so. Because bigger men are categorized as sex symbols as well some folk love a big statured male so in a sense we can be oversexualized simply because we may turn someone on!
QSM: Do you think your size has an impact on your mental health or insecurities? If so, in what ways? If not, how did you overcome it? Mikey: It definitely does impact your mental health and can scar you. For me I still cringe at my body at times because I’ve been put down in the past for not having that rock hard body. People have been taught that the size of a person matters because it’s the only way that people can be attracted to you and I’ve learned that is simply not the case its what’s on the inside only that counts QSM: What’s one “must know” piece of advice you’d give to other men or young boys trying to navigate this world in a larger body? Mikey: That you need to only pay attention to what’s inside you. Having dreams yet to be fulfilled. Having a pure heart. Having peace about yourself that helps others to be at peace around you. Once you have that mastered then your body and whatever imperfections you think you may have would not bother you or make you feel less than. Be exactly who you are God Will take care of the rest!!!

QSM: Overall, how do you feel about the representation of plus size men in media? Earl: I love it, I also feel as if it’s being overlooked like a back page story at times. BIG & TALL Models brings a New Flavor to the industry that has been overlooked great talent as well as great people. The world is missing out on some amazing Male Models, that if given more opportunities would shine bright like the Beautiful Plus Size Queens Models. QSM: Plus size women are often concerned with being over sexualized for their bodies. Do you think this is a concern with big & tall men as well? If so, in what ways? Earl: Honestly, I don’t believe so. Big & Tall Models have been overlooked for a very long time now. In 2020, the world is appreciating Big & tall Men in all shape and Sizes. It’s been a Major journey for me.

Earl Lamar Clayton Junior (IG: @_i_ amlamar, YT: IAMLAMAR) was born in Orlando, Fl but raised in Apopka. He is an entrepreneur with several busiensses including: Truck Driver, Notary Signing Agent, Model, Trucking Company, YouTuber, and Blogger.
QSM: If you had the ability to snap your fingers and make one instant change in the fashion industry regarding bigger men what would it be? Earl: More support and exposure, Big and Tall is New but I feel that it’s more that we could do in regards to the industry as well as fashion shows. Full Figured Fashion Week opened my eyes to a New world of love and support (with no judgement) to be creative and free as possible.
QSM: Do you think your size has an impact on your mental health or insecurities? If so, in what ways? If not, how did you overcome it? Earl: Due to the fact that, I’ve played Football, Basketball and Track at high levels in the life, I’ve always kept in shape. Being more of a slimmer person, entering into the Big and Tall Community has allowed me to love and appreciate myself and my body when at times I didn’t want to even look into the mirror. Due the a major injury gain, I gained 40 pounds going from 230 to 270, when look at you different and the attention I was use too I wasn’t getting at a rate that I was used to, So it look sometime to learn to love and appreciate LAMAR again and Big and Tall Modeling guided me through that journey. QSM: What’s one “must know” piece of advice you’d give to other men or young boys trying to navigate this world in a larger body? Earl: Love yourself, and learn to appreciate the person that you’ve become. Yes, we all that flaws but getting up every morning, thanking god you’ve saw again day. SO, go out into the world and bless someone with your presence. There will never be another one of “YOU”! GOD took his time to make “YOU” unique and special in your own way. Go out to the world and give your gifts to the world and bless others who may or may not have had the opportunity to have a great day or has as many blessing as you have. But Look good while you do it, lol. You are Big & Tall!!! So.......... Go Be Great!!!!

Well no more of that shit, now it’s time for me to follow my true passion and help people who way I’ve been put on this earth too. In creating this site I wanted to create a site that would teach men how to dress for the person they are while helping them become the man they want to be.

fashion specifically men of color. So in the Spring of 2016 I decided that I was going to start XL Tribe; but I was too scared. So I sat on it for six months making all the excuses I could until there was no more left. In Sept 2016 I launched the site. QSM: Describe the XL Tribe brand for us? Kirklan: I would describe the XL Tribe brand as a space and a place where big and tall men of color can find themselves represented. Represented in fashion represented in culture and represented in photography. QSM: What can people find when they visit the XLTribe.com site. Kirklan: When someone comes to XLTribe.com they can find our weekly featured Tribesmen which is a guy that I feel like has great style and who I feel would be a great representation for people who come to the site looking for inspiration. On the site you will also find my outfit of the week which is where I put together an outfit from a brand that sells clothing for us Big &Tall men. I also provide the link to click on if you would like to purchase the item from the retailer.
QSM: Kirklan, it is always a pleasure when I get to chat with you. You are a model, a photographer, a content creator, and you also run a publication. Let’s talk about how you got started in the Fashion industry. Kirklan: Content creator came first for me. I became a content Creator because I did not see representation of big and tall men on most of the sites that I was reading about men’s

QSM: You have been blogging for how long now? Kirklan: Well as far as XL Tribe goes I’ve been blogging for four years but I’ve been blocking in general for 11 years. QSM: You’ve mentioned to me before that you haven’t always been as consistent with your blogging as you’d like. Why is that? Kirklan: Well blogging isn’t easy, it’s a talent that requires time. It comes with refusing to give up, it comes with crossing your I’s dotting your T’s. And that is definitely something that does not come easy to me.
BLOGGER SPOTLIGHT - KIRKLAN HAWES | QSM
QSM: What are some challenges have you’ve faced when providing content and/or resources for big and tall men? Kirklan: One of the biggest challenges that I faced is finding the balance between creating the type of content that I want to create versus creating the content that is going to move the people to either really like it or purchase it. QSM: What changes would you like to see? Kirklan: I think one of the major changes that I’d like to see is more Big & Tall shoe stores. I’d love to see more contemporary Fashion and on the trendy side I’d love to see an American brand with an American Cut make trendy clothes and not just the British brands or the UK brands. QSM: Let’s touch on your photography. When did you pick up a camera and why? Kirklan: I picked up the camera in early 2017 and my simple focus for that was creating stock content that would live on the XL Tribe site for whenever I was doing a blog post. That was the sole reason I purchased the camera. QSM: For anyone looking to get into content creation, what advice can you offer? Kirklan: For anyone looking to create content my personal advice would be create content from your heart and let people gravitate to it... meaning don’t create content with the sole focus of making money because it doesn’t work like that. Money will not keep you creating content for people; that’s why you see so many people decide to become a blogger and then they stop, because they realized it was harder than they thought. And they thought that is was going to be some quick & easy money but it’s not. QSM: For people who want to be featured on XLTribe.com how do they go about doing that? It is just for men correct? Kirklan: As far as being featured on XL Tribe

yes, it is meant just for men. I’m always keeping my finger on the pulse on social and in real life. Sometimes I tap people in real life and be like hey I think you’d be a good fit for my featured XL series let me get your email so I can send you over some information. However, I’m hand picking all of the people so for four years I’ve been hand picking every guy you see featured on our Tribesmen segment. QSM: Congrats on winning Blogger of the Year at the 2019 Full Figured Industry Awards. What was that moment like for you? Kirklan: Well thank you. The moment of winning the 2019 Full Figured Industry Awards Blogger of the Year meant to me that someone sees me and my little corner of the Internet and that I need to keep going harder. It felt like all of the hard work that I’ve been doing that I’ve been putting in someone sees it and it feels good to be noticed. QSM: What can we be on the lookout for next from Kirklan and XL Tribe? Kirklan: Well for XL Tribe you can definitely look out for our next featured digital series that we’ll be doing with the very popular Big & Tall brands so I’m excited about that. As far as me I’m continuing to push the envelope, I’m continuing to talk about issues that I feel are necessary in our community to move us forward. To continue to strive to be great and to keep my finger on the pulse. QSM: For those that want to book you where can people reach you? Or even to just support. Let people know your contact info and social media handles. Kirklan: If you want to book a shoot you can do that by going to XLShoots.com my social media handles are @XLTribe everywhere so that’s Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube.

WAYS YOUR FAMILY CAN CURE CABIN FEVER
It’s not always easy to be at home with kids day after day, but with a little creativity, you can beat cabin fever. Whether you’re in your own backyard or venturing out, there are plenty of things you can do to have fun together. Make sure to choose activities that are age-appropriate and that follow your current local guidelines for social distancing. Here are just a few things to try. Get out in nature Visit nearby parks or scenic areas for fresh air and exercise. Choose locations that aren’t crowded, so social distancing isn’t difficult. Bring toys for the kids, like balls, kites, hula hoops, scooters or bikes. WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM|SEPTEMBER 2020 ISSUE

Play tourist Pretend your car is a tour bus. Let Mom or Dad play tour guide first, modeling what to say (serious and/or funny). Drive by picturesque or unusual locations and make up the “tour” as you go along. Then let your kids take a turn narrating the “sights” as you drive. Plan a celebratory parade Have a friend or family member with a birthday, anniversary or graduation to celebrate? Plan a drive-by parade with a few other family groups in cars, complete with signs, streamers and balloons. Honk, wave and sing as you slowly pass their home.

Enjoy a treat with the family Take a tour to find the best shake, burger or kids meal toy.
You’d be amazed how much kids can appreciate their own yard, with just a little help.
For example, Sonic Wacky Pack Kids Meals come with a fun toy for kids. Through Aug. 2, kids age 3 and older will receive a collectible Hot Wheels Monster Truck exclusively at Sonic with their meal. Check out SonicWackyPack. com for free, downloadable activity packs that include coloring sheets, puzzles and games to entertain the kids while stuck at home.
* Create an obstacle course using large cardboard boxes, hula hoops, cones or other items from your garage.
Contactless ordering and payment are easy using the Sonic app: Just create and pay for your order in the app, drive to your nearby Sonic, and check in when you arrive via the app. A Sonic Carhop brings out your meal when it’s ready.
* Use sidewalk chalk to draw hopscotch and other games, plus pictures and hopeful messages for neighbors walking by.
Make washing the car an event
* Dig through your garage for neglected toys and games. When did your kids last play badminton or croquet? Or make your own games, like jump rope, cornhole or horseshoes, using household items. Search online for tips on crafting homemade games.
If there’s a touchless car wash nearby, young children will have a blast being in the car during the washing process. Turn up their favorite songs while you sit back and watch the suds and water do their work. Or you could involve the kids in washing the family car in your driveway. Go on a scavenger hunt Whether you’re walking or driving through the neighborhood, play “I Spy” or hunt for specific items - like a red car, a blue house, a large dog - or search for signs, rainbows or teddy bears in neighbors’ windows (a trend sweeping the nation while people are staying home). Make the most of your own yard

* Make bubbles with 1 part dish soap to 3 parts water, adding a little sugar (1-2 teaspoons). Stir the mixture gently. Use pipe cleaners or cut out the bottom of plastic water bottles to create wands.
* Find veggies or flowers your kids want to grow and involve them in gardening projects.
Take a trip down memory lane Scour your memory and ask grandparents about outdoor games from when you (or they) were children. Have grandparents explain how to play their games via phone or FaceTime. Then, video kids playing the games for the whole family to share! Spending time together, outside or in, creates special memories your kids will treasure as they grow up - making all your efforts worthwhile.
