My little family

I can’t believe it has been over two years since I last put pen to paper and featured in Living Healthy. At that time I had taken a year away from the game of professional netball to welcome Mark and my first child, Barney and was writing on my new role of motherhood. Fast forward two and a half years and I find myself with a now 3 and half year old, plus another beautiful little boy Franky, who has just turned 1. Our tribe is growing at a rapid rate and in January 2021 we will be welcoming our third little one to the family. We are extremely excited and could not be happier!

Coming from a small family, I have always loved the thought of having a house full of kids. It has been especially lovely to witness the evolving relationship between Barney and Franky as they become wonderful little mates and the thought of another one in the mix will no doubt add an additional element of personality and busyness!

Two years ago, Mark and I also decided to move to the outskirts of Brisbane for a tree change and more space. When our family life began, it was always a dream of mine to provide our children with some of the same opportunities that I had as a child living in the country such as fresh air and being surrounded by nature. We are exceptionally grateful, given the current way of the world, that we have had some space to occupy and let the boys run free.

The concepts of isolation, hand sanitising and social distancing have all become the new normal and while COVID-19 has provided us all with challenges, I think it has also had many positives. For our family, it has allowed us to reconnect and spend some more quality time with one another rather than keeping up with the rat race of being here and there. It has also prompted us to engage with the outdoors and get back to basics with our way of living.

When I reflect on some of the ways we have been occupying ourselves during this time, most of our activities have been outdoors. Many of our activities have allowed us to live a little more sustainably where we can. We have created our own vegetable patch, which has also been a great way to encourage a few more vegetables into Barney’s diet and we’ve welcomed some chooks into our family, giving us fresh free range eggs for breaky.

I must admit I have thoroughly enjoyed this period of time, reengaging with values and ways of life I experienced as a child and having a renewed sense of achievement from the little things.
