The Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols is one of the best known and most beloved celebrations of Christmas in the English-speaking world. Devised over a century ago by EW Benson, later Archbishop of Canterbury, it was quickly adopted for use in churches across Britain including, in 1918, at King’s College, Cambridge.
The BBC began broadcasting the annual service at King’s College in 1928 and from here the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols achieved worldwide fame. Today, millions listen to the service on Christmas Eve each year, and the liturgy and music are used in church settings of numerous Christian denominations across the world. As explained by King’s College: ‘In these and other ways the service has become public property.’
The format of the Festival service has remained constant since the early years of its celebration. The nine ‘Lessons’ are readings from the Bible. They begin with the book of Genesis and then trace the arc of God’s salvific plan through the messianic prophesies of ancient Israel, the Annunciation and the birth of Jesus, culminating in the mysterious and momentous words of the Prologue to John, with its themes of light, life and logos. In the words of Reverend Eric Milner-White: ‘The main theme is the development of the loving purposes of God [seen] through the windows and the words of the Bible’.
There are other traditions: the readers are ordered from junior to senior, the opening carol is always Once In Royal David’s City and the closing is Hark! The Herald Angels Sing. Within this framework, however, music is selected for each service from the widest range of anthems, hymns and carols. Across the world, these variations on the Christmas theme reflect the diverse cultures and communities which, each year, join together to celebrate the joy and hope of Christ’s coming into the world.

All stand for the Procession
Solo:
Once in royal David’s city Stood a lowly cattle shed, Where a Mother laid her baby In a manger for his bed: Mary was that Mother mild, Jesus Christ her little child.
Choir Only:
He came down to earth from heaven Who is God and Lord of all, And his shelter was a stable, And his cradle was a stall; With the poor, and mean, and lowly, Lived on earth our Saviour holy.
And through all his wondrous childhood He would honour and obey, Love, and watch the lowly maiden, In whose gentle arms he lay; Christian children all must be Mild, obedient, good as he.
All:
For he is our childhood’s pattern, Day by day like us he grew, He was little, weak and helpless, Tears and smiles like us he knew; And he feeleth for our sadness, And he shareth in our gladness. And our eyes at last shall see him, Through his own redeeming love, For that child so dear and gentle Is our Lord in heaven above; And he leads his children on To the place where he is gone.
Not in that poor lowly stable, With the oxen standing by, We shall see him; but in heaven, Set at God’s right hand on high; When like stars his children, crowned All in white shall wait around.

Bidding
Prayer
Reverend Andy Bleach
As we approach Christmas let us prepare to hear again the message of the angels: and in our minds travel to Bethlehem and imagine the baby Jesus lying in his Mother’s arms attended by the Three Wise Men.
We will read and follow through Bible readings the story of God’s purpose in bringing his Son in to the world for our Redemption, and in this Church we will remember Mary and the baby Jesus through prayers and carols:
But first, let us pray for the needs of the world; for peace and goodwill throughout all nations; for unity within the Church, within this School, community and City of Sydney: And let us at this time remember the poor and the helpless, the cold, the hungry and the oppressed; those who are sick in body and in mind and those who mourn; the lonely and the unloved; the aged and the little children; and those who do not know the loving kindness of God.
Lastly let us remember people throughout the world who rejoice with us, those who have hope in Jesus Christ. We offer our prayers and praises in the words which Christ himself taught us:
All respond:
Our Father, which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive those that trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; But deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, forever and ever, Amen.

Sages, leave your contemplations, Brighter visions beam afar; Seek the great Desire of nations; Ye have seen his natal star: (Refrain)
Saints before the altar bending, Watching long in hope and fear, Suddenly the Lord, descending, In his temple shall appear; (Refrain)
Though and Infant no we view Him, He shall fill His Father’s throne; Gather all the nations to Him; Every knee shall then bow down: (Refrain)

O LITTLE TOWN OF BETHLEHEM
English traditional melody
Words by Phillips Brooks
Arranged by Ralph Vaughan Williams
Verse 4 arranged by Thomas Armstrong
The congregation stands for the carol
O little town of Bethlehem, How still we see thee lie!
Above thy deep and dreamless sleep The silent stars go by. Yet in thy dark streets shineth The everlasting light; The hopes and fears of all the years Are met in thee tonight.
O morning stars, together
Proclaim the holy birth, And praises sing to God the King, And peace to all the earth; For Christ is born of Mary; And, gathered all above, While mortals sleep, the angels keep Their watch of wond’ring love
How silently, how silently
The wondrous gift is giv’n!
So God imparts to human hearts The blessings of his heav’n. No ear may hear his coming But in this world of sin, Where meek souls will receive him, still The dear Christ enters in.

God rest you merry gentlemen, Let nothing you dismay, Remember Christ our Saviour Was born on Christmas Day, To save poor souls from Satan’s power When we had gone astray

Now when they came to Bethlehem, Where our sweet Saviour lay, They found him in a manger, Where oxen feed on hay. The blessed Virgin kneeling down, Unto the Lord did pray.

With sudden joy and gladness, The shepherds were beguil’d, To see the Babe of Israel, Before his mother mild. O then with joy and cheerfulness, Rejoice each mother’s child.

Let us pray.
O God, who makest us glad with the yearly remembrance of the birth of thy only son, Jesus Christ:
