About GIRAF GIRAF, or the Giant Incandescent Resonating Animation Festival (est. 2005) is an annual festival dedicated to presenting the best in independent animation. Our parent organization, Quickdraw Animation Society, is a nonprofit animation production centre and registered charity. This year our theme for the festival is Animated City: featuring building-sized animated installations around Calgary! We are dedicated to gaining greater awareness of animation as an art form. Through 5 days of interactive activities, workshops, artist talks, visiting artists, and screenings, GIRAF showcases animations from around the world. We focus on presenting animations that push boundaries – exposing Calgarians to animation that is rarely seen in other festivals. We are proud to contribute to Calgary's vibrant arts community and to bring innovative and challenging animation to cartoon lovers.

GIRAF 2011: Animated City OUR NEW INITIATIVE: We intend to Animate the City of Calgary! Think Giant! In our 7th year, GIRAF debuts a new animated installation component to our festival. Animated City is a presentation of large-scale animation projections throughout the city, during GIRAF. Animated City strategically increases the public visibility and accessibility of animation. Animations will be displayed in high traffic locations, and possible venues include mall interiors, storefront businesses, and large projections on buildings in the city core. GIRAF features uniques animation workshops, screenings, visiting artists and gala events. We provide balanced programming, with programming for kids and families, but also animation that is adult, artistic, and critically acclaimed in nature. GIRAF is not just cartoons, but dedicated to exposing audiences to animation as an art form.
