WHAT IS IT? The School of Contemporary Art ÂŤFree WorkshopsÂť is one of the oldest educational centers, forming the future of Russian art. It is directed on the education of the new generation, setting waypoints, plunging into the context of the world art, imparting skills of thinking and feeling actual tendencies, giving an opportunity to study professional disciplines, to communicate with interesting representatives of the world of art, to learn from the well-known teachers.

MISSIONS The main mission of the School is to prepare professionals able to work proficiently in the contemporary art area, to give inexperienced artists and curators an opportunity to self-actualize in group and solo projects.

PERSPECTIVES As a part of the MMOMA, the School supports inexperienced artists, assisting them with participation in group exhibition projects (annual exhibitions of young art “Workshop”, since 2000), organization of the first solo exhibitions (the “Debut” program), development of artistic careers (the “Second Floor” program), acquisition of artworks in the MMOMA collection.

THE “DEBUT” PROGRAM Participants of the “Debut” program are not only students and graduates of the School, but also young artists, who have manifested themselves at large exhibitions, organized by the MMOMA. Over the years, dozens of young artists, whose names are among active partakers of the contemporary art scene, have appeared in the project

THE SCHOOL’S TARGET AUDIENCE The School’s graduates are professionals ready for independent movement in the world of art. We are happy when our students have a formed background, theoretical knowledge and practical skills. We welcome students and graduates of artistic, architectural, humanitarian universities (i.e. Moscow State University, Russian State University for the Humanities, Moscow Architectural Institute, Stroganov Moscow State University of Arts and Industry, Gerasimov Institute of Cinematography, Higher school of economics, etc.).

THE SPACE OF THE SCHOOL

The School has a large audience, designed for lectures, practical seminars, and master classes. The most interesting lessons are captured on video and the videos are uploaded to the web.

THE SCHOOL’S STRUCTURE The School of Contemporary Art “Free Workshops” is a department of the Moscow Museum of Modern Art. We offer 2 main training courses, i.e. “Contemporary Art” (for artists) and “Curator of Actual Art Projects”. In addition to the base courses we plan to provide special courses, seminars and open lectures (open to all comers). Special disciplines, as well as general lectures and seminars, discussion clubs and round-table meetings are provided for artists and curators. The aim of the lessons is to develop professional discussion skills, critical statement, to establish communication links and collaboration between artists and curators. We expect that our graduates will master the full range of skills, necessary for preparation of exhibition projects, and can work in future without institutional support or can find it by themselves.

One of the School’s founders. ANDREI VELIKANOV Artist, philosopher, art theorist. Winner of international media art contests. DARIA PYRKINA Candidate of Art History, curator, critic, teacher of History of Contemporary Art, head of the New Generation program in the National Centre for Contemporary Art, one of the initiators of two first Biennales for Young Art

NATALIA SMOLYANSKAYA PhD, associate professor of Russian School of Anthropology of the Russian State University for the Humanities, head of the program of the International College of Philosophy in Paris. TATIANA CHERNAYA Art historian, research associate of Exhibition Department of Moscow Museum of Modern Art. Interested in Egyptology and art of photography in contemporary art. KIRILL PREOBRAZHENSKY Russian artist. Mostly works with video. ADDITIONAL PROGRAMS: The School offers open programs: “First-Hand” and “PerformActivity”. As a part of the First-Hand program there were master classes by the AES+F art group, Olga Tobreluts, Vladimir Dubosarsky, Vladislav Efimov, Olga Shishko. In the PerformActivity program, the following artists took part, i.e. Flavia Ghisalberti (Switzerland), Valentin Jing (Russia), Patrick K.-H. (Russia), Oleg Makarov (Russia) and Asya Mukhina (Russia), John Giskes (Holland) and others.

CONDITIONS OF EDUCATION: To become a student of the School, you should submit your application with the attached motivation letter online in the website of Moscow Museum of Modern Art and pass an interview. Applications will be accepted until September 10. Interviews will be conducted after considering applications from September 16 to September 20. We welcome persons, who have higher or incomplete higher education in the humanities or art, creativity and original thinking, understanding of contemporary art and who wish to develop professional skills in this area. Despite the fact that lessons are held in Russian, knowledge of foreign languages is desired. Upon successful completion of the training course, graduates are awarded a certificate of the School’s own standard.

Cost of training is 35,000 rubles (hire-purchase is possible). Funded education places are available. The School’s admissions committee will decide on distribution of funded education places according to the interview results. The training start date is October 1; the end date is May 31.
