Autumnal Equinox Small acts of magic are everywhere if you look for them. For this collection we took inspiration from one of those moments, when the sun crosses the imagined celestial equator, and there is an even split of daylight and nighttime hours, heralding the beginning of fall, and calling on all of us to reconsider time and how we spend it. The autumnal equinox marks the start of shorter days, and longer nights, asking us to consider a world changed and always changing. Knitting is a small act of magic too. The pieces herein show what is possible with just one stitch, using purls, knits, cables, and slipped stitches to make textured garments and accessories that balance a modern sensibility with timeless style. From Owl to Crane, from Phoebe to Lark to Osprey, this collection is built around yarns that lend stitch definition, and yarns that, through their blend of fibers and spin, have their own textures and story. Each pattern pulls from that story, a perfect balance of yarn and design, like the balance of night and day on the equinox. Like most things, knitting builds from the smallest part to make the whole, a single stitch to a row to a garment. The ten pieces in Autumnal Equinox help to remind us of that careful growth. We hope you love each of these textured and cabled projects, and that the fall brings you more than a little magic.

Ainur Berkimbayeva Ainur is a recent immigrant in the US and a stay-at-home mom of two little ones. Knitwear design has become a creative outlet as well as a way to stay connected to the outside world. She knits every day whenever she gets a chance and designs knitting patterns at night after her sons go to sleep. Located in Upstate New York, Ainur draws inspiration from the beautiful scenery of the Adirondacks region. Her love for geometry and puns find a way to seep into her designs. Renate Kamm Renate Kamm has been a crafter all her life. Born and raised in Germany, she’s learned knitting, crocheting, and sewing in school, and hasn’t stopped creating since then. Her marriage brought her to California in the 80s. After 35 years of being involved in high tech and defense research and development projects, she retired in 2017. She now spends most of her time creating knitwear, gardening, and spoiling her dog Maxi. To her, crafting is a part of life and a puzzle to be solved. Hannah Maciejewska Hanna happily admits to being a yarn lover and knitting maniac. She lives in Poland with her husband and 11-year-old daughter, who sometimes draws things for her to knit up. Website: hadaknits.com Ravelry: Hada131 Instagram and Twitter: @hada131
Sierra Morningstar Sierra Morningstar lives in Michigan. She learned to knit as a teenager when she bought a book and a few balls of yarn from a big box craft store and taught herself some stitches. She then knitted scarves for a few years because she hadn’t taught herself any shaping. Though her appreciation of nice yarn has grown, as well as her knowledge of increases and decreases, the thing that first led her to pick up needles hasn’t changed: an innate desire to be completely wrapped in the warm and cozy magic of handknits.

Paula Pereira Paula believes that inspiration comes from nature, people and daily life, using yarn and needles as tools. She is particularly fond of mathematics and geometry, which enables her to design garments and accessories. She lives in Sao Paulo with her husband, 2 dogs and tons of beautiful fibers. Leila Raven Leila Raven began knitting on a whim in 2003, teaching herself how to knit using free resources on the internet. Her design inspiration comes from a deep love of the natural world, from botanical motifs and textures to the fibers and dyes themselves. She lives on stolen Wabanaki Confederacy land, currently known as Portland, Maine, USA. Instagram: @leila_raven Website: calloftheraven.com
Jocelyn Regina Jocelyn started knitting as a child, and honed her craft on hundreds of dishcloths. Her favourite things to knit nowadays are socks, sweaters and cardigans, and she loves a lace challenge! After many years of diligent pattern following, she started modifying to customize for herself, eventually leaving the pattern behind altogether to start from scratch. Though she has been designing personal projects for years, this is Jocelyn’s first published pattern. She lives in Toronto, ON, where she knits, teaches music, and performs with her band, Lunar Bloom. She is currently pregnant with her first child (arriving Jan 2021) and can’t wait to knit all of the baby things! Ravelry: jossposs Instagram: @jossknits
Melanie Rice

Melanie Rice is a full-time designer who enjoys knitting, crochet and needlework. She taught herself to knit when expecting her first baby. While raising children and working, knitting time was limited. Upon discovering Ravelry, her interest in fiber arts was renewed, and her current focus is on producing practical, adaptable, classic designs for knitting and crochet. She is inspired by simplicity and organization, and strives to write clear and concise patterns. Ravelry: melanierice Instagram: @melaniericehandworks
