greetings Introducing Kestrel, big sister to Sparrow, our fingering weight linen, and spun from the same organic fiber. We wanted to take that lovely fiber and create another yarn with it, one with a completely different personality (as all siblings insist on). We wanted a yarn you could work up quickly, but something that, like Sparrow, would show off the lovely characteristics of linen fiber, its easy drape, unmistakable soft sheen, and natural summeryness. Enter Kestrel, our new linen bird. Kestrel is a ribbon yarn, basically a knitted tube pressed flat, that’s spun in the same Italian mill that makes Sparrow. Kestrel knits up on needles from size 8 to 10 1/2. This first collection, right off the needles, is worked in stockinette stitch. The yarn pairs so nicely with simple shapes and stiches patterns. We spend a lot of time thinking up names for things, whether it’s a new yarn, new colors, or the next project. The pieces in this first collection are named after trails, ponds, and mountains in Baxter State Park, just north of Bangor, a place that springs to life when the snow melts. The colors, a palette of softly colored neutrals, punctuated by a straw yellow, marine blue, and warm rosehip red, come from favorite places in and around another Maine park, Acadia, at the tip of one of Maine’s many penisulas. See them on the opposite page from left to right: Yarrow, Senza (undyed), Porpoise, Sand, Urchin, Pebble, Cove, Ebb Tide, Rosehip.

Hamlin Peak Cardi Pam Allen

I'm not yet tired of swingy cardigans that drape and fall gracefully and don't require buttonholes or bands. This cardi is worked from the neck down entirely in stockinette stitch except for the small eyelet increases that follow the raglan and center-front shaping. The back hugs slightly, due to shallow darts; the fronts form triangles whose points dip down a bit. Finished measurements 30 (33, 36, 38¾, 41¾, 44½, 47½, 50½, 54¼, 57¼)" [76 (84, 91.5, 98.5, 106, 113, 120.5, 128.5, 138, 145.5) cm] at bust; shown in size 33" [84 cm] with 1" [2.5 cm] positive ease Yarn Kestrel by Quince & Co (100% organic linen; 76yd [70m]/50g) • 9 (9, 10, 11, 11, 13, 13, 13, 14, 15) skeins Pebble 504 Needles • One 32" circular needle (circ) in size US 8 [5 mm] • One set double-pointed needles (dpns) in size US 8 [5 mm] Notions • Stitch markers (m) • Stitch holders or waste yarn • Tapestry needle Gauge 16½ sts and 22 rows = 4" [10 cm] in stockinette stitch, after blocking.

Togue Pond Tank Pam Allen

Togue Pond, named after a small body of water nestled in the mountains of northeast Maine, is a simple top with a curved hem that dips slightly in back. Its embellishments are few: A strong line of decreases to shape the armhole and clean ribbed borders at hem, neck, and armhole. Finished measurements 33 (36, 39, 42, 45, 48, 51, 54)” [84 (91.5, 99, 106.5, 114.5, 122, 129.5, 137) cm] circumference; shown in size 33” [84 cm] with 1” [2.5 cm] negative ease Yarn Kestrel by Quince & Co (100% organic linen; 76yd [70m]/50g) • 6 (6, 7, 7, 8, 8, 9, 10) skeins Cove 503 Needles • One 24” circular needle (circ) in size US 7 [4.5 mm] • One 32” circ in size US 8 [5 mm] • One 32” circ in size US 10 [6 mm] • One set of 5 double-pointed needles (dpns) in size US 8 [5 mm] Or size to obtain gauge Note: For armhole and neckbands, I used longer circ and the magic loop method to avoid dpns. Notions • Stitch markers (m) • Removable stitch markers • Stitch holders or waste yarn • Tapestry needle Gauge 16 sts and 21 rnds = 4” [10 cm] in stockinette stitch worked in the rnd using largest needles, after blocking.

Hudson Cowl Alicia Plummer

Where pond meets shore there’s a mixing of elements. Gentle, effortless, flowing, water courses over sand and pebbles. In Hudson, a mix of stitches mimics the changing shoreline in pure, organic linen. Finished measurements 39” [99 cm] in circumference and 11” [28 cm] deep Yarn Kestrel by Quince & Co (100% organic linen; 76yd [70m]/50g) • 3 skeins Senza 500 (A) • 2 skeins Porpoise 502 (B) Needles • One 20” or longer circular needle (circ) in size US 10 [6 mm] • One 20” or longer circular needle in size US 10½ [6.5 mm] Or size to obtain gauge Notions • Tapestry needle Gauge 16 sts and 20 rows = 4” [10 cm] in stockinette stitch, after blocking.

Daicey Pullover Melissa LaBarre

This loosely-knit, simple pullover is the perfect piece to transition from a day at the beach, to an evening of cool, coastal breezes. Knit with raw edges and a looser gauge, this piece highlights the drape-y linen it’s worked in. Finished measurements 31½ (34¾, 37¼, 39½, 41¾, 45¼, 48½, 52)” [80 (88.5, 94.5, 100.5, 106, 115, 123, 132) cm]; shown in size 34¾” [88.5 cm] with ¾” [2 cm] positive ease Yarn Kestrel by Quince & Co (100% organic linen; 76yd [70m]/50g) • 8 (8, 9, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13) skeins Yarrow 507 Needles • One 16” circular needle (circ) in size US 10½ [6.5 mm] • One 29” circ in size US 10½ [6.5 mm] • One set of double-pointed needles (dpns) in size US 10½ [6.5 mm] Notions • Stitch marker (m) • Tapestry needle • One ¾” button Gauge 14 sts and 16 rnds = 4” [10 cm] in stockinette stitch worked in the rnd, after blocking.

Pam Allen Stockinette stitch pairs so beautifully with Kestrel that you don’t really need to do much else with it. Edges don’t roll and the drape is to die for. The David tee is wider than most with very fitted sleeves to balance its boxy shape. For detail, an exposed shoulder seam. That’s it. Finished measurements 41½ (44¾, 48, 51¼, 54½, 57½, 60¾)» [105.5 (113.5, 122, 130, 138.5, 146, 154.5) cm] bust circumference; shown in size 44¾» [113.5 cm] with approx 11» [28 cm] positive ease Yarn Kestrel by Quince & Co (100% organic linen; 76yd [70m]/50g) • 8 (8, 9, 10, 10, 11, 12) skeins Urchin 505 Needles • One 32” circular needle (circ) in size US 10 [6 mm] • One set of double-pointed needles (dpns) in size US 10 [6 mm] Or size to obtain gauge Notions • Stitch markers (m) • Stitch holders or waste yarn • Tapestry needle Gauge 15 sts and 23 rnds = 4” [10 cm] in stockinette stitch in the round, after blocking.
