ear after year, we turn our focus to shawls: Wraps that keep our shoulders warm, that complete a fa-

vorite outfit , that make us feel dressed-up or comforted, and that give us the real satisfaction of having made a beautiful, wearable thing with our own two hands. In this, our eighth (!) year of pulling together a stellar array of pieces to share with our fellow knitters, the humble, foundational, meditative garter stitch looms large. Each of these wraps—whether knit sideways (Hanna Maciejewska’s Pleasant Road and Paulina Popiolek’s Chalice), top down (Paulina’s Bard and Hanna’s Jocelyn), or bottom up (Dawn Catanzaro’s Waxwing)—garter stitch is the canvas onto which travell ing lattice, eyelet diamonds, etched floral and leaf motifs, and twisted stitches are thoughtfully and cleverly placed. Squishy garter stitch means comfort in making, and our little fibers—soft Cleaner Cotton™ Whimbrel and Willet , silky Tern, rustic Owl, and wispy Chickadee Organic Heathers—look so happy in this simple stitch. We hope these new shawls are an inspiration for summer knitting, as they are for us, every year.

dawn catanzaro A sometime indie designer, Dawn makes her home at the very edge of beautiful Portland, Maine. By day she works as pattern developer for Quince & Co, and by night she knits into the wee hours, getting pestered by her irksome cats. ravelry: DCatanzaro

paulina popiolek Paulina Popiolek’s passion for knitting stems from a very young age. Since the very first attempts she would experiment with different stitches and shapes. This interest slowly evolved into designing. Although trained in nutritional science, her fascination with design eventually found an outlet when Ravelry came into existence. She lives in Surrey, United Kingdom with her very patient husband and two cats. ravelry: PaulinaP
