wrap up. Curating an annual collection of scarves (etc) is always a fun and interesting exercise. How can we possibly pare down when there are so many wonderful ways to bundle wool around the neck? The options are limitless. An accessory can be the perfect "breathing" project—something that fits in between larger, loftier knitting goals that require more time and concentration than one finds at their disposal, that can be picked up here and there as precious little bits of time allow, and that can be completed relatively quickly. Scarves, unlike garments, can be worn day in and day out, as often throughout the week as needed—so frequently reached for, these useful adornments, happily donned. This year we brought the focus back to the simple scarf: Sine, Shinbashi, and Daphnis all representing the simplest (and simply stunning) long, classic scarf, each one a portrait of versatility that a simple long rectangular canvas provides. Sine, with its pretty wave pattern, Shinbashi with subtle color and texture, and the substantial cables and proportions of Daphnis all give the knitter plenty of options. Sometimes warmth needs to go bigger. Crossing, Ágata, and Palmatum are all breathtaking wraps and shawls that fit the bill. Cowls—continuous loops of warmth—are beautifully represented, too, with Biddeford, Cooperi, and Lake Superior. And, of course, it wouldn't be Quince without a traditionally shaped, sweet little shawl, Gathering, to bring it all together. We chose our favorite wooly yarns to place in the hands of this year's crop of talented designers, and they each made something truly special that we hope you'll enjoy having on your needles and around your necks. Cast on, and keep warm. With love,

Denise DeGidio As a fiber artist, knitting is rather new to Denise's resumé. She has studied various areas of the medium for many years and recently began teaching at the University of Wisconsin–Superior as a Fibers instructor. Denise appreciates using traditional craft and techniques to stay connected to how these methods and materials have been used over time by various cultures, which is ever more rare in the modern world. Incorporating the elements of art and principles of design help her inspirations come to life, and living in Northern Wisconsin—in close proximity to Lake Superior, her favorite inspiration—she finds that the nature surrounding her in daily life inspires her work.

Carolyn Kern Carolyn grew up a maker in a family of crafters and needlework artists. She has a real need to "make things" each and every day. After her children left the nest, Carolyn began teaching knitting classes and writing patterns for her students. Knitwear design has gradually become her form of artistic expression utilizing the technical skills and attention to detail picked up from her career in engineering. Carolyn lives with her husband in northeastern Pennsylvania, where she periodically takes breaks from her daily knitting to blog about it.

Paula Pereira Paula believes that inspiration comes from nature, people, and daily life, using yarn and needles as tools. She is particularly fond of mathematics and geometry, which enables her to design garments and accessories. She lives in Sao Paulo, Brazil, with her husband, 2 dogs, and tons of beautiful fibers.

Jenny Sauselein Jenny's knitting journey began in 2009, when her sister casually showed her how to knit stockinette stitch while sitting in a hospital waiting room. As soon as those first few wobbly rows began transforming into fabric, she was completely smitten. Quickly immersing herself into this big, wonderful knitting community, she hasn't looked back. By day, Jenny is a marketing and brand director living in Delaware, but by night, she's plotting her move to a sleepy little coastal town in Maine, where she hopes to join the fiber community professionally—and sit by the ocean and knit.

Stefanie Sichler Stefanie creates from a place of being inspired by her surroundings, whether through knitting, embroidery or painting. Knitting (as well as any other creative endeavor) is not just about the finished product; each project is filled with lessons and successes along the way. Stefanie's hope is that her versatile garment designs pose a bit of a knitting challenge while still providing a meditative, relaxing journey.
