ERICA BONILLA

Erica was born on June 19, 2000 in East LA but soon moved to Las Vegas at the age of three with her older four siblings. She is the proud daughter of a housekeeper and a cook. Her humble upbringing inspired her to be heavily involved in her community as well as within her school. She is the Vice President of Hispanic Student Union (HSU) which focuses on serving the community and promoting activism. Although this does occupy most of her time, she has not lost focus on her ultimate goal to give back to the community through education. She persistently believes that with education, anything is possible, as it is the key to success. She firmly believes that the root to education begins at home. Although the obstacles she faced in her life have been very present, she has maintained her giving spirit, not only to her family but to all those around her as well. Erica would like to thank Quinceañera magazine, from the bottom of her heart, for this amazing learning experience! To be a first generation Latina women is both an honor and a responsibility and she plans to fulfill this blessing by demonstrating to the nation the beauty of charity and gratitude.

“Here’s a list of days for you to think twice about”

Prepare yourself:

Now that you have a general idea of what your vision is, what you would like and who you would like to work with, it’s time to prepare yourself mentally. As mentioned earlier that the planning of your quince was going to be an emotional roller coaster with ups and downs, yet still an adventure. It will get to a point where that’s all that anyone is talking about and all that you’re thinking about. Throughout this pages there will be tips on how to stay stress free. However, being stressed out, overwhelmed and tired are not reasons throw tantrums or be disrespectful to anyone. Celebrating this new chapter in your life comes with the privilege of having a party but also with the expectation that you carry yourself in a lady-like way. All eyes are on you, and you never know whose watching, who’s looking up to you or how much work behind the scenes is taking place to make this day extra special. Be kind. Be prepared.

The date you choose should be a day that all of your guests can attend or make arrangements in advance if they’re planning on traveling from out of state or country. Don’t get so caught up in the planning that you accidently schedule it on a National Holiday or other event. You want to be considerate of other people’s beliefs and special days.

Padrinos

As I’m sure you’ve noticed planning a Quinceañera can get pricey. There are so many things to take into account: from the reception hall, to the dress, to the muñeca and jewelry. The best thing about the Hispanic culture and tradition is that whenever someone decides to have a big event like this or a wedding is that we can count on our family to contribute. In other words, your Padrinos. They contribute money or sponsorship that they don’t expect for it to be paid back. It’s a mutual understanding that in the future if they ever plan an event for themselves or their children, they can come to you and your family for help as well. Photography by: De La Vega Studio / Salem, Oregon

The budget is a financial plan to

stay with in the price range that your parents can afford. The initial budget number is a starting point for your parents to begin making financial arrangements. nt want to Will be things you'll wa party details in indulge in, and other t back on. which you'll need to cu

Two of the best ways to stay stress free and Before you get ahead of yourself by looking up places for your reception, dresses and photographers, you and your parents should really sit down and talk about a planned budget. A budget is a planned amount of money that can be spent on your party. It could be that your parents have been saving for this day since you were 10 years old, or they just recently decided to start putting money aside. Remember that all Quinceañeras come in different sizes and budgets.

What are “Padrinos”? Padrinos are Godparents, not just the ones who baptize you but also the ones who present you with sponsorship, gifts and blessings on your special day. Remember in the beginning when we talked about building a team for your event? Padrinos are a big part of this team. A padrino or madrina can volunteer or be assigned a particular item(s). They can contribute with money towards the total for that category or the full amount.

Here are three things to consider before you make a list of possible candidates for padrinos: • Do you and your family have a close relationship with them? • Are they reliable and you can count on them • Are they able to contribute financially?

Approaching Padrinos Communication is probably the most

important part when requesting help from a madrina or padrino. You want to be clear about what you would like and what you are requesting from them. You and your parents can set up a meeting .

Dont’ be shy. They are expecting you • Fewer guests means more funds to use towards decorations and party gifts • Make your party "By Invitation Only" • DIY (Do It Yourself): if you're creative consider making your own decorations instead of having them made. • Padrinos can share the cost • Some (not all) prices can be negotiated

to ask. Padrinos play a major role in a Quinceañera. Not only are they contributing financially to your party, but they are also sacrificing their personal time to join your celebration. When talking to friends and family members about possibly being a padrino, consider starting off with something like this:

1.- Begin the conversation by

acknowledging and thanking them for the role they’ve played in your life. Example: “I want to thank you for being like a second father/mother to me and always supporting me”.

2.- Then, let them know that you’ll be having a quinceañera and would like their personal blessing. Example: “As you know, I turn 15 years old next year and we’ve decided to celebrate with a Quinceañera! And, of course, we couldn’t celebrate this without you.”

3.- Finalize by asking for their contribution. Example:

“Because you are such an important part in my life, I was wondering if I could count on you to be my padrino of _________________.”

The Quinceañera dress is perhaps one of the most important traditions, very distinguishable and somehow everything ties back to the dress, the center of it all. The silhouette is standard ball gown princess style, but the necklines and sleeves are up to whatever you feel comfortable with. Traditionally the quince dress was white, to stand for purity, as the years progressed, there were colored pastel designs added to it and now it has progressed in to any and every color under the sun! It can have bling, embellishments, glitter, lace or even multiple colors and prints. Although there are many trends and prints that come and go, it’s important to remember that you don’t want to look back in 15 years and say what was I thinking?! Sometimes less is more and it’s all about the fit of the dress that makes it extra beautiful no matter how simple it is.

DO’S, DONT’S, AND WHY’S on selecting the perfect dress according to your body shape. DO

WHERE TO BUY YOUR QUINCE DRESS There are stores that specialize in Quinceañera dresses and others that have a combination of wedding, Quinceañera and special event gowns. Here are the most popular places where you just might find your perfect dress.

LOCAL BOUTIQUE:

Most dress stores have many gowns in stock for you to try. They also have catalogs of dresses from where you can order. Many boutiques have in-store seamstresses that can tailor-make a gown specifically to your liking. If this is something you choose to do, you be involved in the entire dressmaking process, from selecting the fabric to the style and embellishments. The advantage of getting your dress made at a local boutique is that it’s convenient for you to communicate with the designer directly. WE HIGHLY ENCOURAGE YOU TO BUY YOUR DRESS AT A LOCAL BOUTIQUE .

OTHER ALTERNATIVES: SEAMSTRESS: Many skilled seamstresses create quince gowns from the comfort of their own home. Since they don’t have to worry about the overhead costs of running a shop, their prices are typically lower than if you were buying a dress elsewhere. DESIGNER: If you want a popular designer to create a custom gown for you, you need to research their prices. You should know that this type of quince dress is the most expensive and that it might take longer to receive once ordered—depending on the popularity of the designer. RENT A DRESS: There’s absolutely nothing wrong with borrowing a dress from a friend or family member. If they happen to have a dress that you absolutely love and that happens to fit you, or if you really don’t want to make a fuss over your dress, then perhaps this is the best option for you.

DRESS TALK:

The most common terms used to describe a Quinceañera gown. CORSET: the top piece of the dress used to create a smooth silhouette. APLICATIONS: patches of intricate details that can be sewn into your dress . BOLERO: a cropped, cardigan-like garment with short or long sleeves. SWEETHEART NECKLINE: a neckline that is shaped like the top of a stylized heart. HALTER TOP: a strap extended from

the bodice of a sleeveless dress that is then fastened or held behind at the neck, leaving the shoulders and back bare. STRAPLESS DRESS: a dress that stays put around the upper body without shoulder straps.

CHIFFON: a fabric made from cotton, silk or synthetic fiber. ORGANZA: a thin, sheer fabric traditionally made from silk. SHANTUNG: fabric made of silk. TAFETA: considered a high-end fabric, suitable for used in ball gowns such as Quinceañera dresses. TULLE: a thin and transparent fabric most

ONLINE:

Shopping online is a relatively new way of finding a quince dress. When you browse a trusted site you have access to view every color and style by various designers, which are way more dresses that you can see at a local boutique. You can even view and order dresses from another country. You should have your measurements professionally taken before you purchase a dress online. This will eliminate the guessing work into filling out your dress size.

Mass-Market Chains: Much like shopping online where you have a huge selection of dresses to view, mass-market chains also have large inventories of dresses. Every season they host sales events to make room for new inventory, which means big savings for you. online is having to guess your size, wait for it to be shipped and risk the idea of not liking it.

Vision

Our future young Latina is equipped to identify her educational dream, develop a goal and making that goal a reality thru higher education, while achieving lifelong success.

Mission

We strive to empower Latinas through education, professional and personal advancement. By engaging them at an early age providing professional and leadership development they will see and value education attainment as a way to achieve their dreams and strongly impact their future, their family and their community.

Purpose

After working with Latinas for the past decade Quinceañeras Magazine has identified the need to help these young girls whom are lost when pursuing an education. In most cases these girls are from a lower social status and first or second-generation Latinas daughters of uneducated parents, whom are not able to provide the educational guidance or personal preparation. Quinceañeras Magazine has been providing some learning opportunities in the form of print editorial, events and workshops by providing healthy body images (etiquette) building strong communication skills (using 5 elements of communication) and developing positive relationships (anti bullying campaigns) to groups of Latinas. Through Quinceañera Foundation our goal is to extend our educational efforts by preparing these young girls focusing on creating personal, educational, and professional guidance but also by removing financial barriers that might prevent the opportunity for the student from securing an education and gaining employment. We believe that with the proper guidance many of these very intelligent young Latinas will have the bright future they deserve to have.

VISIT. VISIT.VISIT.

If choosing an outfit is an impossible task some days, can you imagine the stress of choosing the right college? In today’s society, higher education is no longer just a pathway towards a bright future, rather, a necessity. One of the toughest decisions one makes as a teenager is deciding what college or university to attend. Quite frankly, being a teenager is already a difficult job by itself. To help relieve some pressure, check out the following suggestions.

Apart from doing research and making lists of your dream colleges, one of the most essential steps in this process is visiting different campuses. Take tours, shadow current students, and don’t be afraid to ask questions.

KNOW YOUR BUDGET. This is major. Almost every school offers financial aid. Just because a school has a huge price tag doesn’t always mean it’s out of reach. Explore financial options like scholarships, grants, loans, and even college work-study.

SET YOUR PRIORITIES. Know what you want to get out of your experience. When making your decision, take into account academic rank, degrees offered, study abroad programs, clubs and athletics, location, and even Greek life!

FEEL THE VIBE.

Make sure you choose somewhere you feel comfortable, which is another reason to visit. You want to feel “at home” in a place where you will spend four years of your life.

COMPROMISE.

Having pros and cons lists for your top choices can make your decision a little easier. This will help you cross off any schools that don’t make the cut and narrow it down. Sometimes the most expensive or highest ranked school is not for you. Just remember to start the application process ahead of time so that you are not limited on options. Apply to every school on your list even if you feel you might get rejected. The best advice for choosing a college is to never underrate yourself or limit your potential. Always shoot for the moon!

PENSANDO EN DEJAR LA ESCUELA?

No lo hagas ! BY QUINCEANERA FOUNDATION

Te lo van a decir en la escuela, en tu casa, los amigos, el gobierno, la television, esta revista, tu novio, en la iglesia… Pero al final del dia esta decision es solo tuya. No te rindas!

7. Te ayuda a crecer de manera integral. Todo lo que deja de crecer,

empieza a morir.

LA CORTE DE HONOR: Traditionally, the corte de honor is made up of 14 members: seven males and seven females. As the leader, you represent the 15th member of the group. Your chambelan de honor is the 16th member. However, not all Quinceañeras decide to go this traditional route. Some may decide to ditch the traditional sevencouples trend for a smaller group. Others may feel that an all females group is more for them, while others may want to have a corte de honor made up of only boys. The choice is completely up to you. But as with every decision, remember that there are pros and cons to everything. For example, you may decide that you

love the visual appeal that having a traditional, 14-member court will give your party—not to mention the fun and creative baile sorpresa you can choreograph with such a large group. If that’s the case, be aware that getting that many people organized is more difficult than dealing with a smaller group. Not only that, but including such a large group also requires that you incorporate each of them and possibly their families into your overall reception budget. Don’t worry. Before you stress over how to determine the right corte de honor for you, turn the page for a list of main things to consider.

Your Options:

our t will c r e b m e “14-mour party” give y

Chambelanes Only, Damas Only or both? PRO you will definitely stand out in a group surrounded by boys. They’ll be no doubt you’ll be the center of attention and that your waltz will look stunning.

CON they’ll be no girls around to help you choose your Quinceañera dress, you won’t go dama dress shopping with your friends and you might feel like the odd-person out on the limo ride surrounded by just boys. If you pick all damas: PRO going dress shopping and having tons of girl time with your friends will keep you calm and having fun as you plan your Quince.

Both:

PRO you can have the best of both worlds: the easygoing vibes of your guy friends and the sisterhood of your damas. Plus, your baile sorpresa will be tons of fun and hanging out hanging out with a combined group of friends will be healthy for everyone. CON having a combined group can be distracting for everyone involved. The girls and boys might be crushing over each other causing them to lose focus in the rehearsals. Some of them might even argue over with whom they were paired.

CON drama tends to takeover in a group of all girls, especially if they don’t get along. Although they may be all your friends, that doesn’t necessarily mean that they’re friends with each other. ual / Las Vegas

The HighSchool Journey: 5 Keys to Student Success In the schools today, many students are not reaching their full potential by underachieving or dropping out. This phenomena in not necessary if we connect with them early and be their guide to a bright future.

#1 Goals

Of all the keys to high school success, by far the most important is establishing goals. Kids today need to know the purpose of their learning and know that their efforts are helping them accomplish high school goals that they chose. These goals can be short term like striving for certain grades or becoming involved on campus in clubs or athletics. I t can be simply committing to do more studying. Most important, however, should be the long term goals. These goals can start out as having a general idea as to what one wants to do in their future or considering what schools the student would like to attend be it community college, trade school or university once school has ended. These goals should be written out freshman year and should be monitored periodically by students, faculty and parents.

#2 Organization

A student must have a system of organization. That can be a Google calendar and simply a school provided agenda or organizer. Too many times, students receive agendas but do not put them to maximum use. Homework, projects, and assignments must be recorded for students to stay on top of upcoming assignments. This will serve to alleviate the scourge of most students which is procrastination. Student should maintain notes on all lecture materials to study for their quizzes and exams. Too often, students often put loose important assignments into backpacks or unorganized binders. It’s critical that students have spaces specifically for each subject with assignments easy to find.

#3 Involvement

It’s important to be involved at school as much as possible. It’s not possible for all students because some are working, but, if not, school involvement is a student’s initiation into networking. When involved, students feel a greater part of their school’s environment and become invested which allows them to feel a sense of pride in themselves and in their school. Students can get involved in school clubs, athletics or work in the offices on campus. They can attend dance or other on campus events. Students can make new friends when they get involved and many of these friendships can last a life time.

#4 Parent Participation

Students, unless self-motivated, in many cases, will only care as much as their parents care about their school and school work. Ideally, it would be great for parents to get involved at school, too but simply checking in with their son/ daughter and asking them how their day was, checking grades on-line, and conversing with those teachers in classes where grades have slipped lower than a certain level can be beneficial to a student. Yes, teachers do invest more in students where parents are present supporting their child in some way.

Monitoring and Awareness

Schools and parents need to monitor and evaluate the goals of the students. Students need to self-monitor themselves. Are the goals the students set realistic? In terms of their grades, what post high school options will be the most reachable? At the beginning of junior year, student need to know what they need to do to achieve the goals they originally set and to reach new goals that have been adjusted or created. As graduation get closer, monitoring will allow them to continue to have a post- secondary direction instead of finishing high school with the question: So what am I going to do now?

High schools need to do their part, too High school need to be aware of the goals and dreams of their students and provide the mechanisms to help students reach those destinations. High school need to interview all incoming freshman in small groups on a day specifically set aside for those interviews. When interviewed, teachers need to ask freshman about their individual talents, make recommendations for involvement opportunities in campus groups and activities and ask freshman what are their /goals plans for the future. Their needs to be a check in junior year where counselors visit junior classrooms and further inform students about college opportunities and the resources that are available to find scholarships at Universities all over the country. Finally, senior interviews should happen at the end of the year just prior to graduation to see how far students have come, were they well-served, did they achieve their goals and what are their future plans. Student can share what the strengths of the school are and what could be done better.
