f this were a more ordinary time, I would spend the bulk of this letter thanking the wonderful Quincy University community for a successful inauguration ceremony and all

the support I have received during my first year as president. Truly, this warm and caring community has exceeded all my expectation and hopes. I love every day on this campus and the time spent with students and alumni who have been and continue to be nurtured by this place. Across the generations, our Franciscan mission is the bright, guiding light that has sustained this place and this people. But this is no ordinary time. A global pandemic, unlike any we have known for over a century, has forced us to teach and learn in new ways and to make one difficult decision after another. This pandemic came even as state and national politics seems to infuse every choice and at a time when distrust in science and experts is commonplace. Nevertheless, QU endures, and QU rises. Hawks everywhere have responded to the pandemic by adapting, by innovating, by learning new things, and by working together. Whatever else has happened locally and nationally, the members of this community have identified one problem at a time, solved each problem, and moved forward to identify and solve the next problem. This edition of QUniverse describes the value of hard work in overcoming adversity. Here, we celebrate the intrepid story of Quincy University, now in its 160th year, as a place where each decade has presented new challenges to overcome, from the Civil War to COVID-19. We learn as well the story of one alumnus, whose many successes took him to today’s Quincy University Board of Trustees and gave him a lifetime of

There are always surprises on social media. Thanks to a Twitter post by his daughter, Emily, about matching ties and facemasks, this July 2020 photo of President McGee received over 19,000 likes on Twitter. Various tweets described President McGee as “adorable,” “dapper” and “dripping.”

leadership, Hawks, and support of the people who continue to lift up the university in word, in deed, and in prayer. Our future success at QU will not be the result of luck or accident. Instead, we will succeed by design, where our success is the product of planning, of hard work and of the deep commitment to doing good and being good. Finally, I want to thank those alumni and other friends who, when seeing that the pandemic would make the lives of many QU students much more difficult, responded by donating generously to our COVID-19 relief fund. As a fellow donor to the relief fund, I am grateful for this support of our students and community in a time of great need, in addition to appreciating all our donors who made the last year our most successful fundraising year in the history of Quincy University. For a short video tour of how we modified the QU campus and classrooms to adapt to the challenges of the COVID-19 virus, see quincy.edu/coronavirus. May God bless each of you in this difficult time, and may God watch over this great university.

GOD, FAMILY, AND EDUCATION. THEIR FAMILY MOTTO “GOD. FAMILY. (AND MOST IMPORTANTLY) EDUCATION ABOVE ANYTHING ELSE,” SERVED AS A CONSTANT MOTIVATION TO BOTH WOMEN. 2

QUniverse | Fall 2020

Francisco and Irma Quiñónez had many dreams and aspirations for their children, and education was always a top priority, and going to college to receive an undergraduate degree was no exception. In fact, not going to college was never a possibility. When their daughters, Bianayla ’20 and Julissa ’20, began looking at four-year colleges, it was truly a family affair. A college education means different things to different people. To first-generation students, Bianayla and Julissa, having a college education meant getting a good job, having a successful future, good income, and a better life for her and her family. For both, the ultimate goal was to make their parents proud. Bianayla remembers, “for the longest time, getting a college education wasn’t for me, but it was for them.”

FOR THE LONGEST TIME, GETTING A COLLEGE EDUCATION WASN’T FOR ME, BUT IT WAS FOR THEM. —Bianayla Quiñónez

by Pilar Yates Brumbaugh

Bianayla and Julissa narrowed down the things that were important to them like small class sizes, small student to teacher ratio, community, and access to various resources to help students succeed; and they found it at QU. Their parent's opinion was equally important. So knowing that their parents felt at peace, confident in the decision, and felt that the campus and community were safe helped to solidify their choice to attend QU. While going to the same college was never part of the plan for the Quiñónez sisters, they wouldn’t have it any other way. While being a part of a small, liberal arts school provides students with a sense of community; it was special being able to go through the triumphs, struggles,

successes, accomplishments, and even the defeats together. While Bianayla had two years of community college experience under her belt, both women had a period of adjustment as they acclimated to campus life. Besides common adjustments, they went through a bit of culture shock. Coming from Rochelle, Ill., where there is more of a Hispanic presence in the community, and raised in a traditional Mexican household, they both had to make some lifestyle adjustments. With change came a sense of adventure and excitement. They immersed themselves in the campus community by getting involved in various extracurricular

activities and community service projects Both women took advantage of the opportunity to try new things and step into leadership roles. The sisters had several things that motivated them while they finished their degrees. Knowing what their parents sacrificed and that they truly believed in them, kept them going. Francisco and Irma were the sisters' biggest cheerleaders. They constantly called to check-in, share words of encouragement, and prayed for each of them and their futures. Their family motto, “God. Family. (And most importantly) Education above anything else” served as a constant motivation to both girls. www.quincy.edu

So while they wanted to make their parents proud, they had ambitions they wanted to achieve for themselves and their future. “I pushed through when life got tough, and I didn’t give up.

Julissa noticed she grew in work ethic, values, morals, and being tested in different ways. “I now understand that having a college education is far more than classroom education you receive,” said Julissa. “Whether it is the experiences you encounter, people you meet with different perspectives, you are changing as a person and growing. College was far more than taking classes and learning material.” Now that finals are completed, and Bianayla and Julissa have graduated from Quincy University, having accomplished their dreams, and earning their degree means so much more to them than either of them could have ever imagined.

Student Spotlight | QU Bianayla has graduated with her Bachelor's of Science in Nursing with a minor in Spanish. Through QU's partnership with Blessing-Rieman College of Nursing & Health Sciences, she was able to experience various departments at the hospital. Following her longtime dream of becoming a neonatal nurse, she has recently accepted a job at a level three NICU in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and plans to continue working towards becoming a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner. She is looking forward to the opportunity to follow in the footsteps of the nurses who helped her mother and her when she was an infant in the NICU.

IT’S A GREAT DAY TO BE A HAWK! BIANAYLA QUIÑÓNEZ ’20

JULISSA QUIÑÓNEZ ’20

Julissa plans to continue her education at Southern Illinois University School of Dental Medicine as she pursues her dreams of joining or even opening a dental practice. She is looking forward to having the opportunity to live out the Franciscan values that she has learned to live by during her time at QU by focusing on providing public healthcare for the underserved in her community. After looking back on the impact that so many people made on her life that helped her get to where she is today, she wants to be able to help the people around her and make a difference in their lives.

Graduation is a bittersweet moment as the university sends off members of the QU community to begin their new adventures. The university is blessed to have watched these individuals learn new things, challenge themselves to be better, grow in their faith, and inspire those around them. There are goodbyes, good luck wishes, and cheers as they take flight in what is sure to be an exciting journey. For Bianayla and Julissa, and their classmates of the Class of 2020, Quincy University wishes them all the best.

FAITH AND PERSERVERANCE: HOW QU ENDURED FOR 160 YEARS by Fr. Joe Zimmerman

THE DIFFICULT WE DO

IMMEDIATELY. THE IMPOSSIBLE TAKES A LITTLE LONGER.

In its long history, Quincy University has fought to inspire, educate, and influence generations of students amid economic decline, wars, disease, and civil unrest. As the university celebrities its 160th year, it faces another crisis that will require it to persevere with the courage and tenacity that has brought it this far.

Quincy College has had its crises from its earliest days. Fr. Anselm Mueller, president for almost forty years, had to fight in the 1860s for a separate building for the school so that it could welcome boarding students. The result was the east section of what is today, Francis Hall. In the 1930s, the Great Depression caused the school to cancel periodical subscriptions and cut back on heating fuel. The college consisted of a two-year college curriculum and a high school program referred to as “The Academy. In 1939 Franciscan Province authorities in St. Louis ordered the faculty to discontinue the college and focus on the high school. The faculty defied the authorities, closed the high school, and kept the college. Then came the Second World War. Enrollment was down to 50 students, almost all women. What saved the day at that time was a program for training naval reserve military. The tuition from this program helped tide the school over 6

1912

1917

1930s

until the post-war burst of enrollment caused by returning veterans with their government tuition grants put the school on a more sure footing. The 1960s saw two forces combine to explode enrollment. The “baby boomers,” children born to returning World War II veterans, reached college age, and the Vietnam War permitted young men to avoid the draft as long as they were in college.

1940s

Although American campuses expanded in the late 1950s and 1960s, enrollment began 1950s to decline in the mid to late 1970s. Enrollment decline combined with the energy crisis, inflation, and increased costs threatened the existence of many 4-year liberal arts colleges across the U.S. Quincy College prevailed, launching its first master's program 1960s and reinstating the Football Program in the early 1980s and becoming a university in the 1990s. As each decade brought new challenges, the university responded with ingenuity and hard work, striving to add academic programs that were relevant to the ever-changing job market and athletic programs to attract and retain students. Donors responded through 1970s generous giving and provided funds for student spaces such as the Connie Niemann Center for Music, Quincy Media Inc. Broadcast Studio, and the Student Success Center. In addition to outside challenges, Quincy University’s Franciscan origins caused two long-term problems in its history. One was its failure to cultivate alumni support. Until the 1960s, the friars were the majority of the faculty and staff and received no pay; after 1970, they earned 50 percent of what their academic or staff positions warranted. Cultivating alumni seemed unnecessary, and even contrary to the Franciscan spirit. The saying was, “The Franciscans are our endowment.” Everyone assumed that the arrangement would never change. The assumption was wrong.

1980s

1990s

The second difficulty was the problem of leadership. Back in the 1960s, a Harvard sociologist named David Riesman pointed out that the biggest threat to the future of 2000s Black and religious colleges would be difficulty in recruiting effective leaders. Friars were appointed to lead Quincy College without administrative preparation. As a result, decisions were reactive, made in response to immediate problems, and often left deeper 2010s issues unresolved. For 160 years, Quincy University has overcome external and internal challenges. Time has proven people are committed to Quincy University, and when people are committed to a project, they find resources to support it. Now the university faces a new crisis -Covid-19. The Franciscans hope that the pandemic will open the way for a greater expression of Franciscan and religious values.

Classes begin in building at 8th and Maine. Interestingly, the school would not have a permanent residence for eleven years. Classes begin in the new building, now the eastern wing of St. Francis. Bishop Peter Joseph Baltes dedicated the building on September 12, 1871. The QU Chapel is completed and dedicated College name changed from St. Francis Solanus College to Quincy College and Seminary. College survives the Great Depression and the college welcomes its first female students World War II greatly reduces enrollment; the college survives by training naval cadets and army reservists. College achieves first accreditation by the North Central Association. Enrollment reaches an all-time high and the college expands by adding Brenner Library, McHugh Theatre, several residence halls, and the Soccer Program. Despite facing the energy crisis, the decline in enrollment, and increased costs the college developed the faculty senate, established a full-time chaplain on campus, and built a new soccer field at North Campus. College adds MBA, acquires North Campus and QU Stadium, and joins the NCAA, Division I, and II. College renamed Quincy University The university hires the first lay president in its history and builds the Health & Fitness Center. The university adds the Connie Niemann Center for Music, a new Student Living Center, Quincy Media Inc. Broadcast Studio, Student Success Center, and renovates QU Stadium www.quincy.edu

PURSUING TRUTH, BEAUTY AND THE GOOD QUINCY UNIVERSITY INAUGURATES

ITS 24TH PRESIDENT, DR. BRIAN MCGEE by Jen Wingerter ’13

IN BECOMING QU’S 24TH PRESIDENT, I HAVE TAKEN ON THE DUTY TO PROTECT AND BUILD ON THE HERITAGE OF THIS UNIVERSITY, BEGINNING WITH THE FRANCISCAN FRIARS WHO STARTED A COLLEGE ON THE ILLINOIS FRONTIER, 160 YEARS AGO. Quincy University ushered in a new era of transformation and leadership with the inauguration of Brian McGee, PhD as its president on Friday, February 28, 2020. With a commitment to pursue truth, beauty, and good, McGee accepted responsibility as the 24th president of Quincy University before an enthusiastic crowd including, religious leaders, city officials, community leaders, staff, faculty, and students. Formerly, provost of the College of Charleston, McGee brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the role of president. He has served as chief-of-staff and senior vice president of executive administration and as a tenured professor and chair of communication.

A week of festivities led up to the inauguration day, including a community service event, academic showcase, special lecture with Darrin Hicks, PhD, professor of communication studies, University of Denver, sporting events, and a band concert featuring QU’s Symphonic Band. During the ceremony, introductory remarks were made by Darrin Hicks, before the investiture of the president. Del Mitchell, chair of the Board of Trustees and President Emeritus Phil Conover ’19, DHL (hc), bestowed the presidential regalia and medallion on McGee. Ken Oliver, PhD, professor of school and community counseling, was convener for the ceremony. Fr. John Doctor ’72, OFM, vice president for mission and ministry, delivered the invocation, and Bishop Fernand Cheri III, OFM, provided the benediction.

TRUTH, BEAUTY, AND THE GOOD AND CHALLENGE OUR STUDENTS TO MAKE HARD CHOICES BECAUSE DOING SO IS RIGHT, AND IT IS NO LESS RIGHT THAT WE DO SO WHEN THE WORK IS DIFFICULT AND DAUNTING.

Just two weeks after celebrating the inauguration, the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a pandemic, and the United States declared a national emergency concerning the outbreak. As the world shut down, McGee led the university with seamless communication. He equipped staff and faculty with the knowledge they needed to make appropriate decisions as the university moved all coursework online. He sent daily communication to the campus community, making sure everyone had the most up-to-date information as the university navigated the crisis. As the university faces an uncertain future in the wake of the coronavirus, McGee has proven the institution is in good hands.

>REFLECT The COVID-19 pandemic has changed many people’s lives, as all pandemics do. However, most individuals will focus on the negatives instead of seeing the positives a pandemic can cause. Social media does its job by highlighting some of the unpleasant issues, like the heated battle between liberals and conservatives on what to do next with the economy or how the class of 2020 indeed got robbed of any final hooray. Comparable to most college students, I had no idea the coronavirus jokes I saw on my twitter feed in January would inevitably keep me from leaving my own home, and threaten my summer.

KHALEM CALDWELL,

a sophomore from Chicago Ill., shares how he spent time reflecting during the stay-at-home order and learned something new.

Having to convert in-person classes to online was mental agony in itself, and I have a list of classmates, as well as teachers, who would vouch. However, with all the negativity and complaints circling my head, as thoughts can be vultures, the pandemic was the mental break I needed.

AT FIRST, I WASTED MY TIME PLAYING VIDEO GAMES, DEVOURING HOME-COOKED MEALS, AND TALKING WITH MY FRIENDS, WHICH IN RETURN DISTURBED MY SLEEP SCHEDULE. THEN, OUT OF NOWHERE, I REALIZED A PANDEMIC IS TAKING PLACE, AND I KNOW NOTHING. My professors would probably debate me on that last statement, yet, there is some truth to that. I’m 19 and turning 20 in November. I don’t know how to file my taxes, real estate might as well be fake, and it turns out the stock market isn’t a place where you buy groceries. I honestly couldn’t tell you where this epiphany came from, but it probably had something to do with me watching one of my favorite T.V. shows, Ballers. That, and my developing man crush on Elon Musk. Upon my epiphany, I quickly opened my laptop and began researching the stock market. I landed into what is known as the “YouTube loophole”, and found myself watching a video on the hot new Netflix series, Tiger King. I called it quits after watching that video, but that night I discovered a new passion for personal finance. The pandemic led me to something I had no idea about, or wouldn’t even attempt to gain an understanding until I was neck-deep in student loan debt. The concept of savings, inflation, and having a credit card, were afterthoughts until now. I mean, this experience led me into opening up a Roth IRA account. Something most people don’t think about my age, although they need to because compound interest is very sweet. Now, personal finance doesn’t have to be your “calling”, yet I challenge everyone to be productive and discover something new. We are battling a formidable opponent in COVID-19, but surrendering is not an option. It is the perfect time to start building that business you always wanted or to take steps to achieve your desired physique. What I’m trying to get at is, there’s light in every dark situation. We must look for it. “When something is important enough, you do it even if the odds are not in your favor.” -Elon Musk www.quincy.edu

QU | Main Feature It was a quick turn of events for me. I found out on March 19 that Australia would cease regular travel at the end of the month. I had to decide if I was going to stay alone in the U.S. indefinitely, or travel home and earlier than expected. My parents booked me a flight on March 20, I left on the 24th and arrived in Australia on the 26th. Once I arrived home, I went into quarantine. For two weeks I didn’t leave my bedroom, except to sit outside in the sun or go to the bathroom. My parents left meals at my door, and I wore a mask whenever I left my room. After not seeing my family for months, it was a weird situation to come back to. Thankfully, Australia put strict lockdown laws in place early, and the regulations have made a big difference. Everything is slowly starting to open back up again, and hopefully, I will be able to visit some friends and family soon. Completing the semester online at home had a few challenges, from unstable WIFI to midnight classes. One of the hardest things was not getting the same level of teaching and access to facilities as I would be in the classroom.

MOST OF MY PROFESSORS WERE REALLY HELPFUL AND TRIED TO BE FLEXIBLE AND ACCOMMODATE STUDENTS IN ANY WAY THEY COULD. Most of my courses continued to meet at least once a week for a video conference lecture, Q&A type session. The only problem with this was that because of time differences, I was up anywhere between 12 and 4 a.m. a few nights a week to get online and attend these meetings. One professor recorded the meetings so I could watch them later, but it was easier to learn and ask questions if I was at the meeting. One other problem was I did not have the hardware or software to be able to best complete some of my work. Being a multimedia journalism major, I am often producing and editing content. With limited resources at home, it was quite difficult to be able to create what I needed to. The isolation has been difficult and very lonely at times, especially being away from my team and friends and not knowing when I’ll get to fly back. In my spare time, I usually message friends and help out around the house. Most of my friends are in the U.S., so there are a few hours in the morning we can chat before it’s late at night there. There are no jobs, so I have just been trying to learn new skills and make things. I am trying to learn a language, master riding a unicycle, making some jewelry, playing music, and will hopefully get into some house renovating soon. I think the pandemic has made me more thoughtful about what is important and has encouraged me to think of different ways I can help others.

CHLOE NOTT,

a senior from Tamworth, Australia, shares how she had to reorient when she returned home during the stay-athome order.

At one time, online classes were a great outlet. It was convenient to have a class fit within my busy schedule when time didn’t allow for a standard class. But unfortunately, they became the new norm this spring, creating a different outlook on learning. The classes during the last semester of my senior year carried over to online effortlessly, the teachers accepted the new norm and understood the circumstances challenging their students. Personally, there wasn’t much to hinder my learning, but I empathize with students who may not have taken the change lightly. Having a good relationship with my professors became vitally important to my success, they helped me stay on top of my work and would reach out and ask me how things were going. The relationships I had with my teachers were important academically, but the other students who stayed at QU with me helped keep my sanity. Unfortunately, the amount of contact I had with people face-to-face was limited to lunch and dinner, and sometimes afterward, we would hang out in each other's rooms. Staying in my SLC suite sparked something I wasn’t able to do actively in years - creatively think. As time slowed down, my creative thought that had slowly disappeared, began to reappear. Something so vital that helped me be different had gotten lost in the weeds of constant activities.

I HAD STOPPED TAKING TIME TO THINK ABOUT CHARACTERS, SKITS, OR IDEAS, SOMETHING I PRIDED MYSELF ON BEFORE ARRIVING AT QU. SO DURING THIS TIME, I PICKED UP MY OLD HOBBY OF WRITING DOWN EVERY CREATIVE IDEA I HAVE INTO A JOURNAL.

ADAM MEYER, a recent graduate from Laguna Niguel, Calif., shares how he spent his extra time during the stay-at-home order rekindling his creativity, which led him to a new plan after graduation.

This rekindled exercise helped me understand where I needed to head after graduating. Because of the uncertainty of what my life would look like after school due to the pandemic, the idea of graduating filled me with anxiety rather than feeling accomplished. My original plan was to find an acting agency, earn a master's degree, and play more volleyball in California. But with the pandemic, everything closed, and no responses came to me for volleyball, so getting a masters was off the list. My ideas kept building up, but I didn’t know exactly what to do with them. It wasn't until I overcame my fear that I realized I could use social media as a medium to produce my creations and see where it could go. But for now, I wait until Hollywood opens up so I can begin putting my foot in the door. In short, during quarantine, I dove into my creative thoughts- an activity I hadn't done in ages, and as a result, saw my future. The arrival of the pandemic destroyed my plans, but I know God lets things happen for a reason. Although many cannot see light at the end of this tunnel, we must continue to fight and pray for healing and tranquility. www.quincy.edu

by Dylan Shick ’19

A TIME OF UNPARALELLED CHANGES:

The question continually asked is, ‘How will we get through this?’ For the Quincy University Athletic Department, the answer is simple; continue to do what we’ve always done in tough situations, step up, and serve.

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the athletic department launched the Hawks Helping Hawk Fans initiative to support the Quincy community. QU Athletics joined in several activities to give back to the community that continually supports Hawk athletic programs and student-athletes. Members of the athletic department staff volunteered with United Way and Quincy Catholic Charities, helping to unload

shipments of food and supplies that were then distributed to those in our region in need and couldn't leave their homes during the stay-at-home mandate. Multiple staff members also donated blood through the Red Cross. QU Athletics will continue to offer assistance to our community moving forward. Marty Bell, vice president of intercollegiate athletics says,

“Hawks Helping Hawk Fans is a way for the Athletic Department staff to reach out to the community that loyally supports our programs and student-athletes. In these challenging times, our community needs our support. Servant-leadership and community engagement are principles of QU and the NCAA, and demonstrated by the willingness of our staff. I'm extremely proud to be associated with such a fine group of mentors and leaders.” www.quincy.edu

TREMENDOUS STRIDES:

Quincy University tennis has taken tremendous strides over the last few years in all facets of the program. The improvements to the QU tennis facilities, coupled with the increasing success on the court, has put the program in a position to compete at the highest level in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.

The roster size has grown from 14 to 25 in just two years. With the program's growth came upgrades to the tennis facility on campus, a great benefit to student-athletes. The tennis house now features lockers for each athlete, a television where athletes can watch videos of matches, a new laundry room, and a lounge space for team bonding. Additionally, the university built a brand-new hitting wall on the practice courts. These various upgrades would not have come to fruition without help from several people. One of the most important, however, is former head coach, Mark Schuering.

Schuering stepped into the leadership role after serving as State Trial Court Judge for 24 years for the Eighth Judicial Court of Illinois. He was also an adjunct lecturer at QU for 27 years.

A former Hawk who competed as a student-athlete under Frank Longo for QU, Schuering has had strong ties to the university for the past 45 years. When the call came in 2017 to lead the program, he was all in. “Marty Bell asked me to be on the search committee for a new QU head coach,” said Schuering.

“There were no workable candidates at the time, so I needed to answer the call and coach. Quincy University had rescued me back in 1971, and the Franciscans, athletic coaches, and faculty have profoundly influenced me for the rest of my life.” Quincy University athletics embodies the term servantleadership, and Schuering experienced that firsthand.

The Mart Heinen Club and individual donors also stepped forward and made timely and substantial donations so we could construct the hitting wall and rehab the QU tennis facility. The future is here, and it's bright for QU tennis. Ethan Arns, a four-year tennis alumnus, was announced as the new head coach for the Men’s and Women’s Tennis Programs this spring.

“Coach Arns appreciates the lifelong impact student-athletes gain through a well-run athletic program, especially when coupled with QU’s excellent education and internship experiences,” said Schuering. “He brings his tennis passion, organization, and a great work ethic to the program, and it is immensely exciting to see him take over. There is no doubt in my mind that he will continue the growth and success of QU tennis.” Arns comes to QU with a wealth of coaching experience from his stints at the Quincy Racquet Club and Quincy Notre Dame High School over the past six years. During his time at the Quincy Racquet Club, Arns provided tennis instruction to all ages, including large groups. Arns also served as the head coach for women’s tennis at Quincy Notre Dame High School during the 2016-17 season. His team finished the regular season as sectional champions with a 10-1 record, and five players qualified for the state tournament.

“This is a dream come true. I was born and raised in Quincy, and it’s been a unique place to live - unique like its tennis community. This is why I believe I am the best fit to run the QU tennis program,” said Arns. “I’ve been involved in the tennis community playing, working, and volunteering for some time now. I have watched the current QU tennis team grow over the last few years, and I see great talent with incredible potential. Stability and consistency are what I will bring to these players, along with a hard work ethic. With that combination, QU tennis will continue to find success. I am truly blessed to have this opportunity to coach for Quincy University. I look forward to the start of a great year this fall.” During this time of uncertainty, there is one thing that is certain. Mark Schuering helped build QU tennis to where it is today, and when a sense of normalcy returns, the program will be in great hands with Ethan Arns at the helm. www.quincy.edu

YEARS CARING by Jen Wingerter ’13

When you sit down to talk to JERRY MURPHY '70, M.S., the conversation quickly moves to the good work others are doing. He wants you to know their stories. He can’t help but celebrate their success, especially in the face of challenges like the COVID-19 pandemic. His enthusiasm and care for others have kept him connected to his alma mater for over 50 years. Murphy ventured onto campus in 1966, a young freshman. Soccer led him to Quincy College (now QU), but he chose it for other reasons as well. Growing up in St. Louis, Murphy had many college choices without leaving his hometown. But with the encouragement of his high school mentor, Murphy looked for a college away from home. Going away to college provided the opportunity to mature in a good and safe environment. And he is so grateful he chose QU. Murphy met his wife Mary Jo, and many lifelong friends during his four years on campus. In 2016, this group of friends returned to campus for Homecoming and to celebrate 50 years of friendship that started with their freshman year at Quincy College.

The one thing that firmly bonds him to QU is the Franciscan values he adopted and wove throughout his life.

For the past ten years, Jerry Murphy has served alongside many of his 1970 era QU classmates to organize the QU & You Chicago Golf Outing fundraiser. www.quincy.edu

QU | Alumni Feature Murphy's bond with QU goes beyond the things he learned in the classroom, and the relationships formed while he was on campus. The one thing that firmly bonds him to QU is the Franciscan values he adopted and wove throughout his life. Murphy applied these values to his 40-year career in the private sector of higher education, serving in nearly all phases of school operations, including, dean of students, campus president, regional vice president, vice president operations, and vice president student

“The Franciscan values taught and lived at this institution are my foundation,” says Jerry Murphy ’70. “Let us begin again,” a quote of St. Francis of Assisi is one of Murphy’s favorites and pertinent to the times. As the country recovers and adjusts to the impact of COVID-19, he believes now more than ever the critical thinking skills and Franciscan values learned from QU will make alumni stand out.

affairs and alumni relations. His career included extensive work in national and regional accreditation, including serving as a commissioner and vice-chair of the ACCSC national commission. After he retired, he worked as a consultant with engagements that include work in the Middle East and South Africa, a capstone to a long and successful career. Murphy is a current trustee and past board chair at QU. He brings the Franciscan values and his vast experience in higher education with him to every board meeting. As the board guides the university through the challenges of COVID-19, he is confident the university is on good footing. "The university’s leadership, our excellent students, and the dedicated faculty created a very safe environment for everyone, this summer,” said Murphy. “Building on the summer experience, the university has an excellent plan for this fall that has the full support of the Board of Trustees and the Quincy community.” Murphy has led by example, giving back to the university community as a committed donor, alumnus, and trustee. He has served as the QU Fund Co-Chair, as an organizer of the QU and You Golf Tournament, as well as faithfully attending and hosting alumni events. “I’ve learned to be in the moment, to take as much as you can from what's happening around you, and make it a part of your education,” said Murphy. “As we begin again, as a nation and a university, we need to remember the incredible acts of service made for each other. May we learn from that, apply it to the future by giving back to those who helped and paying forward to those in need.” Respecting all life is a cornerstone for Jerry and has shaped how Mary Jo and he raised their four children, maintained friendships, served his Alma Mater, and managed his career. It is why he sits on the Board of Trustees. It is what generates the excitement he feels as he watches the graduating class walk across the stage. He knows the good work the university is doing and that the Franciscan values that he experienced on campus fifty years ago are alive and well today. www.quincy.edu

John lives out these values daily, and these are the values that are intertwined in his messaging to the QU community in times of need. Fr. John continues to encourage us, especially in these past few months, to lean on our Franciscan value of solidarity, to focus on the good with a spirit of gratitude, that we are not alone, and that with God, we have enough.

“He said to them ‘Go into the whole world and proclaim the gospel to every creature,” (Mark 16:15 [NAB]). In times of doubt, uncertainty, and angst, Fr. John brought hope, comfort, serenity, and even humor, through his words, lessons, and reflections.

For 160 years, the Franciscan values of diversity, servantleadership, service, the pursuit of knowledge, justice and peace, inclusiveness, and accountability have guided the university in times of trouble and triumph and will continue to guide us in the future.

THE BOOK in heraldry symbolizes a university, but as a Franciscan university, it also represents the three key books from which we read and learn.

THE BOOK OF THE SCRIPTURES reveals to us

who God is, who we are as God’s sons and daughters, and how we are called to love one another as God loves us.

THE BOOK OF CREATION discloses that

all that exists comes from the same Source and is a special reflection of God’s goodness and beauty in the world. As campuses closed across the nation and teaching moved to an online format, Quincy University maintained the message, “we are open, and we are here for you.” THROUGH POSITIVE COMMUNICATION, THE UNIVERSITY LEADERSHIP INSPIRED FACULTY AND STAFF TO MAINTAIN THE GOOD WORK OF THE UNIVERSITY.

C

oaches helped their international students obtain emergency flights home. Faculty members pivoted and became technology experts. The IT Department spent countless hours lending support and making sure that wherever students, faculty, and staff were working, the campus community was connected. Staff designated as essential, worked tirelessly to clean facilities, cook meals, and offer support to the students whose only option was to remain on campus. For students at home, the university mailed supplies and books to them. “We are a learning community, and this pandemic forced us to learn a new way to approach communicating and connecting,” said Susan Grant, MS, education technology specialist.

24

QUniverse | Fall 2020

With advances in technology over the last decade, many activities transitioned effortlessly to an online format. QU uses Moodle, a Learning Management System (LMS), that allows instructors to post files, videos, forums, quizzes, and links. Faculty also used teleconferencing tools, like Zoom, Google Meet, Cisco Webex, and GoToMeeting. IT Services used TeamViewer to remote into the computers of faculty, staff, or students who needed IT help. The university’s Virtual Private Network (VPN) allowed students, faculty, and staff access to on-campus resources, like the library. “QU has been working to put many of our services online,” said Grant. “Our Portal allows students to fill out forms, sign up for classes, look through and pay their bill, see their grades, and get an unofficial transcript any time, day or night.”

Academic Feature | QU

Not everything shifted online easily. Science labs, student teaching, and some art classes found the task more daunting. There was also the issue of access. “For all the effort that the instructors put into moving their course online, the one hurdle that was not in their power to solve was student access to good wifi, software, and hardware,” said Grant. “You can have the best online lessons, but if the students cannot get to them or post to them, then there is nothing to be done.”

We are a learning community, and this pandemic forced us to learn a new way to approach communicating and connecting. SUSAN GRANT, MS, EDUCATION TECHNOLOGY SPECIALIST

Besides not having sufficient technology, students struggled with their environment as well. Home lives were different, as entire families were working and learning remotely. For some students, the care of younger siblings fell on them so their parents could work. But most of all, students struggled to be away from a learning environment, where they could bounce ideas off of other students, and get support in areas they were struggling with. Faculty worked hard to try and fill in the gaps, but it was a challenge as they had a great deal to learn in a short time. Despite the challenges the university faced moving coursework online, the added skills to the faculty’s educational toolbox could change how the university supports each student. Faculty can engage students in different ways using visual and online interaction. For example, student-athletes who are out of the classroom from time to time could, instead of missing a lecture, watch it online. It could also open the door for more non-traditional students to complete their education while working at the same time. “I am excited to see what is around the corner for the campus community,” said Grant. “We were called to stretch out of our comfort zone, and we did it with great success.”

Fifteen undergraduate students, with the support of seven mentors, shared their original research within their academic programs. Students presented their research using videos that were uploaded to the Quincy University website.

What was the most challenging thing for you as classes went entirely online?

How did you reimagine learning and adapt your courses?

What stood out to you about the nature of face to face learning in contrast to online learning and teaching?

Anna Shajirat, PhD,

ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF ENGLISH The most challenging aspect of moving online was supporting students as they made a difficult transition in extremely challenging conditions. The majority of students had significant anxiety about the transition and I felt very clear that my duty was to support, encourage, and comfort them. I was very glad to be a source of support for students, but that extra output of work and energy was draining.

Bill Machold, MM,

1

ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF MUSIC, DIRECTOR OF BANDS I treated each course differently. Each course has different needs, different methods of delivery, and each course lends itself differently to the options for online delivery. For individual music lessons I used a combination of meeting through Zoom or Google Meet and having students submit recordings of themselves for evaluation. Some academic courses “met more often through online formats and others were more geared toward academic work and goals posted in Moodle. I tried to be realistic in my expectations as to not overburden students while still having expectations of learning and progress.

What went really well this semester? What created excitement?

6

What will you do moving forward that you didn’t do before?

How did you balance synchronous and asynchronous connections and collaboration?

Eylsia Mahoney, MS,

ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF SPORT MANAGEMENT We met via Google Meet once per week during our class time. It was important to check in with them, go over lectures, and answer questions. Other communication was through email, phone call, and text. I spent significantly more time working with students individually the last 8 weeks of the semester.

5

Minerva Cruz, PhD,

ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF HEALTH CARE ADMINISTRATION I will include more videos of myself to online courses and I will contact all my students individually at the very beginning of the semester to be sure they do not have any personal situations impeding them from completing the tasks and meeting deadlines in class. Although I have done something similar to this in all my courses and before the pandemic, I plan to include it as a regular task in all my courses at the very beginning of the semester. I think it is important for students to understand that professors understand their struggles as students. Before we became professors, we were students like they are now, and we had similar struggles. We just need to show our students those values that define who we are as professors.

Surprisingly, both in class and in virtual meetings, college students get very excited about Kahoots! In my Advanced Topics in A&P class, which is discussion-based, we continued as normal but in a virtual format. Students solved and presented whiteboard case studies (we call them this because in the classroom I write symptoms, tests, other information on a whiteboard-virtually I typed it out as a word document) The students in this class were excited every time we met, and we always had interesting and productive discussions. www.quincy.edu

INSIDE THE

METRICS by Barbara Schleppenbach, PhD ’71

“We prepare him to enter as an educated apprentice in any position in life.” -Fr. Anselm

In retrospect, 1860 might not have been an auspicious year for new ventures. The German friars who ventured to Quincy to establish a college were confronted by a late frost, a spring drought, and a summer that was the hottest within memory. According to Quincy University historian, Fr. Francis Jerome Gray, OFM, the weather was just one of the challenges to “bestowing the blessings of classical education on the reluctant youth of western America.” AT LEAST 80% OF COLLEGES FOUNDED BEFORE 1861 HAD CEASED TO EXIST BY 1932, FR. GRAY NOTES IN HIS HISTORY OF QU. But in 1862, the friars made two fateful and intertwined decisions: They would press on with their project, and they would include adding business courses to their ambitious curriculum. Within five years, the business program was a well known and popular course of study, and sources consider 1867 to be the birthday of business at QU. From the beginning, QU president, Fr. Anselm Mueller, OFM, distinguished QU’s degree program from “the so-called Business College.” A graduate of QU’s program has mastered the liberal arts as well as professional studies. “Above all that, he has learned to think and act intelligently and preserve a disposition to improve his knowledge by future studies,” Fr. Anselm wrote in his memoir. “We prepare him to enter as an educated apprentice in any position in life.”

28

QUniverse | Fall 2020

By 1904, Fr. Anslem observed that “the great majority of graduates are businessmen.” Then, as now, they benefited from an education that prepared them for versatility and flexibility in a rapidly changing professional environment. The founders would have proudly viewed the current curriculum as a continuation of their vision. According to the 2020 Academic Catalog, “the School of Business emphasizes education through critical thinking and decision-making skills, experiential learning, leadership development, and exposure to diverse academic theories and practical experiences.” For many years, the artful blending of liberal arts and general preparation in business subjects prepared students for successful careers. Administration, chaired by Georgetown University graduate Mr. Frank Naggi, laid the groundwork for specialization that would culminate in majors in accounting (1970), management (1975), and marketing (1977) and recognition as the Division of Business and Accounting (1976). Throughout the 1970s, chair Fr. Melvin Grunloh, OFM, developed a plan for the school’s first graduate degree, the MBA (1984). Trained at the University of Chicago, Fr. Melvin was highly influential as a faculty member, chair, and member of the Board of Trustees. His dream of success for QU’s MBA program was nurtured by many but perhaps most memorably by Dr. Richard Magliari, who served as a faculty member and chair for 40 years of singular growth, (1971 – 2011). Today’s MBA offers the signature blend of curricular rigor and preparation for an everchanging workplace. According to the School of Business dean Dr. Cynthia Haliemun, Ph.D., “MBA courses are offered on campus as well as online every 10 weeks including summer. QU offers four concentrations: General MBA, Organizational Leadership, Operations Management, and the newly added Health Care Administration (2019).” Thanks to a $2.25 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education Title III program, QU is preparing to offer the first courses in a Business Analytics major. As in the 1860s, QU is responding to evolving challenges and preparing graduates to do the same. The skillful blending of the liberal arts and current technology is once again positioning QU and its alumni for enduring success.

Dana Walker: GIVING BACK... Q: Please tell our readers about your career experiences before you entered academia. A: I started my career as a cost accounting manager with

a bachelor’s degree in accounting. After obtaining additional technical education and my master’s degree, I moved into the information technology field. My initial focus was on the heavy manufacturing industry. I joined the IBM Corporation in 1989 as a professional hire focusing on both software development and implementation in the manufacturing industry. During the majority of my career at IBM, I worked for the Software Division, assisting customers in several industries in strategic management of technology and implementation.

Q: What motivated you to teach? A: IBM provided me an excellent career opportunity by

encouraging me to pursue my doctoral degree while working there. I was very fortunate to succeed in the IT industry due to excellent mentors and teachers. I knew I wanted to “give back” to society by teaching. Webster University asked me to teach as an adjunct professor in 2001 due to my professional experience and academic background. I found that I enjoyed teaching graduate students, and more importantly, I received feedback from my students that they enjoyed the classes. When I retired from IBM in 2014, I knew I wanted to continue to teach full time. I enjoy it when students grasp a concept or idea and put that knowledge to work in their career.

Q: Please explain business analytics to a non-specialist. What does it involve? In what ways is it useful to business? A: Through technology, over the past ten years, the ability to capture events and data has grown astronomically. The synergy of combining significantly lower cost to store the data and the growth of sophisticated easy-to-use tools, we are enhancing the ability to analyze and model complex systems and events. These advances allow us to move the application of business analytics from technology orientated scientists to domain experts such as accountants, healthcare specialists, supply-chain managers, and marketing specialists.

Business analysts often specialize in a particular industry, such as telecommunications or energy. Or, they may work in a specific area of business, like marketing, human resources, or supply chain management. Others – especially those working for smaller firms – may serve as general practitioners. In all settings, the job of these professionals is to define a problem, collect and analyze data pertaining to it, evaluate company processes and procedures, and ultimately recommend and deploy strategies designed to solve the issue. We are seeing great strides using prescriptive analytics in healthcare with disease control, pharmaceutical research, and patient treatment. We are also seeing great strides in logistics and supply-chain optimization and dynamic operations management.

QUniverse | Fall 2020

by Barbara Schleppenbach, PhD ’71

Q: What is the job outlook for grads with this degree? A: According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS)*,

employment of management analysts – including business analysts – is expected to grow 14% from 2018 to 2028, which is much faster than the average for all occupations. BLS reports for May 2019* showed that the median income for all management analysts, including business analysts, was $85,260 in May 2019. The middle 50% earned between $79,720 and $91,160. Salaries for the lowest 10% were around $49,700, while the highest 10% brought in upwards of $154,310. *Bureau of Labor Statistics, U.S. Department of Labor, Occupational Outlook Handbook, Management Analysts, on the Internet at https:// www.bls.gov/ooh/business-and-financial/management-analysts.htm (visited May 15, 2020).

Q: What can you tell us about the features of the new program at QU, such as the courses and the software for the new lab? A: The Quincy University program, starting in the fall of 2021,

will focus on “applied” business analytics, developing the skills to frame the problem appropriately, select the appropriate tools, while maintaining an ethical and Franciscan approach to the solution and use of the data. We will have several advanced tools to explore and use during the program, including Excel, Tableau, Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) from IBM, SPSS Modeler, and several more. Tools and techniques that graduating students can demonstrate proficiency in the tools being used in industry today. Another major objective of the program will be to enhance the skills of domain experts (such as auditors in accounting, market researchers in marketing, and operations managers in manufacturing and services) to utilize the available tools and data to solve real-world problems they face both tactically and strategically.

Q: Please share anything you think our readers would like to know. A: Students that received their bachelor’s degree within

the last five years will have the ability to return to QU and receive a second bachelor’s degree in business analytics after completing the major course requirements. During the salary research, we found professionals with bachelor’s degrees in finance, accounting, marketing or management, AND a second bachelor’s degree in business analytics typically earned 10% to 15% more than professionals with their bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree.

Faculty Focus | QU

Business Analytics HOW IT WORKS... Descriptive Analytics A preliminary stage of data processing that creates a summary of historical data to yield useful information and possibly prepare the data for further analysis.

Diagnostic Analytics A deeper look at data to attempt to understand the causes of events and behaviors.

Predictive Analytics The branch of advanced analytics which is used to make predictions about unknown future events. Predictive analytics uses many techniques from data mining, statistics, modeling, machine learning, and artificial intelligence to analyze current data to make predictions about the future.

Prescriptive Analytics Prescriptive analytics is the area of business analytics (BA) dedicated to finding the best course of action for a given situation. Prescriptive analytics is related to both descriptive and predictive analytics.

It argues that Solidarity’s dual commitment to truth and legality were irreconcilable and that the Communist state cultivated this conflict, contributing to the undermining of Solidarity's leadership and the treatment of history as an arena for the politicization and state control. It posits that these conflicts have contributed to contemporary political divisions in Poland. The article was published in Contemporary European History, Cambridge University Press, summer of 2020. Mejer also achieved Signature Member Status for having been juried into at least four National RMNW exhibitions. Mejer was reelected as an officer to the National Watercolor Honor Society (WHS) Board for his 11th term. He previously served on the board for two terms as treasurer/ membership and as president. He continues to serve as chair of the Watercolor NOW! Traveling Membership exhibition.

ARTIST STATEMENT FOR TAKE PC #17 I am a Geometric Abstract Intimist that operates out of a collage-space tradition. My watercolors emanate from small 6” x 4” paper collages. I express various emotional situations using a layering process in order to create visual drama-via opposites, that equates to the pulse of life! I agree with Kandinsky that the circle is the most peaceful shape and that it represents the human soul. In my work, I hope TO PRESENT (inside to out) rather than REPRESENT (outside to in).

Br. Herbert (Herb) Rempe, O.F.M. Br. Herbert (Herb) Rempe, OFM, a Franciscan friar of the Sacred Heart Province, died on April 14, 2020, at St. Mary’s Home at the Felician Village in Manitowoc, Wis. at the age of 84. He was born on September 18, 1935, in Lawrence, Neb., to Norbert Rempe and Beatrice (Pohlmeier) Rempe, and was given the name James. He was received into the Franciscan community as a novice on June 21, 1957, and given the name Herbert. He professed solemn vows on June 22, 1961. With two friar uncles, Br. Art Rempe, OFM, and Br. Ray Pohlmeier, OFM, and several friar cousins, John and Gilbert Ostdiek, OFM, it is no surprise that he would decide to pursue a religious vocation. He began his service working for seven years on the construction crew, building St. Paschal’s Brothers School in Oak Brook, Ill.

Br. Herb helped in all facets of the work but brought special expertise as an electrician. He went on to serve for eleven years on the staff at Our Lady of the Angels Seminary (OLA) in Quincy, Ill., working in maintenance and as the dean of students, and then, after three years working for Quincy College, Br. Herb returned to OLA as the treasurer and the vice-rector.

From Quincy, he moved to the provincial offices in St. Louis, Mo., where he served as the province treasurer for fifteen years. During his time in St. Louis, he also served as the vicar and the guardian for the friar community. He later moved to Chicago, Ill, where he became the director of Franciscan Outreach Ministries for three years, and then, for eighteen more years, was part of the staff at St. Peter’s Church in the Loop. For six years, he also was the guardian. He served on the QU Board of Trustees for four terms and served as board chair for two of those terms. He moved to the retirement community at Blessed Giles in Manitowoc, Wis. in December 2017.

hen I reflect on the 2019-2020 fiscal year—as well as the university’s rich history—the word resilience comes to mind.

Although the world has changed significantly since Quincy University’s founding 160 years ago, the commitment to our mission has remained steadfast. Whether it be a recession, a World War or a global pandemic, our QC/QU community’s commitment to providing an exceptional education rooted in the Franciscan tradition has not wavered. We have consistently graduated critical thinkers who are well-prepared to address the challenges they will face in all aspects of their lives. Also paramount, is our long-standing commitment to respecting each person as a sister or brother with dignity, value, and worth.

As far as our university investors, YOU have remained loyal through thick and thin. YOU realize the importance of our university not only to our students, but to the continued prosperity of our local community. YOUR generosity, as well as that of the alumni, friends, and business leaders who preceded you, is the reason we have educated future leaders for the last 160 years, and with YOUR continued support, we will continue preparing men and women for leadership and for the transformation of the world for generations to come. With gratitude for a record-breaking fundraising year,

PUT YOUR MONEY WHERE YOUR HEART IS. FUEL YOUR PASSIONS WITH CHARITABLE GIFT ANNUITIES

A charitable gift annuity is a simple contract under which a not-for-profit organization, like Quincy University – in return for a transfer of cash, marketable securities or other assets – agrees to pay a fixed amount of money to the donor for their lifetime. The donor establishes a fund which provides a current tax deduction, plus a stream of tax advantaged income with attractive interest rates.

BENEFITS FOR YOU: • • • •

Lifetime payments Income tax deduction No probate on donated assets Ensure long-term stability for the not-for-profit organization
