Symbol of Our Commitment Dear Friends, Church buildings have long held a prominent place in our hearts and our histories. For the Quincy University community, the St. Francis Solanus Chapel is most definitely a spiritual touchstone. Hundreds of alumni and friends have been married there. The lives of loved ones have been celebrated in funerals there. And thousands of QU students, faculty, staff, and community members have worshipped there. The QU Chapel is a sacred space of reverence, worship, beauty, and awe. The St. Francis Solanus Chapel turns 100 years old in 2012, so Dr. Robert Gervasi greets graduates and their families at the Baccalaureate Mass.

it is fitting that this issue of QUniverse celebrate its history and its promise for the future. Two articles by Fr. Joe Zimmerman frame the topic. One is a visit to the chapel itself, past and present. The other is a portrait of Fr. Tom Brown, the friar-artist whose vision decades ago transformed the chapel into the visual splendor we

Seniors Give Back to QU The Senior Class Gift Committee of 2012, which included Victoria Melville, Andrea Zamora, Kevin Hahn, Michael Varrone, Amanda Grimm, Kayland Smyth, and Stephannie Aguilera, organized and presented the Third Annual Senior Class Gift Event. Proceeds from March’s elegant evening of wine and cheese went toward the restoration of stainedglass windows in the QU chapel, a campus treasure that is celebrating its one-hundredth anniversary. The senior class wanted to help fund chapel restoration because the chapel plays such a significant role in the lives of students. The senior class believes the chapel is important for incoming students as they are welcomed there the summer before their freshman year at the registration and advisement program. The chapel has been a continuous place of worship, praise, music, beauty, and peace, and the senior class gift committee wishes to preserve it for all future Quincy University students. Campus clubs, organizations, academic departments, and members of the Quincy community donated items for a silent auction held during the event, raising $6,784 for the chapel restoration fund.

Guests lined up to enjoy the wine and cheese party, which helped fund the Senior Class Gift. Spirit Knob Winery, just north of Quincy, generously donated all wine for the fete.

Helping Hands for Haiti Haiti Connection, one of many student organizations at Quincy University, works to develop and sustain relationships with communities in Haiti while also leading fundraising projects to support those Haitian communities. This year the group was able to work with a clean water program, Gadyen Dlo, which aids in providing clean water to thousands of people. Haiti Connection also gives annual support to a medical clinic and nurse and is involved in reforestation projects, educational and school sponsorship programs, and a nutrition center. To finance these efforts, Haiti Connection holds fundraisers throughout the year, including a coffee sale and a “Bottle for Lives” campaign through which group members distributed bottles at local churches during Lent, asking people to fill the bottles with pocket change. Finally, the group hosts an annual “Haiti Night” at Jed’s, a Quincy gathering spot. Haiti Connection members dedicate themselves to fundraising throughout the year so they can continue supporting life-changing projects for communities in Haiti. Through both financial and spiritual support, the group is able to raise money each year to truly help the less fortunate.

Viva Italia! Quincy students, led by Dr. Megan Boccardi, took a gondola ride in Venice, saw Michelangelo’s David in Florence, walked in St. Francis’s footsteps in Assisi, and, yes, studied as part of a new summer abroad program at the American University in Rome. Students took two classes at the university, one of which was taught by Dr. Robert Manning, who also accompanied the group. In their spare time, students crammed in as many sights and experiences as possible. Students stayed in apartments in well-established neighborhoods near the university, which gave them a glimpse of family life in Italy.

Boccardi says, “It is amazing how well everyone got along.”

And next year, QU will again have a road leading to Rome. 10

Chapel and Campus Ministry Host a Variety of Events The QU chapel, a place for worship and praise, is always looking for more students to become involved. In particular, Campus Ministry looks for students to serve as lectors, Eucharistic ministers, singers, musicians, and hospitality greeters during the Sunday evening mass.

Students visited various Quincy locations sharing song and worship.

Campus Ministry offers a variety of other events and activities that encourage student involvement. Franciscan Scholars is a program open to freshmen and sophomores who have a passion for service. Students involved are required to perform a certain number of service hours each semester and then share personal reflections based on their experiences. Those who fulfill these requirements receive financial assistance from the university. The university’s chaplain, Brother Ed Arambasich, hosted Street Retreats this year. During these retreats, students spend the entire day reflecting in prayer as they walk along country roads. Also during the event, students visit a soup kitchen and help in whatever capacity they are needed. A final event that has proved to be very popular among QU students is “Hide and Seek at the Woodland Cemetery.” Students (and some friars) search for a picture or an item that Brother Ed has hidden in the cemetery. The first group to find the item wins a special prize, such as a pizza outing or another meal.

Participants in Br. Ed's Hide and Seek at Woodland Cemetery.

Campus Ministry diligently encourages student participation in everything from masses in the QU chapel to games in the cemetery. Each event offers students the opportunity to have fun and to connect with one another in a spiritual way.

Life-Changing Service Projects over Spring Break “Traveling during spring break is always a good thing, but traveling to go help others is a privilege,” says junior Matthew Meglan, expressing his feelings about service trips made by Quincy University students. Meglan, along with graduate student Jacob McGuire and senior Kevin Hahn, traveled to Louisiana over spring break. During their trip, the group had service opportunities with NO/AIDS Task Force and Project Lazarus. Both New Orleans area organizations serve people who are HIV positive or have AIDS. NO/AIDS Task Force, a not-for-profit group, provides everything from counseling and medical clinics to assistance in finding jobs and housing. The Quincy University students served by organizing shelves, restacking boxes, and aiding the organization in any way possible. They also interacted with many of the residents and learned more about them and their stories. On the last day of the service trip, Meglan, McGuire, and Hahn worked for Project Lazarus, a not-for-profit group that provides alternative housing to people infected with HIV/AIDS. The QU group cleared invasive vines from the local trees and set up new flower beds. This service trip is just one more way Quincy University students help those in need. Each year new service opportunities arise, and with the opportunities comes the chance for students to affect the lives of others while also growing and learning as individuals.

The Quincy baseball team tried to repeat its late season success once again this season but saw its run end short of repeating as Great Lakes Valley Conference tournament champions. The Hawks stood at just 21-18 late in the season before winning their final seven regular season games and entering the GLVC Tournament. The Hawks, who won the GLVC championship in 2011 for the first time since 2000, entered this year as the No. 5 seed but were knocked out early with a pair of losses. Despite the early exit, several Hawk players were honored for the season, including Drake Austin ’13 and Aaron Priestess ’13, who each earned All-Region honors. www.quincy.edu

Starting over With the loss of the program’s all-time home run leader and all-time strikeout leader the Lady Hawk softball team knew the 2012 season would be a trying one. However, the youthful team provided plenty of surprises and hope for the future. The Lady Hawks welcomed in thirteen new players and finished the season with a 26-28 record, advancing to its fourth-straight GLVC Tournament. With more than half the team consisting of new players, the Lady Hawks got off to a slow start, but by the end of the year they had come together. Needing a win on the final day of the regular season the Lady Hawks split with Missouri-St. Louis to secure the final spot into the GLVC Tournament. Freshman pitcher Wendy Macias ’15 added to the 2012 highlights by becoming just the second Lady Hawk pitcher to record a no-hitter, doing so against McKendree University. Macias and Ashleigh Roscetti ’13 were both named to the GLVC West All-Conference team.

The Quincy tennis programs were at opposite ends of the spectrum this season with the women’s team saying goodbye to a pair of the program’s all-time best players while the men’s team greeted a standout freshman just beginning his career. The women’s team will lose Leslie and Pam Ganer ’12, twin sisters, who have helped lead the Lady Hawk program since their arrival. The duo leave the program among its all-time leaders in both singles and doubles wins, while Pam Ganer capped her career by being named to the GLVC All-Conference team. Ian Hinkamper ’15 meanwhile made an immediate impact for the men’s team and finished with a 15-9 record playing No. 1 singles for the Hawks and garnered AllConference honors as well.

Garber Guides Lady Hawks Back to Dance Last summer was one of change for Quincy women’s basketball head coach Jeni Garber. Making the move from assistant coach to head coach and joining a new program, one could understand if there was a little needed time for an adjustment. However, Coach Garber turned to what she knows best: basketball. And in doing so she continued the resurgence of the Lady Hawk basketball team and guided them to their second consecutive NCAA Tournament and eighth appearance in the last ten years. Garber, who was named the 2011-12 Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Coach of the Year, led the Lady Hawks to a 22-8 overall record and captured the GLVC West Division title with a 15-3 mark. She also helped the Lady Hawks roll off 12 straight wins at one point during the season and had two players, Linsay Henke ’12 and Ali Schwagmeyer ’12, named to the All-Region team. Garber’s 22 wins are tied for the most by a Lady Hawk head coach in their first season, joining Frank Longo who recorded 22 wins in 1979. Jeni Garber

If Quincy University has a heart, it would be the St. Francis Solanus Chapel, where so many students have been ushered into the Quincy community and where students, friars, professors, and staff have congregated for a hundred years. This very special place is celebrating its 100th anniversary, still playing its central role in the life of the university. But the last time you visited, you may have gazed upward for inspiration and seen an angel with peeling wings. The chapel desperately needs a facelift, one the university is raising funds for right now. Lucky for QU that the structure’s bones are good and that the last renovation, completed decades ago, was spectacular.

The original interior of the chapel, shortly after construction in 1912.

The architect for the new chapel was a lay brother, Br. Anselm Wolff, OFM, who had just finished building the magnificent St. Anthony Church on Meramec Street in south St. Louis. The Quincy College chapel became a small copy of that larger church, minus its two steeples. Sadly, Br. Anselm was dead before the chapel was completed. His promising career as an architect was cut short by ill health, and he was never to imitate his older confrere, Br. Adrian Wewer, OFM, who built hundreds of churches and other buildings during his long career in Sacred Heart Province. The college chapel architecture is Romanesque, featuring rounded arches, in contrast to what is often called Midwest

Gothic, featuring pointed arches. However, the original artists who decorated the new chapel apparently did not appreciate the historical roots of the architecture. They covered its walls with what I would describe as German kitsch—pious saints floating on clouds surrounded by pious angels. The old chapel did have one striking feature: an inscription on the arch that frames the entire sanctuary. In Latin it reads: “Remember your Creator in the days of your youth. Fear God, and observe His commandments.” (The students of 1912 would not have been stumped by Latin, then the core of language study.) By the fifties, Fr. August's shoebox was stuffed with about

$13,000, just shy of the projected $14,000 needed to complete Fr. Tom's inspired paintings, based on churches in Europe. The sum would do, and Fr. Tom farmed the designs out to a firm in Omaha, who painted them on canvas; Fr. Tom had them glued to the walls. The dominant and most striking of these designs is the figure of Christ as “Pantokrator” (“ruler of all”) over the main altar. Fr. Tom copied this from the cathedral of Cefalu on the north coast of Sicily. He got the idea for the procession of seventy saints (thirty-five women on the west and thirty-five men on the east) from a church in Ravenna. The rich blue tapestry design on the walls of the sanctuary came from the mausoleum of Gallia Placidia (the emperor Constantine’s mother) in Ravenna. The repainting, finished in 1955, was Phase One of Fr. Tom’s renovation of the chapel. Phase Two came in 1970, after the Second Vatican Council. Fr. Tom removed the communion rail, extended the sanctuary platform out into the congregation’s space, and turned the pews on either side of the platform so that they faced the altar. In the process he further reduced the size of the old main altar in the apse. Fr. Tom was good at using pieces from the old to make the new. He built the new altar of sacrifice out of pieces of the old altars he deconstructed and did the same to create a credence table, celebrant’s chair, and lectern. But he did not win them all. Fr. Gabriel Brinkman, OFM, a man six and a half feet tall, forced Fr. Tom to raise the height of the movable altar two or three inches. The piece of wood that accomplished this task can still be seen as an extra layer of wood under the altar table. The Quincy University Chapel is the product of a dying architect, an eccentric guardian, and an enterprising young art teacher. There are surely those among us who will continue its story.

Fr. Tom Brown, OFM, redesigns the interior of the chapel using the Byzantine style. Workmen transform the space to incorporate motifs and iconography from important Italian churches.

With the building of Friars Hall, construction begins on a new choir for use by the friars for prayer. Fr. Brown designs the new choir, which is attached to the east transept of the main chapel.

and gender blind. Reflecting upon that time, she says, “I think as females we had advantages because there were so few of us. You could catch people’s attention. But if you didn’t do well, it reflected on the entire gender.” It was sometimes tough to be heard as a woman in a man’s world. “One time I came home and my mom asked me why I was talking so loud. I pondered that and realized that when I was at meetings I would make a suggestion and get ignored. A man would make the same suggestion and it would be heard. I began to compensate by talking louder.” In the late seventies, the IBI agents combined with the Illinois State Police detectives, and over the years, the percentage of women rose. Kettelkamp says (really too modestly), “There were a couple of bumps in the road; I helped pave the way.” Kettelkamp served for twenty-nine years and was the first woman to obtain the rank of colonel in the Illinois State Police. Her police work, including experience with internal investigations, some church-related work she did after leaving the force, and her Catholicism made her the ideal candidate for the position with the Office of Child and Youth Protection. She notes the similarities between the police and the church: “Both [organizations] are dominated by white males. Everyone wears uniforms and you can tell who they are by their uniform.” On family “I had great role models. My parents worked hard, they paid their bills, and they were involved in the church.” Kettelkamp regularly visits her mother who is now in a nursing home. Her father died in 1984, just a month before the birth of Kettelkamp’s son, Zachary. Like other single moms, Kettelkamp juggled professional responsibilities and home life and is proud of the way Zachary and his older sister, Katie, turned out. She says, “I’ve tried to give my children gifts of experience rather than gifts of stuff. I hope that those experiences have enriched their lives.” Today Zachary works for Sysco, the food-service company, coaches high school football, and has a lawn-service business. Catholic and always told his children to “keep the faith.” Kettelkamp attends mass and prays regularly. And she thinks about faith and what it means to her life. “I have lived long enough to know that our decisions do have eternal consequences. We aren’t here to do our bidding; we are here to do our creator’s bidding.” A priest once asked Kettelkamp if seeing the seedy side of the church had affected her faith. Kettelkamp replied that her faith was not based on people “but on the precepts of the religion and Jesus Christ. My faith is deeper than that.” On Quincy University Kettelkamp believes that QU “prepared me to think independently. It gave me the confidence and skills to progress in life.” It also gave her some of her greatest friendships. “I have kept a very special group of friends from Quincy. We initially met in the Garner dorm and then moved to Lind Street suites and finally a house.” The group still gathers, most recently in the Hill, the Italian area of St. Louis, where they dined at Rigazzi’s. “I hope I have shown my daughter [also a Quincy grad] that you can sustain friendships through the decades. You move away, your lives take different turns, but some people stay with you.” Kettelkamp sums up life so far so well: “I have been fortunate to be involved in things that make a positive difference in the world.” www.quincy.edu

rancis Hall Room 432 is a serious place as the students in TRS 370 vigorously discuss the meaning of a passage composed by C.S. Lewis. Transported “to Narnia and beyond,” they encounter an intricate web of ideas and connect with great minds, past and present. It’s also a place where laughter is apt to break out as Dr. Daniel Strudwick concludes with one of his occasional pasta-cooking tips, gleaned from the Italian kitchen of his childhood home or the restaurants in which he worked on route to earning a PhD. Or perhaps he’s fielding a question about Christian eschatology—or the reason he rides a motorcycle to work almost every day despite Quincy’s unpredictable midwestern climate. Strudwick, assistant professor of theology and director of the honors program, easily balances the profound with the light-hearted to create an exciting experience of learning. Whether he’s teaching an introductory survey or an intensive study, like the C.S. Lewis course, Strudwick imparts to his students a challenge to “live with passion, study with intensity and to undertake the difficult task of integrating knowledge.” Born in New Jersey, Strudwick spent much of his youth with his parents and two younger siblings near Phoenix, where the family still lives. Called to the spiritual life early in high school, he spent his college years in a seminary situated within the monastic community of St. Meinrad. “I lived with 500-plus men atop a hill in southern Indiana,” he recalls. “Our life consisted in praying, studying, and arguing.” Strudwick learned to disagree while maintaining charity: “We may have argued in

At this point, he recognized his call to married life and to teaching. He and his wife, Amanda, have three children Daniel Leonard (five), Trinity Eve (three) and Maria Brielle (born in early June). After earning a PhD in systematic theology from Duquesne University (Pittsburgh) in 2007, Strudwick joined the QU faculty in 2008, drawn by “the notable concern of my colleagues to work on excellence in pedagogy. Friar as Architect Could we celebrate the chapel without celebrating Father Tom Brown’s contributions to it? No. Here is a man, a model for anyone trying to fit their own gifts into the matrix of the needs of others. By Fr. Joseph Zimmerman

O

n the sanctuary wall of the First Union Congregational Church in Quincy there is a cross, carved from two massive pieces of wood. The artist was Fr. Tom Brown, OFM. The cross is a symbol of Fr. Tom’s outreach in the Quincy religious community and to the way he used his art to cross boundaries of religion and generation. His reputation throughout the area rested on his originality in using a variety of art forms to beautify churches undergoing renovation after the Second Vatican Council. His being awarded the Quincy University Excellence in Teaching Award in 1992 speaks to his ability to relate to his students. And he never shied from new challenges. Shortly before he died in 1994, Fr. Tom was experimenting with computer art. Fr. Tom, who was born in Gary, Indiana, in 1922, began his priestly career with the desire to teach theology. Instead, immediately after his ordination in 1949, the Franciscan Provincial superior sent him to Quincy College to teach art. This arranged marriage developed into real love and great fruitfulness. Not only did he create original works of sculpture, painting, and photography, but also he shaped the interior decoration of Quincy for years. Fr. Gabriel Brinkman, OFM, president of the college for two six-year terms, used to say that women hated Fr. Tom’s color schemes but men liked them. The men won out. That is until a new president came on the scene who “knew not Fr. Tom,” and the orange tones gave way to white. 26

QUniverse | Summer 2012

Fr. Tom’s masterpiece is undoubtedly the university’s chapel, described elsewhere in this issue. The last piece he worked on, dedicated just a few weeks before his death, is the Windows to the Future stainless steel sculpture in front of Willer Hall. But smaller evidences of his productivity showed up in offices all over the campus—bronze sculptures of saints, wooden carvings, and photographs of scenes in the Quincy area as well as scenes from Fr. Tom’s overseas travels. I have always thought that one of his finest carvings was a figure of St. Francis fashioned from a single log about ten feet high. Francis is standing with his arms stretched straight over his head. Fr. Tom mounted this carving in the yard of the Camp on the Bay, a camp then owned by the university on Quincy Bay, the scene of many faculty cookouts and parties.

The statue was standing at the center of a semicircle of tall cottonwood trees, trees I had never noticed until he put the statue of Francis in its middle. He took great care to anchor the carving in a concrete base, which reminded one of a tooth, with its roots extending out into the earth. Unfortunately, the floods rotted the statue at its base and it apparently floated away and was never seen again. When the Franciscan Province of the Sacred Heart decided in 1963 to build a seminary a mile north of campus, Fr. Tom was asked to create the windows for its chapel. This involved designing thirty-two windows three feet wide and fifteen feet high, as well as another sixteen smaller three-by-three windows. He chose the glass from a thousand samples and had it fabricated by Winterich’s, a stained-glass establishment near Cleveland. The result is a riot of brilliant color, tamed to become part of a story of the life of Mary, the seven sacraments of the Church, the “last things” (death, judgment, heaven, hell), and the set I think he must have enjoyed making most: Francis’s Canticle of the Creatures (Canticle of the Sun). Every couple of years Fr. Tom managed to take off on a tour of some faraway place: Europe, Asia, Latin America. He said that he needed to refresh the slides he used in his art appreciation class. I could never figure out where he got the money for these trips. I finally concluded that Fr. Tom was one of those people who could motivate others to support what he was doing—an “if you build it they will come” mentality. The figures of Mary and Joseph that hang today near the elevator outside the chapel were another project that he prided himself on. The statue of Mary is a little shocking: There is no disguising the fact that she has breasts. Joseph’s hands are disproportionately large, Fr. Tom’s way of saying, I think, that this man and woman used the basic elements of their humanity to shield and nurture the Word made Flesh. If they could do it, so can we. He was greatly distressed one day to discover that the statue of Mary had disappeared from the chapel wall. She was found hiding in the chapel confessional. Someone was evidently trying to make a point, although none of us were ever quite clear what that point was. Fr. Tom’s life as a teacher ended rather quickly. It could not have been more than one or two years from the time when he began to be slowed down and the time when he was forced to move to a nursing facility, where he died in just a few weeks. He was able to travel to Quincy for the dedication of Windows to the Future. His future with God was to begin just days from that joyful event. QUniverse | Summer 2012

Here, through common friends, Tom met Sue Traylor, a high school senior and lifelong resident of Quincy. Tom (a Cicero, Illinois, native) and Sue hit it off right away and began dating not long after. Since Sue was only a high school senior and would ultimately spend her freshman year at Western Illinois, it would actually be another two years before Tom and Sue were together as Quincy students. Tom graduated with a degree in history in 1968 and Sue in 1969 with a degree in elementary education. They were married in the Quincy College Chapel on May 17, 1969—exactly one day before Sue’s graduation ceremony—by Father John Joseph “J. J.” Lakers, a teacher and mentor to both during their college years. Both Tom and Sue are recently retired: Sue from her teaching career and Tom from several years as a transportation dispatcher. They’ve resided in Berwyn, Illinois, for the past thirty-seven years and have two adult children and four grandchildren.

June 2011—maY 2012 QuinCY univeRsiTY fund

Due to the generous investments of our alumni, friends, employees, parents, businesses, foundations, trusts, and others, we surpassed—for the second year—our $1,000,000 QU Fund Goal. Our loyal supporters donated over $1,030,000 in support of the university’s greatest needs and endowment. Total gifts, including restricted and estate gifts, were nearly $3.4 million. It may sound rather trite when I say that your gift truly makes a difference, but it does. A young man who graduated this spring illustrates the point. One day during his sophomore year, this young man, a first-generation college student, came to my office to say goodbye. He was faced with economic challenges that he and his family couldn’t figure out how to overcome, so he was heading home. In my mail that afternoon I received a letter from an alum who graduated in the ‘80s. She shared that she received scholarship assistance as a student and it was time to pay it forward. When I unfolded the check and read the dollar amount, I was stunned—just the amount this young man needed! The story continues. At graduation, this young man told me that he had not forgotten the dire situation he had been in a couple of years earlier. He again expressed thanks for the generous donation that enabled him to stay in school and told me in parting that we can count on him to pay it forward too! Every donor, every dollar, can and does make a difference. Once again, thank you for your continued support and for making a difference in the lives of QU students.

QU ALUMNI FOCUS

Justin Meats ’99 & Erin Meats ’02 CONNECTING We met in the chapel and it was an important part of our college years and our relationship. We grew spiritually through frequent masses, adoration, praise, worship, and other campus ministry activities. Justin proposed in front of the Tabernacle and all of our college friends were with us when we got married. COMMITTING We are glad to hear a new preservation effort is under way. It was always sad to see the paint peeling in the dome by Jesus. We both have spent many hours in the chapel…. it was always a calming place to have Jesus looking down at you and

being surrounded by the saints. SUPPORTING We think it is important to give back to the community. We both feel it is important to support Catholic education at all levels and we have a special place in our hearts for QU.

WE ASK FOR YOUR SUPPORT to help preserve and revitalize the Quincy University chapel. The preservation of the chapel and its spiritual presence will ensure
