very season and every year at Quincy University is filled with memorable moments, but none more memorable than commencement each May. Like

each individual student, each commencement ceremony has a distinctive character, a unique personality. Yet each is an integral expression of QU's mission and tradition—the education of

successful students for lives of meaning and service—stretching back to 1860. The summer issue of QUniverse usually highlights commencement as the culmination of students' success. This year the theme of student success is even more prominent, and for good reason. Thanks to a very generous gift from an anonymous donor, a new Student Success Center is being constructed throughout the lower level of the Brenner Library, under the aegis of the Office of Academic Support. An engaging article in this issue provides more details. The key message is

that we want students not only to come to QU but also to stay and succeed here; and now even more resources, human and material, will be directed toward that goal. In the end, of course, our Franciscan mission interprets true success not only as personal well-being but also as service to others. This issue spotlights students and staff who embrace that integration with gusto.

Peace and all good, Dr. Robert A. Gervasi, President

n May 11, donning the traditional black gowns and iconic mortarboard caps, over 470 undergraduate and graduate students proudly marched into the Pepsi Arena to the strains of “Pomp and Circumstance” to ceremoniously move their tassels from one side to the other and officially be named Quincy University’s Class of 2014.

Dr. Ann Behrens, acting vice president for academic affairs, welcomed the capacity crowd before Reverend J. Derran Combs, OFM, delivered the opening invocation. The Quincy University symphonic band, under the direction of Bill Machold, accompanied senior communication major Jacqueline Pohlman as she performed a masterful rendition of “The Star Spangled Banner.” Theology and philosophy major and senior class representative Fritz Lauriston addressed his fellow graduates, families, and friends in a spirited welcome. Reminiscing about his own experience and extending heartfelt congratulations to the class of 2014, Lauriston closed with a quote from artist Drake: “We did it,” he said, “We did it.”

“He often referred to Quincy as the center of the universe.” Bill O’Donnell, 1973 alumnus, former trustee, and longtime alumni director who passed away in early 2013, was posthumously awarded an honorary doctorate of human letters recognizing his many years of service to Quincy University and the Quincy community. His wife, Maureen Breakey O'Donnell ’76, graciously accepted the award in O’Donnell’s honor. She said, “Bill made the best friends of his life here at Quincy and they remain close and supportive to us today. This is where we met and fell in love. He often referred to Quincy as the center of the universe, and it was the center of his universe . . . I know he would have a little fun with this [award] and insist that his friends now refer to him as Dr. Bill.”

“Find your passion, then go make a difference.” Current board member and senior director of business operations and planning for ESPN/X-Games, Linda Moore ’81, delivered the commencement address, which intertwined various biographical anecdotes and teachings of St. Francis and encouraged the graduates to work toward the seemingly unattainable.

“Find your passion, then go make a difference. If we are going to find our passion, I think we can look at how St. Francis found his passion as an example for us. Start by doing what is necessary, then do what is possible, and suddenly, you are doing the impossible.” - Linda Moore ‘81 She likened these lessons to her own life in which she turned a volunteer role as Quincy basketball statistician into a series of positions in college and professional athletics and, eventually, a career within ESPN, the “Worldwide Leader in Sports”—the “impossible,” as she called it. “I did what was necessary, I did what was possible, and suddenly, the impossible happened. As you graduate, ask yourself, what is your passion? How will you make a difference?” she asked the class, reassuringly adding, “Each one of you has a passion and each one of you will make a difference.” Taking the stage for remarks inspired by Pharrell Williams’s 2014 chart-topper “Happy,” President Robert Gervasi enthusiastically addressed the new alumni with an inspiring closing to the ceremony. When asked if they felt “like a room without a roof” and if “happiness was [their] truth,” the graduates responded affirmatively with cheers of their own. As the ceremony ended, the class of 2014 exited the arena, two by two, to a standing ovation from faculty, staff, family, and friends—all of whom were very, very happy. QUniverse | Summer 2014

Strides for

SHANNON On Saturday,April 5,a spirit of friendship and support flooded North 18th Street as nearly 100 students and faculty members participated in the second-annual event known as “Strides for Shannon.”

This 5K run and walk supports student Shannon Peters in her journey to recovery after she was struck by a vehicle in January 2013. Participants and the crowd were both engaged in this spirit-lifting event, where onlookers flung washable, multicolored paint at those who went by (a new trend in the running world).

The event not only raised spirits and streetsafety awareness but funds as well. The QU community has been striving to ease the family’s burden of mounting medical bills after Shannon endured a six-month hospital stay and faces a long rehabilitation. “She is finally out of the hospital, but there is a lot of therapy to come, so there are a lot of medical expenses,” said sorority sister Ashley Cahill ‘15. “We just wanted to help take some of that burden off of their shoulders.” Students have now presented the family with close to $14,000, raised in the last two years through Strides for Shannon. Support has also come from two local businesses: Culver’s and Texas Roadhouse. In the week before the event, both restaurants allowed student volunteers to trade their services for ten percent of the night’s proceeds from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Texas Roadhouse also offered free appetizers to customers who donated five dollars to the cause.

This kind of fun and interactive scene is common in the MacHugh Theatre, located in the bottom of Francis Hall. Quincy University’s Theatre Department, headed by Connie Phillips, lecturer in theatre, strives to give both cast members and audience members something to remember. The theatre program allows students to try their skills both front and back stage, with roles sometimes interchanging during a single production. This semester, two girls—Colleen McCormack ’15, and Caitlin Watson ’14— shared the role of Sleeping Beauty, allowing them to alternate as off-stage workers as well. 8

QUniverse | Summer 2014

“I believe it is good for students to see what happens both on-and off-stage,” says Phillips. “This gives them a chance to know theatre from all perspectives.” Students really shined in this semester’s production, Sleeping Beauty. Breanna Myer ’15, created the sound design and Samantha Nielsen’14, created the lighting design. Colleen McCormack had her first opportunity to codirect, and she now sees the theatre in a whole new light. “Codirecting Sleeping Beauty has given me the chance to experience theatre from a new perspective,” she said. “It was definitely an experience that I will never forget.”

After she was given little hope of walking or talking again, Shannon has beaten the odds. “Although Shannon is still not able to have a full conversation, this was a huge step. Before the event she was only able to walk one block,” said Ashley Cahill. “This was something we will never forget.”

Recitals Break Record Recitals by five students hit the high notes of the semester at the Connie Niemann Center for Music. Junior recitals were performed by two vocalists, Emily Frier ‘15 and Linda Bellamy ‘15, and one saxophonist, Darron Lillard ‘15; seniors Mack Burge ‘14, percussionist, and Andria Ard ‘14, bass clarinetist, shared the stage in a voluntary recital. Both the QU community and surrounding Quincy area were invited to these four individual performances. Amy Stollberg, instructor of vocal music and coordinator of music program, says it was a recordbreaking semester in the number of solo recitals played.

“The number of solo recitals this year is unique and really sends a nice message to the Quincy community about how passionate the students here are about what they are doing. Especially with one of the recitals being completely voluntary, it shows that students are passionate about what they are already doing.” — Amy Stollberg Many students perform professionally outside of Quincy University before they graduate, benefiting both the students and the community. “They are already getting career experience while they are here,” said Stollberg. “It is wonderful that we are able to do that.” QUniverse | Summer 2014

Strapping on a tool belt may not seem the ideal way to spend spring break, but for one group of students, this spring break was all about giving a break to others. Twelve students joined Matthew Meglan ’13, campus ministry graduate assistant and trip coordinator, as they arrived on the job at Long Beach, New York, this past March to work in homes still in need of repair after the destruction of Hurricane Sandy in October 2012. Working with an All Hands Volunteers disaster team, students replaced insulation, put up drywall, and painted walls, among other tasks. Through their ready hands and willing hearts, these students had the exact tools needed to make a difference.

Spring Break: London Calling

A

group of Quincy University students ventured overseas during the 2014 winter break to study in Europe. Eleven students accompanied by 1999 alumna and current assistant professor of history, Megan Boccardi, PhD, dropped their bags off at Stylotel, an ultramodern hotel housed in a nineteenth-century building near Hyde Park, and began a nine-day journey exploring European culture and traditions. Along the Thames River and atop London’s giant Ferris wheel, the London Eye, students got their first panoramic views of the city. Then history was beneath their feet as they strolled through the grounds of the Tower of London and stood before the prehistoric monoliths of Stonehenge. Students also learned about the gothic and storied Westminster Abbey and were introduced to the darker side of London during an evening Jack the Ripper tour. Students zipped away for a night in Paris. In the City of Lights, they were captivated by the smile of Mona Lisa as they toured the Louvre and awed by famous landmarks, including the Eiffel Tower. They discovered sacred fragments of the Catholic faith at the Notre Dame Cathedral, which houses what is believed to be remains of the crucifixion.

mlk day: serving & celebrating On January 18, 2014, seventy students participated in the MLK Day of Service hosted by the Multicultural and Leadership Programs. Students from diverse backgrounds, cultures, and disciplines gathered for breakfast in the main dining room before dispersing across the city to serve. Students painted at Quanada House, which helps those affected by domestic violence and sexual assault; sorted and put away food-item donations at the Salvation Army; and spent time with seniors at the Good Samaritan Home. Students also helped at Bickford of Quincy, an assisted living and memory-care residence for seniors; Cathedral of Worship Church; and Madonna House, which provides a food pantry, emergency shelter, and other services for those at risk of homelessness. When they finished their work, the students returned to school to have a late lunch and share their experiences. The director of Multicultural and Leadership Programs describes the experience:

“Students truly honored the spirit of Martin Luther King in their devotion to serve the Quincy community. No doubt, we left Quincy better than we found it.” — Calvin Johnson Several days later, on January 24, students and faculty members filled the seats of MacHugh Theatre to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Also hosted by the Multicultural and Leadership Programs office, the audience was welcomed by President Robert Gervasi and emcee Marquez Brown ’12, a graduate assistant. Voices of Praise, the university gospel choir, performed several songs, including “We Shall Overcome.” “In both events, we were there to commemorate the life of Martin Luther King,” said Johnson. “The legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. belongs to us all, and it is our responsibility to carry it forward and spread those ideals.”

“Going to London and Paris and the surrounding areas was a real life-changing event. To be on the ground in the places I have to-date only read about in class was invaluable to say the least.” — History major, Greg Carter ’14

QU Service Trips Broaden Students’ Horizons...

D

oing what might seem like a small task can lift a great burden. “When I signed up to go to New Orleans, I never expected that I would be scraping paint off railings,” said Amanda Klein ’15, who went on the 2014 spring break mission trip to New Orleans. Her group served at a convent that housed more than sixty nuns – all nearing the age of eighty. Klein said she was surprised at some of the tasks that fell under the category of service. “Although it didn’t always feel like we were really helping others, we made a real difference and saved money for the ladies that lived in the motherhouse,” she said. “The experience showed me that even a small, indirect task could go a long way to helping others.” Klein’s trip was one of the many offerings promoted by Campus Ministry through its Mission Possible initiative.

Megan Boccardi, PhD, assistant professor of history, and Fr. John Doctor, OFM, vice president for mission and ministry, were instrumental in the development of the servicelearning program. They saw the potential to hone in on these service experiences and give students a heightened awareness of the effect that service can have. “This is really about leading students to become servant leaders,” said Fr. Ferd Cheri, OFM, Campus Ministry director.

12

QUniverse | Summer 2014

“There is no better way for students to understand servant leadership than to first become servants themselves.” To optimize student experience, service is now better tracked and executed with reflections, questions, and essays built into the requirement. With service now part of the Quincy University curriculum, it has become a priority for students, and they are taking full advantage of the opportunities that Campus Ministry has to offer. So, in the same spirit of St. Francis, students are extending the powerful message of service and hope across the country as they venture far and wide into the mission field. “Campus Ministry thought that mission trips could be a great way to earn service learning credit hours, so we designed it around that aspect,” said Matthew Meglan ’13, Campus Ministry graduate assistant and trip coordinator. “Also to get everyone’s service learning hours in, it is easier to do it at one time.” In response Fr. Ferd and Meglan set a goal, and they called it Mission Possible. The mission called for 500 QU students to attend mission trips within the current school year, and students from all disciplines answered the call. With over 4,000 service hours collectively earned from 2013 to 2014, seven different states were served through fourteen major mission trips.

students are expected to perform thirty hours of service before graduation through a service-learning requirement that was incorporated into the curriculum in 2010. Service has always been woven into the experience at Quincy University, but service learning gives a more purposeful element to the work being done, and Campus Ministry has been promoting service learning.

"There is no better way for students to understand servant leadership than to first become servants themselves." — Fr. Ferd Two of many students who donated service hours this past school year, Sarah Niemann '15 and Julie Holdner '15, Campus Ministry volunteers, assisted All Hands Volunteers Disaster Response Team. issions were already loosely structured before service learning

became part of Campus Ministry’s curricular and co-curricular programs. Former Campus Ministry graduate assistant Brian Silverstein ’09 set a goal of having Quincy students serve in all fifty states. “It was a lofty goal,” explained Meglan, who as a student participated in the 50 States of Service project. “We set it high because we knew it would motivate us to reach high.” Through the program, students reached thirty-eight states in twenty months. The current mission and service trips, now a staple of the QU spring break options, are teaching students to widen their expectations of what it really means to serve. From tornado cleanup in Oklahoma and home repairs in New York to helping disabled children in Chicago and nuns in New Orleans, students are working hard to learn all facets of service.

"Brian Silverstein ’09 set a goal of having Quincy students serve in all fifty states. “It was a lofty goal. We set it high because we knew it would motivate us to reach high." — Matt Meglan '13 “Students are learning that service is not just one thing. It is not just remodeling homes or serving in a soup kitchen. It is really much more than just that,” said Fr. Ferd. “It is really being present to people and continually bringing dignity, life, and the presence of God to them.” Service—small or large—is not only a gift to the individual served but can also transform the heart of a servant. With each experience, students become part of a greater solution, and they begin to understand that they really can make a difference. Boccardi has now helped supervise two spring break trips: a 2013 trip to New Orleans and a 2014 trip to Long Beach, New York. She is amazed at the student involvement that the Mission Possible program has invoked. “It is part of our culture to enjoy spring break, but QU students are giving up that custom to take time to serve others” she said. “From that, they end up becoming stronger within themselves and within the school.” This outreach has stretched far beyond the borders of familiarity as students not only cross state lines but cross cultural lines as well. From the bayou to the Big Apple, students learn regional differences in language and customs. “We really want it to be a learning experience for the students. Learning cultures, learning different areas, from north to south and south to north, people must learn to appreciate each other and understand the differences,” Fr. Ferd said. “It is not just racial but regional: rural versus urban for example. They are all so different.” In Montgomery, Alabama, students visited the Civil Rights Memorial, which celebrates the Civil Rights Movement and commemorates the five-day march from Selma to Montgomery led by Martin Luther King, Jr., Students toured other Montgomery sites connected to the Civil Rights Movement. Other trips have offered parallel enrichment opportunities. When students get back to campus and digest and dissect their mission trip experiences, they are discovering how much their horizons were broadened. “Many of the students say that what impacted them the most was that they were not bitter from going through these catastrophes and not getting help and support,” Fr. Ferd said. “Just like the Hurricane Sandy survivors in New York, they were disappointed but not bitter. They rose above it and they still are even after ten years.”

Service learning trips also build bridges within the university community. Students that began a trip as strangers to one another often leave as friends. “My relationship with the QU community strengthened because it allowed me to make friends with people that I wouldn’t normally hang out with,” said Klein. “After this trip I’ve realized that there are still a lot of people on campus I don’t know, and it encouraged me to get to know people outside of my social group.” Through her sore, worked hands and the auspices of the Mission Possible initiative, Klein reached the heart of service learning. The Hawks finished the 2013-14 season with a record of 10-18, including a 5-13 mark in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. They missed the conference tournament for the first time in head coach Marty Bell’s eleven-year tenure. Guard Chris Babbitt ’14 completed one of the best careers in program history, finishing ninth all-time in career scoring with 1,353 points. He also finished with 505 field goals and 505 rebounds, playing in 107 games. Babbitt was also named to the All-GLVC second team. The season also saw the emergence of forward Evan McGaughey ’17, who was second on the team in scoring as a redshirtfreshman, while shooting 55 percent from the floor. Quincy played in eight games decided by five points or less including a 9287 overtime defeat to No. 5 Drury at Pepsi Arena and a 79-78 loss to eventual national champion Central Missouri in November. The Hawks, who played exhibition games at Xavier and Illinois State, set a school record for free throw percentage at 76 percent.

he Quincy University athletic department announced on May 13 the addition of a women’s swimming program that will begin competition in the 2015-16 academic year. The department also announced that it will add a women’s lacrosse program, which will launch in 2017-18.

interest on this front from a local level and feel the time is right to begin expanding our athletic offerings at the university. With eight other GLVC members sponsoring women’s swimming, it allows QU to connect regionally with prospective student-athletes, as well as high school and club programs.”

Swim coach Rachel Schlatter joined QU’s coaching staff in July of 2014 following a two-year stretch as head coach of the Kansas City Blazers swim team. Schlatter, a former four-year NCAA qualifier at the University of Nebraska, will spend her first full year recruiting a competitive team of student athletes in preparation for the 2015-16 inaugural season.

Quincy will be the ninth school in the Great Lakes Valley Conference to sponsor women’s swimming after the University of Missouri-St. Louis reinstated its program for 2014-15. The conference also features Drury University and Truman State University, which have combined to win 17 of the last 18 national championships in women’s swimming and diving. Drury this season claimed the inaugural GLVC Swimming & Diving Championship and won its fifth national championship in six years.

"The exciting part for me is starting a program from scratch," Schlatter says. "We can make the program what we want it to be. We will get to establish our identity at the outset." “We are very excited to launch our women’s swimming program,” said QU director of athletics Marty Bell. “We have received a great deal of

sessions, allowing QU students to help in coaching the sport. The new women’s lacrosse program will begin competition in the spring of 2018 with the hiring of a coach coming during the 2016-17 school year. “We will be launching women’s lacrosse in the 2017-18 academic year,” said Bell. “It is a sport that has grown in popularity in the Midwest. The time frame we have set forth will allow us to secure conference affiliation once we see how the sport continues to evolve in our region.” Currently, two schools in the GLVC – Rockhurst University and McKendree University – sponsor women’s lacrosse. The minimum number for GLVC sponsorship is six. The number of NCAA Division II schools sponsoring women’s lacrosse doubled from 38 in 2005-06 to 76 in 2012-13. The addition of the two programs will bring the athletic department’s offerings to 17 varsity sports. These are the first new programs launched since the restoration of men’s and women’s cross country in 2010.

At the end of each academic year, the Mart Heinen Athletic Booster Club holds a banquet for the QU student-athletes to recognize their achievements on their various fields of play and in the classroom. Each sports program chooses their H.A.W.K. (Honoring Athletes Will & Know-How) award winners to be given to their team’s “unsung hero.” The Team GPA Awards were won by the men’s soccer and softball teams as they led the athletic department in team grade-point average. The women’s volleyball team won the John Ortwerth Community Service Award. The St. Francis and St. Clare Awards, given to the student-athletes who best represent Quincy University’s Franciscan values, were awarded to Greg Eilerman ’16 (football) and Lucy Cramsey ’14 (women’s basketball). The Chuck Brady Awards, which are given to the top newcomers of the year in the athletic department, were awarded to Amy Kuhle ’17 (women’s tennis) and Xhovani Dokaj ’17 (men’s soccer). The Brother Clete VanAckeren Awards, which go to the senior student-athletes who best combine academic and athletic achievement, were awarded to Tyler Reidl ’14 (football) and Jaclyn Mastroianni ’14 (women’s soccer). Finally, the Mart Heinen Awards are given to the top senior athletes for their overall career achievements. Those awards went to Jodi Chapie ’14 (women’s soccer) and Justin Dickens ’14 (football). unded by a major anonymous grant, the Student Success Center (SSC) is housed on the lower level of the Brenner Library, just behind QYo. The SSC will offer a comprehensive support system for student success, with services that students can use throughout—as well as before and after—their time at QU and with programs that will assist them in preparing for their lives and careers after graduation. Designed by Quincy-based Architechnics, Inc., the SSC remodel is inviting, open, and bright. Glass walls and strategically placed lighting give the space an open feel, while maintaining privacy in individual rooms. It’s designed to draw students in, giving them a place where they can feel comfortable and where they have a one-stop-shop for all the tools they need to succeed. Students can find help in many ways that will aid them in their professional growth. As they start college, they’ll be able to use career assessment programs and sit down for individual advising sessions that will help them focus in on a major and start working toward career goals. Later, as they begin looking for internships or work, they’ll have access to résumébuilding resources and interview-skills training. In fact, the SSC houses interview rooms that can be used to practice interviewing as well as host potential employers. In addition to inviting employers to campus to interview students, the SSC will reach out to the larger Quincy, regional, and national communities to help students find and set up internships. Internships have become a key component of the undergraduate experience because they give students the opportunity to try out various career possibilities and gain real-world experience.

QU frames a space devoted to helping students succeed...

Spearheaded by the dean of academic support, Soumitra Ghosh, PHD, the SSC will offer students services through the Professional Enhancement Center, directed by Kristen Liesen ‘98, and the Academic Enhancement and Personal Enhancement Centers. 24

On the cusp of the unveiling of the Student Success Center in August,Cory Smith ‘14, Jeanine Riley ‘16, and Lizzy Richards ’14 explore the new space in the lower level of Brenner Library.

“The core mission of the SSC is to be a partner in students' journey to success, through the path of continuous improvement that students embark upon when they come to QU.” QUniverse | Summer 2014

As part of the Franciscan tradition that values interconnectivity, diversity, and understanding, QU—through the SSC—will continue to expand the study abroad program to help students find placement opportunities at universities around the world. The broad perspective and cultural understanding that result from such experiences will be an asset to students during their time at QU and throughout their lives. In fact, study abroad is so enriching for its participants, that Liesen hopes “to have it become a piece of the QU experience” for all students. Academic enhancement goes hand-in-hand with professional enhancement. As students progress through college, they will be able to use the SSC resources to help them achieve academic goals. The SSC will offer tutoring for a majority of classes and subjects, allowing students to supplement their classroom experience with personalized assistance and guidance from peer tutors. Students will also be able to use state-of-the-art education software to enhance their learning experience and assist them when working individually and in groups. In addition the SSC will house specific centers for writing and math excellence, with dedicated, highly qualified tutors who can help students at all levels, in both one-on-one and group settings. Since writing and math skills are integral to students’ success in their careers and lives, the SSC is dedicated to providing QU students with every opportunity to enhance these skills. In addition to getting professional and academic support, students will be able to tap the SSC resources for personal enhancement. Through one-on-one meetings, students will learn skills, like time management, study, and communication—especially with professors or supervisors, which will be vital to their success in college and continued success after graduation. QU junior Rosa Krone says, “I feel like the Professional and Academic Enhancement Centers go hand-in-hand, and it’s a good thing that they’re together, because they’re both for the betterment of your future career.” In consolidating and expanding services offered to students, the SSC will enhance students’ time at QU and help to prepare them for their careers and lives after college. Following in the traditions of Franciscan values and liberal arts education, the SSC will help to open students to new experiences and challenge them to strive toward excellence. www.quincy.edu

60s | PROFILE Ken Nesbit ’63 Though Ken Nesbit didn’t attend college directly out of high school, it quickly became apparent that in order to be considered for various promotions, he would have to earn his college degree. Quincy proved to be the answer. “My education at Quincy provided me the accounting skills to pass the certified public accounting exam and allowed me to own a successful public accounting practice and work with successful clients,” Nesbit says. With positive influences of Fr. Melvin Grunloh and Ronin Hartke, among others, Nesbit powered through, graduating in just five semesters, and began his professional career. “I could not have achieved the success I’ve enjoyed without their inspiration and guidance,” Nesbit says. Nesbit spent the next forty years as a partner with Gray Hunter Stenn accounting firm in Quincy where he worked with clients on tax planning and assisted in company acquisitions and mergers. In addition, he gave back to the Quincy University community by serving as a visiting professor of finance for thirteen years as well as a member of the Board of Trustees for three full terms. Both his wife, Rose Mary, and son, Kirk, are Quincy alumni (classes of 1973 and 1983 respectively). Kirk lives in South Carolina where he is the vice president of a Fortune 250 company. “I am a very proud husband, father, and grandfather and I have wonderful support from my entire family,” Nesbit says. Nesbit lives in Quincy where, in his free time, he enjoys socializing with friends and following the stock market.

80s | PROFILE Tim Walsh ’84 Thinking back to his first business course at Quincy, Tim Walsh recalls two words etched on the blackboard by Professor Richard Magliari: “credit” and “credibility.” “In order to be successful, you must have both,” Walsh recalls. Pursuing both of these attributes throughout his professional career, Walsh is currently the owner/broker of Walsh Financial Services and Classic Reality—a residential and commercial real estate brokerage and residential lender brokerage he started in 1990. “One ingredient I always live by is to put your clients’ needs and concerns first,” Walsh explains, noting that, in 2006, there were over 1,500 mortgage brokerages in San Diego as opposed to less than seventy-five today. Walsh, a lifelong Californian, considered Quincy a second home during his college years because travel to the west coast was not always feasible. “Coming from San Diego, I was not able to go home most holidays,” Walsh says. “I have fond memories [of Quincy] especially during the different holidays being welcomed in so many different homes. I have established lifelong friendships from Quincy.” Walsh enjoys playing golf and traveling the world. Since graduating from Quincy in 1984, Walsh has visited over fifteen different countries. He lives in Encinitas, California, with Kelli, his wife of twenty-seven years. Together, they have two sons: Patrick and Matt, ages twenty-four and fifteen, respectively.

00s | PROFILE Mallory Littlejohn ’08 Since first setting foot on Quincy University’s campus as a freshman in 2004, Mallory Littlejohn dreamed of becoming a lawyer. Throughout her college career, Mallory was a model student and upstanding representative of the university. Among her many extracurricular endeavors, Mallory served as a decorated member of QU’s award-winning Mock Trial team and led her fellow students as an executive member, and eventual president, of Quincy University’s Student Senate. After she earned her degree in political science in 2008, Mallory enrolled at John Marshall Law School where she earned a juris doctor in 2012. In October of that year, she accepted her current position as an attorney at Land of Lincoln Legal Assistance Foundation in Champaign, Illinois, where she assists clients with consumer issues. They encouraged my goals and in their own way helped to facilitate them.” Mallory currently lives in Urbana, Illinois, where, in her free time, she enjoys reading and exercising.

Otherwise, it would be a dull world for us to live in...

S

haring his talents and wisdom with thousands of students over the course of nearly half a century of service to the Quincy University art department, Bob Mejer’s undeniable influence has, until now, been—dare we say—“abstract.” It is now far more tangible.

College campus for the first time to work alongside Fr. Tom in the relatively new, yet thriving, art department. After Fr. Tom, Mejer became just the second full-time professor of art.

During a May 3 ceremony inside the Connie Niemann Center for Music, Mejer unveiled a trilogy of watercolor pieces to be permanently installed inside the new facility. The pieces are the first Mejer artworks to be commissioned and permanently displayed on the Quincy University campus.

Though Fr. Tom passed away in 1994, his legacy continues to enhance the campus by way of his many artistic contributions; from the artwork within the historic chapel to the iconic design of “Windows to the Future” to the stained glass of what is now the Connie Niemann Center. The latter served as Mejer’s inspiration for the new commissioned pieces.

Combining concepts of the Trinity and other religious themes, Mejer’s work is actually that of a three-part series, or “triptych,” designed specifically for the Connie Niemann Center’s atrium. It is joined by various pieces by Fr. Tom Brown, longtime professor and founder of the university’s art program. “I am pleased to have my work hanging alongside that of my former colleague and mentor, Fr. Tom,” Mejer said. “It was with God’s blessing that I should inherit the leadership of the art department and continue to have it grow over these many years.” In 1968, Mejer, a twenty-three-year-old artist out of South Bend, Indiana, arrived on the Quincy

In a small way, I hope that [my artwork] embellishes the music and retreat experience for those that work or attend events in the new Connie Niemann Center for Music. — Bob Mejer

“Both his windows and my paintings enjoy the use of light as it brings out the nature of color. Light is color and life,” Mejer said. “Otherwise it would be a dull world for us to live in.” Michael ’72 and Carole Hughes Hennessy ’73 were also honored attendees at the dedication. Their generosity made the evening’s ceremony possible. Carole, an accomplished and awardwinning artist herself, is quick to cite Mejer as a key influence in her own career. In her college years, she pursued an art degree and took several of Mejer’s classes. She worked for many years as an art teacher at the elementary and high school

levels and owned and operated a custom framing business. “He [Mejer] has been an inspiration, a generous artist, and a friend for many years. I’ve always been able to go to Bob for advice and watercolor discussions. He’s always willing to share ideas and technique,” Carole said. “Even now, I can take a body of work and ask him to critique it. And I’ll come back with new perspectives and ideas.” Located at 18th street and Seminary Road on Quincy University’s North Campus, the Connie Niemann Center for Music opened in 2013, thanks in large part to a $1 million donation from Rich ‘53 and Connie Niemann ’54 and the Niemann Foods Foundation. It is the home for QU’s band and choir performances as well as many other musical and nonmusical events throughout the year.

Michael Berndt '10 I give a little back to QU each year because of what the school means to me. It’s that simple. This year I supported one of the endowed scholarship funds that made it possible for me to attend Quincy University.

I know that every gift matters because I was once a student phonathon caller. Even small contributions are powerful when you consider the impact of many alumni giving. Now it is my turn to give back. Although my contributions are small today, I want to do my part so my school continues

to thrive. Support the QU Fund today. www.quincy.edu/support-qu Your gift—large or small—matters.

QUINCY UNIVERSITY HONOR ROLL OF DONORS

T

hanks to the generosity of our alumni, friends, employees, parents, businesses, foundations, trusts, and others, we reached a record high $1,037,208 in gifts to the QU Fund—investments that support the university’s greatest needs and endowment. Total giving to the University, which included restricted and estate gifts,

exceeded $4.2 million for the year. Special thanks go to Fund Chairs Mark ‘75 and Kate (Orlet ‘76) Schuering, Board of Trustees members and our dedicated volunteers for achieving these significant accomplishments. The student speaker at this year’s Scholarship Luncheon, Alexandria Melching ’14, opened with the following quote by Benjamin Franklin—“An investment in knowledge pays the best interest.” Her life has proven just this. When Alexandria was a sophomore in college, her life took an unforeseen turn and she quickly learned that life doesn’t necessarily go as planned. “I never planned on my mom getting sick,” said Melching. “I never planned on her losing her job. I never planned on my family losing our house. I never planned I’d have to leave school to come home to help support my parents, take care of my mom, and younger sister. Completing my college degree and having a good job I loved seemed impossible.” Alexandria’s dream became reality at Quincy University. “Scholarships have given me the chance at an education I thought was out of my reach,” Melching said. “While it’s been rough trying to figure out a new ‘plan’ involving classes and balancing two, sometimes three jobs, I’m so blessed to have learned so much these past two years. I have been given the gift of education, and alongside of it, the gift of kindness.” Thank you for helping make the impossible possible for 98 percent of QU students who, like Alexandria, received financial assistance this year. With gratitude,

Julie Bell Vice President for University Advancement
