Historical society breaks ground for heritage barn

BY DAVE BURGESS qvpreditgor@gmail.com A groundbreaking event held Monday by the Quincy Valley Historical Society & Museum signaled confidence in its plans for an additional building at the Reiman-Simmons House heritage site, despite an important grant still being uncertain.

The Community Heritage Barn planned for the site, at 415 F St. SW, Quincy, was No. 18 on the list of 35 projects approved by the Heritage Capital Projects Fund. At No. 18, the Quincy project’s grant request had a solid ranking and stood a very good chance to get funded by the Washington Legislature.

In spring this year, Harriet Weber, a volunteer with the Quincy Valley Historical Society & Museum and the project manager for the Com-

munity Heritage Barn, was frustrated with the Legislature. The grant was in doubt.

Without knowing the fate of the $205,000 grant application, the Quincy Valley Historical Society & Museum board decided to go ahead and start construction based on the funds it had raised.

Weber said the project has been boosted by a large donation from the Webb & Millie Jones Charitable Trust. Other large donors included someone under the name Anonymous Donor, the city of Quincy, and various business, farm and personal donations – all of them, Weber said, will be listed in the months to come.

In mid-August, the Legislature had still not passed a capital budget, but all 35 projects on the Heritage Capital Projects Fund list were slated for funding in both versions of the capital budget, the House ver-

The Quincy Valley Historical Society & Museum is recording oral histories and seeks local folks to tell their stories. One’s life story does not need to be as exciting as a Hollywood movie plot to be of interest to the historical society, said Harriet Weber. There has been a need for space at the site for some time – a large room for larger gatherings and a space for the historical society’s archives.

The barn will also create a space for exhibits about local agricultural history, and the society has hired a professional designer from Gig

Harbor to help create the exhibits. Weber said Quincy has a lot to share with people in telling the story of how they get their food and to inspire local youngsters to take pride in their home area.

One thing the new exhibit space will not focus on is antique farm machinery.

“We’re trying to tell the story of the farmer and farmworker,” she said.

Keeping people alive, Lifenet teams up with local family

BY SEBASTIAN MORAGA qvprsports@gmail.com The issue of tissue returns to the forefront this September in Quincy.

Tissue donation has grown steadily over the past few decades, and a steady push to increase awareness of the need for donors has also reached the Basin.

Levi Anderson, general manager for Northwest Operations for Lifenet, said the need for tissue donation runs a broad gamut, which includes burn victims, heart valve replacements and torn ligaments.

“There are hundreds of ways in which patients can benefit from implants derived from tissue donations,” Anderson said.

Tissue donation and transplantation are growing, but the need is still greater than the number of grafts provided, given that some of them are age-specific.

On the other hand, tissue donation requirements tend to be more flexible than, for example, kidney donations, which require a very specific match.

Tissue donation has a strong connection to the Quincy area, where Kathleen Horning, mother of Ben Horning, has taken up the cause of creating awareness.

For the fifth year, a run event, Beat the Beast, in memory of Ben – who died in 2012 after he was hit by a car while running alongside a highway – will take place at Farmer-Consumer Awareness Day, in support of awareness of tissue donation. The event will be split into three different runs: 2k, 5k and 10k.

The run does not make much money, Horning said, estimating it raises about $7,000, but the main focus of the run and the LifeNet booth at FCAD is to create awareness.

“It’s been great,” she said of her time at FCAD during the five years of the run and the booth. “It’s given us the opportunity to keep our son alive, and some pretty miraculous things happen through Lifenet, and he has been a part of that. It’s been an honor.”

One such miracle occurred when she got a letter in the mail from one of the recipients of tissue from Ben’s body.

Getting the letter was great, she said, adding that her family is not really interested in meeting the recipient.

“That’s a tough one for us,” she said.

Hard days aside, she said the work raising awareness has been one of appreciation.

The contact between LifeNet and the Hornings began hours after Ben died, to find out if

the family would be willing to be a part of this.

“It touched my heart, the way they did it,” Kathleen Horning said. “Immediately, he was made important by people that we didn’t even know.”

Anderson said part of the mission of Lifenet is to help people through the grieving process.

“At no time do we want them to feel like it’s a transaction,” he said. “We want to support them through the grief process and provide the community with as much education as we can.”

Since those dark days of 2012, Horning’s goal has been to make sure people know this is an important issue. At the same time, it makes a big difference to her to know that her son is still helping people.

“It’s just a fantastic program with fantastic people,” she said of Lifenet.

Anderson said Lifenet started after its founder saw the need for tissue transplants among the naval community in the Norfolk, Va., area. The company has grown to the point that in 2016 alone, thousands of people in the Pacific Northwest received tissue implants, Anderson said.

It is important, he said, for people to learn that age or athleticism or physical condi-

tion aren’t big factors when it comes to donating tissue.

“More and more people every year are able to donate and provide valuable (tissue) to people in need,” he said. “We don’t want folks to self-diagnose and think they would not be a good potential tissue do-

Monument Hill Fire leaves destruction

BY DAVE BURGESS qvpreditor@gmail.com Chuck and Debbie Watson left their home on Road J.8 NW before they were told to leave. They could see a wildfire at the top of the hill north of their home, still some distance away, and decided to get out.

They drove down the gravel lane to Road 13 NW, stopped, watched and about 15 minutes later, an evacuation notice went out to everyone in the area of scattered homes as wind blew the Monument Hill Fire swiftly down the grass and brush slope toward them.

“It was an inferno,” said Debbie Watson. “We saw it all.”

“I don’t know how it came over the hill,” said Chuck Watson.

She and Chuck on Tuesday recalled seeing walls of flame, sometimes 30-feet high. Debbie Watson said it was amazing how fast the fire came down the hill and engulfed their property.

They drove on to the firefighting command center on Adams Road and watched, while most of their neighbors went to hotels, they said.

Local response

Grant County Fire District 3 was the first to respond to the wildfire, and local firefighters were out all night fighting the blaze about 6 miles northeast of Quincy. Fire crews from neighboring counties came to help, and then crews from as far away as Gig Harbor and Spokane.

At about 4 a.m. Thursday, a firefighter escorted Debbie and Chuck Watson back to their home.

Power lines and poles were down. Without electricity in the area, they couldn’t see in the darkness, couldn’t see whether their home was still there.

“We thought we lost our house,” she said.

It was still there. And they are very thankful.

They had a generator, so they were able to save their food. However, there was no running water, and it wasn’t restored for two days. At sunrise, they got a better look at the damage outside.

The fire had burned all the way around their home, but firefighters must have kept the flames off the home and the wraparound deck. Plantings right below their deck burned.

Support posts for the deck burned, and the base of a stair railing was charred. The fire could not have gotten any closer without burning their home.

They lost a kennel and garden tools to the flames. A shed was also reduced to ashes, as was a camper.

The blaze was still burning in other areas Thursday. State firefighting resources arrived and relieved local crews at 11 a.m. or noon, according to Don Fortier, chief of GCFD3.

The number of firefighting personnel on the scene reached about 120, and helicopters and airplanes helped. The size of the fire was estimated at 5,000 acres Thursday afternoon and containment at 40 percent.

Twenty-five homes had been under Level 3 evacuation notices Wednesday night, and the American Red Cross had set up a shelter at Quincy High School, but by Thursday evening it was no longer needed, according to Hill.

Full containment was announced Saturday. The area burned was 6,255 acres, or

about 9.8 square miles. All of the affected area is within District 3, Fortier said.

Three homes leveled

Losses from the fire include three homes, outbuildings, vehicles, farm equipment, fencing and power poles.

Rodney Christian’s home at 10970 Road 13 NW was destroyed. He lived there with his son and said Tuesday they have friends helping them with their immediate needs. Christian had a Subaru car in the driveway, and it was destroyed, as was a steel shipping container used for storage. The container struck a ghostly shape in the blackened scene.

The owners of the home at the end of the lane could not be reached by the Post-Register.

It was unclear whether the other home, a mobile home across the road and south a bit, had been occupied at the time of the wildfire.

Reflecting on the Monument Hill Fire, Fortier said his crew saved a lot of homes, but unfortunately some were lost.

“It was a tough fire, it was a fast-moving, wind-driven fire.

I am pretty proud of what they were able to accomplish that night,” he said. “We had good support from our mutual aid partners all over the county, and from Chelan and Douglas counties.”

There was a report of one firefighter, not GCFD3 personnel, hurt due to a bee sting that caused a reaction. No other injuries were reported.

District 3 lost one firetruck, the 1997 Emergency 1 fire engine, in the blaze. It was unclear Tuesday how it happened.

“We are still looking into it all, but it looked like they got overran by the fire,” Fortier said.

It is a significant loss – about $180,000 for the engine, plus equipment, he said.

The district is working with its insurance company on the loss now, and a reserve engine has been put in place of the destroyed engine.

Grateful for their home

Chuck Watson is still marveling at what wildfires can do.

“I didn’t realize there was so much fuel in this grass,” he said, adding later, “these grass fires are very dangerous.”

This is the closest to the house that any wildfire has burned – they usually stop a mile away, she said. She was especially grateful for the many firefighters who came from distant parts of the state.

They both expressed deep gratitude for the firefighters who saved their home. The firefighters checked on them, made sure they had food and water, and put out smoldering remnants around their home.

“It feels cheap saying just thank you,” Chuck said.

He said he can’t buy steak dinners for all the firefighters who helped, but he’d like to, to show his appreciation.

County emergency management

Grant County Sheriff Tom Jones in a statement released Saturday expressed gratitude for the work of Grant County Fire District 3 and other agencies that came to help fight the Monument Hill Fire. The statement continued: “The Washington State Patrol and Quincy Police Department aided us tremendously by going door-to-door to give evacuation notices to citizens whose homes were in the fire’s path. Their help made the process move so much faster than if we had to do it alone. We appreciate their partnerships.

“This fire was a good test for the sheriff's Emergency Management Division, a new mission assigned to us in January by the Board of Commissioners. All of the sheriff's administrative staff was on the scene, gathered inside the sheriff's mobile command center. Emergency management staff provided a new ‘boots on the ground’ involvement at the incident scene, which aided in situational awareness and resource management.”

The city of Quincy was notified recently that it was named a “Utility of the Future Today” and will receive recognition from a partnership of water reuse organizations at their national conference in Chicago.

“This is important recognition and reflects nearly a decade of dedicated work by many people that helped us plan, design, fund and implement this water reuse utility project. I think it’s been a great team effort, marked by consultation, collaboration and important partnerships,” Quincy City Administrator Tim Snead said in a press release.

According to the WateReuse Association, the recognition program was launched last year by four water sector organizations – the National Association of Clean Water Agencies, the Water Environment Federation, the Water Environment & Reuse Foundation and WateReuse – with input from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the press release said.

Mayor Jim Hemberry provided a statement on the Utility of the Future Today selection: “It’s an honor for the community and very rewarding for the city to be recognized for its innovative water reuse utility that creates a closed loop water reuse system that will, among other beneficial uses, provide a solution to meet the

Quincy is one of 25 winners of this year’s Utility of the Future Today. They will be recognized in a ceremony at the Water Environment Federation 2017 Technical Exhibit and Conference in Chicago on Oct. 3. According to Snead, the city is considering sending someone to the conference.

Federation states that the Utility of the Future Today recognition celebrates the achievements of forward-thinking, innovative water utilities that are providing resilient, value-added service to communities, particularly in community engagement, watershed stewardship, and recovery of resources such as water, energy and nutrients. The law of unintended consequences

ave you ever done something only to find that your actions caused you unforeseen and unexpected grief? We humans are decision-making creatures. Welcome to the law of unintended consequences.

We all have experienced it. The military and our media have named the effect “collateral damage.”

Psychologist and author Stuart Vyse’s article entitled “Can Anything Save Us from Unintended Consequences?” in the April 9, 2017, edition of the Skeptical Inquirer relates examples that illustrate this very human tendency, along with some remedies.

One major example comes from the Great Recession of 2008, which was a result of complex financial, governmental and personal decisions.

Banks played a major part. In the 1990s, bankers were frustrated by the

Rich Elfers Columnist rising rate of personal bankruptcies, so they spent $40 million in campaign contributions and millions more in lobbying Congress to get a bill passed to stiffen bankruptcy laws. It took until 2005 to get a law passed and signed by the president.

One of the major provisions of the

Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act (BAPCPA) was to increase up-front costs of filing for bankruptcy and thus make the whole process more burdensome. A few years later, these tougher laws helped to cause the 2008 crash.

Once the law went into effect, many people who were struggling with debt found that declaring bankruptcy was no longer an option. In reaction to this reality, many debtors solved their dilemma by not paying their bills, especially their mortgages. Foreclosures replaced bankruptcies for many.

These “toxic assets” were bundled and sold all over the world.

When the value of these mortgage-backed securities began to plummet, it pulled down the stock market, the employment rate, and the economy with it. Had these indebted borrowers been able to declare bank-

ruptcy, rather than have their homes foreclosed on, many could have saved their homes.

Bankers had tried to increase their profits, but the law of unintended consequences kicked in instead. U.S. banks are thought to have lost $500 billion in the 2008 Great Recession, according to Vyse.

There are many other examples, including the 1961 Bay of Pigs invasion, which nearly led to nuclear war during the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962. The U.S. invasions of Iraq, and later Afghanistan, have resulted in political and military quagmires after early victories.

Letter to the Editor Lybbert for mayor Knowing Scott Lybbert since I was a kid on the farm, he has devoted himself to Quincy with new ideas. Currently, working with Scott at Lamb Weston, his continued passion for improving our continuous improvement programs in maintenance and production has spread throughout all of Lamb Weston.

His experience with being on the city council and involvement with the community over the years makes Scott the right man for the job. Passion, experience and dedication!

Vyse offers some advice to avoid unintended consequences that we and our president should carefully consider: • Try to adopt an outsider’s perspective on the question.

• Deliberately consider the opposite of the decision you are about to make.

• Encourage substantive debate on the knowledgeable proponents of all points of view.

• Spin more than one hypothesis.

• Try not to get overly attached to a hypothesis just because it’s yours.

• If there’s a chain of argument, every link in the chain must work (including the premise) – not just most of them.

As part of this approach, we must, as Stephen Covey propounded, “Plan with the end in mind.” Thinking longterm is far more important than satisfying one’s ego and vanity in the short-term. Wisdom and forbearance trump “flying by the seat of your pants” on almost every occasion.

Humility, patience and a desire to make better decisions must be part of the decision-making process. Anything short of these can spell disaster as we are entangled in the web of the law of unintended consequences.

Let’s hope our president and his advisers are thinking clearly to resolve the brewing crisis on the Korean peninsula. Washington drivers likely to feel the pinch for funding highways

n 2014, President Barrack Obama opened the door for states to collect tolls on interstate highways.

This year Oregon lawmakers, much to the chagrin of Washington drivers and truckers, unilaterally took advantage of the new funding opportunity.

Before adjourning in July, Oregon’s legislature passed an ambitious $5.3 billion comprehensive transportation plan. To fund it, legislators raised fuel taxes, increased registration and title fees, created a new payroll tax, added taxes on auto and bicycle sales, and placed tolls on Portland metro area highways, including interstates.

Under the new law, Oregon’s Department of Transportation will begin planning tolling stations on Interstate 5 and Interstate 205 between the state line and Wilsonville. The department will need federal approval, and that likely will be a fight.

The plan was that Oregon and Washington would collectively toll I-5 to fund a new bridge, just as they did in 1917 and 1958, when the existing bridges were built. Federal gas taxes, which funded 90 percent of the I-205 bridge ($177 million), are no longer available.

The Columbian newspaper editorialized that “about 65,000 people traverse the state line each day to work in the Portland area, meaning they would pay tolls while coming and going. These are people, mind you, who already pay income tax to Oregon despite not living there.”

So, what’s behind the surge in tolling?

The problem for states is the federal government isn’t providing the bulk of interstate funding as it did a half-century ago. With our massive federal debt, U.S. lawmakers can’t afford to transfer money from the general fund.

The federal gas tax has been stuck at 18 cents a gallon since 1993.

Meanwhile, Washington’s gas tax is 55.9 cents per gallon. Oregon stands at 49 cents, but it will incrementally increase by 10 cents over the next eight years. (Diesel taxes are even higher).

Meanwhile, road construction costs are up by 335 percent since the turn of the century and traffic congestion worsens.

Aug. 26, 2010 AAU program coming to Quincy Augustine Pedregon wants to revive the youth sports program in Quincy The Quincy native has worked with Wenatchee’s Amateur Athletic Union and high school basketball programs for the past several years, and now he has returned home with the hopes of starting an AAU hoops program in the fall.

Pedregon spoke to the Quincy School District board of directors at their Tuesday meetings about

his plans.

“There’s a huge opportunity here,” he said. “I’ve seen it work in Wenatchee and it can work here as well.”

The program would be for boys and girls in the third through eighth grades.

Carmakers are betting heavily on electric vehicles. One reason is Great Britain, India, France and Norway announced plans to completely ditch gas and diesel cars starting as early as 2025 (Norway).

Volvo is already phasing out internal combustion engines, while Toyota, the world’s second largest auto manufacturer, has developed a new lithium-ion battery that slashes charging times, is more compact and extends driving distances. Toyota hopes to introduce it in 2022 models.

Traffic jams are costly.

American Transportation Research Institute said increased congestion-related costs added approximately $49.6 billion to the trucking industry. This lost productivity is equivalent to 264,781 commercial truck drivers sitting idle for an entire working year.

The bottom line is drivers are likely to see more tolling. There are more cars on the road, construction and maintenance costs are escalating, and fuel tax collections are insufficient.

However, future tolling proposals need to be better planned, coordinated and more equitable. Fairness must be a guide post.  Don C. Brunell is a business analyst, writer and columnist. Pedregon said the program will work as a feeder system into the high school teams.

“I’ve talked to Wade Petersen and Cully Donovan, and they are going to give us things for the kids to learn,” he said. “To teach the kids the fundamentals before they reach that age is huge. We’ve been walking onto the court for the first time, and other teams already have 200 games under their belts.”

New dual vice principal has ties to Quincy area

BY SEBASTIAN MORAGA qvprsports@gmail.com The daughter of a former Quincy alum and teacher, Tiffany Viall returns to a place she feels like she knows.

Viall (pronounced Vi-AL) is the new dual vice principal at two of Quincy’s elementary schools, Mountain View and Pioneer. The announcement was made the first week in August.

The position will last for two years, until schools are realigned in 2019.

Viall, an instructional coach in the Wenatchee School District for 11 years who just earned her master’s degree in educational administration from Washington State University, said that although she had been applying for two positions – the Quincy one and another one in her district – Quincy was her first choice.

“They can expect a positive energy, a servant leader to help support them in whatever they need – classroom management, instruction, what they are needing to be successful in their classroom,” she said, when asked what the teachers at both schools may expect of her.

After more than a decade at the job in Wenatchee, Viall said she knew last year she was ready to move on.

In addition, she likes the small-community feel of Quincy, and has “heard wonderful things” about the district from people all around the state. Viall also had applied for the position of Monument Elementary principal in March.

“I heard it was a very progressive district, moving in the right direction to help students and staff members prepare for the 21st century,” she said, praising the community’s support of the schools at the ballot box.

In addition to Wenatchee, Viall has taught in the Bay Area and Federal Way. When asked how teaching and coaching grownups had prepared her for a two-year stint at a job involving children, she said, “Beautifully. I was stationed at an elementary school for four days a week, it was really my home; I was

interacting with teachers and students K-5, on a daily basis; and I had a two-year-long internship where I was the righthand-man of my principal, so to speak.”

This job, she said, marries perfectly with her experience, particularly in the area of Positive Behavior Interventions and Support (PBIS.) Viall said there will be job opportunities in the district after her two years as dual VP are up, so she’s not worried.

“I’m excited to be here,” she said, later adding, “I’m not reinventing the wheel. I’m there to support the principals and their visions for the school.”

Her grandparents lived here, her father taught at Quincy Junior High School, and she says she has plenty of memories of traveling to Quincy to visit family.

Now she will travel to Quincy every day, commuting from Wenatchee, and she can’t wait.

A successful time as dual VP would entail developing strong relationships at all levels in the schools, she said.

“What is needed is to have administration and leadership that fully support students and teachers,” she said.

“From what I know of Colleen (Frerks, principal at Pioneer) and Alesha (Porter, first-year principal at Mountain View), they are going to be great administrators and great leaders.”

Yakima Symphony conductor looks back at three concerts under the sun

For three concerts this summer, the Yakima Symphony Orchestra, of which Golan is the conductor, performed shows at a brand new facility in George, the Cave B Summer Music Theater.

The stage, built with Golan’s specifications in mind, was better than his home turf, Yakima’s venerable Capitol Theater, he said.

“The stage is fantastic,” he said. “We play a beautiful concert hall from the audience’s perspective,” but it’s smaller. The Capitol was built for vaudeville and does not have the depth some classical music pieces require. Sometimes, part of the orchestra has to sit on the wings of the stage at the Capitol The depth of the stage at Cave B may make it possible to add a choir to future performances, as well, he said.

“Few things are better than sitting outside listening to music on a beautiful night with a beautiful view,” he said.

Two years after fires snuffed out summer, renaissance is complete for Lake Chelan

BY SEBASTIAN MORAGA qvprsports@gmail.com To Mike Cooney, the answer is simple: We will never forget, he says.

The date was Aug. 15, the year was 2015, and the images were indelible. Lake Chelan, one of the top vacation spots in Central Washington, lost half of its summer season to wildfires and smoke.

The sight of tourists splashing on the lake was replaced by the sight of tankers flying overhead and spraying neighborhoods in Chelan with fire retardant.

Instead of watching sand castles grow, people watched homes and fruit packing sheds torn to pieces from the heat and the flames. Events like high school reunions had to happen in the dark because the town had no electricity.

It’s been two years, almost to the day, but Chelan is back up on its feet again, says Cooney, owner of the downtown coffee shop The Vogue and the city’s mayor since December of that year.

“We have come back very strong,” he said. “In a way, we have all moved on, all who owned shops downtown.

As soon as the fires cleared around Labor Day of ‘15, people started coming over.”

What followed was an intense campaign to let people know that Chelan was ailing, but open for visitors.

“We all have our own individual stories about how people were coming to town to spend money and help us rebound,” Cooney said.

The result of that, Cooney said, is that Chelan downtown remains vibrant.

“I don’t think there’s one vacancy downtown right now,” he said. “Lots of people are looking for commercial storefronts in Chelan and they keep striking out.”

Shops like Cooney’s are enjoying “our strongest summer in 13 years,” he said, despite two weeks of Canadian smoke filling the skies.

Despite its reputation as a posh spot, Lake Chelan has something to offer everybody, says Cooney.

“We have everything from tent camping, vacation rentals, lodges, and hotels,” he said. “As far as travel goes, it’s a heck of a great place.”

Prices run the gamut, he says, from $35 in a campground to $300 per night on one of the swankier resorts at the edge of the water.

Traffic can be tricky, with empty spots rare to find, he said, but the city is working on it to improve vehicular flow. Traffic is also heavy on the lake, with more boats and jetskis than usual, he added.

What people perhaps don’t know, Cooney added, is that Chelan is slowly becoming a year-round destination, which was not the case in the ear-

ly part of the 2000s. Events like Winterfest, which closes down the entirety of the town’s main street downtown, are attracting more and more tourist during the colder months.

Chelan in the winter and fall is not the boomtown it is when the sun is out, but it’s more popular than it was.

Summer, of course, still runs the show.

With two city-owned parks with swimming areas on the lake’s shore -Don Morse Park and Lakeside Park, the popularity of the lake, one of the deepest in the nation, remains unparalleled.

“The parks are full to the brim every weekend,” he said. “We try hard as a city to provide public access to the lake.”

Quick Southern-Style Baked Beans DIRECTIONS |SERVES 18

INGREDIENTS • 8 slices bacon, halved • 1 medium onion, cut into small dices • 1/2 medium green pepper, cut into small dices • 3 large cans (28 oz. each) pork & beans • 3/4 cup BBQ sauce • 1/2 cup brown sugar • 1/4 cup distilled or cider vinegar • 2 teaspoons dry mustard or 2 tablespoons Dijon

Adjust oven rack to lower-middle position and heat oven to 325 degrees. Fry bacon in large, deep sauté pan skillet until bacon has partially cooked and released about 1/4 cup drippings. Remove bacon from pan and drain on paper towels. Add onions and peppers to drippings in pan and sauté until tender, about 5 minutes. Add beans and remaining ingredients bring to a simmer. (If skillet is not large enough, add beans and heat to a simmer then transfer to a large bowl and stir in remaining ingredients). Pour flavored beans into a greased 13-by 9-inch (or similar size) ovenproof pan. Top with bacon, then bake until beans are bubbly and sauce is the consistency of pancake syrup, about 2 hours. Hallstrom to speak before mission service

Ethan Hallstrom, son of Chad and Stephanie Erickson, will be serving a 2-year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, in the Arizona Scottsdale Mission.

Hallstrom will speak at Ethan 9:30 a.m., Hallstrom S u n d a y, Aug. 27, in the LDS Church, 1101 Second Ave. SE, Quincy. All are invited to come listen to him speak. He will leave for his mission Aug. 30.

Seniors: Serving meatloaf

Last week’s game winners were: Rummikub – Glenn Barrow and Ruth Minor; pinochle – Judy Todd and Jo Kniep; dominoes – Mark Owens and Dan Neumann; and bridge – Bea Weinand and Barb Kennedy.

Rotary lunch and senior dinner are meatloaf, mashed potatoes and gravy, corn on the cob, green salad and carrot cake with cream cheese icing. Dinner is served at 6 p.m.

Prices are $7 for members, $8 for nonmembers over age 50, and $9 for under age 50.

Monday is Monte Cristo, broccoli salad or Italian veggie soup and lemon bar. Tuesday is Western omelet casserole, cinnamon roll, fresh fruit or ham sandwich, fresh fruit and cookie surprise.

Wednesday is grilled ham and cheese, tomato soup or corn/ tomato salad and snickerdoodle. Lunch is served at 11:30 a.m. Prices are $5 for members, $6 for nonmembers age 50 and over, $7 for under age 50, with a $1 charge for to-go orders. Senior citizens may have lunches delivered Monday through Thursday inside Quincy city limits for an additional $2 – call 787-3231.

Weekly activities include Monday - TOPS at 4 p.m.; Tuesday - coffee hour at 10 a.m. and SAIL class at 2 p.m.; Wednesday - bridge at 12:30 p.m., Chat and Stitch at 1 p.m.; Thursday – SAIL class at 2 p.m., dinner at 6 p.m., followed by games at 6:30 p.m.

The Quincy Police Department will present a town hall meeting at the Quincy Community Center on Wednesday, Aug. 30, 5:30-7:30 p.m.

Helicopter rides will return to FCAD

Farmer-Consumer Awareness Day on Sept. 9 will once again offer helicopter rides from Flying M Air of East Wenatchee. The cost is $40 per person for a 10-minute ride. A minimum of two people can ride at a time with a maximum of three people.

Thinking about gardening smarter, not harder

BY MONA KAISER WSU Grant-Adams Master Gardener This is the time of year that most of us are thinking about a break from our gardening tasks. As much as we love gardening and the aspects of being outdoors, we’re realizing we need to develop easier ways of doing the gardening tasks in our landscape; this could be called adaptive gardening.

I’ll list some ways to make

gardening easier. Some of these ideas have been suggested for the elderly or those with a physical handicap, but they will work for all ages.

• Before you start your gardening tasks, do stretches to warm up muscles.

• Work outdoors during the cool of the day.

• Avoid working in the same position or doing the same activity for long periods of time. Switch tasks every 30 minutes or so and take a 15 minute break every

hour. Taking periodic stretch breaks can also ease tension and reduce stiffness.

• Choose the right tool for the job.

• Use ergonomic tools.

• Keep pruners sharp to make cutting easier.

• Use a pulley system for hanging baskets, which reduces the weight of the basket by half and allows it to be pulled down for watering and planting.

• If possible, have garden and tools close to the house so you don’t have to walk far.

• Use a cart with wheels to transport your garden tools and plants in one trip.

• Use low-maintenance plants that require less care, such as perennials instead of annuals.

• Garden vertically. Grow climbing and rambling plants such as cucumbers and

squash on trellises and other support structures that allow the gardener to tend plants without all the stooping and bending.

• Buy a click seeder, seed tape or pelletized seed for ease of handling and planting.

• Pick the smallest watering can for your abilities; for instance, a 1- or 2-gallon instead of the usual 3-gallon size.

• Sit on a bucket or use a stool to avoid constant stooping or squatting.

• Buy a kneeler with handles that will help you get up.

There are some versions that can be turned over and used as a seat.

As you develop an adaptive gardening plan that suits you, consider installing raised beds. Dimensions may vary for a male versus a fe-

male gardener.

Consider the gardener’s future need of a walker or wheelchair when designing the raised bed layout. Raised bed kits are available at some farm and garden or other retail stores. A WSU Extension publication, “Raised Beds – Will They Benefit Your Vegetable Garden?” (FS075E), provides guidance with material selection, spacing and recommended dimensions.

WEDDING Yeates - Crowther

Katelin Jill Crowther of Richfield, Utah, and Brett Evert Yeates, of Quincy, were married Aug. 11, 2017, in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Manti Temple in Manti, Utah.

Katelin is the daughter of Brian and Sharmi Crowther, of Richfield, Utah. She is a 2014 graduate of Richfield High School and is currently attending BYU-Idaho, studying Recreational Therapy in Rexburg, Idaho.

Brett Evert Yeates is the son of Carl and Mickie Yeates, of Quincy. He is a 2014 graduate of Quincy High School and is attending BYU-Idaho, studying Automotive Mechanical Engineering.

A reception was held in Richfield, Utah, following the wedding, and an open house in Quincy is planned for Aug. 26, 2017, at 7 p.m. at the Yeates’ residence.

Bridal attendants were her cousin Kaycia Barben, Mallory Burge, Marisa Coburn, and Veronica Lockyer.

The groom’s attendants were Trey Petersen, Carter Bushman, Porter Hodges and Darren Hodges.

The couple plan to live in Rexburg, Idaho.

Three-sport athlete Kaeden Murphy heads south

BY SEBASTIAN MORAGA qvprsports@gmail.com Perhaps as a tribute to his chosen career path, Kaeden Murphy engineered quite a farewell on his last game in the Basin.

Murphy, pitching for the team that has been his summer sports home for the past five years, the Columbia Basin River Dogs, pitched a one-hitter through six innings

in the quarterfinal game of the 2017 Babe Ruth World Series, in what would turn out to be the last win of the season for the ‘Dogs.

Seeing Murphy on the mound of a Basin team turned a few heads, as he had been absent from the Quincy Jacks’ baseball roster in 2017 after a mid-year move to Arizona.

“I was basically still a Washington resident then,” he said, explaining his abili-

But with the River Dogs’ season over after a semifinal loss to eventual Babe Ruth World Series champions Mid-County Texas, now Murphy has begun settling in Arizona. Perhaps for good, perhaps not, he says, but at least for the next two years.

Next for the three-sport athlete is finding a junior-college

home for his skills, and getting used to being a one-sport athlete again.

“I’m better at baseball,” he said of his choice of sport.

He later added, “I don’t really like basketball or football.

I played it just to stay active.”

The choice of college is not as clear-cut. Mesa Community College figures among the top three options.

The memories of his time in the Basin run the gamut from

sweet to bitter, with three trips to the Babe Ruth World Series, including an appearance in the championship game in 2016, as a pitcher. The River Dogs lost that game to Alabama.

This year, the team “did a lot better than we were expected to,” he said. An irregular start to the season turned into a Cinderella season of sorts that ended one game shy See Kaeden on page 22

Quincy alum Farias to stay at Big Bend CC

BY SEBASTIAN MORAGA qvprsports@gmail.com In the end, the allure of the beautiful game wasn’t strong enough to lure Johan Farias away from his first love.

The Quincy alum toyed with, but ultimately declined, an invitation to transfer to Skagit Valley Community College to play soccer, choosing instead to return to Big Bend Community College for a second year of college basketball.

In his first year, at BBCC, Farias saw limited playing time on a Viking team that reached the NWAC postseason.

The news of some of his friends choosing Skagit Val-

ley over more nearby schools almost swayed Farias, but after visiting with Skagit Valley coaches and trying out for the soccer team, he decided to stay put.

“I went to Skagit and I went to the tryouts and I made the team and they wanted me to stay,” he said. “But just being there four days, I just wasn’t feeling it, so I’m going to head back to Big Bend and play basketball.”

Homesickness was part of it, Farias said, but a bigger factor was a lack of chemistry between himself and some of the Skagit coaching staff.

“My feeling was, I didn’t really want to play for that coach,” Farias said. “I don’t

want to sound mean or anything, but he just didn’t sound or seem like a winner.”

With buddies and relatives at Skagit, it was not an easy decision for Farias, starting goalkeeper for the 2016 soccer team that finished second at state.

“They knew I was good,” he said of some of the Skagit staff players, “but the coach didn’t really show interest. He was like, ‘Whatever,’ because he already knew me. But the recruiting coach and the assistant coach really wanted me to stay. They were like, ‘We got a basketball team here, too. We can get you a tryout, too.’”

Asked why he didn’t get the same welcoming vibe from the head coach of the soccer team, Farias said that since they knew each other, perhaps the coach felt like he didn’t need to talk to him much.

“He talked to me but it was like, ‘Oh, I know him already.

Workouts for next season at Big Bend start next month, with open gyms and pickup games.

“I’ve been working out a lot this summer, playing a lot,” said Farias, a future policeman. “I have seen myself getting faster, stronger, bigger.”

Saying no to Skagit Valley does not mean Farias is done with soccer.

“I still play a lot on the weekends, in the (regional) Mexican league,” he said. “I don’t know if I want to go anywhere with it, but I still play for fun.

“I love sports,” he said.

“Any time I can get on a team, I’ll get on a team.”

As a Jack, he quarterbacked the team for part of the season in 2016, platooning with Kade Schutzmann. In basketball, a season that started with

a facial injury during a game against Cascade ended with Murphy not seeing any playing time in the last few games, due to his propensity to get technical fouls.

“Me and the coach had a little bit of a dispute, so we just ended up not playing the last four games,” he said.

“I was pretty bummed out, i wanted to play, but it wasn’t supposed to happen,” Murphy

said. “That’s when I moved to Arizona. Not why I moved but when I moved.”

With the Basin in the rearview mirror (he returned to Arizona Aug. 23), the now one-sport athlete says what will sway his decision as to which junior college to choose will be what they offer in terms of education.

“I want to be an engineer,” he said.
