Quincy’s Aquatic Center

The Quincy Valley: Open for business once again

It’s been a long, hard road, filled with postponements, cancellations, closures and their respective share of long faces and last-minute scrambles. But after months, if not years of waiting, our beloved Quincy Valley is ready to welcome you once again, and invites you to discover its beauty, its secrets, its captivating corners and magnificent vistas, its friendly people and superb wines, its new hotspots and longtime traditions. Nestled between thousand-year-old cliffs and the ageless shores of the mighty Columbia, the Quincy Valley offers something for everybody, and we are delighted to offer you a glimpse of all the ways you and your loved ones can have a good time by visiting our community. Within these pages, you will find information on where to bike, hike, swim, sip or fish. Where to learn more about our past, and where to swing a golf club or eat a fine meal. In our calendar of events section, you will also find that the Quincy Valley is open for business year round, not just when the sun is glistening off the river and the fruit is ripe on our many orchards. It is our privilege to open the Valley’s door to you and share with you some of the many reasons why once you come to the Quincy Valley it’s hard to leave and even harder to not come back to it once more. Enjoy, Sebastian Moraga, editor, 2022 Quincy Valley Recreation Guide 2022 • Sunshine and Sights • Quincy Valley Rec Guide

Getting started Here is a great way to put your feet on a trail in Quincy’s Ancient Lakes Story and photos by Dave Burgess

You get close to the volcanic rock outcroppings typical of central Washington. It is important, for your safety to stay on the paths.

First hike, from p. 14 is a vault toilet on the right. It marks a small parking area sometimes used for camping. A vehicle with little ground clearance may be better off parked in the smooth turnaround circling the vault toilet, because there are some jagged rocks in the parking area. The trail starts in the middle of the western side (away from the road) of the parking area. Put one foot in front of the other, take it slow, and watch your step. Stop frequently to take in the scenery and get your bearings. And, stay on the trail. In this rugged terrain, a hiker who has veered off the trail for, say, 20 paces, can look back and not see the trail. Also, know to the south is a cliff about 300 feet away. There are no warning signs or railings. Approaching the destination viewpoint, if hiking with young children, hold their hands. The clifftop view is fantastic: Dusty Lake framed by basalt walls and opening up to the basin beyond. Return to the parking area on the same path. If See First hike, p. 18 16

Beverly bridge opens a path to the past and present Story and photos by Tammara Green, with contributions by the Post-Register staff

Editor’s note: fragments of this story were published in the Quincy Valley Post-Register in April of 2022. The Beverly bridge on Highway 243 opened to the public for foot, horse and bike traffic Friday, April 8. 30

Built in 1909 as part of the expansion of the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul railroad system, the bridge spans 3,000 feet and sits just over 85 feet above the Columbia River, providing for many different views as tourists cross it. The bridge, which has suffered fire

damage to its wooden planks, still stands structurally sound long since the last train crossed it in 1980, according to experts. Last April, roughly 1,000 people attended the dedication ceremony for the bridge, which opened with an introduc-

Come wet a hook in our Valley Just about five miles outside of Quincy, you will find the Quincy Lakes area hosted by Washington State Fish and Wildlife. At the entry to Burke Lake, there is a Boat launch and trails on either side of the lake. In Burke Lake, you will find rainbow trout. The opening day for fishing there is March 1. Evergreen reservoir contains bluegill, bass, crappie and other fish. If neither spot fits your fancy, other lakes in the area are Stan Coffin, Quincy Lake, H Lake and Dusty Lake. Quincy Lake has rainbow trout. Stan Coffin has bass and blue gill. If you are up to a hike, you need to travel down to Dusty Lake. This hike is steep and a little challenging for some, plus, rattlesnakes have been spotted in the area. Dusty Lake has rainbow trout and has German Brown trout. Martha Lake, just north of George, is good early during the summer. The lake is a little shallow and there definitely are some big fish there. Make sure to use bait like worms or crayfish. the first month of the season. After the opener fishing is good to fair. Both boat and shoreline fishing are very effective at Martha Lake”. It is true fishing is not great after May or early June at Martha. The water level goes down and the fish can be a bit muddy

In addition, there are three lakes within the Winchester Wasteway system. Winchester Lake #1: This lake is does not have ADA facilities, nor does it have a restroom. Camping is allowed, 2022 Trout Derby though. Winchester Lake #2 See Fish, p. 35

There is an aging boat launch. Camping is allowed. Overnight camping is allowed at the fishing lakes unless otherwise noted. Of course, remember that fish tend to bite very early in the morning or at sunset and after. Nunnally Lake in South Grant County: Two-pole fishing is allowed here. Quincy and George hold separate egg hunts, giving your children the chance to collect twice as many Easter eggs. Contact the George Community Hall, georgecommunityhall. com for the George hunt, and the Quincy Parks and Rec Department for the Quincy version of the event. Also, you might want to ask around and see if other private businesses in town are hold-

ing their own hunts. Before the pandemic, The Cambridge used to hold one, too. You can never have enough chocwit. MAY Pikeminnow derby

The Northern Pikeminnow derby takes place on the Columbia River from Rock Island Dam to Wanapum Dam. It helps reduce the population of this predator, and it makes for a pretty good time, especially if the weather cooperates. Visit the Quincy Valley Chamber of Commerce’s website for registration dates and fees or call 509-787-

2140. The goal of the derby is to remove as many pikeminnows as possible during the course of a few days. Memorial ceremony

Day

The Memorial Day ceremonies in Quincy include a service and a flag-raising at the Quincy Valley Cemetery (see photo above). For more information, visit www. quincywashington.us.

Looking for an intense in-tents experience? We’ve got you covered The Quincy Lakes area offers public, dry camping with portable toilets. The Quincy Lakes area offers around 20 lakes to visit. To get to the lakes from Quincy, take Highway 281 south five miles to County Road 5 NW. Turn west and drive three miles to Road T Northwest. Turn south on that gravel road. Pro-

ceed south a half mile to the gate at the main entrance of the wildlife area. The east side of the wildlife area can be accessed via Highway 281 from Road 3 Northwest. Grant PUD manages several year-round campgrounds on the Columbia River. Visit Crescent Bar Recreation Area, Priest Rapids

Recreation Area Campground, Sand Hollow Campground, Jackson Creek, Rocky Coulee and Buckshot. Some of these campgrounds have very specific rules, so be sure to visit www. grantpud.org/visit-us to learn more about each spot. Some of these campgrounds may have fees, quiet hours, allow no pets or larger camp-

ers, or have a limit on the number of days you may stay, depending on the time of year. Gorge Amphitheatre Campground, Wildhorse Campground, as well as a variety of camping options are available for visitors to the amphitheater. Go to www.tourgrantcounty. com.

Biking and rock climbing Many of the trails around the Quincy Valley are suitable for off-road bicycles. Road racers can enjoy cycling through Quincy Valley’s variable farmland on the many paved county roads. We advise that you remain alert to passing traffic, given the high number of sizeable vehicles that travel around and across the Valley every day. The Quincy Valley has hundreds of miles of trails for biking, many of which are open year-round. Some of the best trails are found at the Quincy Lakes Wildlife Area, where trails meander through the same landscape that was formed 50

by ancient floodwaters that carved breathtaking vistas and valleys. Its variety of wildflowers and plentiful sunshine make a ride through the Quincy Lakes Wildlife Area a unique experience. Another prime spot for you and your mountain bike is the Nature Conservancy’s property north of Quincy, at the 4,788-acre Beezley Hills Preserve. To reach Beezley Hills Preserve from Quincy, head east on Highway 28. Near the eastern edge of town, turn north on Columbia Way, which curves into Road P NW, also known as Monument Hill Road. Go 7.1 miles

and park next to the access road for a communications tower at the top of the hill. On the south side of the road, there is a gate into the Beezley Hills Preserve. According to the Washington Trails Association, the terrain is best suited for beginners and intermediate bikers. The terrain is easy, but there is no signage. Motorized vehicles are not allowed on the trail, but mountain bikes are OK. Visit www.wta. org for more information and trip reports. You may also visit Trailforks.com. millions of years ago, draw rock climbers year-round. Described by the climbing website Mountain Project (www. mountainproject.com) as “Beginner Central,” The Feathers are climbable on both the north and south ends, allowing for most weather conditions. The Feathers, (elevation; 1,115 feet) are off of Interstate 90 at exit 143. Take the old Highway 10 down toward the Columbia River. The Feathers are adjacent to the first parking and camping area found in the Frenchman Coulee area.
