UV RAYS FOR AIRCRAFT SANITATION Qatar Airways has started using UV technology, which can inactivate viruses and bacteria, on board its aircraft. The system is the size of a food trolley and features extendable UV arms that treat seats, surfaces and cabins without the use of chemical cleaners. So far, the airline has purchased six units, with the intention of acquiring enough to be used in all aircraft turnarounds at Doha’s Hamad International airport. Qatar Airways says it will also continue to disinfect aircraft using products recommended by IATA and the World Health Organization, with the UV system being used “as an additional step after manual disinfection, to ensure the highest standards of cleanliness.”

RAW FISH AND LISTERIA RISK Raw or smoked fish can also be a vehicle for dangerous infections, such as Listeria monocytogenes. The BfR, the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment, recalls this through the publication of a specific document. The starting data show that in 2018 as many as 701 Listeria monocytogenes infections were reported to the Robert Koch Institute, which correspond to 0.8 cases per 100.000 inhabitants. Most of these infections were severe, resulting in endocarditis, meningitis, blood poisoning, with an associated mortality of 5%. While young and healthy people do not usually get seriously ill, risk categories are the elderly, pregnant women, infants and the immunosuppressed. For this reason, the Institute recommends to the most vulnerable categories only fish and shellfish cooked or in any case heated up in the innermost parts to 70°C for at least two minutes, and also suggests to avoid all raw dishes.

HOSPITALS, FLOORS ARE VEHICLES FOR BACTERIA AND VIRUSES An American study shows how hospital room floors can be contaminated with antibiotic-resistant bacteria within hours of a patient’s hospitalization. The test was carried out on rooms occupied by 17 newly hospitalized patients, rooms that were thoroughly sanitized before hosting the patients. Within 24 hours, surfaces belonging to almost half of the rooms tested positive for methicillin-resistant staph. Within 4 days of admission, this pathogen and some resistant enterococci were identified in 58% of the rooms. Contamination often started on floors, but later moved on to patients’ socks, bedding and nearby surfaces. “If the bacteria stayed on the floors that wouldn’t matter, but we are clearly seeing these organisms are instead being transferred to patients despite our control efforts,” said study author Curtis Donskey. “Hand hygiene is key, but we need to develop practical approaches to reduce underestimated sources of pathogens.” In a related study, the author shows similar results regarding the presence of SARS-CoV-2 nucleic acids on the floors and soles of staff shoes in Covid wards.

ISSA PULIRE VERONA RESCHEDULED The event, which was supposed to be held from May 18-20, has been postponed to September 7-9 2021. The decision was taken by the Organisers of the ISSA Pulire exhibition, in order to ensure optimal safety conditions for all. “We have taken a reasoned, responsible and above all definitive decision in the interests of industry professionals, exhibitors and visitors” - explained Toni D’Andrea, ceo of ISSA Pulire Network - “By September next year we hope that the critical phase of the pandemic will be behind us and that normal conditions will have been restored.”

CORONAVIRUS, WITHOUT GATHERINGS THE RISK IS LOW

A NEW FUTURE FOR DISINFECTANTS? As reported by the website KSAT, Christina Drake, a scientist, is working on a disinfectant characterized by superior performance. Observing the long dwell times and short windows of effectiveness that characterizes disinfectants, Drake has decided to develop a product that she hopes will only require a 30 second dwell time and will work for days. This could be accomplished by leveraging the power of cerium oxide nanoparticles, which will be suspended into the disinfectant so that they can be sprayed on a surface. Once sprayed, the disinfectant would create a film that would continue to regenerate the surface that was targeted. To develop the product, Drake is teaming up her company, Kismet Technologies, with Sudipta Seal, PhD, a material science engineer at the University of Central Florida who specializes in cerium oxide nanoparticles, which have been used for other purposes, such as the healing of diabetic wounds or damaging caused by exposure to radiation.

The rapid spread of Covid-19, and its generating outbreaks of different intensity in different regions of the same country, have raised important questions about the transmission mechanisms of the virus and the role of transmission in the air through droplets. While transmission by direct or indirect contact is widely accepted, transmission through the air is still the subject of debate in the scientific community. A multidisciplinary study conducted in May 2020 by the Experimental Zooprophylactic Institute of Puglia and Basilicata, the Cnr-Isac of Lecce, the Cnr-Isp of Venice and published on Environmental International analyzes the concentrations in the atmosphere of the Coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 in Venice and Lecce, two cities with different diffusion impacts, highlighting the possibility of transmission through the air. All samples collected in residential and urban areas in both cities were negative, the concentration of viral particles was found to be very low in PM10 (less than 0.8 copies per m3 of air) and in each size range analyzed. Therefore, the probability of airborne transmission of the infection outdoors, with the exception of those very crowded areas, appears very low, almost negligible. In gatherings the concentrations can increase locally as well as the risks due to close contacts, therefore it is absolutely necessary to comply with the anti-gathering rules even in outdoor areas.

The CLEANING industry in Europe Chiara Scelsi

T

he European Cleaning and Facility Services Sector is actively contributing to Europe’s social and economic recovery: “The cleaning industry, suffering from invisibility during many years, is now - sadly, due to the COVID-19 pandemic - receiving well-deserved recognition”, states Juan Díez de los Ríos,

12

| December/2020

EFCI - European Cleaning and Facility Services Industry President. “Amidst the uncertainty of our times, - continues - it is important to remember the growth and resilience the industry showed over the last two decades: with a steady growth over the recent years, the European cleaning industry now employs 4.1 million people and has reached an impressive turnover of 120

billion euro. Over the last five years, the number of people employed in the industry grew by an impressive 15%. However, it is still uncertain what the effect of the pandemic on the industry will be. While some sectors may shrink, others - “those who help the world go on turning”, in the words of the Commission’s President von der Leyen - will continue to grow. At the EFCI, we will

continue working to support the cleaning and facility services sector from an EU perspective, by advocating for our industries’ needs and promoting them before all our stakeholders and fellow citizens. The EFCI has recently published a report on the cleaning industry in Europe, and here we present the major issues.

TURNOVER

The overall turnover in the European Cleaning Industry grew by 8% to an astonishing 120 billion euro in 2018. France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the

United Kingdom are the countries with the largest market share in Europe and are accountable for 70% of the overall turnover, followed by Belgium, the Netherlands and Sweden with each having over 4 billion euro turnover annually. Less than a quarter of the turnover in Europe is generated in other countries. Across all countries, the industry grew on average by 7%, but some countries showed even stronger growth with more than 4 billion euro increase in the UK. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs)

account for over half of the total turnover in large countries such as Germany, Italy, and the United Kingdom. However, in France and Spain large enterprises do make up for the majority of revenues. Among the SMEs, companies with between 50 and 249 employees account, on average, for 20% of the total turnover. Again, the share of these companies in the market is lower in France and Spain.

COMPANIES

The European Cleaning Industry also grew in number of companies, reaching a total of 283,506. The increase is largely due to a growth in the number of companies in Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom. In the UK, the number of companies grew by more than 1,500, which were mostly small enterprises with less than 10 employees. Germany also noted a strong growth of 1,300 companies, of which most were self-employed. The number of companies decreased significantly in Belgium (-909) and Greece (-757). The 5 largest European countries in terms of turnover (totalling 70%) also have the highest number of companies (totalling 60%). December/2020 |

13

E

E conom y

Two thirds of the companies in the cleaning industry in Germany, France and Spain employ 2 to 9 employees whereas the share of these small enterprises is even above three quarters in Italy and the UK. Companies with 10 to 19 employees are more present in France and Spain, representing 16% to 17% of all companies compared to 12% to 13% in the other largest countries.

EMPLOYEES

The European Cleaning Industry employs 4.1 million people. Compared to last year, an additional 154 thousand people are now employed in the industry. With over 1.1 million people, the German cleaning industry employs over a quarter of all workers in the European Cleaning Industry. The other top 4 countries have employment levels ranging from 445 to 517 thousand. All other European countries account for 23% of all employees in the Cleaning Industry. Almost all European countries registered an increase in the number of employees. The employment levels in most European countries showed a moderate increase between 2% and 5%. The largest increase was recorded in the United Kingdom (+22%), Portugal (+14%) and Poland (+14%). Lithuania showed the largest decrease (-7%), followed by Switzerland (-6%). The European Cleaning industry is characterized by having a large part of their workforce working part-time. 3.7 million employees - not being self-employed - are together contributing to 2.3 million full-time equivalent workers (FTE). A low ratio indicates more people working part-time and/or working relatively shorter hours. However, large fluctuations are observed among the countries, with Sweden having a ratio of above 90% and Germany only 50%. In France and Spain the largest share of employees work in large companies with more than 250 employees, whereas in Italy this is below 50%. 14

| December/2020

December/2020 |

15

E

E conom y

Medium-sized companies with 50 to 249 employees make up for about a quarter of the workforce in Italy and Germany. The share of employees working in small companies with less than 50 employees is quite constant in all five countries; only Italy has a slightly larger share with 30% of workers employed in this category.

TURNOVER PER COMPANY AND PER EMPLOYEE

The turnover per company provides an indication of the degree of concentration in the industry. Starting at 387 thousand euro in 2013, the turnover per company reached 393 thousand euro in 2017. Smaller countries such as Austria, Luxembourg and Switzerland concentrate their Cleaning Industry turnover amongst fewer companies resulting in a high turnover per company. In contrast, larger countries such as Spain, Italy and France, show lower figures ranging from 327 thousand to 407 thousand euro. The average turnover per employee reached almost 30 thousand euro, corresponding to a productivity increase of almost 15% since 2013.

16

| December/2020

The turnover per employee exceeds 50 thousand euro in Switzerland, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden. The lowest numbers are registered in Bulgaria and Portugal, where the turnover per employee is below 10 thousand euro.

The productivity indicators in the United Kingdom, France and Italy lie above the European average of 30 thousand, showing that the companies there manage to generate more turnover per employee despite the competitive landscape. â–

CLEANING and HYGIENE are at the centre of Europe’s REOPENING STRATEGY

I

ndustrial cleaning is one of the major services industries in Europe. Employing more than 4 million people through over 280,000 companies, its yearly turnover accounts for more than 120 billion euros. Our companies provide professional cleaning, hygiene, sanitisation and disinfection services which are essential in the fight against COVID-19 and will be even be more so in ensuring a safe pathway and through the “new normal”. These services ensure the hygiene and safety of users in buildings, infrastructures, schools, public transports, industrial or cultural spaces and touristic facilities, among others. They are provided by trained employees with the necessary expertise to professionally design and implement targeted cleaning and sanitisation services using the recommended protocols and products. The European Institutions have repeatedly acknowledged the strategic and central role of the industrial cleaning sector in Europe’s economic and social reopening. The Joint European

PROFESSIONAL CLEANING WILL REMAIN ESSENTIAL BEYOND THE CRISIS Various Member States (including Italy, Spain, France or Belgium) have explicitly recognised the essentiality of cleaning activities in different measures adopted in the context of the emergency against COVID-19. The status of essential sector must remain beyond the crisis to ensure: ■ the adequate recognition of the cleaning profession and of its agents in the frontline of the provision of essential services in safeguarding public health; ■ in a labour-intensive sector, a shift in focus towards quality in the purchase of cleaning services by public and private entities, moving forward from an outdated price-based approach. Further, in practical terms and in the crisis’ context, it shall also grant access to personal protective equipment (PPEs) for highly exposed agents as well as the mobility of cleaning agents within Member States and in cross-border mobility.

18

| December/2020

Roadmap of 15 April towards lifting COVID-19 containment measures provided a common framework for European and national authorities to phase-out the extraordinary measures against COVID-19. In the centre of these measures, recommendations included intensifying regular cleaning and disinfection of transport hubs, shops and workplaces, enhanced cleaning of schools and universities or cleaning of high-contact surfaces. Further, the Commission’s Guidance of 13 May on how to safely resume travel and reboot Europe’s tourism in 2020 and beyond highlights how cleaning and hygiene services have a fundamental role to implement the gradual and safe recovery of activities in both transport and tourism. Cleaning and facility services companies are helping Europe reopen. Nevertheless, the sector needs specific support measures to ensure the lasting performance of its companies and calls for a sectoral approach in the design of European short and longer-term recovery strategies, identifying and supporting essential industries’ immediate needs.

A SECTOR HARDLY HIT BY THE CRISIS The sector has been directly hit by the negative economic impact of the containment measures. In some Member States, cleaning companies have lost up to 50% of their activities (and turnover) due to the temporary closure of offices, leisure and educational facilities which represent nearly 54% of the sector’s market segments. While the number of companies being unable to continue in business is still uncertain, cleaning companies will face strong dif-

ficulties in resuming business and in sustaining additional material and organisational costs (which are reaching an average + 5%, including those generated by the acquisition of personal protective equipment and products (PPEs). Further, some companies have been hit by unfair contracting practices: from unilateral cancelations to extended delays in payments. These practices are also aggravating further the cash-flow difficulties.

A VECTOR FOR EUROPE’S RECOVERY THROUGH THE CREATION OF EMPLOYMENT The industrial cleaning sector, with a steady yearly rate of 2,7% in the creation of employment, has been key for the provision of jobs in various segments of the active population. The sector will continue to be a vector for integration in the labour market, and shall play a key role for: ■ the integration of young people into the labour market; ■ the fight against undeclared work; ■ providing employment to workers with transferable skills coming from sectors hardly hit by the Covid-19 outbreak; ■ providing training in fundamental sector-related skills, essential also for basic re and up-skilling; ■ the creation of flexible jobs.

QUALITY-BASED AND FAIR CONTRACTING PRACTICES: AS RELEVANT AS EVER The COVID-19 crisis has evidenced the need for an urgent shift to quality in the criteria to purchase cleaning services. Quality-based selection ensures high social standards, duly trained professionals and the use of the adequate techniques and products to maintain and enhance hygiene and cleanliness levels. Setting aside the focus on price alone is necessary to ensure the provision of essential services that are key for the safe reopening of companies, transport hubs, cultural sites and other facilities and infrastructures.

Quality-based tendering and purchasing of cleaning services by public and private buyers needs to be accompanied by fair contracting practices, such as the ones underlined by the European Business Services Alliance (EBSA) in its statement of 13 May 2020: ■ prompt payment measures, especially for SMEs; ■ duly compliance of contracts during lockdowns and a revision of clauses to include the new hygiene and organisational needs.

The approach of companies to ENVIRONMENTAL risk management

High-risk companies, and in particular those belonging to the chemical sector, seem to be the most active in adopting measures to reduce the environmental impact Simone Ciapparelli

20

| December/2020

C

ompanies all over the world agree on the importance of environmental protection, taking into account the aspects concerning the preservation of the planet when planning their strategies, especially if they are companies operating in high-risk sectors. This is what emerges from a survey carried out by DNV GL - Business Assurance, an important certification body, and GFK Eurisko, an international research institute, which involved more than 3500 professionals from all industrial sectors. The survey focused on the methods of managing environmental aspects in the main risk areas and the initiatives implemented in Europe, Asia, North, Central and South America. Operating in more dangerous areas, where the environmental impact is particularly significant, and therefore being more subject to strict regulations and controls, high-risk companies are those who do more from an environmental point of view, especially in terms of strategic planning and dialogue with stakeholders. Among these companies, those in the chemical sector stand out for their commitment. The companies involved in the survey operate in the primary (4%), secondary (57%) and tertiary sector (35%). 24% of them have fewer than 50 employees, 33% between 50 and 249 and 43% 250 or more; The sample includes 578 highrisk companies, including 177 in the chemical sector. The high-risk classification includes, for example, mining, oil and gas extraction activities, dyeing and tanning of fabrics and garments, cellulose, chemical and pharmaceutical production, civil construction and demolition, disposal of hazar-

dous and non-hazardous waste, disposal of wastewater and black waters.

Environmental protection: measures and guidelines

84% of companies take environmental protection into account in their strategies. This attention is not hindered by the size of the company, in fact 80% of professionals who work in companies with less than 50 employees consider the attention and respect for the environment a fundamental issue. For high-risk businesses, the percentage rises to 92%. The most committed companies are those in the chemical sector, with percentages reaching 98%. 76% of companies adopt an ad hoc policy to manage environmental impact, with Europe registering the highest values (81%). These data show that attention to the environment is not just a facade operation. Regarding the concreteness of the actions provided for by these policies, which include the effective prevention of pollution and the inclusion of guidelines to increase the efficiency of the measures implemented, there are geographical differences. Norwegian (70%) and Swedish (82%) companies are the most advanced and have the highest rates of inclusion in their guideline policies for improving their businesses. China, among the first countries for the increase in the number of new ISO 14001 certifications, states, with 75% of its interviewees, that its policies provide for measures to protect the environment, and that, despite the fact that much remains to be done, the commitment in this regard is growing. With regard to high-risk companies, 88% of these and 96% of

companies in the chemical sector have adopted ad hoc, particularly advanced environmental management policies which, in addition to the protection of the environment and the prevention of pollution, define rules for making company performance increasingly respectful of the environment.

Perception and prevention of risks

Disposal (60%) and the management of hazardous materials and waste (44%) are perceived as the main risks for the environment, but these perceptions are influenced by local peculiarities. Waste disposal worries North Americans the most (69%), while Europeans are more sensitive to the consumption of non-renewable energy resources (38%). 36% of European respondents see a risk in emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases, while in North America the percentage is only 19%. The Netherlands (55%), Norway (51%) and Sweden (54%) are the countries with the highest values. The scarcity of water resources mainly worries Indians (29%). In the chemical sector, the main reasons for concern are the management of hazardous materials and waste (64%), wastewater discharge (62%) and waste disposal (61%), followed by atmospheric emissions (42%). In the management of operational aspects, the companies in this sector are quite advanced: the presence of physical agents such as noise and vibrations (27%) and the structural deficiencies of the sites (12%) is below average. (Fig. 1) As far as risk reduction initiatives are concerned, the ones most companies resort to are the monitoring of processes to assess compliance with legal requirements (75%) and regular maintenance December/2020 |

21

E

E nvironment

of spaces (68%). Design processes to minimize the environmental impact of products and services are less common (47%). Among the professionals who take at least one action to contain risks, it is again the chemical sector that confirms itself as the most active. In addition to monitoring compliance (92%), 82% of chemical industries conduct assessment activities, in order to identify all potential reasons for impact on the environment. 76% of companies in the sector adopt management systems, while 63% resort to monitoring specific environmental indicators. These behaviors can be found in all high-risk companies, albeit with lower percentages than in the chemical sector. The most enterprising companies are therefore those that operate in the most dangerous sectors and most subject to strict regulations and controls.

Determining factors

Compliance with laws and regulations (79%) is the main reason that pushes companies to develop environmental protection initiatives. Other reasons are internal policies (59%), requests from customers and brand reputation (both 36%). For chemical companies, laws and regulations (90%) and internal policies (71%) are decisive. The performance of these companies is influenced by the pressures exerted by communities and institutions and maintaining a dialogue with stakeholders, giving priority to environmental protection, is essential for staying on the market. According to 45% of respondents, the benefits of risk mitigation interventions outweigh the costs. 57% of companies in the primary sector have obtained greater advantages over costs, while in the secondary sector chemical companies stand out with percentages of around 56%. Most companies, in every sector, have benefited in particular from a decrease in environmental accidents (50%), a share that rises to 61% for high-risk companies and 71% for those in the chemical sector. The 22

| December/2020

Figure 1: Main areas of attention for high-risk companies and, among these, for the chemical industries

Figure 2: Benefits deriving from environmental initiatives implemented by high-risk companies and, among these, by the chemical industries

main obstacle to achieving progress in environmental management is, according to companies, the lack of financial resources (33%). This is a problem for

only 26% of chemical industries, while 36% do not see any obstacles to the improvement of environmental management. (Fig. 2)

E

E nvironment

73% of companies have conducted at least one action aimed at improving their environmental reputation, with 45% having resorted to certification based on one standard or a recognized external schema. Among all, the high-risk companies and in particular the chemical ones stand out for the frequency of the use of third party certifications (63%). Nearly half of the chemical industry respondents also report that their own company has published a sustainability report.

Future perspectives

In the future, the percentages recorded for the various risks will decrease. Companies are confident that they will be able to improve the management of problems such as waste disposal (-12%), the management of hazardous materials (-9%), the discharge of wastewater (-9%) and the presence of physical hazards (-12%). For problems that require the intervention of the authorities, as they cannot be solved by companies, the expected reduction is minimal: -3% for non-renewable energy consumption, and -5% for CO2 emissions. For the chemical industries, there is a percentage drop for all risks, except those related to water scarcity (18%) and structural deficiencies (12%), which will remain constant. The percentage drop in risks will be accompanied by a reduction in the number of initiatives that companies will take to keep risks under control, especially as far as it concerns emergency measures (-25%), because the ability to manage certain problems in the future is taken for granted. This may lead to the increase of pressure from the authorities to consider the long-term impacts on the environment and on people, especially in the chemical sector. These industries, in fact, will largely opt for environmental impact assessment (+ 8% compared to the average), monitoring of environmental indicators (+13%) and planning aimed at minimizing the impact on the environment (+18%). 24

| December/2020

Figure 3: Investment intentions with particular reference to high-risk companies and, among these, to the chemical industries

Attention to the environment will remain high: 92% of respondents will in fact maintain or increase the level of investments. 43% of high-risk companies and 48% of chemical industries

confirm the increase in investments in environmental protection in the coming years. (Fig. 3) â– Source: DNV-GL, Environmental Management Executive Summary

TOURISM in free fall

The pandemic crisis is producing devastating effects especially for the tourism economy which, like no other, is based on the interaction between people: the preliminary estimates of the major international organizations on the impact of Covid-19 reveal a collapse in international tourism in 2020 and even the most optimistic scenarios foreshadow an unprecedented crisis Cristina Cardinali

T

he economic scenario highlights the slowing down of world economy during 2019 (+2.9%) both in Europe and in the main Asian economies, while for the current year the global emergency generated by the Covid-19 pandemic and the consequent generalized “lockdown” could result in the worst recession since the Great Depression. Within this international context, Italy, which had already grown less than the European average in 2018, underwent a further sharp slowdown in 2019 with an increase in GDP of just 0.3% and this year will be among the countries most penalized by the pandemic, suffering an estimated GDP contraction of around 9%. The tenth edition of Datatur, created by Federalberghi and the National Bilateral Agency of the Tourism sector, photographs the dynamics of the tourism economy referring to the two-year period preceding that of publication and therefore this edition contains an overview of the tourism sector in general and of the hotel sector in particular, relating to before the Coronavirus emergency and does not analyze, if not with a few brief hints, its effects on the economy of the sector, at the moment still difficult to quantify. According to the first final figures from last year, a further slowdown in incoming tourist flows was also recorded in Italy in 2019 and for the current year

28

| December/2020

there are very severe repercussions of the pandemic on incoming tourism, more penalized than the domestic one. In the hotel sector, the process of restructuring and redevelopment of the facilities continued in 2019. However, the effects of the pandemic may jeopardize the very survival of many of them. On the demand side, characterized over the past two years by dynamics similar to those happening worldwide, customer flows have decelerated, becoming more moderate in 2018, more consistent in 2019 and are expected to be in free fall in 2020. The more modest performances of international tourism in 2019 did not have a negative impact on Italy’s revenues: the expenses of foreign travelers in the country grew by 6.2%, substantially in line with the increase recorded in 2018. For the current year, on the other hand, the collapse of travellers from abroad suggests huge losses in the revenues of the tourist balance. Like the entire economic system, the economy of tourism businesses has undergone a deceleration in 2019: the turnover indices of tourism services increased on average by 2.1%, compared to 3.2% in 2018. The hotel sector, however, continued to record positive trends, with few exceptions, both in terms of occupancy rates and, consequently, in terms of profitability, even if during the year the con-

fidence of businesses and the number of structures at auction has increased. With reference to the labor market, the data relating to 2018 highlight a consistent and generalized growth in employment levels in tourism and the intention of a significant share of entrepreneurs, 77.6%, to recruit employees during 2019. This picture is unfortunately destined to undergo a profound upheaval in 2020 with the turnover and occupancy levels of the hotel sector in free fall due to the repercussions of the health emergency and the measures for its containment. In recent years, companies in the sector have continued to invest in the retraining of their employees and to welcome internship staff at their facilities, including pupils from schools and upper secondary education institutes included in school-work alternation courses. The need to have adequately trained human capital available, fundamental in services, and even more so in tourism, is met in Italy by a broad and diversified panorama of the training offer. At the end of the analysis, the look focused, as always, on the transport system which, in line with the general economic dynamics, reported generally positive results during 2018, also confirmed for 2019, but destined to suffer a unprecedented shock in 2020, with huge losses in all sectors, since

then rise by 4.8% in 2021. In conclusion of these notes, it should be stressed that, as evidenced by the International Monetary Fund itself, there is still considerable uncertainty about the pandemic itself and its macroeconomic repercussions and it is possible that the world economic situation is different from that expected, with considerable risks that it is even worse. In fact, the effects on the economy depend on factors that are currently difficult to predict, including the evolution of the pandemic, the progresses in the search for a vaccine and therapies, the extent and effectiveness of the measures implemented to counteract its negative effects, the extent and duration of the interruptions to the offer. We will therefore have to wait for the next few months to have a more reliable scenario.

THE RANKING OF ITALY

In 2019, international tourist demand grew for the tenth consecutive year, albeit at a slower pace than the extraordinary ones of the previous two years: according to estimates by the World Tourism Organization, international arrivals in the world were 1,461 million, with an increase 3.8% compared to 7.2% in 2017 and 5.6% in 2018. The slowdown, attributable to a multiplicity of factors (the uncertainties linked to Brexit, the failure of Thomas Cook and some low-cost airlines in Europe, the geopolitical and social tensions and the general economic slowdown) prevented the international tourist demand from growing more than the world economy, confirming the broad resilience capacity of the tourism sector. Considering the different areas of the world, the primacy of growth went to the Middle East (+7.6%). Good performances, above the world average, were also recorded by Asia and the Pacific (+4.6%), thanks to the excellent results of South and Southeast Asia, and by Africa (+4.2%), still driven once from the countries 30

The dynamics of Europe (+3.7%), after two years of strong expansion, have undergone a significant downsizing but have managed to keep in line with the global trend thanks to the good performance of the countries of southern and Mediterranean Europe. The most modest increase, even in 2019, was recorded by the American continent (+2%), penalized in this case by the negative results of South America. Tourism is one of the sectors that are more affected by the Covid pandemic and for the current year an unprecedented crisis is expected both for the demand and for the international tourist offer. According to the latest data from the World Tourism Organization, Covid-19 has already caused a 22% contraction in international tourist arrivals in the first quarter of 2020 and the crisis could lead to an annual decrease between 60% and 80% com-

ment to expansion) of the number of structures and, on the other, by the increase in accommodation capacity in terms of rooms and beds available. Especially since the 1980s, the exit from the market of small companies and the strong migration of smaller companies towards higher levels of supply have led to an increase in the average size of hotels, which went from 37,6 to 69,1 beds operation between 1980 and 2019. The gradual shift of the hotel supply system towards increasingly larger structures was accompanied by an intense redevelopment process that saw the number of low-category establishments gradually decrease and, at the same time, expand that of medium-high category hotels. Over time, a process has therefore been activated that has rebalanced the composition of the hotel accommodation offer in Italy: the weight, on the total, of one and two-star establishments, which still up to 2000 represented about half of Italian hotels, was reduced to 24.6% in 2019, while that of 3-star hotels, currently the most represented category (55.2%), took on a predominant importance, and that of four and five-star hotels grew exponentially. The analysis of the structural characteristics of Italian hotels at a disaggregated territorial level highlights how most of the establishments and beds continue to be located in the northern regions, characterized by an older tourist vocation. Specifically, the region in which the hotel accommodation offer (in terms of beds) is highest is Emilia Romagna, followed by Trentino Alto Adige and Veneto. However, it should be added that over the years there has been a redistribution of supply in the areas of the country: a decrease in the incidence of the northern regions, in fact, is contrasted by an increase in that of the southern regions, both in terms of businesses beds. In fact, the hotel accommodation offer of the southern regions, which was particularly dynamic in Puglia, where the number of beds increased by 90.2%, Sicily (+ 60.8%), Basilicata (+ 57.8%) and Calabria (+ 53.6%). 34

The analysis of the structural characteristics of Italian hotels at a disaggregated territorial level highlights how most of the establishments and beds continue to be located in the northern regions, characterized by an older tourist vocation

In general, the relative higher qualification of hotels operating in southern Italy finds its justification in the more recent development of the tourist offer of this area of the country. The picture of the hotel accommodation offer just outlined, which photographs the situation at the end of 2019, is likely to undergo substantial transformations following the Covid-19 pandemic and its repercussions on the country’s tourism system. Although the hotels were not forced to close by the various decrees, Federalberghi reports that around 95% closed during the lockdown period due to the drop in demand.

THE TOURISM SCALE

The repercussions of Covid-19 are also expected to be very heavy on the tourist balance of our country since the negative consequences of the pandemic will hit more intensely on tourism from abroad. An initial indication of the drastic reduction that the revenues of the tourism balance will suffer in the current year comes from the estimates made by ISTAT, according to which the “missed” expenditure of foreigners between March and May 2020 would already be equal to 10 billion euros. ■

COVID -19: chemical industry recognized as ESSENTIAL Chiara Scelsi

C

hemical industry has not been directly affected by the lockdown (with limited exceptions) since it has been recognised as an essential activity. It has, in fact, continuously guaranteed supply of materials and goods essential to deal with the health emergency: medical gases, pharmaceutical reagents and active ingredients, disinfectants and products for personal and environmental hygiene, non-woven fabrics for masks and individual protection devices. Understanding their responsibility in this unprecedented crisis, European Chemical Industry Council - Cefic’s members have been pushing their capacity limits to meet the exponential rise in demand for essential supplies in the countries where they operate. They increased production of critical supplies such as: disinfectants, diagnostic tests, ventilators, protective masks, gloves and gowns, Intensive Care Unit medicines and equipment, and protective clothing. “The European chemical industry did not stop at increasing essential supplies” states Cefic’s President Daniele Ferrari “Our members went on to shift production lines, donate supplies or funds, and invest in research for coronavirus testing.” To shift production processes to adapt to the new needs, some members set up emergency production lines, 36

built new plants, or formed new alliances. For instance, in Ireland biopharma and chemical companies formed a COVID Alliance collaborating with local engineering and construction companies in order to support healthcare facilities. In Spain and Italy, chemical companies supported hospitals ensuring a regular supply of new resources or to set up emergency rooms with medical equipment, devoted to infectious diseases. In Germany, a special platform was created to allow partnerships between hospitals and producers to be formed to simplify the supply of much needed disinfectants. In many cases the increased supply of essential products have been donated to authorities, hospitals, pharmacies, humanitarian organisations and others free of charge. Companies that can’t donate in the form of supplies have been donating funds to hospitals, charitable organisations or research. Other donations include fuel vouchers for emergency service vehicles and medical workers, and free food or drinks for health-care professionals, truck drivers and the delivery people who are vital to maintaining supplies. And there are more examples of the industry collaborating to fight COVID-19; a consortium of Finnish companies have started a project aimed at almost doubling the number of coronavirus tests in Finland. In Switzerland, a chemical company has been donating hydroxychloroquine. Hydroxychloroquine and a related drug, chloroquine, are under evaluation in clinical trials for the treatment of COVID-19. “All this to say that – as an industry – we understand the crucial role we play and we are more than willing to provide solutions in times of crises”, concludes Ferrari.

The disinfectant industry and the COVID-19 impact

Coronavirus is having a major impact in the disinfectant industry. The increasing demand for sanitizers and disinfectants as a preventive measure against COVID-19 has resulted in changing the dynamic of the market. The products are flying off the racks as they are being stockpiled, and manufacturers have started production in large quantities to meet the requirements of the consumers. The demand has surged exponentially, and the market will face a steady demand even when the impact of COVID-19 has reduced. In Europe A.I.S.E., the association representing the European cleaning and hygiene pro-

THE CHEMICAL INDUSTRY IN ITALY: SITUATION AND OUTLOOK

In the midst of a shock of a non-economic nature and such as to put people’s very survival at risk, forecasts are more uncertain than ever and should be considered as scenarios: rather than predicting the evolution of economic variables, it is worth asking what developments are most likely or, on the opposite, more unlikely. The high uncertainty of forecasts does not only depends on the evolution of contagion and the timing of development of the vaccine, but also on changes in the operators’ behavior. At European level, the chemical industry recorded smaller losses (-5.1%), partly because it already experienced a decline in 2019 (compared to the substantial stability recorded in Italy) but mainly because containment measures were only introduced from April and were generally less restrictive. The heavy downsize of manufacturing production in Italy (-20.2% in the first five months on annual basis), following the lockdown, however, has also affected demand for chemicals, leading to a fall in production of 11.9%. As it was not subject to lockdown, chemicals saw a limited recovery in May while manufacturing rebounded as a result of the reopening of activities. Within the chemical industry, there are extremely diversified situations in relation to the nature of customers. Lockdown paralysed the demand from important sectors such as automotive, the fashion system and construction. On the opposite, products needed to face the health emergency have experienced unprecedented demand associated, in the most acute phase, with significant logistic and supply difficulties for some raw materials (in the process of being overcome). The reopening phase sees an uneven improvement between different customer sectors in the presence of a widespread trend towards order fragmentation. The high uncertainty, combined with liquidity constraints, makes customers to keep inventories to minimum level. In addition, some downstream sectors are showing a discontinuous trend since the pre-lockdown orders are being processed with a limited flow of new orders. Despite overcoming the most acute phase of the health emergency, demand for chemical products, functional to protect hygiene and health, remains sustained. Federchimica.it

The European chemical industry is working to ensure continued supply of medical and protective equipment to patients and healthcare workers across Europe ducts industry, is a strategic sector in the fight against the spread of the COVID-19 outbreak. A.I.S.E. and its members are actively supporting authorities and healthcare professionals to manage the current public health crisis, ensuring that essential cleaning, hygiene and disinfectant products can be made available and delivered at a fast pace. Disinfectants produced by the professional cleaning & hygiene sector are key to help combat the spread of the virus in hospitals and food manufacturing facilities as well as other key industries. “Our industry wishes to remind the public of the importance of good hygienic cleaning practices at home - stated the association in an official press release - These come on top of the critical need for thorough and frequent hand washing, as recommended by WHO since the start of this outbreak, with soap and water or alcohol-based solutions. The availability of cleaning, hygiene and disinfectant products is the industry’s first priority, and to achieve this, our sector is in close contact with the relevant authorities at EU and national level. In the current crisis, certain raw materials are in short supply, factories may be understaffed, and our members are experiencing unprecedented logistical challenges in moving supplies and products across borders. In order to ensure the continued supply of these essential products, priority access to raw materials and packaging, as well as logistical support from the authorities, is essential. It is fundamental to protect 38

the health of the population whilst avoiding disruptions to the free movement of key professionals and strategic industries, in particular the delivery of goods and essential services across Europe”. The global disinfectant products market is forecasted to reach USD 30.11 Billion by 2027, according to a new report by Reports and Data. The market for disinfectant products is growing due to the increase in the number of hospital-acquired infections, and also growth in contagious virus-related diseases. The advancement in technology and awareness among the public has led to an increase in the number of surgical operations, which in turn is driving the demand for the market. Strict legislative guidelines have forced hospitals administrative to maintain clean facilities. The recent outbreak of COVID-19 has led organizations to understand the necessity for healthcare facility cleanliness and disinfection. The global spending on healthcare is rising steadily. It was USD 7.8 trillion in 2017 or about 10% of GDP and USD 1,080 per capita. Development of alternatives of disinfectant are also challenging the market growth. Innovative technologies are being developed as a substitute to manual cleaning. North America held the largest market share throughout the forecast period. The region is expected to show several growth opportunities owing to the rising awareness among consumers. The presence of a large number of hospitals, educational institutes, corporate buildings, and the increasing

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR G20 LEADERS TO FIGHT COVID-19

Leaders of the International Council of Chemical Associations (ICCA) representing global chemicals industries across the world urge G20 leaders to “foster a globally coordinated response” to the pandemic. In a letter sent to the G20 leaders, ICCA offers five key recommendations to implement on an international scale to help defeat COVID-19 and help save lives: Designate chemical manufacturers and downstream value chains as essential businesses so that they can continue to operate and deliver the critical goods and services needed to combat the pandemic; Coordinate globally and regionally with industry to ease supply chain constraints; Support and facilitate supply chains for products essential for combatting COVID-19 as well as the value chain materials comprising those products; Commit immediately to a standstill and rollback of trade-distorting measures on products essential for combatting COVID-19; and Provide facilitating and financing support to suppliers of small- and medium-sized enterprises manufacturing products essential for combatting COVID-19, as well as the value chain materials comprising those products, to bolster supply chains and trade flows.

panies, almost twice the manufacturing average (42%). The sector also holds leading positions with regard to the investments needed to implement digital technologies, which involve 72% of chemical companies. Digitalisation – in addition to promoting productivity – offers important opportunities in circular economy, allowing the collection and sharing of large masses of data between players along the supply chain and the improvement of processes throughout the entire product life cycle. Chemistry – together with the pharmaceutical sector – is the most active sector in training (52% of companies), which is crucial in a phase of important changes. Training does not only take place at the moment of first entry into the company, but is continuous. During lockdown the attention paid to human resources and the spread of advanced organizational models has allowed extensive recourse to smart working (51% of companies compared to an industrial average of 24%) as well as training initiatives (14% of companies). The sector, with a long established culture on safety, has encountered fewer difficulties in managing the health emergency. ■

INVESTMENTS KEYSTONE FOR THE RELAUNCH

According to Federchimica, the health crisis, with its economic and social consequences, is taking the chemical industry into a phase of profound transformation that requires significant investments on several fields: sustainability, research, digitization, human capital. Aware of the importance to pursue environmentally friendly and inclusive development, chemicals are the industrial sector with the highest share of companies investing in social and environmental responsibility (56% compared to a manufacturing average of 32%). Innovative technological solutions are needed to promote the circular economy and a more efficient use of resources (including, for example, December/2020 |

CONCENTRATED detergents: the path of hyper-perfume

They are easy to use, convenient, practical and perfectly adaptable to the green and eco-sustainable demand coming from the market Luca Ilorini

C

oncentrated detergents are the product of the moment and the presence of an intense and pleasant fragrance increases its appeal and functionality. An optimal solution that allows to fight waste promoting convenience and, given that perfume is increasingly an important driving force in terms of customer choice even in the professional sector, it is right to find the olfactory solutions that are capable of enhancing the concentrated products, respecting the formulation and compatibility with the product packaging; the use of a concentrated product intrinsically brings with it the need to have a fragrance that stands out for its olfactory boost and above all diffusivity in the environment.

A GROWING NEED

Concentrated detergents require the presence of extremely intense and diffusive fragrances inside them, the demand has definitely shifted towards the world of room deodorants and the players in the sector launch products with fragrances that must diffuse into the environment and not simply limit themselves to accompany the cleaning phase. The market requires more and more products that know how to 40

clean thoroughly using minimal quantities: hence the success of concentrated products that know how to combine the washing action with a strong perfuming action, perhaps combined with the ability to cover certain types of bad smells and, in this perspective, adding claims such as the word ‘super’ can really be an added value even in a sector where a decade ago the fragrance was merely considered a plus and the solution sought was in view of economy and simplicity. The market of concentrated detergents, despite a sometimes higher formula cost, allows the introduction of high value fragrances, given the possibility of a different product positioning than the traditional one in a finished article that definitely has a particular look and functionality.

CONCENTRATED PERFUMES: NUMEROUS ADVANTAGES

Going in the direction of concentrated perfume implies numerous benefits especially for producers who are able to exploit and convey important messages in terms of eco-sustainability and approach to the green world. By inserting a decidedly lower percentage of perfume in the finished detergent product, you can have an optimal yield thanks to concentrated fragrances, processed and made specifically to not contain solvents inside them, with a mix of raw materials with unique diffusivity depending on the final professional detergents. Another significant advantage deriving from the use of concentrated perfumes and detergents is linked to the stability of the formulation, since, as many players in the sector know, at the formulation level the perfume often creates considerable problems, both in terms of solubility and organoleptic variations of the finished product that happen over time and under certain conditions, such as high temperatures in storage warehouses: using a minimum quantity represents an undoubted advantage for the stability of the formulation. Finally, using this kind of fragrances allows one to fully respect the need for sustainability required by the market: reduced quantities of fragrances lead the manufacturer to benefit from significant savings throughout the supply chain, with less use of packaging to which lower costs of transport and consequently of combined disposal are connected.

THE SCENTED NOTE: NOTÂ JUST HEAD

The secret of fragrances for concentrated detergents lies in the ability to be able to concentrate some raw materials maximizing their yield in the environment, the fragrances in concentrated detergents exploit, in fact, the presence of body notes rather than top notes: this process is at the base of creation of numerous essences for the world of detergents which however find maximum application in the hyper concentrated segment. The raw materials of the body are mostly fruity and decidedly floral notes, and support some of the most trending fragrances in the sector of professional concentrated detergents, for example the world of citrus fruits, with bergamot and orange blossom, or the fresh and aromatic one where hints of lavender dominate with strong green shades. The great diffusivity that concentrated deterDecember/2020 |

gents have is linked to the body notes that are able to give volume and persistence to fragrances that otherwise, if made up solely of top notes and high percentages of solvent, would vanish after a short time without persisting in the environment. Cleaning, hygiene and unique fragrances are the basis of the success of the professional detergent market: the magic of the fragrance is linked to the ability to be the perfect synthesis between top, body and base notes of the composition, a mix of smells that in fragrances for concentrated solutions reach their maximum expression.

THE PROBLEMS WITH HIGH TEMPERATURES AND SUMMER PERIODS

There are certain environmental and storage conditions where normal detergents are poorly performing from the point of view of perfuming action, stressful situations such as high temperatures and use in the summer months. After a short time, normal fragrances tend to fade and the top notes, initially perceived, leave room for a generic sensation of cleanliness that persists for a few minutes without satisfying the wishes of customers and brands, which are increasingly fascinated by the duration of the fragrances over time. Concentrated solutions allow fragrances to spread throughout the space with decidedly more important performances, especially in the floor detergent market where, especially in summer, the fragrance tends to fade almost completely over time. In addition to using the synthetic notes, if the final price of the product allows it, an optimal solution could be to include in the perfume some highly perfuming and effective natural essential oils to deodorize with a long-lasting effect, performance that would be in a normal detergent product. Some degreasing detergents, used for cleaning grills and stoves for example, require high temperatures for their activation and in such a context, the use of concentrated 42

perfumes can be an important added value to enhance the intensity of the fragrance.

PERFUMED SOLUTIONS IN GEL FORM

Among the concentrated detergents, the gel format is one of the most innovative and able to maximize the performance of the fragrance in terms of intensity and diffusivity. Usable in most cases both for hand washing of floors and in floor cleaning machines, the gel format allows you to incorporate fragrances of different kinds, from the world of classic lemon to the fascinating one of vanilla, which compared to the world of liquid products, unless that the latter make use of micro-encapsulation technologies, have a greater persistence in the environment. This peculiarity is to be found in the three-dimensional structure that the gel solutions have: the fragrances are ‘incorporated’ within the structure and for this reason they are able to last longer in the environment. It is appropriate to consider that the more volatile top notes of the fragrance could in turn be slightly ‘retained’ but this phenomenon occurs to a very minimal extent if compared to the simple fragrances of a normal professional detergent that contains a significant percentage of solvent able to ‘anchor’ the fragrance further. Particular care is required by the players of the professional sector as regards the fragrance to be conveyed in a gel product since some raw materials, especially the heavier ones, could be the basis of unpleasant halos and residues during the cleaning phase. The gel format, in its concentrated version, is also the best solution for those who want to introduce micro-encapsulated solutions at the level of the finished product, allowing the creation of a stable and easy-to-make finished product, if compared to the world of liquid formats where solutions in capsules can represent a significant problem due to their intrinsic formulation instability. ■

How to BUILD CAREER during crisis

The global economic, social and health crisis we are experiencing is yet another proof of how much any balance that can be built remains in any case extremely fragile Francesca Scelsi

W

hat is happening to our societies globally responds to a concept that physics calls the “Butterfly Effect”, namely “the flapping of a butterfly’s wings that can cause a hurricane on the other side of the world”. We are saying that small actions can help generate big changes and it could not be otherwise in an interconnected and globalized world; we were ready to take all the benefits of this connection of worlds, but we had not fully understood the extent of the butterfly effect and, above all, we did not expect its harmful consequences. Unemployment rates are growing all over the world, in America alone there are more than 20 million new unemployed and unfortunately an increase in rates is also estimated in our country. Never as today we have to understand that the construction of our career is in the hands of each of us and we must build a longterm mentality that helps us to leave the logic of the “workplace” and enter the logic of career planning. What does this mean in practice? First of all, to analyze one’s professional assets, skills, abilities, sector-specific knowledge to understand which markets and which types of companies can be most attracted by our professionalism. Secondly, starting to develop that meta-competence called “relationship management”, otherwise called 44

| December/2020

networking that allows us to have a real safety net, useful in moments of fall such as layoffs or company closures and allows us to be in contact with the right people to be able to lift us up; as some networking experts taught me “the issue is not whether we have a network, the issue is whether we are managing it or not”.

These activities must be oriented towards a long-term professional goal that can be built by trying to answer these questions: ■ Who do I want to be in five years? ■ What skills will I want to have, to do what kind of job, in what sector? ■ What professional value will I offer and to whom?

Starting from the objective backwards, we can build the steps of the professional path that we will have to take, and we will be able to notice any missing skills and include the necessary training to recover them. These types of questions allow us to give us a long-lasting direction that will make sense of the choices and micro-choices we can make today. You understand well the importance of knowing or better defining what our “professional destination” is and then setting intermediate goals to be achieved in this path. In fact, if we do not give ourselves the opportunity to feel within a professional path, we will easily lose the sense of reality, we will find difficulties even in the small daily choices related to the search for work and we will always be prey to the fortuitous opportunities that will arise having the feeling of not have a clear direction.

CAREER PLANNING

Defining the professional project is a fundamental step for those who want to change work or life or for those forced by necessity; in fact, making a project helps us to put all the factors to be taken into consideration to make the change real and even before to evaluate its feasibility. This activity is useful at all levels of management and for any sector or professional role. The professional path or project comes down to a job of raising awareness about our skills and professional skills that is realized through the balance of them. Once the balance of our skills has been completed, we have defined most of the tools useful for defining our project which is basically made up of four main dimensions or rather four steps. 1. Objective: answers the question “what am I getting at”? The professional goal that we are going to define must be specific, measurable, acceptable for yourself, achievable and defined over time, therefore with an expiration date. 2. Timing: answers the question “by when do I want this project to take place?”

As Napoleon Hill said: “a goal is a dream with an expiration date” and this also applies to a professional career. Deadlines push us to action and help us measure the time that passes; they can also be moved if during construction we realize that the construction times are longer than expected, the important thing is to keep active monitoring of the work progress. 3. Resources, Means, Constraints: answers the question “which resources do I have and which are the constraints?” This is a crucial and often very difficult point; In this phase, an analysis of the external situation is structured, similar to the analysis of competition and market that an entrepreneur or a company carries out when a Business Planning process is activated. You need to be very objective and aware of your potential and limitations in order to be able to make a realistic description, and that is why the help of an external consultant is essential. Resources can be both internal (skills, abilities, personal characteristics, etc.) and external (economic, training, etc.); the constraints, on the other hand, can be of a geographic, economic, family, time, health, etc. type. Another way to address this point is through the SWOT analysis tool, which is a matrix that analyzes opportunities and threats both internal and external to the person. 4. Reference Criteria: answers the question “what makes my project the way it is and not something else?” One of the essential aspects of the professional project is that it places the individual “designer” at the center and makes him an active player in the process. The project itself is the product of the individual’s personal characteristics, such as his dreams, his beliefs, his values. These aspects make it unique but it is essential that they are clear in the individual himself. This phase is exactly the one that is faced with the balance of skills and

which is then reported in this part of the professional project. The more specific the project, the more achievable it will be as the individual will have the ability to more effectively measure his progress and to “correct his shot” if he realizes he is going astray or that he has overestimated/ underestimated some dynamics. There are no right or wrong projects, each project has its dignity as long as it is carried out with the right loyalty towards oneself and with the right measure towards the resources and external constraints we have. An excellent self-deception that I often see people put in place is that of proposing unattainable projects and goals as they were conceived (too little time planned, missing an essential qualification, etc.) to then have an excellent demonstration that it cannot be done. So, the project must respect two fundamental criteria: ■ Reality examination with respect to themselves and the self-assessment of their skills and personal characteristics; ■ Reality examination with respect to the external context in which the person moves, or by analyzing if the project is feasible in a predefined geographical area. ■ December/2020 |

SURVIVAL GUIDE to intractable customers

W

e will remember this first part of 2020 over time, it will be narrated in the (digital) manuals of our students and will continue to accompany the television schedules and feed the chatter of (more or less virtual) happy hours of still many people. Among the chatter there will also be comments on the attitude of that customer or on the answers of that intractable colleague who, in such a particular moment, almost seems to do it on purpose! We have analyzed the communication dynamics in times of crisis and we have drawn up a short handbook to better address those who could make interpersonal relationships difficult due to their temperament, and we have identified some traits of people that we have called «intractable». 46

| December/2020

We are sure that you too, in your personal and professional life, have had the opportunity to meet intractable people: those nice people who amaze you with their often unpredictable, sometimes disproportionate reactions, who say things you would not expect and do things that you would not do. Well, if you have met them you may have noticed that they express their irritability as if it were a profession, almost an art, so much so that we can define specific types based on the nuances of their behavior. The «intractable» person may have these salient traits: 1. Aggressive: arrogant tone of voice, this person gives orders, does not listen, does not accept being questioned or criticized. It has a language of constant pretension and does not admit points of view other than its own.

2. S arcastic: this person uses irony and controversy to strike the interlocutor, believes he is a witty person, uses this way of communicating to not openly say what he thinks but lets it be understood indirectly. 3. Explosive: people with this personality are apparently calm, they explode like a mine when you least expect it, they live in turmoil, smoldering anger even when they say «yes, everything is fine...». It is as beautiful as a soap bubble that bursts as soon as you touch it. 4. Complaining: this person complains about everything, but he/ she doesn’t act to change things, always using alibis and scapegoats, always blaming others. 5. Silent: silent and closed in on itself, this kind of person does not react, speaks in monosyllables or guttural

verses. This person gives signs with his head but you never know what he/she is really thinking and the dialogue becomes really difficult, practically a monologue. Assenting: nice and outgoing, this person goes out of its way to be helpful and always seemingly available. Then he/she does not follow through on what he promised, giving excuses and then offering again support that will not come. Pessimist: completely negative people, they only express difficulties and obstacles. They have a doom and gloom outlook and always talk about what’s wrong. Arrogant: the typical know-it-all, this person shows to others how to do it and corrects to the bitter end even when he has no qualification to do so. His opinions become unquestionable competences. Doubtful: this character of person does not decide and waits for the others to do so, and then reproaches that he would have preferred something else. A rather demanding gregarious figure, especially when he has to work in a team with a responsible role.

In this short and at times extreme list do you recognize any colleague, customer or supplier? If you answered affirmatively, you need to know that, statistically, you will also be recognized in the same list by someone else. It’s statistics. Nobody’s perfect. So how could you react to these dystonic attitudes, to achieve the best possible interpersonal relationship? Here are some brief indications that have the sole purpose of stimulating a reflection dedicated to each type of profile, without the pretense of transforming or educating these behaviors because, as you know, guiding an effective change in the ways of relating is a long and demanding job to leave to the experts. 1. Aggressive: stand up to them without responding to aggression with aggression, no discussions and direct criticism. Listen to the end without interrupting. Shift your attention to something shared,

create a common point of view, then re-propose your position as a logical alternative to the vision of the overbearing person. Better to ask questions to understand, rather than affirmations to answer. Sarcastic: uncover the dig you received asking for clarification on the meaning («if you say so then you mean exactly that...»), force this person to rationalize the joke and, if you can, let it go. Explosive: make this type of person blow up, let it vent and let it cool down, stay physically close without saying anything and don’t make clumsy gestures, with a calm voice you could say: «when you have calmed down, I’m really interested in your point of view». Complaining: listen to the complaint with courtesy, but do not give solidarity («I agree with you…»), shift the discussion to different hypotheses of behavior to correct the complaint («what exactly do you mean when you say that ...? So what could you do differently to get a different result?»). Silent: be firm and try not to lose patience. If you ask a few more questions, make it specific otherwise take your time and think about it («it doesn’t matter if you don’t want to answer me now, we’ll talk about it later, at another time ...»). Nodding: make things clear, remembering that you have already asked for his help many times and underlining how important his contribution is for you; if you can, create a pro-

cedure (first step ... then ... finally), always ask this person for an articulated confirmation and not just a gesture of assent. 7. Pessimist: reaffirm your optimism, adding (not denying) to the probability of catastrophe, even that of success, trying to question the certainty of bad luck with a request for exception («and if it were not so? How do you know that it will surely go like this in the future too»?). 8. Arrogant: check knowledge, asking for explanations and advice, to understand if this person actually has the operational and concrete answers to the problems. Once you have found the gap, with kindness, offer a way out (a different point of view) without falling into the temptation of the challenge. 9. Doubtful: go back to the real reason why this type of person does not decide (fear, lack of ability) and ask to propose concrete solutions or alternative solutions («I’m not asking you for an answer but at least what would you do in this situation...» or “your opinion is important to me: in any case if you were in my place what would you do?). Always remember that your interlocutor is doing the best he can do, for the person he is, for the experience he has and for the relational and emotional intelligence he is able to offer. We are sure that you will try these suggestions immediately with your colleagues or customers and you will benefit from them! ■ December/2020 |

Amsterdam INNOVATION AWARD, the winner is Leobot The innovative cleaning robot finished ahead of the other three category winners elected on 12 May

D

uring the third day of Interclean 2020, the main appointment for the professional cleaning sector, held this year in 100% virtual mode, was announced the absolute winner of the Amsterdam Innovation Award, a contest that celebrates the best solutions that aim to innovate the world of cleaning. The prestigious award was won by LeoBot, from the Japanese company LionsBot.

Leobot is a family of cleaning robots, each model specialized in carrying out different tasks, but all characterized by excellent cleaning results and great personality. These robots are able to interact with humans, establishing relationships with workers through continuous interaction with the environment, elevating their mood and motivational state. Instead of opposing the human workers, LeoBot improves their performance by encouraging them to be proud of their work. LeoBot, which had already triumphed in the machine category, was chosen as the overall winner among the winning products in three other categories: VacuTronic by Hermes (category Equipment, Detergents and Restrooms), ToolSense IOT & ToolSense NOW by ToolSense (category E-Cleaning), and Essity’s TORK Virtual Reality Clean Hands Training (category Related Products and Services). Sustainability was key criteria for the judges this year, all award-winning products demonstrated their ability to drive the circular economy or reduce resource consumption. The drive for efficiency and productivity was another important point for the jury: the winning products and solutions

were designed to reduce the time required to carry out tasks and free up resources to be used for improving the quality of cleaning. Regarding the other category winners, VacuTronic by Hermes is a tool suitable for cleaning all types of facades that collects the wastewater created during the process, allowing you to protect the environment by preventing wastewater from penetrating the ground. ToolSense IOT & ToolSense NOW by ToolSense aims at eliminating errors in the use of machines through the digitization of cleaning processes, at much lower costs than other systems. The system can be used with any brand of machines, and is easily applicable to machines of any size. In addition to the category award, Essity’s TORK Virtual Reality Clean Hands Training also won the Visitors Choice Award, an award assigned to the product voted as the most innovative by Interclean visitors. Parasites ON BOARD Alex Pezzin Large ferries are real traveling hotels, with some peculiarities: ■ The turnover of guests is very high: on average every 12 hours. ■ The situations are often heterogeneous ■ The need to intervene very quickly: the so-called “long break” lasts two hours! ■ Having to operate in close elbow contact with forced personnel in a very short time: cleaning, maintenance, checks, vehicle loading and unloading and food supplies which are also subject to tight deadlines. ■ Heterogeneity of possible “parasites”. 58

| December/2020

■ Each ferry has its own structural characteristics. ■ Difficulty in establishing a professional relationship with the referents which vary from time to time. ■ Extreme difficulty in using some technical resources (especially with regard to rodent traps): once the ship has set sail it becomes practically inaccessible All this has led to difficulties in monetizing the offer which, once signed, entailed significant organizational burdens. The unexpected item was insufficient, so part of the costs was transferred to the item experiences. The contract

had a two-year duration and included: ■ 10 pest and rat control treatments for each unit. ■ 10 monitoring traps for crawling insects in kitchens and pantries (refreshment areas were not contemplated). ■ Consulting support for HACCP plans. ■ Compilation of forms and inspection reports. ■ We have provided and installed (together with maintenance) the electro-light traps in food environments. ■ Any interventions aimed at resolving particular reports have been listed separately.

P

P est C ontrol

The planned annual monitoring and pest and rat control interventions were calibrated according to a schedule provided by the client. In practice, they indicated the arrival of a specific ship, for which it was necessary to carry out our work a few days in advance. The name of the technicians was then communicated (by sending a photocopy of the identity documents) and the vehicle registration number; this was necessary to access the port. Problems encountered were bed bugs, bathroom flies and fruit flies, as well as three cases of rodents.

BED BUGS (Cimex lectularius)

This hematophagous ectoparasitic insect has parasitized humans since ancient times. It has been the main problem that we have always focused on during our inspections and as a result of reports from both passengers and staff. The offending area was that of the lounge chair where passengers without a cabin can rest. The choice of technical resources was conditioned by the desire to eliminate both the problem and have a residual effect in order to avoid, as far as possible, the recurrence of the infestation. So we opted for spraying using microencapsulated formulations and making extensive use of spray cans equipped with spouts and dispensing active foams. The intervention involved a technician for about an hour of work. 60

RODENTS (Rattus norvegicus)

BATH FLIES (Diptera belonging to the Psychodidae family)

Fortunately, the actual rodenticide interventions were reduced to three interventions on two different ferries involving the sewer rat spotted in the storage areas for which snap traps were placed. In these cases, the collaboration of the staff was requested. When a capture was completed, they had to take the trap with due caution and put it in a safety container supplied by us (it was a container for hospital waste) and communicate it to us via mobile phone. It was the most delicate aspect because it involved protocols that had to keep in mind very strictly.

In a nutshell, these insects (not bloodsucking, not to be confused with sand flies, belonging to the genus Phlebotomus) lay their eggs in the siphons of the toilets and the larvae develop in the organic material that accumulates there. The treatments involved a microspraying of insecticide in a water-based formulation. In some cases, very few in truth, cleaners were recommended to use enzymes to eliminate encrustations and drain the deposits on the bottom of the siphons, with the almost certainty that the thing would not be done.

CONCLUSIONS

FRUIT FLIES (Drosophila melanogaster) We indicate the species as highly probable but without an adequate entomological identification. Given its predilection for ripe fruit, since treatments of any kind couldn’t be carried out, the manager of the storage areas was provided with specific traps.

Sometimes it was necessary to rely on emergency response teams to eliminate unannounced incursions of parasites. All with the client who required reassuring reports such as to relieve them of any responsibility. It was a grueling challenge, and like all challenges it was involving, but from an organizational point of view it was comparable to the efforts of Sisyphus. As soon as a problem was solved on a ferry, a new one appeared on another ship.

SCHEDULED TREATMENT as required until the problem is solved

| December/2020

Treatment technique Treat with insecticides taking care to spray also cracks and crevices. In addition, bed headboards, beds, mattresses, chandeliers, paintings, electrical system, skirting boards. Alternatively, in the same places it is possible to use dry steam at high temperatures, or with cryogenic techniques (nitrogen or liquid carbon dioxide). Mixed techniques can be used as the physical means (heat or cold have no residual effect). It is considered useful to emphasize that the technical competence of the operator is essential as long as he is granted the necessary time to not neglect any possible refuge. For a hotel room, for example, two to four hours are required.
