Christian Dior Museum & Garden - Musée et Jardin Christian Dior
Tancrède Museum - Musée Trancrède
2010 EXHIBITION: "The Dior Grand Ball". This exhibition will present the grand balls and evening parties which studded the 20th century and were the occasion, for the famous couturiers, and in particular for Christian Dior from 1947, to design exceptional creations, inspired by the traditions and innovations of past years. Christian Dior himself participated in costume in several memorable balls, notably the mythical ball given by Charles de Beistegui at Venice on 3 September 1951, the 18th century Domino ball at the Labia Palace, often referred to as the “ball of the century ”. Through costumes, decorations, original texts and manuscripts, film and music extracts reminiscent of these famous balls, the exhibition will bring back to life a period when extravagance and fantasy prevailed. It will also pay a tribute to our contemporary period by displaying the creations of the artistic directors who have followed Christian Dior, especially John Galliano, who has often drawn inspiration from history. The sumptuous balls given when launching Dior perfurmes will be staged, for example.
The Tancrède Museum presents the story of the conquest of Southern Italy, around 1036, by Tancrède de Hauteville, son of an insignificant Norman lord. His knights established the powerful kingdom of Sicily and were the origin of the most brilliant civilisation in the Middle Ages. The reconstitution of a medieval garden plunges the visitor into the life of the Norman Conquests. VALOGNES
Untouched by the ravages of war, Bricquebec has preserved the physical character it had at the time Queen Victoria honoured the town with her visit. Its streets are not laid out in any strict and unendearing pattern, indeed some date back to times long forgotten. Most houses have not been given a coating to hide their rustic stone walls, and some retain their blue schist roofing tiles. The fortress, which gives the town centre its charm, is little changed from medieval times and the visitor will note the 11-sided keep. Today, Bricquebec is a small town whose market is one of the most well-known of the region: it covers nearly half of the entire town!
Valognes was originally a Gaulish village called Alauna. Following the arrival of the Vikings on Norman soil, Valognes (circa 10th century) gained a large ducal residence whose notable guests include none other than William the Bastard, future conqueror of England. Subsequently occupied by the Navarrians and the English during the Hundred Years War, the town was prospering again by the 15th century. Then in the 17th century, majestic private town houses were built, engendering the town’s persisting nickname “Norman Versailles”. Thanks to its wealth of religious activity, Valognes was to become the capital of Cotentin.

COUTANCES The cathedral, the churches dedicated to Saint Peter and Saint Nicholas, the public gardens, the ancient hospital, the areas of postwar reconstruction, the Evêque Park, and the classical-style town houses are just some of the sites that make Coutances a town of art and history. Manche’s cultural focal point, Coutances reverberates every year to its famous jazz festival “Jazz sous les Pommiers” which takes place during Ascensiontide.

SAINT-SAUVEUR-LE-VICOMTE
The picturesque town of Saint-Sauveur-le-Vicomte stands on the banks of the River Douve. It is famous for its fortified castle, flanked with 14th century towers and dominated by an impressive keep. The castle was twice laid siege during the Hundred Years War. On the fringes of the Regional Park of Cotentin and Bessin Marshes, Saint-Sauveur-le-Vicomte is also the native town of the 19th century novelist Barbey d’Aurevilly, whose inspiration owed much to the surrounding heathlands and marshes.

VILLEDIEU-LES-POÊLES
Founded in 1130 by Henri de Beauclerc, son of William the Conqueror, Villedieu-les-Poêles developed a dynamic copper-working industry: pan-making, copperware, boiler-making and foundry. Every four years, the Grand Sacre religious procession commemorates the founding of the town with Church dignitaries and a delegation of the Knights of Malta in full regalia. Today, the quiet town is home to a population of 5 000 and has succeeded in keeping its dynamic craft industries alive. For this reason, the town has been awarded the title “Ville et Métiers d’Art”. Its workshops open their doors to curious visitors. Visit the charming town centre and wander through the myriad of little streets bordered with courtyards and gardens that will take you back to another time.

LA GRANDE RADE DE CHERBOURG
The building of Cherbourg-Octeville Harbour was one of the greatest undertakings of the 18th century. Undoubtedly its most remarkable feature is the fact that it presents the visitor with three centuries of military architecture. Among the forts that once guaranteed the protection of the port’s approaches, that of Querqueville, on the western point of the harbour, was built between 1779 and 1794. In 1860, at the behest of Napoleon III, the main wall was given three forts: the West Fort, the Central Fort and the East Fort, the latter adjoining the Isle of Pelée. Even today, the Grande Rade is the largest man-made harbour in the world and shelters France’s most diverse port in terms of activity : military, merchant, fishing, ferry and leisure.
■ Barfleur
E1
BARFLEUR
Barfleur was one of Manche’s most important ports during the Middle Ages. Indeed, Duke William set out from here to conqueror England and, later on, Norman knights were shipped out to administer their English fiefs. In 1194, Barfleur once again saw history in the making with Richard Coeur de Lion passing through on his way to be crowned King of England. This little fishing port, with its granite houses and quays stacked with lobster pots, is considered to be one of the most beautiful villages of France. The church nestles among noble dwellings of granite with schist roofs creating a fine composition of local architecture.
Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue Since July 2008, the towers of Tatihou and La Hougue are part of the Vauban fortifications registered as a UNESCO world heritage monument E2
L’ILE TATIHOU
Nestled in Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue Roadstead, the Isle of Tatihou has known three centuries of remarkable events linked to its numerous vocations that were military (as can be seen with the fortified Vauban Tower), commercial, scientific and educational. Today, it is an exceptional site combining maritime heritage and nature preservation. To defend the kingdom's coastal borders, Vauban proposed creating citadels or strongholds, observation and defence towers. This is how the Towers of La Hougue and Tatihou came to be built after 1692. Every summer, the island plays host to its famous folk music festival, “Les Traversées”. Opening Times : 01/04 to 30/09, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. 01/02 to 31/03 and October, weekends and school holidays, 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Closed in January and December. THE HEADLAND OF CARTERET Rocky Cateret Headland looks over Hatainville Dunes, offering an exceptional vantage point from which to view the Channel Islands. High on the headland’s plateau, heathland covered with yellow-flowering gorse is home to the bright and furtive Dartford warbler, while the raven and the peregrine falcon amuse themselves around the steep-sided schist and sandstone cliffs where the annual rock rose grows. At the lighthouse, recently restored low dry-stone walls help preserve the site and guide visitors along the cliff tops of the Côte-des-Isles.
THE HATAINVILLE DUNES Between the headlands of Carteret and Rozel, the heavy Hatainville Dunes rise to over 250 feet, covering ancient cliffs of 70 000 years ago in a blanket of sand. Local vegetation is a mosaic of species, greatly influenced by the salty spray of the sea, the wind and occasional inundations of fresh water. Many rare plants lend the dunes their delicate colours as the seasons pass: the blue of sea lymegrass, the yellow and brown of the spider orchid, the mauve of Breckland wild thyme and the bright pink of the pyramidal orchid.

NATURE SITES
THE HAM ROCKS At a height of 330 feet, the siliceous slopes of Ham Rocks dominate the Vire Valley and its meandering path through the bocage of Saint-Lô Country. Heathland, dry grassland, wooded slopes, caves, fissures, damp meadows and streams are home to a multitude of species that ensure the perennial natural wealth of Manche’s oldest protected site. A pleasant trip through the site will undoubtedly uncover autumn squill, a small, late-flowering member of the lily family, as well as sunny river banks buzzing with the field cricket’s inimitable stridulation.

THE SAIRE VALLEY
The Saire Valley is the jewel in Cotentin’s crown. The moist valleys of Fermanville are a verdant mixture of dense woodland, uncultivated heath and isolated thickets. Brick Cove is trimmed with a beach of rough sand and is the perfect growing environment for protected plants such as sea kale and the yellow horned poppy. The eastern end of the cove is flanked by Lévi Headland, a rocky protrusion clothed with a pink mantle of thrift. Further on towards the Réthoville Ponds, you may come across white spoonbills with their strange beaks resembling the culinary implement after which they are named. At the foot of Gatteville Lighthouse, enjoy the steely light shimmering off the Gattemare Pond, separated from the sea by a line of sand dunes and supplied with fresh water from a solitary stream.
POINTE D’AGON-COUTAINVILLE & THE SIENNE BAY Here and there, the line of sand dunes along the west coast of Cotentin is interrupted by eight natural harbours. This geographic configuration is the only one of its kind on the Continent. The River Sienne flows into the Channel at Regnéville-sur-Mer creating a vast, brackish estuary that covers over 900 hectares between Agon Spit and Montmartin-sur-Mer. Pale-bellied brent geese, oystercatchers and Kentish plovers profit from this vast expanse to pass the winter or reproduce.

NATURE SITES
THE CLIFFS OF THE HAGUE & THE HEATHLANDS OF VAUVILLE At the heart of the Natura 2000 site “Coast and Heathland of Hague Headland”, the high granite cliffs of Jobourg Point and Voidries give a choice of spectacular views of the Channel Islands and the turquoise coves at their foot. This abrupt separation between land and sea is home to a wide variety of species and a synonym for biodiversity. Peregrine falcons, shags, fulmars and ravens all find the steep slopes ideal for resting and nesting. Down on the foreshore, common eel-grass abounds.

AROUND THE HAMBYE ABBEY Surrounded by woodland and bocage, Hambye Abbey was once at the heart of a vast heathland of dry grass and little copses. The paths that criss-cross the site lead you through the many species of this area of low vegetation and shrubs. The Sienne and the Doquette are the main waterways running through the site and are both ideal for the reproduction of migratory fish. The rivers supply the surrounding meadows with sustenance and create little ponds and damp patches rich in rare plant species. If you’re lucky, you may see the fragile and thin-bodied cordulia dragonfly.
THE HEATHLANDS OF LESSAY The slash and burn of the 11th century and subsequent agriculture gave birth to the vast heathlands of Lessay. This man-made landscape contains an important and surprising variety of plant species. Heather and gorse are plentiful on the dry heath, whose monotony is broken by maritime pine, marsh gentian, autumn lady’s tresses and sundew in the fertile, moist hollows.
