The spring oil-change season is here. Although it’s a chore, many of us enjoy spending some time in the shop. There’s a certain satisfaction to be had by taking care of your own things, and changing oil delivers that satisfaction. Of course, we know very well that some people prefer to go as long as possible between oil changes. While some customers take full advantage of our 25,000-mile service life, most view it as a proxy for quality or extra protection in case they exceed their usual drain interval length. Many people find it hard to believe that it’s possible to go that long between oil changes. The concept challenges the things they’ve been taught by people they respect and the messages they’ve received from other, bigger oil companies. Well, it’s about to get easier. Mobil just released Mobil 1 Annual Protection with a drain interval of 20,000 miles or one year. Despite

what your initial reaction might be, this is good news. Every time they copy us, our sales increase. Although, with a 20,000-mile limitation, they didn’t quite copy us, did they? The fact is, we set the stage for synthetic lubricants almost 45 years ago and everyone else is still trying to catch up. When AMSOIL Synthetic Motor Oil launched in 1972, it carried a 25,000-mile service life. Signature Series still does. When Mobil 1 was introduced in 1974, it also carried a 25,000-mile service life. They pulled that back shortly thereafter and went with the standard 3,000mile recommendation. Through the years they’ve been eeking their way back up, first with Mobil 1 Extended Performance and its 15,000-mile limitation and now with Annual Protection, but they’re still not at 25,000 miles. While this certainly ramps up the competition in the high-end

motor oil market, it also validates the things we’ve been saying all along. It reinforces our position and increases our credibility with a broader audience. We’re not afraid of Big Oil joining the extendeddrain club. In fact, we’re glad they’re finally doing the right thing. Besides, not only does Signature Series last longer than Mobil 1 Annual Protection, but it’s priced better and our extended-drain recommendations apply to vehicles in warranty, too.

ENGINE MASTERS CHALLENGE Your Engine Masters Challenge article (December 2016 AMSOIL Magazine) was short on information. Which small block, which big block, what were their output numbers and at what RPM? I am aware of the AMSOIL EMC event, but did not know when or where. A better notification in advance of the event, along with how to enter, in both the AMSOIL Magazine and through web announcements would be a big help. Maybe you could put a copy of the entry form and rules on the web. I have people I know would love to give it a try. Raymond Montanari
PUNKIN CHUNKIN I am the Dealer who uses AMSOIL products for my air cannon Chunk’n-ology. I was proud to have the AMSOIL flag flying on the cannon at the 2016 event. Thomas Frazier AMSOIL: Thank you for your letter and picture. We always enjoy hearing about this unique competition and are proud to know our products play an important role in protecting your air cannon.
DRAIN INTERVALS My four-cylinder turbocharged engine requires oil be changed every 3,000 miles, no matter if regular or synthetic oil is used, in order to protect the warranty per the owner’s manual. In the past with all my vehicles, I have always used Signature Series. Will AMSOIL support the 10-year/100,000-mile warranty if I switch from regular motor oil to Signature Series and change the oil per the AMSOIL severe-service requirements? Thanks, Jim Colwell AMSOIL: Any potential lubricant-related failure would be covered by the AMSOIL Limited Warranty. Non-lubricant-related issues would remain covered by your vehicle warranty. You can be confident that using AMSOIL synthetic lubricants and practicing extended drain intervals will not void your new vehicle warranty. Keep following our published guidelines with Signature Series, and your car will be well-protected.

OCTANE I appreciated your “Octane Explained: Does Premium, High-Octane Gas Boost Performance?” article (December 2016 AMSOIL Magazine). I use regular gasoline with ethanol in all my small engines with AMSOIL P.i. and Gasoline Stabilizer. I have never had a problem until this year with my snowblower. All the mechanics say never use regular gasoline with ethanol in small engines. After a week, the problem wound up being the ignition coil. Your article never mentioned ethanol. Could you do an article and shine a light on this fact/fiction? I would appreciate it. I am an AMSOIL user since 1978 and a Lifetime Dealer. Keep up with the excellent products. Len Lakes AMSOIL: Thank you for your long-time loyalty and your suggestion; we will look at addressing the ethanol issue in an upcoming AMSOIL Magazine article or column. In the meantime, AMSOIL Quickshot ® is formulated to address ethanol-related issues in small engines. See the Quickshot Data Bulletin (G2761) for more information.
SEALED OIL CELLS I just wanted you to know how I learned about AMSOIL in the first place. Twenty years ago I purchased an aftermarket ignition system from Jacobs Electronics*. It completely eliminated engine cylinder misfires (allowed 10-15% increase in oil change intervals). Jacobs recommended AMSOIL. I typed AMSOIL in an Internet search engine and the rest is history. I subscribe to the free publication NASA Tech Briefs and found an article entitled “Castrol Reinvents the Oil Change with NEXCEL.” The engine oil and filter are contained in a sealed oil cell. It claims that “Road cars fitted with NEXCEL are expected to go into production within the next five years.” I would be curious to know if you folks at AMSOIL already knew about this or not. Sincerely, Nathan Rice AMSOIL: Yes, we are aware of this interesting new technology, which is being tested on an Aston Martin* Vulcan*, a track-only supercar. Oil is pumped into the oil cell, which also contains the filter, and lifts out of the engine compartment almost like a car battery, allowing disposal of both the oil and filter in one shot. We are constantly looking for ways to simplify the oil-change process and lower the associated expense. While oil cells may simplify the process, they are unlikely to lower the expense of an oil change (and may raise it). Additionally, full original equipment manufacturer (OEM) support would be required to ensure universal oil-cell fitment. You can be sure we will continue to keep a close eye on this technology and be ready should it gain a foothold in the market. Email letters to: letters@amsoil.com Or, mail them to: AMSOIL INC. The industry has low-speed pre-ignition in its sights A potentially catastrophic problem is surfacing in some new engines. Here’s how we’re working to solve it.
Matt Erickson | TECHNICAL MANAGER – PCLT PRODUCTS AND MECHANICAL R&D Today’s smaller, hotter-running engines pose significant challenges to lubricants. The latest is a phenomenon called low-speed pre-ignition (LSPI), which can destroy pistons and connecting rods. What is LSPI? As its name implies, LSPI is the spontaneous ignition of the fuel/air mixture prior to spark-triggered ignition. It’s another version of pre-ignition, which has been around since engines were invented. In this case, though, it occurs under low-speed, high-torque conditions in turbocharged gasolinedirect-injected (TGDI) engines and is much more destructive than typical pre-ignition. In a direct-injected, four-stroke engine, the piston travels down the cylinder during the intake stroke. This is when the intake valve opens and allows air to charge the cylinder. During the compression stroke, fuel is injected, the valves close and the piston travels up the cylinder, squeezing the fuel/air mixture in preparation for combustion. In a properly operating engine, sparktriggered ignition typically occurs a few degrees before the piston reaches top dead center. This careful timing ensures the downward force of the exploding fuel/air mixture works in tandem with downward piston momentum, resulting in optimum engine efficiency and power. LSPI effectively throws off engine timing. In turbocharged engines operating under certain conditions, particularly at low speeds and under high torque, like when taking off from a stoplight, the fuel/ air can spontaneously ignite too early in the combustion cycle. The expanding combustion charge collides with the piston as it’s still moving up the cylinder.
The collision between the exploding combustion charge and the upwardmoving piston can destroy the pistons or connecting rods. What causes LSPI? Current thinking suggests the cause is due in part to oil/fuel droplets or particles in the cylinder auto-igniting randomly. The droplets/particles heat enough to ignite the air/fuel mixture before the spark plug ignites. This means oil formulation can play a role in reducing LSPI.
Under normal operation (left), spark-triggered ignition is timed to work in tandem with downward piston momentum. When LSPI occurs, the fuel/air spontaneously ignites too early, clashing with the upward-moving piston and causing damage.
Testing has shown that certain motor oil components can promote LSPI, while others can help quench it, such as zinc dialkyl dithiophosphate (ZDDP). Naturally, it’s tempting to think, “Well, dump a bunch of ZDDP into your formulations.” But ZDDP has been severely limited over the years in motor oil formulations since it’s been shown to have a negative effect on catalytic converters. Calcium, too, has been shown to affect LSPI, while PAO base oils have been show to help reduce LSPI. Even the formulation of gasoline plays a role; however, it’s easier to solve the problem by reformulating motor oil. So you can see the balancing act confronting oil formulators. It’s no easy

task figuring out how to formulate a motor oil that delivers excellent wear protection, resists the increased heat of turbocharged engines, prevents deposits, acts as a hydraulic fluid and, now, combats LSPI. Keep in mind that the performance of the total formulation is what counts. New performance specs coming Difficult or not, fighting LSPI must be done. Next-generation oils will need to pass an LSPI test to meet the new API SP and ILSAC GF-6 performance specifications set to take effect in mid-2019. General Motors* is ahead of the game and requires oils to pass its own LSPI test to meet its updated GM* dexos1* specification (known as dexos1:2015) scheduled to take effect Aug. 31, 2017. For now, you don’t have to worry too much. Your vehicle’s computer is programmed to avoid operating conditions that lead to LSPI. However, operating your engine under those conditions does promise fuel economy gains, so once oils hit the market that combat LSPI, you can bet the vehicle manufacturers will program their vehicles to benefit from those efficiency gains. We’ve been hard at work reformulating Signature Series Synthetic Motor Oil, XL Synthetic Motor Oil and OE Synthetic Motor Oil in preparation for the new engine challenges addressed by the new specifications. The early signs are exciting. Signature Series aced the new LSPI test while improving performance in other areas as well. You recently saw significant changes to our diesel oils. Expect more changes to our gasoline motor oils this year. We’ll have more information in the months ahead.

A Closer Look at the New AMSOIL Synthetic Diesel Oil Lineup: An Interview with Alan Amatuzio New Signature Series Max-Duty Synthetic Diesel Oil and Heavy-Duty Synthetic Diesel Oil represent a leap forward for diesel engine protection and performance. We sat down with AMSOIL Co-President & COO Alan Amatuzio to learn what this means for Dealers and customers.
AMSOIL Magazine: The new Signature Series Max-Duty Synthetic Diesel Oil lineup has replaced Premium Synthetic Diesel Oil, while the new Heavy-Duty Synthetic Diesel Oil lineup has replaced OE Synthetic Diesel Oil. These new oils were developed to meet the latest API CK-4 specification, correct? Amatuzio: Yes, the new API CK-4 specification represents a true upgrade in performance. We have fully embraced it, and feel strongly about its ability to protect modern diesel engines. When its predecessor, CJ-4, was introduced a decade ago, we were apprehensive. There was a takeaway in sulfated ash content (TBN) that we didn’t think adequately addressed the latest engine hardware changes. The new CK-4 standard, however, represents a real improvement, and oils meeting the CK-4 standard are better-equipped to protect modern diesel engines. AMSOIL Magazine: Why did AMSOIL introduce two different diesel oils: Signature Series and Heavy-Duty? Amatuzio: We did a lot of market research and put a lot of work into understanding our customers and what they want. With that knowledge, we developed two distinct lines to fulfill the variety of customer needs and wants. We developed Signature Series for customers who want nothing but the very best protection for their vehicles and equipment, and we developed Heavy-Duty for price-conscious customers and customers who are not interested in the benefits of extended drain intervals, but still want outstanding protection for their vehicles and equipment.
It’s an unapologetic, top-tier product geared for those who want the absolute best. Alan Amatuzio Co-President & COO
AMSOIL Magazine: Is this why both diesel oil lineups include a 5W-40 viscosity – to provide options within the same market?
Amatuzio: Absolutely, 5W-40 is the primary recommendation for turbodiesel trucks, and it’s important for Dealers to have products for this market. Different customers have different buying motivations, and offering both Signature Series 5W-40 and Heavy-Duty 5W40 presents options. Signature Series also has wider applicability, appealing to over-the-road truckers who want a great combination of wear protection and fuel economy, as well as the convenience and cost savings of extended drain intervals. AMSOIL Magazine: Why was the Signature Series brand carried over into the diesel world? Amatuzio: Oil chemistry and additives have come a long way since the introduction of the API CJ-4 specification, and the advanced technology we used to formulate Signature Series is worthy of the Signature Series name. We don’t use this name with every product. To be worthy of our founder’s signature, the product must represent the pinnacle of technology. The new Signature Series MaxDuty Synthetic Diesel Oil does just that. It’s an unapologetic, top-tier product geared for those who want the absolute best. It incorporates the top-of-the-line technology our competitors won’t touch because it’s too costly. Some might say Signature Series is too good or it’s overkill, but we say overkill is underrated. Our customers rely on their vehicles and equipment to make a living; turbodiesel enthusiasts are passionate about their vehicles and invest a lot of money into them. They want the best protection money can buy. Signature Series provides it. It’s a special product that we’re very proud of. It provides 6X more protection against cylinder wear than required by a leading industry standard*. Cylinder wear leads to oil consumption. Wear protection and reduced oil consumption are the top benefits our customers told us they want in a diesel oil. Signature Series hits it out of the park when it comes to addressing these issues. AMSOIL Magazine: How does Heavy-Duty Synthetic Diesel Oil stack up?
*than required by the Detroit Diesel DD13 Scuffing Test for Specification DFS 93K222.
Amatuzio: Heavy-Duty Synthetic Diesel Oil is geared for price-conscious customers, but when it comes to protection, it’s an outstanding option. It presents a serious upgrade over conventional and competing synthetic diesel oils, providing 4X more engine protection than required by a leading industry standard*, which, again, reduces oil consumption. While Signature Series may be used for extended drain intervals, Heavy-Duty Synthetic Diesel Oil is recommended for OEM-specified drain intervals. Not everyone wants to extend their drain intervals, and that’s fine. Here’s a costcompetitive product that provides wear protection well beyond what can be found elsewhere. AMSOIL Magazine: While the old OE Synthetic Diesel Oil was API-licensed, Heavy-Duty Synthetic Diesel Oil is not. What led to this decision? Amatuzio: The API licensing system is a voluntary certification that only sets minimum quality standards. We examined the licensable API CK-4 technology on the market, and it did not meet our standards. Tying ourselves to an API license also limits the flexibility we need to quickly adopt new technologies that can further improve protection. Before making the important decision on whether to seek the API license or not, we performed an extensive survey of our customers to determine which was more important to them: the API license or better protection and performance. The message was clear: Our customers look to us to provide outstanding protection and performance, and this is what is most important to them. When formulating our new diesel oils, we used the API CK-4 specification as the minimum and engineered protection that surpasses it. We want to give customers the most protection we can, and sometimes that requires opting out of a licensing program. Diesel customers can rest assured their equipment is protected, and we back them up with our warranty. AMSOIL Magazine: Why doesn’t Signature Series 0W-40 carry the 6X more wear protection claim that’s common to the other Signature Series viscosities? Amatuzio: Although Signature Series 0W-40 uses the same advanced synthetic chemistry as the rest of our Signature Series line, the 6X more wear protection claim is based on the Detroit Diesel DFS 93K222 specification,
Some might say Signature Series is too good or it’s overkill, but we say overkill is underrated.
which doesn’t recognize the 0W-40 viscosity. However, because coldtemperature performance is the primary attribute in which customers buying 0W-40 are interested, we’re marketing this oil with a very impressive claim: Signature Series 0W-40 offers 4X better cold-temperature performance**. That means engines turn over faster in cold weather, while start-up wear and unnecessary idle times are dramatically reduced, helping extend equipment life.
AMSOIL Magazine: I’ve heard Signature Series incorporates new additive technology. What are the benefits? Amatuzio: Yes, we formulated Signature Series with a highly advanced mixed detergent system. Its magnesium and calcium content provides strong TBN retention, which makes it better at fighting acids and keeping engines clean. While other diesel oils may start with a high TBN number out of the bottle, the key is how well the oil retains alkalinity throughout its service life. This relates to what is known in the industry as hard TBN and soft TBN. Hard TBN effectively neutralizes acids and is achieved with the proper balance of calcium and magnesium additives. Soft TBN helps fresh oil achieve a high TBN number, but it depletes rapidly and is ineffective at neutralizing acids. AMSOIL Signature Series Max-Duty Synthetic Diesel Oil boasts 10 points of hard TBN, acid-neutralizing power that effectively protects engines for the long haul. AMSOIL Magazine: In which markets should Dealers pursue sales of the new diesel oils? Amatuzio: Turbodiesel pickup enthusiasts, contractors, small fleets, owner-operators and independent auto parts stores are all great markets. The turbodiesel truck market, in particular, is ripe for AMSOIL Dealers. Turbodiesel enthusiasts invest heavily in their trucks to increase power and make them stand out, and they seek the best protection they can find. We’ve also invested heavily in pursuing brand recognition and credibility in this market. We sponsor and participate in well-known and highly publicized diesel competitions like the
**when compared to SAE 15W-40 in ASTM D5293 Cold-Cranking Viscosity test.
Alan Amatuzio Co-President & COO
Diesel Power Challenge and Ultimate Callout Challenge. The coverage for these events in diesel enthusiast publications is outstanding, opening doors for Dealers to pursue sales in this market. AMSOIL Magazine: How do prices and commissions compare to the old synthetic diesel oil lineup? Amatuzio: Pricing for both the Signature Series and Heavy-Duty lines is consistent with the previous Premium and OE lines, and I am happy to say that Heavy-Duty Synthetic Diesel Oil provides Dealers higher commissions than the old OE product. We wanted Dealers to make more money with this product, and were able to achieve this while keeping it costcompetitive to help Dealers break into new markets and build their businesses. You’re getting new, better technology, a cost-competitive product and higher commissions. That’s a big win for everyone. AMSOIL Magazine: Diesel engines are an expensive investment. While our new diesel oils provide second-tonone protection and performance, is there anything else diesel owners can do to protect and extend the life of their equipment? Amatuzio: Yes, pairing an AMSOIL Ea® Bypass Filtration System with our top-tier diesel oil presents a serious 1-2 punch against wear. No matter how good the oil, particles present a serious challenge to equipment life. It is up to the oil to protect against metal-to-metal contact, deposits and acids, but it can’t protect against invasive particles. It is the filter’s job to remove particles from the system, but most full-flow filters are only effective removing particles down to 20 microns in size. AMSOIL Ea Bypass Filters efficiently remove contaminants down to 2 microns, dramatically reducing long-term wear. Not only that, but adding an Ea Bypass Filter allows the user to increase oil capacity. The more oil in the system, the more protection against wear.
NEW BYPASS SYSTEMS FOR DIESEL PICKUPS New Single-Remote Ea® Bypass Filter systems are now available for Ford* Powerstroke* 6.7L applications (BMK33) and Cummins* 5.9L/6.7L applications (BMK34). AMSOIL DEALER PLOTS COURSE FOR FUTURE Dealer Nicholas Wesner of Fort Myers, Fla. has found success in the retail market by focusing on customer service. Now he’s branching out. “I am a full-time FedEx employee, Vehicle Operator in the U.S. Air Force Reserve and full-time husband and father,” said Wesner.
business by reaching out to other types of accounts. His experience working with retail accounts will serve him well in the new venture.
In 2004, Wesner added “AMSOIL Dealer” to his list of roles. “A friend of mine, an AMSOIL Dealer at the time, made me an offer I couldn’t refuse,” said Wesner. “If I didn’t like how my vehicle was running [on AMSOIL motor oil] he would refill it with the product I was using prior. I’ve since become a firm believer in the quality and convenience these products provide.”
“Most [retail accounts] are not only looking to offer a quality product, they want product support,” said Wesner. “I remember this when approaching potential accounts and inquire into the frequency of visits from their other vendors.”
Wesner’s business grew steadily in the years that followed. He attributes much of his success to a simple, customerservice-oriented philosophy. “Coming from a customer service background, I try to go outside the box to meet the needs of my accounts. Whether it’s fronting products or wiping the counter, customer service goes a long way. Accounts won’t think twice about ordering again if you show them you truly care about the partnership.” Under the guidance of Field Sales Representative Ernie Jones, Wesner plans to expand his
Wesner developed a good metric for determining how often to call on potential accounts. “The number of visits depends on how familiar they are with the AMSOIL brand and how comfortable they are with you,” he said. After over a decade of forging successful customer relationships, Wesner has advice for his fellow Dealers. “Don’t get discouraged if someone says ‘no’ at first,” he said. “Stay in touch with the potential account and take note of the customers in his store. Bulk orders are nice, but try to find the one product that breaks the ice. Find what works best for each account. In-person visits, in my opinion, produce far more than just calling. Customer service is key. ”

AMSOIL Helps Motorcyclist Set Guinness World Record Nearly everyone has dreamed of hitting the open road on a motorcycle, but most lack the courage to do it. Not Danell Lynn.
On Sept. 19, 2014, Lynn departed Tucson, Ariz. alone aboard her Triumph* Bonneville*. After nearly one year and 48,600 miles, she returned, the proud owner of a new Guinness World Record: “Longest Journey by Motorcycle in Single Country.” She’s also the first solo woman motorcyclist to hold this record. Her journey took her though 48 states and parts of Canada, and she credits AMSOIL products for helping keep her bike running strong. Here’s her story. AMSOIL Magazine: How long have you been riding a motorcycle? And what was your first bike? Danell Lynn: I was first on a bike in utero, riding along with my mom and dad. But then we did not have bikes for
14

many years, and about 15 years ago I got into pillion riding again [riding as a passenger]. Then about six or seven years ago, I decided I wanted to drive and take journeys on my own. When I bought my first bike I wanted to purchase a Bonneville, but was told from all my family of riders that you do not start with your dream bike because you will drop it – you will go down, which I have learned even after 50,000+ miles. Sometimes you still just drop it. I had three drops (tip-overs) during my year on the road. So I bought a great starter for just $1,200 and learned my wrenching and riding skills on that 1982 Virago* and then bought my dream bike – the bike I would take for a year on the road – my Triumph Bonneville.
AMSOIL Magazine: Tell us more about your Bonneville. Lynn: When selecting my choice bike for such a trip, I simply went to where my heart was and selected a 2006 Triumph Bonneville, named her “Amelia” and took off to ride around my native country and into Canada, ensuring a great experience and adventure. AMSOIL Magazine: Throughout your journey, did you ever feel like giving up? Lynn: People often ask for my worst experience or scariest time on this journey, and I really don’t have one. If the weather was bad and re-routed me, it always led to a unique experience I would not have had otherwise.
*All trademarked names and images are the property of their respective owners and may be registered marks in some countries. No affiliation or endorsement claim, express or implied, is made by their use. All products advertised here are developed by AMSOIL for use in the applications shown.
My biggest lows were at the start of the trip. In the first two days I had a swarm of emotions, from wondering, ‘what am I doing,’ to the thrill of taking off on an adventure, to body aches and pains and forgetting my backpack at a gas station on day two with my wallet, camera and all the important stuff for the trip. (I did go back and recover it.) It was a whirlwind that put me in tears at my second stop, breaking down into the arms of a friend. As she let me cry, I worked through the bag setup and got rid of the backpack, putting all necessary stuff right on the bike and my water pack directly into my jacket, which helped get rid of my back pain. A good cry, a deep breath, a hug of hope and I was off again. This was the closest I got to giving up, but I never doubted that I would complete it – just the momentary breakdowns that you rise from stronger.
“I was more fearful of not going than anything that might occur out on the road... I am scared to not live life to the fullest.” Danell Lynn
AMSOIL Magazine: Did you face any dangerous situations? Lynn: I guess the biggest danger I faced was before I threw my leg over the bike on day one. I was more fearful of not going than anything that might occur out on the road. Before I departed, I wrote a blog on that exact subject. I am scared of living the typical nine-to-five life because it is what you are supposed to do. I fear the monotony of routines to just get the job done. I am scared to not live life to the fullest.
AMSOIL Magazine: What does that mean to you? Everyone living their life to the fullest is different. For me, if I ask myself, ‘Will I regret not going?’ the answer is always ‘yes,’ so I always must go. I don’t believe in regrets, and I do believe in trusting your gut. If I feel nervous fear (this is the good fear – fight or flight), then I walk away from situations. If I stop to camp and the woods in that spot are creeping me out, then I drive on until the next great spot. On day two it was fitting to pass through Why, Ariz. before continuing through Nice, Calif.; New Hope, Ariz.; Many, La. and Goodnight, Texas. Seeing the signs for cities like Whynot, Miss.; You Bet, Calif. and Hope, La., one cannot help but pull out the inspiration from the road itself standing behind you and cheering you on. It was within happenstance moments like these that life taught its lessons, unexpected and at times lifesaving, featuring both the low and high points into one. AMSOIL Magazine: Can you provide an example? For example, when I crashed at slow speed on the ice, this gave me a chance to meet a driver coming around the corner to warn me about the blind curve ahead that met a steep downward hill with no guardrail and was covered in sheet ice. I would take my mini-crash over the possibilities of that hill any day. Three moments like this occurred during my year and became my most profound, even in their simplicity, because they taught me there is more out there in the universe and it will take care of you if you are open to it. I cannot think of a better word than to say, at times, this trip was magical in so many ways.
AMSOIL Magazine: How did you come to choose AMSOIL products for your bike? Lynn: I had heard of AMSOIL previously, but just ran a non-synthetic in my bikes (I was one of those who would buy a good oil, but one on sale for my oil changes), but that all changed during one fateful dealership stop during my first month on the road. It was after a fateful flat tire and a needed stop for service in California. I was chatting about my journey with some of the shop guys and a man approached. This is when I met John Madri, independent AMSOIL Dealer from Roseville, and a new love affair with synthetics began. He happened to be at the shop that day and let the shop know that he was supporting my journey by providing me AMSOIL products at my service, and I noticed a difference those first weeks in the bike and the ride. Amelia loved it, so we were hooked. She ran smoother, I could go longer between oil changes and could do an oil and chain change at the same time (which makes a huge difference when you are on a long haul).

How It Works Attach your Dealer number in the area marked “referral number” on the back cover of the catalog. Use a catalog label from the AMSOIL Print Center for a more professional impression. A direct mailing to a specific neighborhood could reach numerous customers who do not attend race events or trade shows, but still want the best protection for their vehicles. Also, people at shows or events who are initially only somewhat interested or don’t have time to talk can take a retail catalog home to review at their leisure.

Use this simple idea to refer more prospects, generate more customers and earn additional commissions. Copy & Paste + ?zo=123456 might be the formula to achieving greater success. Dan Gorski | DIRECTOR, CUSTOMER SERVICE Success in sales requires hard work and talent. There are no silver bullets. There are, however, unique tricks of the trade that can help you get ahead. First, you have to consider a few core principles: • People prefer to buy from people they know, like, trust and who appreciate their business. • Prompt follow-up is critical. This is true whether you’re calling on businesses, working events or responding to online requests. Prompt follow-up shows commitment, demonstrates professionalism and illustrates your willingness to earn a prospect’s business. In addition, people who are interested in a new product or idea tend to either act or lose interest quickly. • People interested in new products tend to research online before buying. This is true for consumers buying for their personal use, but it also applies to businesses. This is one of the main reasons product reviews were added to the AMSOIL website. Many people prefer the convenience of buying online because it’s fast, convenient and secure. Many people are also in a hurry, so anything that reduces the number of clicks necessary to find desired information is helpful. • Even people who are very interested may need to be called on several times or visit a website multiple times before buying products. There are many other factors to consider on a customer-by-customer basis. While there are no magic techniques that work for all customers and situations, the following easy and highly adaptable

concept could be helpful for Dealers of all experience levels. After you’ve discussed AMSOIL with a prospect, send him or her a brief note by email, text message or response to their online post. Personalize the message based on your discussion and include a link to the most appropriate content on the AMSOIL corporate website using a Dealer-number-transferring link. This may sound complicated, but it’s not and there are great benefits. Simply copy the URL for the appropriate webpage from the corporate website, paste it into your message and type “?zo=1234567” (insert your Dealer number) at the end of the link. For example, if you want to send someone to the corporate website to learn about motorcycle oils, the link would look like this: http:// www.amsoil.com/shop/by-equipment/ motorcycles/?zo=1234567. All you need to send the link is the prospect’s email address or mobile phone number. Once you’ve started sending these messages to prospects, consider what you’ve accomplished: • You’ve sent a personalized message within a few minutes. That’s fast follow-up. • The prospect now has your name, phone number, email address, website URL and other information. This might be easier to find than a brochure, business card or catalog when they want to contact you. • You’ve directed them to the exact information that fits their needs in just one click. Dealer-number-transferring links also eliminate the requirement to type (and potentially mistype) the URL.
• If your prospects follow your links to the corporate website, your referral information will automatically transfer so you receive proper credit if they buy products, request a catalog or register as an account. • If the prospect visits the corporate website, his or her phone/computer/ tablet and your referral number will be linked for up to 30 days. If he or she returns directly to the corporate site, you will still receive the appropriate credit for his or her transactions. • If prospects visit and leave the corporate site without taking action (buying, registering or requesting a catalog), they will start seeing AMSOIL remarketing ads at other websites they visit. These ads are intended to encourage prospects to return to the AMSOIL corporate website and prevent them from losing interest in AMSOIL. Again, this isn’t a magic technique that’s going to work, or even be applicable, in all situations. But, it’s one valuable tool most Dealers can use to their advantage. Try it and put it to work for you. For more information about creating Dealernumber-transferring links or to view sample messages, search for “How do I create a ZO transfer link to another page on amsoil.com?” in the Knowledgebase within the Dealer Zone.

Independent Auto Repair Shops
Every AMSOIL Dealer Needs One Approximately 82 percent of American drivers are DIFM (Do-It-For-Me) customers. Having an excellent independent repair shop on your list of accounts can greatly benefit your business. A solid relationship with at least one installer helps you meet the needs of DIFM customers. It also creates more commissions and profit potential. If you don’t have an installer account, where will you send new customers who don’t change their own oil?
