The American Petroleum Institute (API) has been plagued with issues as it works TOWARD INTRODUCING THE NEW 30 SPECIlCATION 4HE lRST CHALLENGE IS UPDATING ALL OF the sequence engine test platforms to ensure they’re relevant to today’s engines.

The old sequences, for example, didn’t account for newer technology like variable valve timing, direct injection and turbochargers. Considering the prevalence of those technologies now, the importance of these updates cannot be overstated.

It’s easier said than done, however. It isn’t as simple as just putting an engine on a stand and running a test – vehicles today are so computerized they won’t function properly without all of their sensors and computers working together via the software that controls them. You can’t replicate real-life performance without the computers that run the cars, and you don’t have the entire car in the lab when the tests are run. So custom electronics and software are required to run an engine on a stand for sequence tests. /NCE THEY DO DElNE THE NEW TEST PARAMETERS AND lGURE OUT HOW TO BUILD the new test stand, they have to qualify the test. Each test must be repeatable, which means it must return the same or very similar results every time it’s run in the same lab, and it must be reproducible, which means it must return the same or very similar results every time it’s run in any other lab. Most important-

ly, the tests have to differentiate between good and bad oil. Considering all of that, it’s no wonder that the process has been a struggle.

In the meantime, auto manufacturers have been pleading for an interim solution to address the issues they’ve BEEN HAVING IN THE lELD WITH LOW SPEED pre-ignition (LSPI). LSPI can cause catastrophic damage and has been a real problem for vehicle makers for the past couple of years. Since compression equals power, over time your engine can make less power, limiting your ability to ride or work as effectively as possible.

Eventually, deposits and sludge can wreck the engine completely.

Extra weight = heat Riders often modify their UTVs or ATVs to increase power or productivity. They might add roof and door panels, a winch, a plow and skid plates. Plus, how often do you haul a load of gravel or pull a trailer or other implement?

Upgrade to synthetic lubricants

This all adds weight, and extra weight equals extra heat. Heat, in turn, causes lubricants to break down sooner, which places your engine at risk of wear.

So what’s the solution? Ride more conservatively?

Haul lighter loads and work less?

Heat invites engine wear The oil’s primary job is to form a protective layer on metal parts to keep them separated so they don’t rub together and wear out. High heat, however, can cause oils formulated for standard service to become thinner (lose viscosity). Oil that has lost VISCOSITY CAN FAIL TO DEVELOP AN OIL lLM OF ADEQUATE thickness or strength to protect against wear.

Plus, high heat invites sludge and performance-robbing deposits inside the engine. Sludge can clog oil passages and starve the engine of oil, while deposits can cause the piston rings to stick or interfere with proper valve operation, leading to reduced engine compression.

Why European cars use special motor oil /WNING A %UROPEAN CAR COMES WITH CHALLENGES BUT lNDING the right motor oil doesn’t have to be one of them.

Michael Meuli | VICE PRESIDENT, TECHNICAL DEVELOPMENT I spend way too much time in my car not to enjoy the driving experience.

That’s one reason I’ve always been a car guy. And it’s also why I love European cars. In my opinion, they represent the pinnacle of craftsmanship, quality and performance. Although, in recent years, a handful of U.S.-made cars with outstanding performance have given their European counterparts a run for their money. That’s not to say, however, there haven’t been drawbacks to having owned a BMW*, Porsche*, Saab* and other European cars in my lifetime. Although today’s foreign cars are largely reliable, many of their predecessors suffered from odd and expensive problems that resulted in the stigma that European cars are a pain to own.

Here’s where motor oil comes into play.

An oil’s formulation can have a negative effect on sensitive emissions-control devices. Certain components in the motor oil formulation, such as sulfated ash, phosphorus and sulfur (known collectively as SAPS), can reduce the life of DPFs and other emissions devices.

For that reason, motor oils formulated for European vehicles often contain lower SAPS levels to protect emissionscontrol systems.

Adding to the challenge, European cars require a different motor oil than what you use in your Ford*, Chevy* or Dodge*. Today, I want to talk about those differences and how AMSOIL offers a solution for European car owners.

Europeans are accustomed to changing oil far less often, with drain intervals of 16,000 km (10,000 miles) or so. One reason is the higher cost of oil in Europe. Another is the differences between manufacturer recommendations. For example, oil CHANGES FOR "-7S ARE required only every 15,000 miles.

1) Strict Emissions Standards The European Union maintains more strict standards for carbon dioxide (CO2) and carbon monoxide (CO) emissions than we do. (Our standards for nitrogen oxides [NOx] and particulate matter [PM] are more strict, however.)

Because modern diesels emit lower CO2 than gasoline engines, the European market pivoted toward increased use of diesels in the 1990s. Diesels also provide better fuel economy.

One drawback, however, is the higher levels of NOx and PM diesels produce.

To counteract this, diesel-powered European vehicles are equipped with DIESEL PARTICULATE lLTERS $0& AND catalysts designed to reduce tailpipe emissions.

2) Longer Oil Change Intervals European automakers have recommended longer oil change intervals for years. In the U.S. and Canada, howevER THE TRADITIONAL MILE OIL CHANGE is still around.

Longer drain intervals common with European cars require an oil capable of protecting against wear, deposits and sludge for the duration, which requires a more robust oil.

3) Viscosity Differences Check the owner’s manual for which VISCOSITY OIL TO USE AND YOU LL LIKELY lND a chart that suggests different viscosities for different operating temperature ranges. In cold weather, the OEM may RECOMMEND 7 )N WARM WEATHER

resistance once operating temperatures are reached.

4) OEM Approvals Staying with your owner’s manual, the OEM also recommends you use an oil THAT MEETS A SPECIlC PERFORMANCE STANdard. A Volkswagen* owner, for example, must use an oil that meets the requirements of VW’s own performance specs.

The same holds for Mercedes*, BMW, Porsche and other European cars.

Complicating matters, each OEM motor OIL SPECIlCATION IS SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT /NE OEM may require oils that offer better performance against oxidation, while another may require better resistance TO VISCOSITY LOSS /%- SPECIlCATIONS tend to be more strict and require better motor oil performance than the industry specs we’re used to in the U.S. and Canada, such as API SN Plus or ILSAC GF-5. This, of course, requires more advanced (and typically expensive) motor oil technology delivered almost exclusively by synthetics.

All these differences can confuse motorists and leave them scratching their heads over which oil to use. Every day, it seems, another headline heralds the demise of the internal-combustion engine. The current narrative has scores of automakers and motorists abandoning their traditional vehicles – and the lubricants they use – in favor of electric vehicles, a scenario that has many enthusiasts wondering if the vehicles they love will still be around in the years ahead.

We dug past the headlines and consulted nearly 40 studies, reports and articles to gain insight into how electric vehicles may reshape the automotive landscape. Reality, it turns out, is far different than the picture painted IN THE MEDIA (ERE WE PRESENT lVE KEY POINTS THAT CLARIFY THE CONFUSION SURROUNDING THE ELECTRIC VEHICLE MARKET The bottom line? Although the technology that powers our vehicles will change, an estimated 92 percent of vehicles on the road worldwide in 2030 will still use an internal combustion engine (ICE) in some capacity.

An electric vehicle can plug into a charging station to recharge batteries that run electric motors used to propel the vehicle. They include battery electric vehicles (BEVs), like the Nissan* Leaf* AND 4ESLA

have plugs and are capable of running on all-electric power for only a few miles, like the Toyota* Prius*.
