Keeping pace and edging your way to the finish line is just as important as being able to maintain control of your speed.This month Racing Equipment News highlights where the rubber meets the road in our annual Wheels,Tires, and Brakes issue. WELD Wheels has been producing performance wheel options since 1967. Greg Weld, already successful in Sprint Car driving, decided to make his own wheels after he could not find the right combination of strength and performance in wheels that were available at the time.Their line of wheels span across all avenues of racing from the street to off-road. MOMO is set to launch a new line of wheels.Their Heritage series, which debut at last year’s SEMA, is set to bring a touch of old school class that had previously been on classic Ferrari and Porsche. One market segment that was lagging behind in wheel options in the early 2000’s was the large truck market. American Force Wheels has cornered that market with their line of sharp designed, but durable and strong beadlocked wheels. Nitto tires have been the choice by racers and motorsport teams for years.This month, we feature their performance driven competition tires, as well as their off-grab “Grabber” line of tires. In terms of braking,Wilwood Engineering has been developing brake components since 1977. Wilwood applications allow the company to rapidly develop custom engineered brake systems using their off-the-shelf and custom components. It is not just about performance pads, discs, and calibers that determine your braking performance. Aggressive with Style MOMO was founded in 1964 by race car driver Gianpiero Moretti. In that year, Moretti commissioned a local craftsman to produce a custom steering wheel for his own racing car. This special steering wheel – the first MOMO steering wheel in the Company’s history – had a superior and thicker grip compared to the normal racing steering wheels available at the time. TIn terms of options for wheels, when it came to car owners there always has been a number of styles and performance options available. Ranging from edgier looks to lightweight track day rollers, the early 2000’s saw a further explosion in custom wheel offerings. Ray Shadravan owner of local Miami wheel manufacturer since 1995 was looking for the next big thing.

Rotors Asphalt or Pavement

W

HETHER you call them pavement late models, or asphalt late models, these cars represent some of the most exciting racing that can be seen not only the USA, but around the world where short track late model stock cars compete. It also represents one of the biggest challenges for brake systems and components. The products defined in this section are applicable to the full spectrum of fabricated tube frame and stock frame clip race cars using modified suspensions and aftermarket brake systems. Scalloped Rotor When it comes to rotors, racers are constantly searching for the ultimate balance between the lowest weight and the ability to effectively manage heat. Decreased rotating weight in the drive line provides quicker deceleration under braking and quicker acceleration out of the corners. Calipers Road or Circuit racing

R

OAD RACING, or circuit racing as it is referred to in many places, might well be the largest motorsports category in the world. It is certainly the most diverse.

Competing vehicles cover genres from small engine, lightweight, purpose built formula cars, to full size production chassis touring cars, fabricated tube frame cars, and a long list of other specialty categories that provide competition opportunities at every experience level imaginable. Rules governing the various classes can be highly restrictive, or completely open to the builder. This diverse range of specially prepared vehicles racing on a myriad of venue types creates an equally diverse range of brake system and component requirements. For many categories that are closely defined by rules and vehicle type, Wilwood has created road racing kits for many popular applications within our bolt-on brake kit line. Kits in this group are focused first and foremost on safety and overall stopping power, along with system balance, effective heat management, sustained durability, and optimized configurations within the class rules. HIGH PERFORMANCE BRAKE FLUIDS FEATURE HIGH BOILING POINTS FOR MAXIMUM BRAKING Combatting brake fatigue on the track or deep in an off-road course comes down to effectively fighting the high temperatures associated with heavy braking use. While typical day to day driving might have your brake rotors and pads reach a balmy 400 degrees Fahrenheit, racing applications quickly reach into a 600 to even 1500 degrees. Lower boiling point brake fluids found in non-race specific formulas generate air bubbles as the brake fluid exceeds its temperature limits. These bubbles are what you feel when your brake pedal compression becomes soft. DOT 3, 4, and 5.1 formulas feature a wet and dry boiling point. In terms of fresh brake fluid the dry boiling point is the number to look for. Over time however, these fluids become susceptible to water absorption, which is why DOT standards include the wet boiling point. For your specific application, it is important to evaluate your performance needs. 48

MOTUL RBF 600 BRAKE FLUID

Extreme high performance polyglycol brake fluid. Far exceeds the standards of DOT 4. Each bottle is filled with Nitrogen, increasing shelf life and eliminating contamination while factory sealed. Keeping the Pressure On

How the rubber of your tires meets the road can be often overlooked. The subject of maintaining tire pressures can dramatically impact your racing performance. Not only can temperature and atmospheric conditions come into play, but the actual road surface and type of racing applications can mandate a tire pressure adjustment. Air compressors range in a variety of sizes and applications, and when you are in the pits having one on hand not only for your tires, but also running some air tools can be a major benefit at critical times.
