Dear Readers, Sometimes when I write these its really hard to figure out the right thing to say; take now for example. I always hope to reach out to you all and write something inspiring. But instead, you inspire me. Which I am eternally grateful for.

Racing Minds: Tell us a little about yourself, like your name, age, and location, and whatever else you wish to say. Gem McDonald: My name is Gem McDonald, I live in regional Victoria, I am happy that the warmer seasons are on their way.

RM: What first made you pick up a camera and start

photographing? GM: Oh gosh, well I suppose i have always taken photos every now-and-then, to record special events, holidays etc, but taking photo’s didn’t become a significant part of my life until less than two years ago. I take photographs as a straight forward way of documenting my own life, as a creative outlet, and to produce images that I want to get out of my head. I get kind of anxious when I leave the house without a camera these days.. I’m undecided about whether that is a bad thing.

RM: What do you think is the most important quality

in an artist? GM: I think this really depends on what type of art an artist is hoping to create, and what message they are trying to get across through their work. I do think it is great though, and enviable, when an artist has no inhibitions when it comes to pursuing their craft. When artists are brave and persistent in exploring new ideas and new ways to express them, well that can make for art that is exciting.

RM: Who inspires you the most? GM: No one person inspires me the most. I find

different things that different people do inspiring. My friends are pretty inspiring people, and I also relate to/ have a soft spot for women artists that create to share part of themselves, who are compelled to get ‘their story’ out there and heard.

RM: Describe yourself in five words. GM: I don’t think this is a question I can answer. I am forever growing and changing as a person, and don’t think five words will some up this process.

RM: What is your least favorite thing to photograph? GM: I take photos for myself. I don’t photograph anything i don’t want to photograph.

RM: What types of places – or even a single place – do you find the most inspiration? GM: I take lots of photographs around my neighbourhood, and am inspired by the changes in season and light. But, I am kind of stuck here at the moment, when I’d really like to be exploring new places.

RM: What is your favorite thing to do that’s not

related to photography? GM: I don’t know why, but I really enjoy activities that have an element of hunting to them. Photography can often be about ‘the hunt’, but I also like foraging for food, exploring new places, seeking out new ideas, rummaging through trash in order to find treasure.. yeah I like hunting. I also love watching things grow, learning new skills and making things. I bake, I hand sew, I distill spirits, I brew beer, I read non-fiction, I paint and draw sometimes, I spend time in the garden, I decorate, I do a lot of people watching and I collect a lot of things.

RM: What are three things you couldn’t go a day

without? GM: There really isn’t anything I couldn’t go without for a day, besides water and air of course. I do like my coffee however, and hugs. And I really should be taking my medication everyday.

RM: What’s your favourite concept to portray? GM: I don’t have one. My photos, at the moment,

are more observations, than portrayed concepts… I think I’m heading in the direction of more conceptual photography though.

RM: How would you define photography? GM: I haven’t really sought to find my own

definition of photography. I am interested in other people’s definitions though.

RM: Why is photography important to you? How

does it draw you in? GM: I am very much a visual person, so I like to record and express things visually. I’ m still working out what photography means to me, why it is important, and exploring it as a medium. I have to say, I do like the instancy of it.

RM: If you could have any

superpower, what would it be and why? GM: What is the definition of a superpower? Does it mean a power that is supernatural? I am not so fussed with superpowers at the moment, there are plenty of earthly skills and talents I plan on achieving first.

RM: Who is your favourite

photographer? GM: I don’t have a favourite photographer, and I have never really studied any one photographer closely. I stumble arose photographers every now and then, that just take my breath away with their work. I suppose I most enjoy photographers that capture some sense of intimacy. I could list a few of my current favourites, but you probably wouldn’t be able to go out and find any information on them, they are mostly ‘unknown’.

RM: What is something that no one

knows about you? GM: I am probably a lot more ambitious then I let be known. I have some big dreams for myself that I am way to shy to share openly.

RM: Why do you create now? GM: I have always been a creative

person, and will continue to be so, I am sure. Photography is just one means of creating that I am exploring at the moment. I am really content right now, but also really scattered. I lack focus and drive, but taking photos to both record and to create, seems to be something I can keep up with at this stage in my life.

RM: Whats your favorite memory? GM: My favourite memory related to

taking photos? I don’t have one. My photo’s do capture a lot of my favourite moments though, and help me to remember them.

t r av e l i n g

After graduating from high school and losing someone I loved very much, I decided it was time to try something new and exciting. So I hopped on a plane, not knowing quite what to expect. Never had I been so alone, but never had I realized being alone could be such a beautiful thing. Through my travels, I saw the snow-topped mountains of Colorado, the smoky skies of New Mexico, the crowded streets of London, the daisy fields of Norfolk, and the sparkling Seine River in Paris. I met people on buses, planes, and trains who shared their awe-inspiring stories with me. I experienced poverty, privilege, and personality in everything I

came across. I never realized quite how breathtaking the world is until I had this chance to see it with my own eyes. In just one summer, I experienced a time of changes, a sweeping rush, and an adventure that took me across the world in just three weeks. I found a wanderlust that’s bursting at the seams and unending inspiration that permeates all of my thoughts. Between the sprawling mountain ranges and the pickpockets and the crowded Underground, I have discovered a passion for life I never knew existed. And I can proudly say that I did it all by myself.
