Coopers is a brewing family. It’s in our blood. For six generations we’ve been custodians of a proud legacy that began in 1862 when Thomas Cooper brewed his first batch of ale. Our passion for brewing has kept us together and helped us through economic recessions, wars, government imposts, changing tastes and the occasional hostile takeover bid. Today, our unique brand of naturally conditioned ales and stout are enjoyed around the world and we’re still making these beers using the same traditional brewing methods that Thomas did.
Coopers recently introduced a team of beer ambassadors to help share our story further and to inspire, engage and inform retailers and hoteliers about Coopers’ unique range of beers. The three beer ambassadors appointed so far have extensive experience and expertise in the industry and provide a unique resource for retailers.
We now look forward to the new year ahead as we leave on the heels of what was a positive year for Coopers Brewery. In 2015-16, Coopers was able to maintain strong growth, with beer sales rising 4.7 per cent to a record 78.8 million litres. Revenue for the year also increased to $235.1 million compared with the previous year figure of $231.3 million.
In June, Coopers reached an in-principle agreement with Brooklyn Brewing in New York to brew and distribute Brooklyn Lager in Australia and New Zealand.
Coopers increased its involvement with community events across the nation, including Good Food Month and the Night Noodle Markets. We also extended our involvement in the V8 Supercars to 2020 and released a limited edition Mild Ale 3.5% V8 can to coincide with the iconic Bathurst event.
The Ale n’ Spice campaign was a successful on-premise promotion based on pairing spicy foods with our Ale range and was followed by the release of our 2015 Coopers Extra Strong Vintage Ale at special events in Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide. We hit refresh on the packaging for Coopers Clear and new 330ml six-packs of Thatchers Gold cider were introduced towards the end of the year, while 20 litre kegs of Sapporo were re-introduced and new twelve pack options for Coopers ales were trialled.
The focus for 2016 will be to boost consumer awareness of Coopers’ unique, naturally conditioned ales and its international partner beers, whilst creating more occasions for new people to engage with beer in an enjoyable manner. Our ongoing engagement with targeted sponsorship and key marketing initiatives will be important factors in helping us to expand the entire beer category.
On the beer front, Coopers will brew and distribute the 2016 Extra Strong Vintage Ale mid-year and Carlsberg Mid Strength will roll out in February as part of the premium international beer portfolio. This gives Coopers and its distribution company Premium Beverages an additional product in the rapidly growing mid-strength sector of the market and further strengthens our portfolio of premium international beers.
Following the launch of refreshed packaging for Coopers Clear late last year, work to refresh the labelling of other Coopers lager beers will also be undertaken.
Coopers would like to wish everyone a prosperous 2016 and looks forward to continuing to work closely with the trade to meet the ever changing needs of our consumers.
