NARDYA ROUSSELOT BACK ON

THE GRID

message from ji Dear Readers, I feel compelled to get a little personal with you. I am positive all of you know about what is going on in Japan. The island country holds a special place in my heart because I was born there and lived there for a few years before my parents decided to move back to the States. I am not Japanese but Hawaiian, Chinese and Caucasian despite my ethnicity and nationality I still feel most at home when I am there even though I am here miles away from the country I love so much. A week ago, a huge 8.9 earthquake shook Japan causing buildings to crumble to the ground. Shortly after, a tsunami ravished through Sendai and parts of north eastern Japan pushing debris inland and leaving homes underwater. Many people have been affected by these devastating events including myself. I nearly cried when I heard it on the radio. All I could think about were my loved ones, wondering if they were okay or if I’d never see them again. I know many people have lost their homes, friends and loved ones. I am lucky enough to have not lost any friends dear

to me but my prayers go out to those who have. Even during these sad times, it does warm my heart to see so many people in Second Life rally together for one purpose — sending aid to Japan. Radar Magazine decided to host it’s own event immediately to raise money for the Red Cross. The Red Cross has always been an organization that helps those in need. We hope the money we donate will go to send food, supplies and help those of who have been displaced. We are encouraging all of you to help too. Whether you make a contribution in-world or directly to the Red Cross, you’re still helping and that’s all we could hope for. Consider helping out those in need because one day it may be you. ありがとうございます。 Arigatou gozaimasu

PHOENIX PROJECT BRI TO THIRD PARTY VIEW by lulu breuer Jessica Lyon first came to notice for many a few months ago when the Emerald Viewer started running into problems that eventual resulted in that viewer’s ability to log onto the Second Lift grid being disable. Jessica spearheaded the effort to address the Linden Lab conditions that Emerald failed to meet in a new viewer that was based on the Emerald project, and thus from the ashes of Emerald, the Phoenix viewer was born. In the months since these events, Jessica has raised her profile further by her key role as project Manager for both the Pheonix and the Firestorm viewer projects, and she is featured in the broadcast office hours as well as in several instinctual videos that can be found on the Phoenix and Firestorm wikis. Many may let such a prominent role go to their head, but you cannot find a more down to earth, approachable and humble person. That couple with her tireless work on the viewers and her willingness to help others make Jessica Lyon a person to know, here is our conversation: Lulu Breuer: Hi Jessica, thank you for agreeing to sit down with Radar Magazine for this interview. Jessica Lyons: It's my pleasure, thanks for the interest. LB: You have been in Second Life since 2006. What brought you to Second Life?

JL: Well, interesting story. A friend of mine told me about it and tried to explain what Second Life was. Of course I didn't get it and thought he was crazy. I downloaded the viewer, signed up for an account, logged in for about 10 minutes, and decided he was surely crazy. A few weeks later, I thought I would give it another try, met a mentor and here I am! LB: You, yourself were a mentor right? JL: Yes! In fact I was so impressed I became one. Shame Linden Lab shut that program down. It had its flaws, but managed better that program would have been a great asset for Linden Lab. In fact, I still say had they hired mentors and placed them at welcome areas full time to help newbies, there would have been no need for a Viewer 2. LB: Tell me about your background. Do you come to this from a technical education or have you picked all your expertise up since joining the game? JL: Well, I've always had an interest in computers, and have always been pretty good at figuring out programs and building computers etc. However, programming is not something that comes as natural to me, and to be blunt, I'm a horrible programmer. I can handle LSL [Linden Scripting Language] quite well, thanks to some dear friends who have helped me learn over the years. Viewer code is C++ language, which might as well be Greek to me, but I pick it up as I go. I usually learn by doing.

LB: How did the th movement start? JL: I was introduced from one of my best frie Chalice Yao. She had s own viewer just for her time, there really was o party viewers out there public except the griefe griefer groups in Secon cool to be able to do th no one else could do lik it was unheard of. Then Chalice stopped work o over to Emerald. I spen and learning viewer cod source and discovered Not well, but it got me i sibilities. Eventually I lan team as well. LB: What role do t play now in Second L JL: Third party view in Second Life in my op viewer for everyone, jus thing everyone does in party viewers provide u customization, choice. Second Life would be a

LB: What niche did JL: Well, Emerald w ular public third party v had a lot of features, fa

etc. I think at first it was really just power users who utilized it but before long even newbies were on it. It quickly became the most popular viewer out there. The target audience was aimed at power users. LB: It is what sold me on Second Life. JL: I think most everyone who ever used it would agree. LB: Without getting to much into detail, what lead to the end of the Emerald viewer? JL: In laymen terms ‌ just plain old irresponsibility. LB: When Emerald ended it was very disconcerting for the users; if forced to use the Linden Lab viewer many may have left Second Life all together. JL: That's why I started Phoenix. A lot of good hard honest work went into the Emerald viewer. A lot of people in Second Life became dependant on it and I felt it would be such a shame to see that go ‌ I learned a hell of a lot of lessons working on that team, and I put them all into practice on the Phoenix Project. LB: How is Phoenix different from Emerald? JL: Phoenix is a very structured project. We have many rules, guidelines, procedures that need to be followed by everyone on the team. We make sure Linden Lab has the real life identity of all of our developers before they are given access to commit to our repository. Phoenix is incorporated as a not for profit organization, which makes us more accountable in many ways. Many many steps have been taken to ensure nothing like what happened with emerald could ever

happen in this project. LB: What are you and your team planning? JL: Well as you know we've been working on our next generation viewer called Firestorm. Its primary goal is to get people over to the Viewer 2 code base and like it! But we have several other projects underway right now. Our hands are very full. LB: Anything you can share? JL: Still working on the Phoenix viewer, work on the Firestorm viewer, Translation project for our wiki, translation project for the firestorm UI, Phoenix-SPotOn3D viewer for the SpotOn3D grid, and the list goes on and on. Of course we're constantly trying to improve our support program. LB: When will Firestorm be officially released? JL: The question of the century! LB: Sure you get asked many times a day. JL: There are some criteria that needs to be met to our standards before it's ready for release. We were originally aiming for end of March for the official release. I still hope we can achieve that but reality is nothing goes to plan; so possibly April. The Phoenix Project hosts beginning and advanced classes for the Phoenix Viewer with classe for the Firestorm viewer coming soon. For more information about the Phoenix Project and updates visit: http:// www.phoenixviewer.com/. In addition, the project has biweekly televised office hours on Rezzed.tv, which can be viewed online at http://phoenix.rezzed.tv.

Just Nave ometimes real life intrudes on my Second Life. This past week I got to go hunting in house for a “SQUIRREL”. Wanna get your house wrecked? Let a squirrel start running around in there and knocking stuff over and crapping/peeing all over the place. Makes Second Life seem like a vacation by comparison. The analogy here is that squirrel reminds me of some people in Second Life who rampage around crapping and peeing on anyone and everything in their path with no regard for the consequences or repercussions of their actions.

S

I missed some BIG drama apparently between a designer/landlord who messed with some people’s heads and worse their money. I’m glad I wasn’t in Second Life for it because stories like this piss me off so much and my inclination is to get judgmental in a hurry and not to forgive people. EVER. I guess that’s the SCORPIO in me I take such care not to screw with people’s money although I admit that I take some pleasure in messing.with their heads. It seems to come back to the whole safety thing in Second Life. There are no real laws to enforce for anti-social behavior so people can get away

with being jerks and divas. But I believe it comes back to them eventually. I’ve had people ask me why they weren’t paid for a show and told them that since they didn’t like Tres Beau and told Kim they’d never shop at her store, but were cast for a Tres Beau show, why would I reward their attitude? People say things that leave a mark and when the favor is returned they get all wahhhhhhhhh, wah, wahhhhhhhhh. Screw that crap and screw squirrels too. I’m just, Nave “Be wery quiet we’re hunting squirrels” Fall

Radar Magazine will follow two new models on their journey to become a top model

What a crazy week! I Didn’t get much modeling done this week. I had the shoot for the Body by Eve feature. I also had a regular shoot for myself with Darion Brandeis. He is very talented as you can see in my pics this issue. Also you might want to check out his website, www. thedabcollective.com. His photos are a work of art. I love it. I wish I had just a dab of his talent. I have put in a few hours at Sage the past few days. I am trying to get there more. There is so much I need to do. I feel like when a shoot comes up I have nothing to wear. Of course I still haven’t organized my inventory yet. I will eventually get it done, I promise! I am queen of procrastination. I guess that is why I still haven’t entered in the JCNY model fest yet. Since it is a four day weekend--YAY for Mardi Gras--I just might get that done. Sometimes I hit something that would be equivalent to writers block; styling block maybe? I just don’t know what I want to wear or what look I want. Maybe I need more sleep but with RL and SL, where is the time for that? I love everything I do and don’t want to miss anything so I keep pushing on. There are some days that I just want to stay in pj’s and not go

anywhere but just veg out in front of the TV. I am looking forward to a show coming up the end of march. I will give details on that as soon as I find out. OH! I got a new job at Radar in marketing. The job in marketing is not as easy as it sounds (I wonder why some people don’t return IM’s or notecards). I’m hoping to get better at that. There are no better people to work with than the Radar staff. It is never a dull moment. I hope everyone comes out to the lounge and checks out our live acts. We had two live acts last week that were awesome, Nesto Silverfall and Gavin Zane. Look for the notices so you don’t miss the next show! I interviewed for a sorority, Gamma Epsilon Mu. I can’t wait to get started in that. ***update*** I was accepted so now waiting for others to interview so we can move forward. I am super excited!! Well lovely people, I must get off my rear and get some work done. I hope everyone has a fabulous weekend and week. Don’t forget to wear green on St Patty’s Day! You can find some fab apparel at the Radar Mall. <3 Fancy Bekkers

Hello all well another week in the modeling world has come and gone and I am still at it..so let’s get to what happened this week in my modeling world. The one thing I have learned is you can never have enough education in modeling, from what skin to wear to what accessories look the best; my biggest lesson comes from which poses to choose. The wrong pose can make the most beautiful dress look bad and vice versa. Poses are not just for standing; they are for walking the runway and looking good the entire time with the right posture for any outfit. So this week I went pose shopping and that in its self is another world. There are many places that have deals on poses but not all poses are good, or you find yourself finding a good pack but most of the poses are all wrong, or finding all the right poses but the price is so high you want to run away (lol). But of course no one said this business is easy. Be very careful when buying poses, pose huds; what might look the best can be the hardest to use and just makes you very frustrated..

always practice your poses, make combinations and write down the ones you think look the best so you can put them together, be creative and open to all possibilities. Well next week I start practice on a new runway show. I am hopefully prepared for this one. I have all my accessories together and in a folder, and I have prepared my bio and am ready to strut the runway so wish me luck. Along with that I am going to more castings; hopefully I can get over this fear of rejection (lol) but I am open to all contests and runway shows so hopefully we will see each other other there if so just give me a yell and I will do the same...UNTIL NEXT TIME

Real life comes to Sec Life with breedable ki by vikeejeah xevion Are you searching for the prrrrrrfect companion? How about a great way to earn a little “scratch”? If so, there is a little place designed just for you. From the grid renowned apparel designer Callie Cline and her team of talented creators, Equinox Pinion and Dennis Lagan, comes KittyCats. A feline paradise outfitted with all of the necessities that a cat and their companion could want or need. Many are not a fan of the idea of breedables. They are a great way to earn income in SL, the old myths that they are very script heavy and cause lag remain. It has been said that breedables are a money pit where you end up spending all of your linden dollars caring for and feeding your pets and their offspring. As a result of this, many have learned to steer clear of breedable anything. Lately there has been a new wave of smartly scripted, well textured breedables that seem to have a huge following, allowing the owner a

great potential for profit and enjoyment from these adorable pets. In the case of Callie Cline, her KittyCat Store is an affordable place for cat lovers to come and find starter cats, food, scratching posts, cat towers and much more. The store is tastefully crawling with cats. There is even an adorable kitty running aimlessly around the courtyard tree. A cute part is the food and drink store within a store called Feline’s. Here you can buy Kitty Kibble and Vita Milk for male, female and multiple cats. All Feline’s products are “organic” of course, and designed to give your cats good health and long happy lives (all nine of them). There are even catnip flavored gum balls (although who knows any cat who could eat a gum ball...). It is assumed they are for the owners or are simply toy balls mistaken for candy. If you plan to make this a business for yourself, chances are you will need to buy in bulk. Callie has you

covered with sim wide food and milk. One box of 10 or 20 will feed your breeder cats for one month or your pet cats for 2 months. Not bad for just 1600$L or 2980$L for food and 1350$L or 2600$L for milk. When you divide that by the weeks it’s a huge savings over individual container prices. If you have multiple cats to feed there are food and water dish platforms with adorable ceramic dishes for as many as 20 cats to eat at a time! For those who do not have the time to be on SL all day there is an auto feeder. This will allow you time to enjoy SL and RL without having to worry about the health of the cats. Not into breeding but want a beautiful kitty as a pet? No problem. KittyCat offers Perma-Pet. This supplement once fed to a breedable cat will turn this feline into a non breeding pet for good. There is no turning back so be absolutely certain you want to do this. Maybe you have a kitty which has had several litters and it’s time for

cond tties her to retire. This would be just what the doctor ordered. Keep your cats cozy in style with various beds and pet furniture. Callie’s line of designer pet beds is stylish, versatile and very affordable ranging in price from 50$L-175$L. There is something to suit every lifestyle and home setting. And for the ultimate in luxury, a cat home called Shaque d’ Amour is yours for just 300$L complete with its own bubble emitter. Let’s face it, cats love to chase bubbles. One criticism of this Cat Heaven is that it is missing toys. But then again this is SL and ...do these cats even play? Not sure but we may find out soon. them with different hairstyles, make ups and skins. Then I had to think about the actual photograph, the pose that would best show off the outfit, the background, the lighting. There's a lot of mental preparation for me before I even begin to take any photographs. Can you describe what inspires your style? Eve1209 Quintessa: A lot of what you see in Second Life is really over the top sexy, some would make me feel like I was half nude! I prefer a mix of classy and sexy. I want people to see me, not just exposed flesh. Fashion should enhance the person you are, it shouldn't be all you see. I like very simple, clean designs, pieces that aren't too flashy or trendy. Classics are always in fashion. I find that's true in my graphic design and photography as well. I don't like anything that looks too busy. What are your goals for modeling? Eve1209 Quintessa: I would like to continue modeling in Second Life, doing print ads and even branching out into live runway shows eventually. At some point I would like to get some formal education. Mostly though, I enjoy

utilizing my graphic design skills and combining it with my photography to make really beautiful fashion art or print advertisements. It really allows me to be creative. What do you see as the future of Second Life Fashion? Eve1209 Quintessa: I would love to see Second Life Fashion available in Real Life and vice versa. It would be amazing for designers to be able to use Second Life as a marketing/advertising tool for their new lines, and allow consumers to go right to their websites or stores and purchase the items they've seen or bought here. So many times I've thought about my clothes in Second Life, and wanted to have them available to me in Real Life! How would you describe your last year in Second Life? Eve1209 Quintessa: My last year has been a roller coaster. I have had some health issues that kept me away from Second Life for awhile. At times it's been depressing. But it's also been the most inspiring and creative year for me as well. I've been learning to build and I am hoping to open a store within the next few months with my wonderful partner and fiancĂŠ, Marcus. I'm also learning

how to make clothes. I have so many ideas that I've been anxious to work on. But none of this would even be possible without the support and encouragement of Marcus, who I met at the end of last year. He is the most amazing man, and so inspiring, giving me the confidence to believe in myself and my dreams. He's changed my Second Life in so many ways. What do you wish for this 2011 year? Eve1209 Quintessa: Most of all, I wish for good health, happiness and success for those I love, my family and friends. To finish, what advice do you have for young woman/ men who want to be a Model in Second Life? Eve1209 Quintessa: First of all, do your research. Sadly there are people out there who will try to take advantage of you, and take your money. Don't be afraid to ask for advice from those who are already established in the industry - ask for referrals! Ask who they would recommend for modeling schools, photographers, agencies, etc. I've found that most people are more than happy to help those who are just starting out.

sculpted prims with the release of her first pair of sculpted shoes — Kurvy Pumps and Kurvy T-Strap Mary Janes. That was the beginning of Nardcotix. Sculpted pumps, flirty Mary Janes and strappy Gladiator sandals are just some of the shoes a part of the Nardcotix repertoire with more additions to come. "I have a lot more shoes in mind, not just open toe shoes," Nardya said. "I might also make accessories such as belts and purses and the occasional clothing." But creating for the fastpaced world of Second Life can be demanding from designing gowns for Miss Virtual World to beautiful sculpted shoes. Designers rely on inspiration to get their creative juices going. "[Inspiration] depends on what mood I am, where I am or what I am watching or listening to," she said. " Usually I try to let ideas come when I am relaxed. Sometimes they hit me when I least expect it." Even with a few creative blocks, Nardya continued designing into 2010 until real life decided to step in forcing her

to take a break from Second Life to focus on moving and getting settled into her new home. Now she is back and ready to hit the ground running with all new designs in addition to her latest strappy heel shoe, Edith. With many great things in store for Nardcotix — with Nardya’s creativity and the announcement of mesh object into Second Life — the future of the brand can see no bounds. And she feels even with mesh coming in world it will not change how she creates. “I will make shoes the way I would normally make them,” Nardya said. “I can't wait for mesh. It is going to open a lot of doors, not just for making shoes but also for creating so many more things … I think it is going to revolutionize the way we create in Second Life and I am really looking forward to it.“ You can visit her mainstore at: http://slurl.com/secondlife/ Reek/206/91/662 or read her store blog at http://nardcotixsl. wordpress.com/
